Stages Apprentices
Location Taliuma, Beach

Cadmus was finally making headway in his journey to finding his grandparents. The boy was beyond nervous about what would happen if he found them but he was still somehow managing to forge ahead. At this point, he had absolutely nothing to lose since his own family had disowned him. Cadmus knew it had been coming, that when he said he wanted to be apart of another clan--which he wasn't certain yet--it was all over. While he would miss his family or what could have happened with them in the future, Cadmus was happy to be away from them. He still stressed over his appearance, mannerisms and other things that he had been forced to do but that would go away with time, right?

The boy hadn't been to certain as to where to begin his journey other than trying the Celestial plane. Of course he had to make it beyond Eowyn first. As it was, Cadmus found himself sitting down on the beach of the northern town Taliuma looking out at the sea before he made his way into the market to get a few supplies for the journey. Cadmus didn't have much to his name which meant he couldn't afford much. Again, his family felt he didn't need anything more than the bag he had packed. "Well." He said with a sigh, letting the sand drift through his fingers. "At least they let me leave." He said to himself with a frown, his nose scrunching up in the process. That may have been a stretch considering the bruises that dotted his arms and the welts on his back from his grandparents. His mother didn't believe in physical harm--beautiful specimens shouldn't be touched--but she did nothing to stop it. His father? For a moment the boy had thought he would step in and stop it from happening, but he didn't. What did his father do? He turned away from what was happening and led his wife off to visit friends. Cadmus had never felt so alone in the world. He had always believed that they at least loved him out of genetic obligation but that was definitely not the case.

Cadmus let out a groan as he laid on his back. It hurt quite a bit to lay down, let alone move, but he had to keep doing both. The sand wasn't too bad though. Maybe he could sleep there on the beach tonight. He'd never been this far away from hom--north before so he had no idea how the locals felt about him sleeping on the beach. He didn't really have the funds to pay for night in an inn since all his money had been put towards his ticket to the Celestial plane. He shook his head in an attempt to clear his head. Sleep was still several hours away. He could worry about it then.

Tanarah tuckered low, fingertips to the sand, one leg braced behind the other as she drew a breath. One, two…

Three!

And she was off, kick starting into a dash across the beach. After her first failed encounter with a nest of ysali on her own, Tanarah felt, if anything, invigorated. Motivated, and spurned by the physical evidence that she had a ways to go yet. But she could get there, with enough drive. With that attitude, she pushed her body forward, bare feet beating over the hard, wet sand directly where the surf licked inwards to rush over her toes on impact, only to to be driven faster, faster. As her lungs began to sting with want, a grin edged up at the corners of her lips, and she started making goals to pace of her breath as it swept in and out.

That rock, just that rock up ahead—come on, be there yesterday. And then, as that one was passed, the next, and another: that mound of sand or that pile of driftwood, where that bird is standing, where the sea foam just ran to, and whatever you do, don’t stop.

So focused in her own challenge did she become, that Tanarah almost didn’t notice the body until she was all but literally upon him, and hop, skip, stagger-skidding to a stop in the wet sand in order to turn a stare on it. Were they dead? But no. Closer inspection immediately confirmed otherwise, and Tana squinted, edging up closer to the dry sand to get a better peek a the—boy? It could have been either, she supposed, but something made her guess boy, and she spent a pause catching her breath before dusting her hands over herself—and then promptly moving to stand in his sun and cast her shadow on his face, in hopes it might rouse him.

Dovaa, from the looks of things. And young.

She wondered if he was an orphan, or lost, or a refugee, being that the increasing tension between the races seemed to be giving rise to ever more of those. “Hey, you,” she greeted, toeing his shoulder for emphasis. “This is my beach. Are you lost? I can tell you which way town is.” Frowning as a slightly closer inspection brought welts and bruises to her attention, she folded her arms. “Do you need a healer? You look awful.

