It sounded a little bit like a ghost's moaning as it echoed across the halls of the fourth floor. Mel was raiding one of the rooms again, mostly claiming she was cleaning but it'd been an hour and very little cleaning had gotten done at all. She'd started, though, and there was a small pile of old magazines in the corner to indicate as much. What stopped her in her tracks, though, was an empty box.
Not just any empty box. One of those empty boxes. The sort previously filled with delicious little donut-y morsels...
"Whyyyyy..." the girl whined again, then simply started swaying about in the kitchen where the box sat on the counter, tipped over, opened and emptied of its magnanimous contents of sweet, chocolate-covered (or at least hers would have been) donut bits.

Brie was making her way up to the roof when she paused to listen to what sounded like someone in distress of some form or other. At first, one might think there was a serious problem with how pained the voice was, as it echoed down the hall.
Maybe it was best to just keep going, mind her own business? But if there really was a problem.. it wouldn't hurt to just check what was so upsetting.
Following the sound of the voice, which led her to one of the rooms on the fourth floor, the girl hesitantly poked her head in, only to find another girl mourning over what appeared to be an empty doughnut box. Brow furrowed in confusion, it was hard to tell if other woman was just upset to be cleaning such a pigsty of a room, or if it was really just the box itself.
"Uhh.." She started, unsure of how to respond to what she witnessed. "Is everything okay in here..?"

It didn't register at first, when someone spoke up from behind her where the door to the apartment was. But when they spoke again Mel started and turned around, still nearly teary eyed and a little confused that someone would come walking into the same random room that she had. Of course, she also didn't realize that she'd been making so much noise.
She squinted with her tear-blurred eyes and, when she realized it was Brie, she picked up the box and presented it to her like it was a beloved pet that had died in her arms.
"Look what I found," she started softly and with a frown. "It's like a box of memories, Brie! Look at it!" She shook the box with emphasis, not really meaning to freak the other girl out but clearly she was upset about coming across such a box. Inside rattled the smallest crumbs of moldy donut.

Words could not describe what was happening before her, and nothing prepared her on how to react when someone was weeping over a cardboard box. It didn't help matters when Mel began to shake the box, as if to make her understand.
"Uhh.." Brie being as antisocial as she was, gave her no life training on how to handle this situation. Instead, she just blurted out the first thought that came to mind. "I'm sure you can find more doughnuts at one of the abandoned Tim Hortons stores down the street."
Only after she said this, she realized how ridiculous it sounded. It had been over a month since things had gone to hell. Would there be anything at all really..? Some ingredients, maybe..? Packed coffee, probably. But doughnuts..? That might actually be stretching it.

Her words, while comforting, still brought on a few more crocodile tears before Mel finally managed to get it together. At least enough to where she wasn't crying anymore and she'd wiped her face dry with her hankie--yes, she had a hankie--and the only traces of her little outburst were her puffy eyes and the box in her other hand.
"It was probably one of the earlier chains to get ransacked," she said before a sniffle, "so I doubt that, but thank you for trying to make me feel better."
The girl sighed and leaned against the counter, eyes trained on the box in her hands. "I just saw it and remembered that my dad loves these things, so..." She paused to lift her eyes to meet the other's, smiling softly. She always made sure to still use present-tense when she referred to her family, lest more tears started pouring out from her eyes again. And quite possibly scare away whoever she was with at the time.
Mel lowered the box and simply held it to her side; she could probably remake it into some kind of container, maybe a makeshift bowl for one of Juliette's cats or something. "Anyway, um. Sorry for blubbering like an idiot. I feel like I should thank you for not just running off."

A little relieved to find that Mel wouldn't be running off to check out the doughnut shop, Brie entered the room, carefully walking around any objects inside the room.
Ah.. so it wasn't so much the doughnuts that were making her teary eyed, but rather it triggering memories of loved ones lost. With that in mind, her expression softened a little more as she moved stand beside the other girl, patting her lightly on the back. This was how they did it right? To comfort others? Was it even helping.
"I'm sorry for you loss.." Everyone had lost someone, but some were closer than others. Brie had no contact with her family long before the apocalypse began, so the the possible loss of her family didn't hit her as hard as it did others.
Shaking her head at the girl's apology, Brie offered a small smile. "No need to apologize. Everyone has their moments where they just need to let it all out."

She welcomed the attempt at comfort; it did help a little, and she offered Brie a small smile as thanks for it.
"I like to think they're still alive somewhere, but..." she let the thought trail as she took a deep breath to sort of gather herself and her thoughts. She'd been doing well not dwelling on the idea of her family being lost to her at this point, no sense in losing it now. but Brie was right, everyone did have their moments. This was just one of hers, and there was nothing wrong with it.
She turned to the other girl with a slightly bigger smile. "What about you? Any chance you've heard from your family?"
