If experience has taught us anything, noisy packaging can ruin a perfectly good plan. Since the 'Great Sunchip Bag Fiasco Of Two Weeks Ago' and 'Twinkie Wrappers of Two Days Later', we spend some time to transfer packaging safely. This is where you Freshmen come in.
To complete this task, your character is given a temporary key to the food storage units. All of the food had already been counted and accounted for by the time they get there. Their only two objectives to their time in Food Prep are as follows: Organize by type (i.e. perishable vs non-perishable), and Repackage everything that can/needs to be. Once they are finished, they are to return the key, and their work is once more counted - to ensure they haven't taken more than what they are rationed to take.
To complete this task: - Roll 4d20 however you'd like. (You can either do 1 post of 4d20, or 4 posts of 1d20)
First Dice: How many pieces of food you organized. Second Dice: How long it took you to perform the organization. Each number represents one minute. Third Dice: How many pieces of food you repackaged. Fourth Dice: How long it took you to repackage the food. Each number represents one minute.
- Example: I roll 4d20. I get 17, 11, 11, 5. I organized 17 pieces of food into perishables/non perishables, and it took me 11 minutes. I then repackaged 11 pieces of those foods, and it took me five minutes. - You can make excuses as to why the numbers are skewed - in this case, I would say that something happened outside of the kitchen area, and they had to stop me from continuing my work. Or, you know, my character was lazy and the last six pieces sounded like much too much work. If you have excess (example: you organized 5 pieces, but repackaged 20), assume someone else left organized food without repackaging them. More work for you! - Once you roll your 4d20, and write a post of no less than 500 words, you can consider this quest completed, and may count it towards your rankings.
Obtaining Credits - Add up your dice, divide it by 4, then divide that answer by 2. This is how many credits you earn. - Example: I rolled 17, 11, 11, 5. I add them together. 17 + 11 + 11 + 5 = 44. I divide 44 by 4 and get 11. I divide 11 by 2 and get 5.5. Round up, and I managed to get away with 6 course credits.
If you wish to do this in a group: - You may! - Each player in that thread must roll 4d20 - after all, they're there to work together, not all do the same work. - Basically, you can just RP with each other while you play with food.
Quote:
OOC Rules - Assume the key giving, key returning, and counts are all done off-screen. You can just mention them in RP! - When it comes to obtaining credits, always round up if there is a decimal point. - This quest will be considered complete if you roll a 4d20 and write at least 500 words. Because of the ability to win a substantial amount of credits, we will be checking this using this word count tool, so make sure you are getting at least 500 words!
The key had been granted for their task and Cecil made his way cautiously to the kitchen area making sure that Hitsu stayed close behind him. There wasn't a great deal of risk being inside the university but that didn't mean bad things didn't happen.
"When I decided I wanted to work for a school I never imaged it would be in the cafeteria." It was an attempt at joking to keep the mood light, whether it would work or not he didn't know but he smiled regardless.
Once they had finally reached the kitchens and the locked pantry area Cecil carefully turned the key in the lock to keep it from clicking loudly and slowly opened the doors to see what they would be facing. He knew basically what they needed to do but had no idea what sort of state the pantry had been left in.

Hitsu was much more one to follow than to lead, and it seemed best to let Cecil take care of requesting keys. Even though they were really all on equal ground for the most part, it still seemed only right to let an actual faculty member do the escorting.
She tried to keep on a brave facade around others, and admittedly it was both easier and more difficult around Cecil. She knew she could be honest about her worries around him, but the last thing she wanted to do was bring down his mood too. As if it wasn't already depressing enough that they'd be tending to food that they had to so carefully ration. Hitsu found herself, more and more by the day, worrying that her friend might not be getting enough to eat. She probably should have worried about everyone as a whole, but he was considerably bigger than the rest of their company.
The try at humor still got an honest smile from her, and she gave a short soft sound of amusement. "I figured that my first job might have been an internship at one of the local clinics, but I guess this work isn't as stressful. At least nothing in here is going to give us any sass."
Standing back a couple of paces, she strained her ears for any sounds around them or beyond the door. Just because there shouldn't be anyone - or anything - locked inside the cafeteria didn't mean that there couldn't be. Hopefully the place wasn't mostly destroyed like everywhere else.
He was glad when he at least got a smile, his own growing slightly in turn. At least for the moment he could be a little more lighthearted about everything. "I have a feeling there are plenty of people here that can be sassy if you would like them to be." There little group was certainly diverse and as the month had drawn out and everyone had gotten less sleep the tension was running high. Sass was to be expected.