Unfortunately, Cadmus had been too lost in his thoughts to notice the girl that came bounding across the sand in his direction. He thought something passed over him but the boy assumed it was a bird or something. It did sound really close though. . . When he felt something poking at his shoulder, his eyes opened and focused on the young girl that stood over him in an attempt to block out the sun. "Hey. . . " He greeted her. Why was she poking at him? Why was she talking to him? Cadmus wasn't sure that he minded necessarily but it was unexpected. He didn't think someone cared about a boy laying down at the beach. At least she hadn't poked a little further on his arm where a large bruise was hidden by his shirt, otherwise he might have shouted at her and scared the life out of her.

"No. I'm not lost." He frowned, sitting up a little. Did he look lost? Well, he wasn't not lost necessarily. Could you be lost if you didn't know where to go to begin with? Cadmus' attention focused on the girl when she mentioned the healer. Why did he need one? He followed her gaze and noticed some of the bruises and welts were peeking up from the top of his shirt. "Umm." Cadmus cleared his throat. "Why do you care?" He asked, suspicion clearly written in his expression. "Do you know one?" Not that he was really going to take her offer--he had no money to spare--but he decided to ask anyways, because why not?

While Cadmus wasn't really ignored by the other clan members back hom--at his former home--he wasn't used to someone caring. If the other clan members knew what happened in his house they never said or did anything about it. He felt invisible for the most part. They saw him enough to make snide comments or whispering words about his family, but they didn't really see him. At least that's what he thought. Already he was suspicious of why this complete stranger would notice or care as to the state of his body. Was she going to steal what very little he had? Lead him to an alley where he'd be killed or something? It wasn't healthy to think that way but he had been taught to be suspicious and cautious around others. She had horns, so she was dovaa but at the same time the strange girl didn't look like any dovaa he had seen before. Then again, he didn't know too many.

Tanarah blinked, and then squinted suspiciously. “I don’t care,” she said. “You just look like you got clobbered by somethin’ big and nasty. It’s pretty obviously, lookin’ at you. And sure I do. My daddy’s a healer. The best there ever was. Ever, in all the continents. He could fix all your little dinky wounds right quick like.”

She tilted her head, debating and resisting the urge to glance down the shoreline to where, eventually, the beach lead back to their house. On the one hand, the boy looked fairly bent out of shape, and she was fairly certain her fathers wouldn’t mind such a young guest, even unexpected, since he seemed to need help. On the other, she knew well enough — even at age nine — that the relationship her fathers had wasn’t approved of by all, particularly in regards to her Papa’s mixed blood, and revealing their home to ‘just anyone’ was dangerous in its own right.

She nibbled at her lower lip, tugging at an ear and frowning.

“It’s just, if you’re not lost, then I dunno what you’re doin’ this far out,” she said at length. “You don’t look like a soldier. Where’re your parents? What’re you doin’ here on my beach?” A pause. “And what's your name?

While Cadmus listened to her talk about how great her father he became more suspicious. The best there ever was, was definitely a lie because how could she even know? Of course now he wanted to test her. "If you don't care then why did you ask?" An eyebrow rose and a slight smirk lifted at his lips. A light blush crept up his cheeks and looked away from her, towards the sand where his hand rested. "Something for sure." He agreed. "How do you know your dad's the best?" He genuinely wanted to know.

His eyes reached hers once more when he noticed her moving. "I'm. . ." He paused in his explanation. Why was he telling her at all? She could still cut him open and eat his liver. Cadmus wasn't sure if it was worth it to trust her with the full story. Maybe he didn't have to tell her everything. "I'm trying to locate my grandparents. They live in the Celestial Plane. I think." He admitted. It was the truth but he was leaving a lot out in that explanation. "I'm not a soldier because I'm too young." He looked at her like she was crazy for a moment. Obviously he was too young. He also didn't have a clan, although, she probably didn't know that by looking at him. Or did she? "Relaxing, is that so bad?" His voice rose slightly. "You ask a lot of questions for someone who doesn't care."

"What's your's?" He asked. When she gave hers then he might tell her what his name was. Already he told her too much information.

