Freshman Quest: Healing 101
Charlie felt it would be beneficial to show the newbies some basic medical techniques, hopefully to keep you alive a little longer! Deciding it would be better to actually show them in a (somewhat) more sanitary environment than the Dorms, so this quest takes place in the Health Department (their make-shift Infirmary). There are a few lingering staff and helpers around who show you the ropes.

Quest Notes:
- You can do this quest as a group if you'd like! Just roll the steps as usual.
- There is a 300 word minimum word count for each person in this quest.

Step One: Learning the Layout
- Roll 3d6 in one post OR 1d6 in three separate posts. RP your character inspecting these areas. (if you roll multiples you can either Re-roll or say they inspect that area super closely)
  • 1: Pull out a drawer and inside you find their supply of band-aids and bandages. It seems like a lot but in reality it would not last long if things really went down.
  • 2: A locked Cabinet filled with medicines. The staff tell you that only one person in their group holds the key to it, and he is quite the cranky customer. They say just in case something happens to the holder there is a hidden spare key somewhere.
  • 3: You look down at a metal table with shiny instruments piled on top. Really to you they look like mini torture devices, best not hang around for long. In reality they are emergency items for surgical needs.
  • 4: You instead the tables that the staff have covered in white linens. There are some mysterious stains on them, red tinted.
  • 5: Neat! There is a working height and weight scale the team had moved into the department. Good to know!
  • 6: A small room with a door off to one side. Inside is a simple desk and a few chairs, clearly a private area for meetings if you'd rather keep things hush hush. There is also paperwork on top of the desk. One of them is a log explaining what had been used and who had been there and when.

Step two: Using Supplies
- Not wanting to waste their limited medical supply on trainees, instead they improvise using similar objects to practice with.
- If doing this as a group feel free to 'practice' on each other, if doing this solo you may say you are using a random NPC to test things on!
- Roll 1d6 and match your responses below.
- Please roll twice! So do two of them below. (If you roll the same number feel free to re-roll)

  • 1: Fake Bandages! Using some clean socks, pretend to be bandaging up a part of your 'patients' body that might have been wounded. Use clips to clip the socks in place.
  • 2: Using a bottle filled with water from the tap, pretend you are cleaning a wound! Remember you would never actually use the trainted water on a real wound, but this is pretend. In a real situation you would use isopropyl alcohol or something like it.
  • 3: Taking a needle and thread, sew up a hole in the provided tattered clothing. Not only does this show how to make-shift sew a wound, it also patches some clothing holes! Yay for being useful!!
  • 4: On a table is an actual knife. They ask you to take the knife and cut up some of the canned peaches nearby. Why? They state it's another practice but i think they actually just need help with food prep.... Handling the knife comes with a warning of 'If you cut yourself you sew yourself up.'
  • 5: Another station leads towards the earlier metal table with the surgical equipment, there is a note on top that says 'DO NOT TOUCH.' Oh, Ok. Easiest example ever!
  • 6: As a lesson in maintaining a healthy environment, they make you clean down the entire room.

Rewards:
- This quest is considered complete once every player inside has rolled all the times and made the minimal 300 word count each!
- For Course Credits: Take the very first number and the very last number you rolled in this thread and add them together. If its an even number, divide it by two and thats how many points you get. If its an odd number, add +1 and then divide by two.
- Example: I rolled a 2 and a 4. 2+4 = 6. 6 / 2 = i earned 3 credits for this quest.
- Example 2: 1 rolled a 1 and a 2. 1+2=3. Oops! Odd number! So add a 1 to make it an even number. 3+1=4. 4 / 2 = I earned 2 credits for this quest.
- Max credits possible to earn in this quest is 6.
- The numbers you add are your personal numbers, meaning YOU rolled them. If you have multiple people in a thread, they use their own first and last numbers they personally rolled.

Morris was not a doctor. In fact, he had regularly used alka-seltzer, Icy hot, and Aspirin for years and went to his doctors for minor aches and pains. He hadn't been to the Health Center because he had his own family doctor back in his neighborhood, and had come to associate the place before the epidemic for questionable rashes and the flu.

