Normally Joy Ann would be humming while she worked, but normally she didn't have a broken jaw. After today's escapades out in the wild, wild world, she had had her fill of trying to figure out what was going on and was ready to be back at the prison trying to figure out an easier problem: what to help Autumn cook for the next meal.
This was going to be a bit of a challenge, since Autumn had been blinded in the mess, and Joy Ann herself couldn't really talk and didn't want to think about opening her mouth to taste things... But luckily they had Shaun. Good old Shaun. Who would have thought a teenager would have been as handy as he was?
Too tired to particularly care about what she was cooking (which was really, really, really tired), she silently stumbled over to the pantry and grabbed the four closest ingredients she could find. Weird food was better than no food, wasn't it?

There was always room in the scavenging and hunting and searching and hanging out for a break in the prison kitchens, doing something useful. Shaun had been surprised to see Joy Ann out there, and to see that she had ended up with such a harsh injury. He felt sorry for her – he'd come off lucky. If he hadn't been able to talk, or move, he would have died of misery. But a black eye... that he could handle.
“Hey,” he said, grabbing some additional ingredients as he made himself helpful, “You don't mind if I talk, do you? I don't like the quiet, you know?” he said, picking up some pepper, beans, pasta, and MYSTERY LIQUID that he hoped was soy sauce but was probably edible anyway.

The former teacher absentmindedly grabbed some questionable meat, dried pasta, a bottle of unidentified black liquid, and a large thing of SUGAR. In her defense, she was so distraught that she mistook the SUGAR for salt, and it was an honest mistake. For the black liquid, well, it had to be some kind of sauce, didn't it?
"Naa," she replied to Shaun, knowing the effort to vocalize would cause less pain than shaking her head no. "Lease do. Ihll lissen." His chatter was welcome, actually, as long as he didn't talk about things that she wasn't thinking about on purpose. Hopefully he wouldn't be too jokey either. She knew laughing would definitely hurt. ...she really ought to get to the Medbay after this for some painkillers at least.
She dumped all her ingredients in a pot and brought the whole thing to a low boil before popping a lid on the thing and lowering the heat to a simmer. Eyeing his choices of ingredients, Joy Ann figured that everyone liked pasta, and everyone certainly needed a food they liked tonight. He must be thinking along the same lines. Now if only it ended up tasting okay. Maybe she should be watching her pot more closely instead of paying attention to Shaun...

Shaun added the pasta to her mix, figuring it would do best in there. Cook all the pasta together, right? Everything was better with more pasta! In the meantime, he set up a bowl of beans, pepper, and ??? liquid. He figured it would work out okay.
He began to heat it, stirring every so often. “So you know what I want to do” when we get out of this “I want to join the circus. Yeah. The circus or... you know one of those dance troupes with the flips and the costumes? One of those. I'd be great at it!”
He added some more pepper and stirred again, “It'd be respectable for a change, probably be the best thing I've ever done in my life, and... yeah.” He took a sniff of her cooking, grinning. “Smells great!” She wasn't watching the pot, but he was. Thats why there were two of them in the kitchen... shame that Autumn had gotten 'flashed' too, but she deserved a break after that cake she'd made... mmm-mmm good.
“Anyway, I didn't come from much, you know? Drunk ma, no pa, and my school was shitty too...” he turned to her for a moment. “Say, I heard a rumor around that you were a teacher, right?”

Joy Ann listened carefully, studying the youth for all he wasn't saying as well as what he was actually saying. She tilted her head slowly to one side in question for the comments about the circus, and then waved a hand in a loose approximation of someone running and flipping. He did flips? That was pretty cool. She couldn't quite imagine him in a sparkly costume though. That seemed a little out of place, since he was generally so washed-out in coloring.
Apparently she was listening pretty well (just not to her pot), since he decided to go on about not being respectable. Joy Ann had noticed that he still wore the handcuff bracelet, but... Well, Shaun just seemed so harmless that there really wasn't any doubt of his respectability. And hey, her pot did smell alright. "Ruy it?" she asked, fetching a wooden spoon before offering him a taste of her concoction. Hopefully it wasn't poisonous.. She didn't want to lose Shaun due to lackadaisical cooking.
It sounded like society had really failed to step in and pick up the pieces where Shaun's family had failed. Joy Ann couldn't hold back the wave of guilt and pity that washed over her, though she knew that she had done her best to do her small part for other kids that-- No, not thinking about the kids. Though Shaun was asking, sorta...
She nodded slowly, half from the pain and half because she felt like this conversation may be going to places she wasn't interested in. Just then, her handheld radio squawked, which reminded her that she still had her pencil and paper with her as well. Turning away from her food, she turned the radio down (seemed like a bunch of people were just interested in insulting each other at the moment), and fetched the writing supplies. 'Kindergarten teacher,' she wrote in her typical school-use bubbly letters. 'Sorry about you ended up here.' Seriously, he seemed to nice to be here and too nice to be subjected to her tired cooking.

