Nights in Destiny City were becoming more temperate. Though the heat remained stifling during the day, they'd reached the time of year where the temperatures dropped significantly come nightfall, anywhere between the high fifties to the low sixties—not cold, but cool, a brief taste of coming fall. Her fuku might be more suited to the summer months, yet Ganymede enjoyed her nights better when the weather was mild.

Tonight turned out to be a dud of a patrol. She'd come across no Negaverse officers up to their energy draining or starseed pulling, and had managed to dust only a single youma before things went quiet. Admittedly, she preferred it that way. A busy evening typically heralded some large event, and after what had happened at the subway station, Ganymede would rather things slow down to allow them all some room to breathe.

Which was the thought on her mind when the felt the blip on her mental radar that denoted a youma nearby. She felt another aura with it—a Knight, in fact, and certainly one strong enough to be handling a youma on his or her own. On any other night, Ganymede might have deemed it better to leave the pair be, but as she had nothing better to do at the moment, she felt the need to at least check on things to make sure all was well.

She came upon the scene slowly, wary of injecting herself into a situation where she might not be wanted.

“Need any help?” she asked.

"Ordinarily I'd say no..." Kairatos responded, but then it was fairly obvious this one had him frustrated. The lumbering vaguely bear like thing wasn't any more powerful than he was, per se, but with much of his arsenal being 'punch the thing'... trying to stay at an angle that wasn't going to leave him new scars was a frustrating challenge, and having help in this circumstance...

He hated to admit needing it but he kind of needed it, though between the Youma and the help that had arrived, it was a little tempting to make some sort of "Bear and the Maiden Fair" joke, and he didn't even like that show.

"Downside to mostly punching monsters out..." He joked, stepping back to avoid a clawed swing. "...Gotta get close enough to punch."

The grin that accompanied this joke was a bit tense under the circumstances.

Ganymede didn't make a habit of interfering in fights unless an ally was in need, and even then she felt a little guilty for it unless she was specifically invited. Some people got a little testy about it, she'd learned over the years. She didn't quite understand why, except that it likely had something to do with pride.

This knight didn't answer with a “no,” though it wasn't an outright “yes” either. It left Ganymede debating with herself. Either she could stand back and watch the knight continue to struggle, or she could intervene and make quick work of the youma.

Any other youma and she might have let the knight muddle his way through, but she had to admit the claws looked a little concerning.

“Upside to having magic...” she said. “... You don't have to get too close to kick some a**.”

She made sure the knight was not in the line of fire when she called her attack. “Searing Passion!”

The effect as almost immediate. The bear-like youma stopped swinging its claws around and paused. If a bear-like thing could look concerned, this one certainly managed it. Moments later it released a growl that sounded somewhat like a groan. Then it was howling, scratching at itself desperately, like it was trying to release something from inside of itself. Ganymede watched dispassionately. She'd long gotten over the effect her magic had on youma.

People? That was another story.

“If this doesn't take care of it, another hit or two'll do it,” she said.

Quote:
The enemy's focus narrows upon a single desire which manifests itself in a physical heating of the body that grow progressively stronger through the duration of the attack, until the target feels as if they are burning up from the inside. They're likely to feel weak and disoriented once the attack has burned itself out. The attack reaches its peak after about 45 seconds.

He wasn't sure what the intricacies of her powers were exactly, just that they were effective enough to give him a chance to prepare to swing another blow... right as the thing decided to dissolve into dust, as though it were doing so out of spite just so he couldn't quite land that last hit, his armored hand swinging through a small cascade of dry dust and throwing the knight a hair off balance in surprise when he failed to make contact.

"Damn." Kairatos eyebrows shot up as the Youma evaporated, shooting Ganymeade an appreciative look. "I do have magic it just doesn't do damage. Did manage to convince a guy once that he was coming out on the loosing end of things even after he broke my collarbone though. Probably woulda been worse if he hadn't hit the shoulder piece." He gestured vaguely at the bulls head on his shoulder. "He's looking to purify these days. Good guy. Still doesn't know he had me in a sling for weeks." He coughed sheepishly and shrugged, a hair guiltily, at this careful omission. "Nice damn magic though. I'm Kairatos of Mars."

