Before everything had gone as they did, Juliette had acquired herself a very simple umbrella from the drugstore. As one could always do, the devices had been so easy to come by after all. Even when she was younger, they were just much more simple in design and variation. No a days, they retracted, were conspicuous or even loud in color and appearance. She recalled that Mr Pickle Wickles had one that even looked a little like one of those Japanese swords.
But they were also now a little scarce, an odd thing that. And they were needed and not just for daily necessities when it could possibly rain or if the sun was just a little too hot. They were the symbol of her new little community and those lovely young dears who had taken up leadership had told them they would be their weapons. (Goodness, really). So, more needed to be found.
And really, Juliette found it no trouble to go looking. Even on her own. She might have been a little on the older side (her mind slipping just a bit without her really noticing) but she was still an active elder citizen and capable. They had also been very kind enough to put her keycard on a retractable cord and clip least she happened to lose it.
So, she ventured out and began to hunt. So far, not finding too much on her way. (And maybe she could keep an eye out for any of her precious fur babies.)

Perhaps it was because she wasn't wandering too far out from the complex itself that she was having a little difficulty in finding umbrellas in the pieces of debris that hadn't already been swept through. Everything here must have already been searched through.
No luck just yet. In either fronts. (She did find a dead possum though).

She gently lifted a nearby trash can, ironically labeled 'Keep Canada clean' whilst surrounded by more trash that could possibly fit in it.

Some hours had gone by, as it had been allotted to them, and only after a few of them did Juliette find the need to take a small break. Finding a safe spot to rest her bones wasn't terribly difficult, and even though her mind wasn't as sharp as it used to be it still had some bite to it and she still knew better to find place that had a good vantage point of her surroundings and a back to lean on - least for any surprises. A stoop was the easiest thing. A locked door behind her and a little bit of height.
Fifteen minutes, what she gave herself ... or at least figured she had since her watch hadn't been working for some time now, and she was up no her feet, slowly making her way through some of the remains around the complex. Self consciously she was making her way back as well.
Taking a chance, she pulled on the handle to a parked car that had apparently run itself into a pole. It opened with ease and she began to rummage. Nothing of use seemed to be found under the seats, aside from am empty water bottle and a few receipts. But in the glove compartment she hit a little pay dirt. A simple black collapsible umbrella, still good to use and in good repair.

The next umbrella she found by chance. It was a dirty thing, probably missed with how much seemed to be covering it. From the looks of it it must have been white at one point and belonged to a young child (judging by the size of it). Poor thing probably lost to the virus too.
The greatest discovery of all, however, came near the end of her long trip outside. She had almost gotten back to the little makeshift compound and towards the courtyard for check in when she heard a short little trill and a meow. The older woman simply stopped in her tracks and turned, eyes wide and hopefully. What she found wasn't one of those she lost but there still sat a very beautiful cat. Just looking up at her. Its coat was still glossy and shiny, its tail still puffed. It was a little scrawny, as they all probably looked now, but still at least kept itself fed.
The most important thing was when she knelt down to gain its attention, it came right up to her and rubbed itself against her bony knee. It must have been someone's at some point, still being friendly as it was. "Well, now you shall come with me." She informed it - a girl from the looks of it - and it made no protest to being picked up and carried.
Only two umbrellas from this mission, the Commodore would not reward her for something so little, but she had found something maybe a little better.