"Why don't you take this side and I will take this one," He gestured at the opposite side of the shelf. "And we can meet in the middle yeah?"
Pocketing the key Cecil went to work grabbing random things to organize them first. It was tedious but it helped distract him. "So how have you been holding up lately? Are you sleeping okay?"
"Oh, I've got no doubts about that. I still enjoy my peace and quiet, even if the quiet is a little eerie now. It's unbelievable, really, just how much noise there really was before." At least they'd be able to - hopefully - hear any intruders without the background sounds of traffic, electronics and the constant loud chatter that had filled the halls and rooms before.
Hitsu nodded in response to Cecil's suggestion, picking up a few foodstuffs from the rations already counted out for them and laying them out in front of her. The sorting was the easiest part, or so she had anticipated initially... Some foods in particular were a mystery on whether or not they could survive like cockroaches in radiation. Particularly some of the sweets. She could only make her safest guesses, there.
"All things considered? I'm doing alright." Hitsu said, and continued perhaps a bit too casually. "I don't think I've cried for a little over a week." She was proud of that fact, ok?
On the question of sleep, she shrugged. "I'm not falling asleep standing up. That counts as okay, I think?" When every little sound had one waking in a fight-or-flight adrenaline rush, it was a little hard to sleep for long periods. "I'm just worried about you getting enough to eat, Cecil..."
The quiet was eerie. It was almost hard to relive the memories of the noise that had once filled the university. The ambient chatter, the hum of electronics, and more were lost leaving nothing behind except silence. "I prefer a little noise myself." Maybe that was just him. "A bit of music would be nice but I doubt its safe to play any now."
Cecil frowned a bit at what Hitsu had confessed, looking over the things he had already organized and double checked it for accuracy. "I'm....I'm so sorry Hitsu. I know it's not easy." He took a moment to reach over and rest a hand on her shoulder. No doubt a lot of her worries mirrored his own. He understood but it didn't change anything.
He pulled back as she divulged her sleeping habits, cracking a small grin at least. Cecil would definitely not tell her he had done just that a time or two already.
"Oh, uh.." With rations it was hard to get enough to eat for sure but there were others to think about. Cecil didn't feel it was right to take more than anyone else so he was just careful with what he got. True it left him hungry more often than not but at least he could survive. "I'm alright really. I definitely don't want to be the reason we run out of food sooner rather than later. It's kind of like a diet plan." One he hadn't chosen on his own.
The door opened with a creak, slowly, when Justin poked his head in at an awkward angle at the duo in the pantry. "I am here to relieve you of your Cosmic Brownies." he began in a rather stern voice, wiggling his fingers with the aura of ill intent.
...and then just fully stopped the charade. "Actually I finished cleaning the bathrooms early and Charlie pointed his horn here and said to help you all with dealing with the Non- perishables." he visibly deflated, sad that he couldn't continue with the joke.
He wasn't going to admit that maybe they should be wary of him if there were Cosmic brownies in here. The Pantry was pretty spacious, with him quickly eyeing things that he was used to in his former profession, salt and sugar and spices, and the scary amount of Twinkies and Sno-Balls that sat there with some chips and NO DIP. It was a sad sight to behold.
Justin was fairly sure there was enough of the creme filled spongecakes to drown a small child in DIA-BEETUS.

"I'll give you that; music would be nice." She smiled toward him softly. "Playing it softly might not hurt, but it would be finding something that could play it to begin with." That still worked, or didn't eat up power from the generators.
Glancing to Cecil's work, she laughed at herself. "I guess I'm talking too much. Stop talking and start working, self." She didn't think they were so much timed for the task, so it didn't matter so much. Being able to talk helped a bit, even if the subjects weren't really destined to be positive.
When she felt Cecil's hand on her shoulder, she paused and had to mentally steel herself. At least he hadn't hugged her. She probably wouldn't have been able to keep it together if he had. As it went, Hitsu's gaze remained down on her task and she took a moment to reach up and put her hand over Cecil's in small means of returning the gesture.
"I'm sure they're just as worried as we are, but everything will be fine." They're all alright. They're all safe. They're all alive. They have to be.
Noting his hesitation, the girl sighed softly but seemed to accept the answer for the most part. The mood had turned gloomy so quickly, and feeling to blame she sought to try and bring it back around again.
She jabbed a finger at his side lightly. "Yeah, like you of all people need to be on any sort of diet plan."