She wanted him to try it? Well, he didn't mind if he did. Shaun tasted the... pasta... thing... that Joy Ann had made. He swirled the taste around in his mouth, thoughtfully, before swallowing. “Hey! Not bad!” he said, “Needs to cook a little longer, it's a little bit hard I think, but otherwise... pretty good. I'd offer you mine to taste but, I think it...” he stirred it and blinked, “Oh, maybe not more time, but I don't want you to open your poor mouth unless you've gotta.” he shook his head. Who would ever want to break this sweet lady's jaw? Hooligans, that was who. He tried his own bean... thing... “Oh hey, this is good too!” he grinned, “We make a great team in the kitchen don't we? Yeah!”
He tended the pots as she scurried away briefly, watching with interest as she brought her writing things and wrote. He ooked down at the paper – damn, that was a good idea. “Ooo, a kindergarten teacher?! Wow!” he gave her an appraising look, “Well, okay, I'm not surprised. You're kind of a saint...” He beamed, replacing the lids of his pot. “Gonna keep that just a little longer... Anyway, I wish you'd been my kindergarten teacher. Who knows? Maybe I'd never have ended up here at all.” He read the second part. “But that's the thing about stealing and cheating and going into and out of places you aren't supposed to go for a living – you get caught eventually, right?”

Whaaaaat, it tasted good? Joy Ann's eyes widened in surprised as she actually sat up and finally paid attention to her food. Sniffing at the pot, she decided that huh, perhaps it did smell okay, and therefore the taste was also probably okay. And Shaun wasn't poisoned, so there was that too. Excellent! And Shaun's was good too (she'd take his word for it.) Looked like Autumn could actually trust them!
Joy Ann left the stove on low so the food would stay warm and then held up a hand for a high-five, perhaps a little more pleased with their success than she should have been. If she had really wanted to succeed, she probably should have paid more attention to what she was cooking.
Smiling at his kind words, and then wincing in pain because smiling was really not someone one could do with a broken jaw, Joy Ann thought carefully about what the younger man was stating. He was a thief? A thief that loved acrobatics? 'But that's useful now,' she scrawled on her paper. 'More useful than being a kindergarten teacher.' Hell, she hadn't seen any kids whatsoever anywhere since this whole thing had started. ...not that that was a bad thing, with all the casualties around. She really wouldn't have been able to handle that.

Shaun was only too happy to hi-five her. “Yeah, we made a badass meal, go us!” he said, grinning, “They'll eat this stuff and they won't know what hit them!” Like with the honey-cakes! Not that the food couldn't be better, but still! It was a pretty good job on their part. “And I bet we'll do even better when Autumn's okay.” he commented. They said that many cooks spoil the broth, or something, but with Autumn's expertise, and his and Joy Ann's sweet skills, they would kick some culinary a** with their batch of nourishing supplies.
“Well, I don't know.” he said, turning his on low heat, “It's handy, but I kind of wish I'd learned, like, ninja skills or something.” he shrugged. “So its really just flips and climbing.” It was more than that, really – it was an art. But against scary thorn shadow monsters... “Whats been better for me, actually” he admitted, “Is talking to people. That's pretty important.” He smiled at the pots and wiped his forehead. “Whew!” he said, “That was a good days work!” He was pretty proud of what they had made, “We deserve a break, eh? Lets go clean up and then we should probably check on Autumn and make her jealous that she couldn't be a part of this awesome meal...”

Joy Ann nodded slowly, wishing she had ninja skills as well. That would certainly be useful. And finding Autumn seemed like it would be a good idea, since she could probably use some food after all that had happened to her today. Joy Ann really hoped that Autumn's blindness wasn't going to be a lasting thing.
Filing all that Shaun had told her away for later, Joy Ann reached out to pat him twice on his shoulder and picked up her things. Yes, finding Autumn now would be a good idea. That or perhaps some cardio. If today proved anything, it was that she was going to have to be a little bit faster tomorrow.
