Description: Malls are big, and there's more than enough room for every Mall Rat to make their home there, and your home can always use improvements! Collect some supplies, find a safe space to sleep through the night, and, well. Make yourself at home away from home.
Goals:
Step 1: MAKE IT HABITABLE.
You as a survivor need to find something that will work as a bed, something to store your personal items in, and a way to get some privacy for changing. (No washrooms, because no store in the mall has enough space to dedicate an employee-only bathroom). That and people keep taking your furniture to help reinforce the barricades... Looks like it's time to replace everything again.
Roll 1d10. If even, you succeed. If odd, don't worry! Just roll again till you get even. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 2: MAKE IT DEFENSIBLE.
Use any loose items you can find to protect the front of the store you've set up in. While most of the mall is safe, there are some shops that aren't, and you've got to prepare for the worst.
Roll 2d4 until they match. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT DEFENDABLE.
With another survivor-- played by a player or one you NPC-- check the strength of your defenses.
Both roll 1d10. The higher roll determines the outcome. If you are NPCing, the first roll is yours, the second roll is the NPC's. If the barricades stay up, you get 1 bonus Arcade Token for completing the quest.
Otherwise repeat Step 2 until your dice matches, then try Step 3 again to make sure it can withstand the "assault."
If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT LIVABLE.
There is an IKEA in the mall, and that means you get to raid it for furniture! ...Easier said than done, though.
Find the kind of furniture you want! Feel free to just RP it out and pick what you want! Escape the labyrinth: Roll 2d6 till they match. Find the boxed version you need to put together: Roll 1d20 till you get an even number. Put the furniture together: Roll 1d20 till a 15 or higher.
If you have to roll more than 5 times, consider it done! Congratulations!
First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.
Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.
Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! You need to meet this word count while doing the quest, so no going back to pad your quest to claim tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.
500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens. 600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens. 700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens. 800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.
Whistle While You Work: You can absolutely work on living quarters with someone else, even if you don't intend to stay with them. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but it does mean you get good company!
Choosing her place to stay wasn't hard. She's been here since Day Zero and the only other person with a key to the back room was Guy, who didn't have any reason to come in. Megan was staying in the EB Games.
What she didn't like, however, was the total lack of space in the back. Clearly, it was time to expand and fortify. She managed to scavenge some cardboard boxes out of a nearby store to craft a makeshift privacy screen, which she stapled to the floor after cutting some slits in so she could see out. Advantages of being small: her spy slits were too low for taller people to use comfortably!

Of course, with a smashed-in storefront, she couldn't expect to expand her space safely. She needed something to bar the entry, and she had just the thing: the wide shelves that hadn't yet been taken for the barricades. It would have to do, though it was huge and hard to move. She'd have to manage.
But the thing was too heavy. She was going to need assistance.

She peeked into the hallway just in time to see someone who had come out to investigate all the noise she was making. "You! Give me a hand with this, will you? Gotta keep zombies out of here."
With help recruited, a second attempt was made. Good thing the shelf was empty. The two of them hauled the unit out to the front of the store and set it down horizontally across the bottleneck at the counter. It would take some climbing for anyone to get over that. For good measure they wedged some broken chair legs into the frame, pointing outward. It looked a little like an orc fortification or something.

With the shelf in place, they needed to be sure it would hold. It was heavy, sure, and spiky too, and it was on a high friction carpet to boot. Unfortunately, that carpet was also littered with broken glass shards that made rendered the high friction part kind of moot.
The two of them grabbed the safe side and gave it a good rattle. Would it hold?
Nope. It just slid backwards on the glass. Better find another way to hold it in place.

She dug around the nearby stores, hoping to find a broom. Maybe it'll be sturdier if she just got some of the glass out of there... Plus then she'd have some broken glass. She could dump it over a barricade or something, or if she could find some glue, maybe caltrops?
Sadly, her search yielded nothing. Now what? She wasn't about to abandon her fort.

How about wedging it in place? She and her buddy went off in search of some wood. Maybe there would be something they could break into chunks to just kind of cram it into place.
Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of big, chunky wood to be found nearby. They did find some more rickety chairs, though, and smashed them to pieces.

The smashed wood was jammed into the frame again, the legs pointed downward at the back. Maybe it would help anchor it by stabbing it into the carpet?

Improvements in place, the two of them gave the shelf another good shake. Would it stay put this time? Maybe the shaking might have moved some of the glass out of the way so it could stay put by its own weight?
The splintered wood dug into the carpet and their spiky invention wouldn't budge. Perfect!

Well, now she had a bigger space and a defensive mini-barricade. That wasn't so bad! Now to make the place a little more livable. IKEA seemed like a great place to start looking for something nicer. It took some convincing, but her helper agreed to come along for the trek, too. They could get lost in the maze together! Yay!
Megan tried to narrow down a thing or two she'd be able to retrieve and get back here with her temporary helper. A mattress would be nice, cardboard may be soft but it kind of sucks. Maybe a small bed? That sounded like a fantastic idea. If she slept out front behind her screen and barricade, there would be some extra room in the lockable back room to store useful things like food and water...
They located the beds eventually and chose a twin size (what? she was small and there wasn't a lot of room behind that screen), grabbing a thin rolled mattress. After a moment's thought, she tore open a packaged duvet and a sheet set and bundled a pillow in it, too. Those, she tied behind her back for ease of movement. She was going to have AN ACTUAL BED. WITH SHEETS. She wasn't about to sleep in a bed covered in grime when there were sheets right here. Mostly because someone claimed the Daniadown, which meant no one else could get sheets.

With the bed ID in their possession, it was time to get out of here. They looked around for the exit signs. Ceiling signs, floor arrows?
Nothing. Oh dear.

((I've hit word count so at this point I'm mostly doing rolls))
They must've missed the signs. The two of them walked around the bedding section, hoping to find a landmark or something. Maybe they could go back the way they came. If they could find it.

They managed to spot something sort of familiar, so they tried that direction. If they could just find the stairs...

This place was horrendous. They had to get downstairs to find the flatpack, but the stairs were nowhere to be found.