The last bit was... fairly obvious he figured, but seemed polite.

Ganymede tried to stifle her laughter when the knight went off balance, but a low chuckle worked its way out of her regardless. She covered her mouth with one of her hands for a moment and cleared her throat in the hopes that it wouldn't be too obvious. She certainly wasn't looking to inadvertently offend someone she'd only just met.

“Oh, trust me, my lower level magic's pretty damned useless,” she commiserated. “Makes people obsess over the things they desire, but when what they want is you dead at their feet it's sort of counterproductive. So I stick with the more powerful stuff and only use the rest of it when I'm desperate and hoping for a distraction.”

Her attention was momentarily piqued by the mention of someone wanting to purify, and though Ganymede's brow lifted she kept her curiosity to herself for the time being. Instead, she held out one of her hands for a polite shake as she continued, her tone one of ease and nonchalance, “Name's Ganymede. Nice to meet you. Sorry for barging in like that, but those claws were getting just a bit too close for comfort, yeah? Looked like a tough one. I mean, as far as youma go. Been kind of quiet these last couple of weeks, I'm surprised you found one to put up a good fight.”

"Yeah no, that's only good if you know enough to play bait from a safe spot." And that would take a kind of dangerous level of knowledge of the subject. "I think they come looking for me sometimes." He admitted wryly. "I was a purification myself, and I've been kind of... loud about it. Cocky even." New Years had taken something of that out of him, if not entirely, and he shifted his weight awkwardly from foot to foot as he reached to take her hand and give it a firm polite shake. "They finally took issue to that. Took 'em long enough. I thought I was going to have to burn something rude into the park grass." He joked. "But no hell no, don't apologize. I don't think I was walking out of that without some new scars without a hand."

Ganymede's interest was further piqued. Her brow raised higher, her curiosity noticeable now.

“You were part of the Negaverse,” she said.

It wasn't a question. Kairatos made the answer obvious enough. In any case, Ganymede didn't sound put off by it. Her opinions about the Negaverse and her reactions to them had changed since New Years—more hostile and aggressive—but the purification of a former agent still filled her with hope. There were those among the Negaverse who were unhappy with their lot in life; it was simply a matter of finding them and offering the necessary help to free them.

“Congrats on getting out,” she said. “I can't imagine it was easy. And it's a big change. Probably took a little getting used to. I... my best friend was in the Negaverse. Wolframite. I guess he was pretty disenchanted with them by the end. Can't really say I blame him, considering. How long have you been out? If you don't mind me asking...”

"It wasn't easy, and it sounds like it's getting harder, now that someone finally checked the rosters and figured out they've been loosing a handful." This had become a complicated issue... keep shouting into the darkness that there was a way out, like he'd been planning, or become quieter, in the hopes of keeping the others safe... But it probably wasn't that simple, and egotistical to think the changes hinged on the year it had taken for someone to connect the dots.

"New Years was the anniversary of my purification. I got an nice chat with an agent as a present." He grimaced. "I remember Wolframite though. He and a couple others had the rocks to mouth off to Zinkenite." He almost grinned at the memory, but it didn't take long for it to slip. "Not that he let that slide. Zinkenite wasn't the type to be told he might have made a s**t-a** decision. Anything that made it sound like he might not be as smart as he insisted he was. Is he really out? Good for him... Probably wouldn't remember me. I was Realgar."

Ganymede winced at the mention of New Year's and felt the need to ask, “They didn't go after you too, did they? When they caught a bunch of us? I can't imagine they would have taken a betrayal like that lightly.”

She tried to speak lightly but there was a slight edge to her voice. New Year's was not an easy subject for her to discuss, even in passing. She still bore the scars, and the cold, phantom pain low in her gut where the starseed came to rest.