Now it was used for more serious injuries than just STDs (which is probably still looked at - students were students.) He stood in the Infirmary and looked around, checking the place out as they worked to find a place for him to train, and they did encourage him to familiarize himself with the area and look around (but not getting in the way).

He stood, looking around, before he bumped into a table that jingled. It was laid with metal instruments, all pristine and bright, and all very sharp. It was strange to see something so surgical in a school health center.

Looking around, he moved out of the way of a gurney, holding his broken arm, and turned to look at a metal cabinet. Curious, he tried opening it, and saw it was closed. A blonde student called out. "It's locked. Guy with teh key isn't around." And then walked off down the hallway.

Standing, he glanced at a cabinet beside him and opened it, seeing it filled with white bandages. It was a lot, more than he expected a month into their situation, but he knew with all the shooting that had happened, it would probably be all gone soon.

It wasn't long before Austin appeared next to Morris, poking his way awkwardly through the same tasks -- maybe trying to ride the older man's coattails, all things considered. He wasn't much of a doctor either, and didn't even really have much knowledge of simple first aid, so he had to take his cues from somewhere.

Morris checked the locked cabinet and so, a moment, later, Austin did the same. It was locked, but surely with a little elbow grease he could -- another student passed through before he could give it a good effort, before he could struggle to get the damned thing open. Probably for the best.

Morris checked a drawer filled with bandages, and a moment later, Austin poked his nose in to check it out, stealing out a handful of supplies and shoving them into his pockets for safe storage, just in case he needed a little something later. Except, of course, that he mostly just got bandaids.

Finally, he peered around the corner, still quiet and thoughtful, and blinked a little bit at the empty office. A quick glance around the place assured he wasn't about to get into too much trouble for snooping, so he snuck in to dig through the paperwork on the desk, and then sigh in faint frustration. Not altogether useful. And he couldn't even bribe anyone with it.

He re-emerged, frowning.

When Austin came back, Morris was talking to a woman in her late twenties, probably a super senior if they were still a working college, and she handed him a bottle of murky water. He was familiar with the color as it was what came from their still working taps, and he swirled it slowly as she looked over to Austin. "Try working it on him. You can be partners. I'll check back in a second."

Mr. Hubertson held the bottle in his only good hand, and looked over at Austin. "I have a doctorate. I'm not a doctor." He stared at Austin. "I also signed a paper against contact with students.......Miss.....Misss........." She was gone and he stared at the bottle.

Austin blinked at Morris once, warily, eyed the bottle in his hand -- and then, with a soft sigh, rolled up his sleeve [the right one, not the left one] to offer the doctor an arm. It was dirty, because they all were dirty, got that way quick, so it could serve as a perfectly fine example. He didn't say anything, just raised his eyebrows in a pointed way and cocked his head, waiting for the man to do his work.

While he did, a station lead pointed toward a metal table, pointing meaningfully at a sign for Austin to read: 'DO NOT TOUCH.' And thus his lesson was learned as well, though perhaps not terribly well. It made his lips pull back in a tight-faced grin as he looked back to Morris.

Morris moved over and lightly touched his arm, his fingertips clammy as he poured the water and left a clean spot among the general dusting they all had everyday before they hit the showers. Once clean, an attendant gave him some pieces of cotton that, as he paused and looked down, noticed it was clearly a torn up sock.

"Pretend it's a bandage." The student said with a eye roll before handing him some metal clips and walking off to the side to clean. Being just as careful and barely touching Austin, he wrapped the "bandage" around his arm and clipped it. It was very loose and left too much room.

A low "hmmmm" came from the professor as he looked at his work.

"Hmmmm," Austin echoed, maybe just faintly amused: his eyebrows raised as he took in Morris. He tested the bandaged arm, flexing carefully -- and the whole thing fell off, to pool around his elbow in a loose bunch. It probably wasn't the best job, and probably wasn't the practice Morris needed either -- so he raised his eyebrows as he sat, knife and peaches in hand, to do his own task. Carefully slicing them into a bowl.

It was an offer of sorts. Morris could always try again.
