Barricades... Barricades were their best option for survival, Rich had always thought. Humans could survive a few days without water, and longer without food (40 to be exact), but if the Shamblers got in? Forget dehydration and starvation. Barricades and walls were their best, and only, hope.
Now just to make the barricades last seven more days. Chairs and tables from the food court were usually the easiest to use, but they'd need something bigger to last the week. Rich didn't want some cliche of their group lasting till the last day, only to have their weaker barricades compromised, all of the Mall Rats dead and found by the military just hours later.
So it was with zeal and hurried steps that Officer Filth made his way to a kiosk, and heaved a shoulder into it. It hardly budged, and the man quickly realized these things were heavier than they looked.
"Hey! You there! Come help me out!"

There was something about having a space to herself that made Lissa feel craftsy. Now that she had staked claim to the glitter shack, there were so many things to do--why, she could go in search of some matching linens to go with her blanket fort, or maybe even find herself a lamp to see if any of the plugs still worked in the cozy little corner she'd carved for herself in the last hour or so. She was wandering from store to store, her head a mess of ideas, when in the distance she heard a call from a wobbling kiosk.
Out of curiosity more than an eagerness to assist, Lissa approached, rounding the kiosk with an inquisitive stare. She looked from the man to the nearby barricades, their one last line of defense and the main thing keeping them alive, and crunched some numbers, nodding as she stepped closer to give him a hand.
"No need to shout, Rudolph, the cavalry's here," Lissa joked, offering a grin before sliding her way past him and dropping a shoulder into the kiosk. It barely gave way, even as the woman let out a strained grunt and dug her heels in. Damn, guess the guy wasn't messing around with how heavy it was.
"Ugh, how'd they even get this in here?" she huffed, relaxing her arms for a moment as she glanced back. "Let's try this again. I'll push, you pull, alright?"

Lissa, a familiar face (they were all familiar, by now. The mall was big, but there were only so many places someone could go.), just happened to be the body Rich had beckoned over, and he was glad for it. The gal was nice enough, didn't make a big deal out of a lot. The glitter he could do without, but it wasn't anything against the gal herself - Glitter was just problematic.
"Yeah, yeah, missy. My knight in shinin' armor and all that." Rich chuckled, watching her futile attempts at budging the kiosk that had once been chock full of sunglasses, and now stored nothing but dust and roaches. Rich wasn't sure why sunglasses of all things had been looted, but whatever. Probably people trying to escape the city, and they needed to drive - only to meet that wall of vines.
Sunglasses wouldn't do anything to the vines.
"Sounds good ta me." Rich drawled, boots clop-clopping across the tile while he made his way to the other side of the cart. "Push awn three, awright?"

Lissa listened for bootheels rather than watch Rich take his position, and when he spoke a second time she nodded, crouching lower to try and get a better position. "On three, got it. One...two...three!" The woman grunted as she heaved with all of her God-given upper body strength, and while it might have just been her toes losing purchase on the ground, she swore she felt the thing finally budge.

She heaved, and Rich hoe'd - and by some work of Jesus or Buddah or whoever, the damn kiosk was finally starting to move. It was a struggle, that was for certain. Maybe it was that they weren't at full strength, what with limited food and their only hydration being sodas and alcohol. Their muscles had likely atrophied a bit, as well.
But, they would make it, eventually. "The Eastern door's been looking a little sad lately." Rich grunted, steering the kiosk towards said pile of chairs and tables, some missing legs. There was also duct tape, lots of duct tape. "Think it could use a bulwark like this guy, hm?"

It was hard, thankless work to push the kiosk inch after inch, and Lissa was already starting to work up a sweat. She wasn't about to look tired in front of Rich, though, and so she pressed on, grimacing through all the whining her muscles did while she pushed. She didn't used to get tired so easily--maybe all of this apocalypsing really was starting to get to her.
"East Barricade, yeah," she nodded, trying to displace the shortness in her breath. "You just lead the way, big guy, I'm right behind you."