“Zinkenite,” she observed a moment later. “I've heard that name before. He's a General King, isn't he? I'm happy to say I haven't had the displeasure of meeting him. I seem to run into Laurelite more often than not. And, well, Apatite was the one who orchestrated the whole New Year's thing. Can't say I've ever seen her either. But, yeah, Wolframite's out. His boyfriend Bismuthite too. Camelot and I got them out. They go by Gevaudan and Hawara these days. Turn's out Wolframite was a knight of Ganymede all along,” she finished with a wink.

"They... definitely... did not take it lightly." Kairatos winced at the topic, shifting his weight from foot to foot, thinking of his own scars, of Schorl's detailed description of what she could have done with the cane. The thought of Wolframite and Bismuthite getting out though... that brought back an grin, even if it wasn't quite as bright as he'd have liked it to be. "Oh hey, good for them! I remember those two. We weren't like, buddies or anything but I remember them. Some of the only ones to give some hell to Zink-the-dink for his choices. Not... that this went terribly well, but damn it was nice to see some others who didn't think Metalia spoke out of his a**."

He was pretty sure he'd at least spoken with Bismuthite... thought he was the one with the eyes that were old before his time maybe. But maybe that had changed for the better now. "Good on you and TinMan." He paused, considered and then added with an wicked twinkle of amusement. "PLEASE Say you were the one that purified Wolfie. That would have been ********' perfect."

Ganymede noticed the way Kairatos winced, how he shifted his weight around, and she thought he surely must have known what it had been like all those months ago, that he may have experienced it all first hand, and she felt guilty that she'd not known, that his name had not come up among the many Valhalla had been able to extract from one of the Negaverse's officers.

How many more had there been whose names she did not know?

She managed a smile at the way he spoke of Zinkenite. It was careless, blasé, and disrespectful. She liked that.

“Unfortunately Camelot had that honor,” she said. She felt a little cheated, that it had not been her specifically who'd brought Gevaudan to the light, but more than anything she was happy that he was free from the darkness. She would forever be grateful to Camelot for that.

“I purified Hawara,” Ganymede continued. “Turns out two is a little too much for one royal to handle. Just one was exhausting. I hate to say it, but it might be a good thing so few officers want to cross over. If there was ever, like, a mass exodus or something I don't know how we'd handle it with so few royals around. There's... what? Camelot. Polaris. Chronos, I guess. Castor.” She paused to pull a face. “The rainbow one. Me, now. God, that sounds really presumptuous. But, I mean, I have the power. I have to use it.”

"Tin... I mean Camelot's a good guy. He's the one who introduced me to the idea you could purify. He couldn't at the time though, so Iris did. She's the Rainbow one. Haven't heard much from either of them in a while though. Glad he's doing alright though."
He wasn't quite sure what he felt about not having heard from Iris. After leaving Tartarus, he hadn't -wanted- to talk to her, and he still wasn't sure how he'd have felt, not knowing that she turned up her nose at knights. Maybe that was why he'd never seen anyone waving her banner. Then again she supposedly had a team too, but he'd only ever seen quiet, meek little Psyche and *********. Not really 'team' so much as... he couldn't even really call them 'pit crew' and feel like it fit.

"It really took it out of her too..." He frowned, thinking back and added. "It... took it out of Zink too.. but, but they can just, feed stolen energy. Be nice if there was a way for order to do the same." He wondered if anyone had ever tried.

"******** though, I hate to say it but I'd rather throw someone in front of a ******** bus before sending them to Castor. Probably hurt less. b*****d is clean out of his head... I don't know what happened to make his hair go all freaky white but I don't think it did him any favors." He tapped the side of his head in implication of where he thought the problem was. "He bounced me off a goddamn wall hard, then offered to get me lodging at a -brothel-. Turned him down because I didn't want to be where he could find me... and anyway I'd already been out for most of a year."

He cringed at the memory, still remembering the black and blue up his back from it. "That was a lot of ice packs. This damn thing doesn't come with much padding." He gestured vaguely at his armor, rivets and buckles and metal pins that had all been aggressively slammed into his flesh.