“Tanarah,” Tana answered without pause. “And I ask ‘cause it’s good to know things. Just ‘cause you talk to someone doesn’t mean you suddenly think they’re super special. It’s good to know what’s goin’ on. Doesn’t mean I care about you, just don’t wanna not know.”

She shifted her weight, tilting it to one hip and nocking her head to one side as she did.

“I know my daddy’s the best because everyone here comes to him, and he’s willing to heal anyone. Not like other healers, who only take and choose the people they like. He’s a real healer. And, he’s a master. Lord Marcus Ysaride himself did his dragon ritual with him…so he could eat you, if he wanted. But he wouldn’t, ‘cause he’s nice. Nicer’n me, anyhow.”

She paused again, considering the boy before her before continuing.

“My daddy is dovaa…he might know, if you talked to him, where your grandparents are if you know their family name. He used t’ live on the Plane. And, if you’re lookin’ for a better place to lay than the sand, or you’re hungry…” She trailed off, figuring that was suggestion enough. If he seemed unappreciative, maybe she could just leave him in the sand. He wasn’t exactly her responsibility after all, and he had said himself that he wasn’t lost.

He looked at her suspiciously. "So you want to know, just because you can. Sounds like a good reason." He rolled his eyes and huffed. This girl was probably crazy or something. Who wants to know something just because they can? Okay, maybe he was guilty of that sometimes. "Cadmus. My name is Cadmus." His lips pursed a little after he admitted what his name was. Why was he telling her this? Maybe he had been wanting to talk to someone all this time and since she was here. . . He didn't know anyone else outside of the clan.

Cadmus perked up when Tanarah mentioned that people came from all over to see her father. He had the idea that maybe his grandparents would have needed healing and visited with him. He of course realized it would be a long shot for that to happen, but her father was a great starting point to finding out more information. If he was being honest he needed healing too. The wounds she couldn't see were much worse and that was just the external. "That's. . . kind of cool. . . I guess." He admitted. Cadmus managed to hide how cool he really found that information. Her dad really was impressive. The fact he had even met Lord Marcus was another huge bonus, too.

When Tanarah mentioned his father might know where his grandparents were or anything at all about them, he perked up. He had been hoping but the fact that she agreed with his mental thoughts was a good sign. A little weird too because she said what he had been thinking, but also kind of funny. "Do you think he would?" Unfortunately the boy hadn't been able to hide how much hope he had that her father would know something. At her next remark though he stared at her with wide eyes. Did she just invite him to eat and sleep at her house? "Why would you invite me? You don't even know me. . . What if I wanted to eat your liver or something?" He asked with a drawn expression. This was getting to good to be true. Were other people really like this?

Tanarah’s eyelids narrowed into thin slits. Eat her…liver? Was this boy serious? Where had he even come from? Who had raised him? Did he even know what a liver was? A moment after that thought came and went, she wondered if he knew what a liver tasted like, and quickly dismissed that musing as well.

“Wanting to know because you can is a good reason,” she asserted, mostly because it sounded as though he didn’t believe her. “Why else should you want to know something? To change the world? To write a book? To hurt people? Sometimes you never know what you might need to know later, so learnin’ first when you can is best…anyway. I do think my daddy might know, ‘cause he knew lots of people and knows lots of people, and still has family that lives up there. C’mon…”

For better or for worse, she offered a hand, reaching out to him to help him up.

“I’ll show you the way. You’re too small to ‘eat my liver’, anyhow, stupid. And if you tried, I’d break your face. Our house is way down the beach, and if you’re real bad, Daddy or Papa can just dump you off out in the ocean where no one can find you. But if you’re good…maybe you could have dinner with us. And you can meet my sister.” Tana grinned. “I bet she’d like meeting someone new, too. So long as you don’t say you’ll eat her.” She accompanied the closing comment with a warning glance, which she hoped conveyed her desire that he do no such thing if he made it within range of her twin.