It was growing obvious that Rich and Lissa were going to have to settle in for the long haul, as this damn kiosk was their apparent kryptonite. Talking would help control their breathing, and pass the time. There weren't many other ways to pass the time nowadays.
"You got anyone yer itchin' to see on the outside?" Rich ventured, trying to break the ice passed 'I'm Rich, you're Lissa, and we're moving this thing across the mall.' May as well end these last few days of being stuck together on a good note, right? Maybe make some friends to visit later in the Delta area, or some such. PTSD and all that, right? Yeah.

At Rich's prompting, Lissa eased up on her task, leaning into the kiosk for a little quality rest time.
"Maybe," she shrugged, glancing away from the cowboy and back down the hall she'd come from. "I dunno. I've got friends around, but my parents--my mom's not in town, so who knows?" There was no point in dwelling on the outside world, where so many were dead and dying and worse. The only thing that worrying accomplished was keeping Lissa up at night, and she had a hard enough time sleeping these days.
"Until the quarantine goes down, as far as I'm concerned, it's just us out here, and we're the only ones who made it," Lissa nodded, wiping the sweat from her face as she looked up at the man. "What about you? Got some sweet darlin' waiting on ya?" She tried to mimic the man's characteristic drawl, but it felt sticky and stiff on her tongue.

"Mmm." Rich's face fell behind the kiosk, and the reindeer hat was pulled down a little bit over his brow. Of course, he hadn't talked to much anyone about his wife and daughter, so he couldn't blame Lissa for sprinkling an open sore with a bit o' sea salt. "I s'ppose yer right, it's best ta think of ourselves as the only ones who made it. Makes it easier if there ain't no hopes to dash."
Rich heaved the kiosk as they made a turn, looking over his shoulder just to make sure nothin' was there. Nothin' was even behind 'em, but the atmosphere could make a feller more paranoid than a jack rabbit in a coyote's den. "But, I sure hope I do. Sweet li'l three year old gal, big brown eyes like her momma's. Coral's her name." Rich smiled, briefly taken away to the giggles and coos of the young girl, her curiosity, her lack of staying in the damned house. Too curious for her own good, sometimes.
"But, like ya said, best ta focus on just us right now." He nodded, shaking himself from his daydreamin'. "An' sweetheart, ya gotta be more nasaly. Pretend yer tonsils 'r swollen up and ya can't rightly breathe through yer throat."

Lissa was something of a camp loudmouth, a brassy personality and a jokester with a silver tongue who spent most of her days in the peanut commentary talking about things she had no business being a part of. She ran her mouth, she talked s**t, and a lot of times had nothing to back it up with beyond a shrug and a taunt. She liked to play games, she enjoyed a good tease, and if she was awake and conscious than it was a good bet that she was making conversation.
Lissa Buckly, chatty extraordinaire, stook in silence at Rich's description of his little girl.
"...I hope she's okay," she finally admitted, her voice humble and low. She looked up at Rich with an expression torn raw by pain and understanding, and then she shook herself out of it with a stuttered laugh. "...Ah, yeah, you got me. I've never been able to do accents for s**t. It's just not my thing." She glanced down to the kiosk with a bit of extra color in her face and pressed on it experimentally. "So...we gonna get this to the barricade or what?"

Officer Filth gave Lissa a quiet nod, a small smile of what could be approval or gratitude. It was probably both, to be honest. Lissa was a good gal. "'Preciate it, pardner." There may have been a bit of a sniffle. "There's gonna be hell ta pay if she ain't."
Rich chuckled after the momentary darkness in his demeanor, heaving the kiosk a ways. "'Er what, she says. We're gunna get it there, just you see." He grunted, heaving with all his might, for the last few yards. When it was finally done, the cowboy wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand, beaming at Lissa. "Thanks for givin' me a hand with this. Don' think I coulda done it without y'all."

Working on the barricade was easier than working on the uneasy feeling Lissa got in her gut when Rich nodded at her, and so with a heave she pushed her shoulder back into the kiosk, trying to likewise shove the thought from her mind. It was closer than she'd been thinking it was, and as it thudded into place she let out a sigh of relief. "We make a good team, Cowboy," she winked in response, patting him on the back. "You can call on me any time you need some heavy lifting done."