He didn't think she sounded presumptuous, but he -felt- pretty whiny. "I just.. I dunno. I don't trust the b*****d... You gotta wonder though... if the negaverse can move energy around... why can't we? I mean... they're stealing it... but..."

She had actual knights. His princess was, so to speak, in another castle but even if it turned out that Wo... that Gevaudan... and those like him could help... it would absolutely change the game.

There was a part of Ganymede—the part of her that believed in fairness—that felt a little bad that they were badmouthing Castor. Then she remembered how much of a crazy a*****e he was and consoled herself with thoughts that he deserved it. She felt a little vindicated hearing Kairatos's mini rant about him. It wasn't often she heard people speak against the psychotic Prince.

“Castor is a bit and an acquired taste,” was the nicest thing she could think to say. She finished the comment with, “Unfortunately it's a taste I've yet to acquire.”

It was more than distrust for her. If there was one person she hated on the side of Order, it was Castor. The way he spoke down to her, the way he so carelessly murdered Negaverse agents in cold blood, his bloated opinion of himself, it struck her as familiar, because she knew many Negaverse officers who behaved in a similar fashion.

Some people were simply too dangerous. Castor was one of them.

“They're stealing energy from civilians,” Ganymede concluded when Kairatos trailed off. “Which is morally reprehensible, even if it doesn't cause major harm to civilians in the long run. It is a pretty unfair advantage, though, that they can replenish their energy by stealing it from others. Or eating starseeds.”

She winced. More than the memories of Benitoite swallowing a starseed, she thought of her time in captivity. She brought a hand to her stomach, where she often thought she could still feel the starseed's cold burn within her.

“But there are ways for us to share energy between one another,” she said. She held out her glowing palms. “The Senshi and Knights that glow. Some of us can transfer energy to other people. If the skill was more widespread than it is, I imagine it would help quite a bit.”

Ryuthulhu
PostPosted: Wed Dec 30, 2015 6:50 am

"Yeah, but there are only a handful... and can they do that to boost someone who's just purified?" He folded his arms thoughtfully and frowned, still slightly uncomfortable with the glow. Was that what it would take to help out? It seemed...he wasn't sure. "I gotta be honest, I don't quite get the glowing thing... it's had me a bit on edge since Babylon did it. Nearly killed himself too."

Ida had seemed quite pleased with herself... and there were others, none of whom had apparently half killed themselves in the process, but he still didn't think he really -understood- the whole thing, only that it involved a lot of time at your wonder...

"But hey, you know, maybe I'm the slow kid in class on the subject."

Maybe there was another way around it though. Maybe. Otherwise it seemed like a backward system, if they supposedly served but would never be as strong as the ones they were supposed to be protecting and helping. If the negaverse could just -take- from everyone, why couldn't just -anyone- give?

“I don't see why they couldn't,” Ganymede said in response to Kairatos's question. “I just don't know how much good it would do, or how much energy would actually be transferred over. I haven't had many opportunities to do it so far.”

The unease she could understand. She'd been uneasy about it in the beginning, if only because she was unsure how it had happened. She still didn't really know, except that the skies had turned blue on Ganymede after a particularly vivid memory, and ever since then no one had been able to grasp her starseed. Considering the benefit this state offered, she didn't have much to complain about, but the not knowing was frustrating to say the least.

“I'm not sure a lot of us really get it,” she continued. “I'm still not entirely clear on when and how it happens, or why it happens to some people and not others. It's something to do with the homeworld, but I don't know if there are, like, requirements or if it's just completely random. It'd be nice if more than a handful of people could do it, though. For the energy benefits and the whole can't-touch-my-starseed thing. Princess is sort of the same way, in my experience. Hell if I know why it happened to me. I wasn't... I mean... did you have those weird dreams? About the future?”

She felt self-conscious saying it. She still wasn't entirely sure what the dreams meant, or how many people had memories of it, or if any of it had been real. But she remembered being asked about it during her time in captivity, so the Negaverse was at least aware of it.

“I wasn't a Princess then,” she eventually finished.
