Shaun held the paintball rifle gingerly, uneasily, as if it might bite him at any second. If he wanted respect in this prison, he would have to earn it, and his usual skills of climbing, observation, and charm would simply not do. He looked unhappily at the rifle, at the people manning the paintball station, and at the targets lurking behind their hidey holes. “All right,” he said, “I'm ready.” he swallowed nervously and took aim. Which of those targets would pop out first? Would they be human... or not?

He flinched as the first one came out, nearly closing his eyes and very much not pulling the trigger. He was shaking already – he did not like guns. Sure, he had been around them his whole life, but the whole point was always – especially for him – to never have to use them. He'd hated when things went wrong. He'd always run. Getting in and getting out was his game. Not shooting.

But he needed to do this.

He forced himself to take aim again, only to see that the first target was a 'human' one. Thank god. he exclaimed, gritting his teeth.

The next one popped up, leering at him with bloodstained fury, and he shot it, right in the chest. The next one was much the same, and he started to feel a little better about this. So far, so good – he was only hitting the right things, the paintball splatter making a nice contrast against their gorey appearance.

They started to come up faster now – his shot went wide on the next one, narrowly missing a 'civilian'. He didn't have time to reflect on the fate of the next two, which popped up almost simultaneously – one gained a new splotch on their head. The other remained clean.

Shaun took his aching finger off the trigger and looked up at the people running the gallery with surprise. “Hey, I did pretty well!”

“Sure did. Great job, kid.” they said, taking the rifle from him, “You might actually be more than dead weight, eh?”

Shaun laughed. “Not the best choice of words.”

“Heh. Yeah. You know what I mean.”

“I do!” he said, stretching, “Thanks!”
