Freshman Quest: Apprentice Guard Duty

After certain events happening (right under their noses!) it was decided there were not enough guards to keep their eyes on everything. The goal of this quest is to start training for guard duty earlier than they have prior to now. All freshman will be assigned to a higher ranking member to show them the ropes.

Quest Notes:
-This is a RP format Quest! No dice, just RP.
- Choose one (or more than one if you'd like!) Scenario below and RP it out.
- The higher ranking officers mentioned are random NPC's, just pretend it is some random member of the group mentoring your character(s).
- You can do this Solo or in a group! Just pretend each of you is assigned a NPC mentor.
- Make sure to make a note somewhere in your post(s) about wearing your Jersey! You are leaving the dorms so the Jersey is required.

Scenarios:

1: You and your mentor spot one of the infected getting a little too close to the dorms. Quietly look around for something (you're choice) to throw as far away from the university as possible - The noise will hopefully attract the infected away! Does it work?

2: Investigate a strange noise you hear. It turns out to be nothing (perhaps just a mouse or maybe a fellow team member playing a prank?) RP out what you find!

3: You discover part of the University where the lights have gone out mysteriously. Making a mental note to tell the leaders, you decide to check it out as well. What do you find? (most likely a false alarm! Just a fizz'd wire~ )

4: On the rooftops of the dorms you peek over the edges to the open grounds below- What do you see? Infected? Burning Objects? Other people? Nothing? Remember to stay quiet if its an infected or other people! No need to give away our position.

5: WILDCARD: You decide what happens! But remember, no battles!

Requirements:
- Being as this is RP format, 800 words is required to consider this quest complete!
- If a single person is doing this, write either a one post solo or a multi post solo-thread if desired!
- If in a group, 800 words is still required per person total.

Rewards:
- Upon completing this quest each person will receive +4 Credits! (If in a group EVERYONE needs to meet the 800 word requirement before you can claim credits!)
- If you complete more than one of the Scenarios, add +1 Credit (Max of 5 credits total for this quest.)

Austin was still wearing the leather jacket Harvard had found in the office, comfortably settled around his shoulders, an annoyingly good fit -- and a strange contrast to the #33 jersey underneath. He was settled near the edge of the roof with an unfamiliar face who seemed, already, completely sick of his bullshit. The look on the older man's face was flat and distant, his responses mostly limited to nodding, or shaking his head, or puffing out a sigh.

He wasn't charmed, and he wasn't impressed, but it didn't stop Austin from trying, lounging and not chattering, but spinning some story from freshman year --

he'd pause when he saw Harvard approaching with his own mentor, an eyebrow raised as he took in the professor in his own jersey.

Harvard's mentor, on the other hand, had been positively animated the entire time they'd been walking. The fresh-faced kid hadn't been talking about anything useful, but petty dramas and who was ******** who and who hated who. It was horribly annoying, but Harvard tried to listen anyway, to assimilate the information. It was difficult. Clearly his 'mentor' (and Harvard used the term lightly) was only speaking to hear the sound of his own voice. Harvard rubbed his beard absently - was the kid's name Clif? Grif? Calvin? s**t.

"Do you think - if there were infected around - tat they would be attracted to the sound of your voice? We could be dead." Then he caught sight of a familiar jacket. It just so happened to sit on familiar shoulders, too. Ah, a change of pace. Ignoring his guide (Harvard assumed - correctly - that Clifford the big red dog would follow), he sat down on the edge of the roof.

"Find anything fascinating, number thirty-three?"

"It doesn't suit you, fifteen." Austin's eyes raked over Harvard in an amused kind of way, clucking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. He crossed his legs, leaning back against the edge of the roof, and tipping his head back appraisingly.

"You need something with leather elbow patches and a pinned collar." This was somewhere between mocking and teasing -- or maybe, out of Austin, they were the same thing. He shrugged and thrust a thumb to his mentor. "We're going to go out wandering, apparently."

"Mmm, a little too jock, yes. I could say the same about you, you know." The jersey and leather jacket combo was a bit odd - required, but odd. They'd make fine targets for other factions. "Pinned collars are only good if they are getting mussed later," he said, nonplussed. He paused and shot a look first to Austin's mentor, and then his.

"Maybe we should all go together and make a larger target?" His voice was wry.

"Or maybe we should split up and all get attacked individually and torn to shreds, then stand around asking 'hey, did anyone see where Harvard went?'" Austin raised an eyebrow as he said it, sarcastic and challenging -- and it made his mentor roll his eyes, gesturing for them to follow. This was guard duty: meant to be a patrol. Silence wasn't all that important, but movement was, as were sharp eyes.

Austin trailed him, hands in his pockets, and lacked the last, with the slightly-off prescription and his face squinted up. But maybe someone else would catch sight of movement not too far off.