The creak of the door had her whipping her head toward the sound, and breathing out a sigh a second later. "You dork," she said to Justin, though not in an unwelcoming tone. "If I find something in my rations, I'm sure I can part with it. Never much cared for brownies, and I doubt lacking one or two will make me starve."
Soon after Justin entered the room, Kammy peeked in before the door fully closed, seeing there was a few people in here. "Justin you are not allowed to eat all the brownies because I want some too. And some Ramen. And chocolate." At this point she was just listing foods she hadn't eaten in ages, then stopped and eyed Hitsu and Cecil with much awkwardness. "Oh, I uhh, came to help too. I'll help. With that." Her hands waved in the general direction that was the food Help, socializing, what was this thing.
Okay they were talking about food now, that was good. Something she could jump in on. "Cecil needs all the protein shakes, thats what he needs. Guy is jacked, like the best ever barbarian. He also needs a axe too, that would complete the look."
Her hands moved around the table, grabbing food and putting it in places while she thought about the best class for Cecil. Totally had to be strength based.
"H-hey now," Cecil chuckled lightly as Hitsu poked him in the side, rubbing the area to help ease the ticklish sensation. "Just don't worry about it, I'll be fine okay?"
Cecil had been rather focused on their conversation, which in this case was a bad thing, because when the door creaked and Justin peeked his head around to greet them the large man nearly jumped out of his skin. Somehow he managed to stay quiet, keeping his screaming internally as he gave Justin a blank stare.
And then carefully, and as casually as possible, Cecil moved the brownies to the back of the pantry out of sight. He liked them okay, he just wanted one thing to look forward to. "Well, we are still sorting stuff so feel free to join us." Nothing was mentioned of the brownies.
His attention soon turned to Kammy as she entered and his brows furrowed with an awkward smile. "Like...a barbarian? I don't know that I am cut out for the adventurous life of one."
But, he wasn't going to bring them up, while it was pretty shoddy, at least it did catch them by surprise. light pranks was not so common anymore with the way the world became. He was going to ignore the proverbial lance through his heart with Hitsu not appreciating the art that was fudge-y brownies. "Well i know who to ask when we get a few as provisions, thank you Hitsu." he stated earnestly and giving Cecil a pat on the shoulder. "Its a crying shame that we dont have the fortitude to grow produce, can you imagine what it would be like to have fresh carrots and lettuce again?" he chatted idly, putting all the packages of Cup ramen to the side.
Enough to make a 3-D pyramid.

Mr. Hubertson knocked at the door to make his presence known, as he was once told he was too quiet and blended with gray backgrounds too often. Coming inside, he saw the pantry already filled with a line of students working through their individual piles of food, helping to better assess their food needs and preserving what valuable assets the university still had. It was a good thing that a large place had a cafeteria that had been in stock when the place got hit.
"Morning." He said to them in that tired, nasal mumble. "Good to see everyone around." And not lost.
He assumed a spot down the line and using proper knee-bending technique, safety took down a box of food to work with.
OOC
Character's name: Morris Hubertson Character's faction: University Character's journal link:Journal Character's survival stats: Stats BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER Short, balding, 56 year old proffessor with large, thick glasses. Sounds like Droopy Dog.
Each movement was drawn out, slow, and Mr. Hubertson made sure everything was set out in a even line before he even started to organize the food with drawn out precision. Rushing caused accidents, kiddos!
Each article was placed in a line, set before him at even lengths to reach, and he moved as if lost in through yet his eyes, largely magnified from hsi thick glasses, showed he was completely focused on his task.
Each item was set to either side, lined up, and even based on size, and he spent well over a minute on moving one article to each side, somewhat deliberating at times and looking at labels to make sure he made the right decision. Rushing made for mistakes and he wanted to make sure he did his job well.
Packaging was another story and there was a procedure to follow when packaging food for later consumption. Taking the first item, he read the directions and then took out a package to re=seal the item, first making sure to relieve it of any air before sealing. He did this multiple times, opening the bag, pressing out air, and resealing only to seem unsatisfied with the result and not finding that the seal had even closed properly. He tried to do this again and again, taking different approaches but nothing drastic than the former trials, and all meeting the same result.
By anyone else's standard, it was fine, but he was concerned with how this one piece of food might spoil and sicken another person on their team. the food artcle wasn't something he felt anyone should really eat and at current conditions, might already be unsafe, but further spoilage was important and he continued to press until it met his standards. Then he checked and conducted sevearl minor tests, mostly revolving around tugging and pulling on the packaging, to see how eaisly it could unravel.