"Implying I would go first - rude, Austin," he said, his voice full of mock affront. "I have certain skills." He fell into step right behind Austin, eyes scanning out the window. Suddenly, his mentor shushed him, tapped him on the shoulder and pointed. An infected - or something shambling weirdly - was nearing the dorms. Harvard tugged on Austin's jacket as his mentor spoke.

"Find something - to throw. We gotsa get the thing away from us, 'kay?" Can we throw you- it was on the tip of his tongue, but Clifford the big red mentor had done nothing besides be irritating. Instead, Harvard glanced around and located a large glass bottle (only partly broken) Wordlessly, he handed it to Clifford, who lobbed it far away.

There was a pause -- and then Austin got low, careful, so that he could watch the reaction from the creature as the glass arced slowly through the air, landing with a solid crash decently fair from their location. The infected's head came up, dead eyes scanning the area frantically before settling in the direction of the sound, taking off through the rubble at an alarmingly fast pace. It made Austin grimace and shudder, just a little, slowly straightening as it became clear that they were in the clear again.

"God, they're so ******** gross." His mentor looked unamused by the language, but made a distantly agreeing sound all the same. Maybe he wouldn't say <******** gross, but he definitely didn't think they were charming, or cute, or anything else.

A sharp gesture from the man, this time telling them to keep low as they moved on along their route.

"******** gross is pretty apt. And just think, one day we could be that too," he said, exhaling through his nose in disgust. Harvard did not relish the idea of his body shambling about willy-nilly without his say so. They moved so fast, too - he didn't want to be on the receiving end of their attentions.

Suddenly, a noise caught his ear - like something being knocked over. Or footsteps. It could be anything, really. The vagueness of it all was probably because Harvard did not actually hear it, but Clifford did.

"Let's go check that out."

"Cool." Marching off into certain death zones or whatever. At least he could still kick, and pretty effectively, if earlier was any indication. All those late nights up against walls and whatnot.

"You. Check it out." the mentor put a hand in the small of Austin's back to propel him in that direction -- which was a good thing, because he certainly wasn't about to volunteer to go off on his own. One stumbling step and then he caught his balance, shooting an annoyed look back over his shoulder as he dropped low again to creep his way across toward the source of the sound. At least his mentor followed close behind, and maybe Harvard and his keeper behind that.

It meant that they could be witness when the cat jumped out of a barrel and went careening past them. And they'd be party to the not at all masculine half-smothered squeak of sound that Austin made as it went by, quick cut off. It made his eyes sharpen again, too, suddenly furious, giving Harvard a look. If he said something, there'd likely be repercussions.

As if Harvard would pass up such an opportunity. He clapped once, then twice. The pain from his arm was unpleasant, but worth it. "Austin, ten out of ten points for your small woodland creature impression." He closed the distance between them and reached out to place his hand on Austin's shoulder. Leaning close, he spoke in a loud whisper. "Or was it meant to be something else?"

The touch got a second surprised sound -- unexpected, and Harvard was very close, and for just a moment Austin was twenty years old and jittery, not a cocky pain in the a**. He cleared his throat, embarrassed maybe, and dug for anger instead. It surfaced in the form of a single raised finger, thrust in Harvard's face without going anywhere, and was punctured by a moment of excitement.

One of the lights down the hall blew. There was a shower of sparks in the distance, and that section of the corridor went dark. In response, Austin twitched, one step back into the professor's chest.

The way Austin made another small sound, the way he didn't jerk back - well, it was interesting. Austin was interesting in a different way than Caroline. She was all feline calculation, waiting to pounce. He was, well, Harvard hadn't figured him out yet, but it made him want to crack him open, in a way. The middle finger was expected, and the corner of his mouth twitched.

But the step back, that was equally surprising, and Harvard fought hard to keep from flinching suddenly. Instead, his hand curled around Austin's arm, fingers sliding: deliberate, slow. Harvard crowded in a little more closely, because it was an opportunity, and he wanted to see the reaction. He considered his options carefully. When he spoke, it was near Austin's ear, and softly.

"Are you alright, Austin?"

He half-turned, blinking at Harvard -- and slowly, very slowly, he worked to pull himself back together, an eyebrow raised in cocky self-certainty and his eyes raking over Harvard in a pointedly assessing way. He still didn't pull back, but now it was equally flirtatious, challenging, any embarrassment driven away through sheer force of will.

It was a neat trick, honestly, because if he wasn't embarrassed, it was easy to make it seem like he had nothing to be embarrassed about. Maybe people would even forget he'd made that first panicked sound.

"I think it's a sign. That we should go back." He said it matter of factly, with a raised eyebrow at his mentor as he finally stepped out of Harvard's grasp and shoved hair back out of his face. And his mentor, at least, didn't object. They had, after all, stopped one of the infected.
