Quest #2: Establishing a Personal Base:

Description: Malls are big, and there's more than enough room for every Mall Rat to make their home there, and your home can always use improvements! Collect some supplies, find a safe space to sleep through the night, and, well. Make yourself at home away from home.

Goals:

Step 1: MAKE IT HABITABLE.
You as a survivor need to find something that will work as a bed, something to store your personal items in, and a way to get some privacy for changing. (No washrooms, because no store in the mall has enough space to dedicate an employee-only bathroom). That and people keep taking your furniture to help reinforce the barricades... Looks like it's time to replace everything again.

Roll 1d10. If even, you succeed. If odd, don't worry! Just roll again till you get even.

Step 2: MAKE IT DEFENSIBLE.
Use any loose items you can find to protect the front of the store you've set up in. While most of the mall is safe, there are some shops that aren't, and you've got to prepare for the worst.

    Roll 2d4 until they match.

Step 3: MAKE IT DEFENDABLE.
With another survivor played by another player or one you NPC, check the strength of your defenses.

Both roll 1d10. The higher roll determines the outcome. If the barricades stay up, you get 1 bonus Arcade Token for completing the quest. Otherwise repeat Step 2 until your dice matches, then try Step 3 again to make sure it can withstand the "assault."

Step 3: MAKE IT LIVABLE.
There is an IKEA in the mall, and that means you get to raid it for furniture! ...Easier said than done, though.

Find the kind of furniture you want: Roll 1d4 till you get a 1.
Escape the labyrinth: Roll 2d6 till they match.
Find the boxed version you need to put together: Roll 1d20 till you get an even number.
Put the furniture together: Roll 1d20 till a 15 or higher.

First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.

Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.

Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! You need to meet this word count while doing the quest, so no going back to pad your quest to claim tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.

    500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens.
    600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens.
    700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens.
    800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.

Whistle While You Work: You can absolutely work on living quarters with someone else, even if you don't intend to stay with them. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but it does mean you get good company!

"Dibs on the Glitter Shack!" Lissa hollered back towards the vague direction of the Winchester, an extra skip in her step as she half-raced herself down towards the little craft boutique. Her 'bed' for the last week had been dragged through some of the initial glitter puddles, so why not embrace the fact that she was going to be the glitter queen for the next seven days? She could always say she was a disco ball for the purposes of Guy's new costume hierarchy, maybe it would score her a few brownie points. Either way, she'd gotten there first, the Glitter Store was hers, and anyone who had anything else to say on the matter was going to be meeting her in the ball pit for a little chat.

Shoving hard on the stiff security gates to wrench them a few inches open, Lissa wriggled her way through the space she'd made, descending into the depths of what could only be described as Glitter Hell.

It was perfect.

"Let's see what we got here..." she mused to herself, starting by up-righting the first toppled aisle shelf. There had to be a few homey touches in this place--the possibilities were endless.

Step 1 - Failure

"Well, nothing there," Lissa frowned, wading her way through a pile of discarded paint palettes. She reached the second shelf, and with a heave lifted it back to its upright position. "Let's see what you've got."

Step 1 - Failure

Lissa sighed--nothing under there but some loose paper and some broken cinnamon brooms. It seemed like those looters had done a better job than she'd initially thought. "Third time's the charm," she murmured, reaching under yet another shelf. This one felt heavier, she was sure of it.

Step One - Failure

Lissa was right in that the third shelf was heavy--heavy with more glitter jars, that is. The rough motion of upending the shelf rolled one from its haven down to the floor below, where it shattered in a shining rainbow explosion of craft goods. "Dammit," Lissa coughed, trying to shake the dust and glitter from her hair. "I trusted you, Glitter Shack, why you gotta do me so wrong?"

But Lissa was nothing if not persistent. There was another row of shelves in the back, if she could just manage to crawl over these ones...

Step One - Success

"Awwww yisssssss," Lissa purred, sliding down a toppled shelf to where the real goodies were. Enough fabric had been left behind in the initial looting for her to fashion herself something of a blanket fort, and the leftover stuffing of a collective of DIY pillow sets served well enough for a private nest hiding in the back corner of her new abode. Some leftover packing crates served well enough to hold the water bottle she'd managed to scrounge up for herself, and a loose sheet offered herself a makeshift barrier from the outside world. To make things a little more home-y, she went back to Glitter Ground Zero and grabbed a few handfuls, to consecrate her new home with the blessings the store offered.

"May you ride eternal, glittery and chrome," Lissa stated with false aplomb, and then with a chuckle and a wipe of her hands she turned away from her haven and set to work. With a crib this sweet, she was going to have to set up some defenses or she was going to end up losing rights to the blanket fort.

Step Two - Failure

Well, there wasn't much to be found in her current section, but honestly, what did she expect out of fabrics and fluff? With a calculated hum, she turned her sights back towards the front of the store. Maybe there were some leftover thumbtacks that could be used as caltrops, that'd show zombies for sure.

Step Two - Failure

"Nah, that's lame," Lissa said, inspecting the one small box of thumbtacks to be found. That wasn't going to dissuade normal people, much less shamblers. She would have to keep looking.

Step Two - Failure

"What about--nah," Lissa huffed, tossing her latest idea aside. No one was going to willingly impale themselves on plastic knitting needles. It wasn't going to happen. "Screw this," she grumbled to herself, "I'm taking a break in the blanket fort."

Step Two - Failure

After about an hour of sulking in the blanket fort, Lissa managed to heave herself up, doing her best to look around with a fresh set of eyes. "There's gotta be something that would work..."

Step Two - Success

Lissa's eyes wandered around the room when it hit her--she had dozens of empty shelves to work with. She set to work, tying up a decent barricade with twine and glitter glue and anything else she could find that might take two things and get them to stay with eachother. When she felt vaguely satisfied, she clambered up and over the strange construction, wandering off to find someone willing to help her test it.

Step Three - Failure

"I'm not sure what you were going for here..." the voice under the wizard hat petered off, pressing gingerly at one of the makeshift barricades. With only the slightest pressure, the structure wobbled and fell, a mess of glitter and tape and twine.

Lissa rolled her eyes and put a hand to her forehead. "So it's got a few design flaws, I get it. I'll make it work next time, I promise."

Step Two Reattempt - 4, 3 - Failure

It was back to square one as far as defenses went. Cursing Wizard-Breath the whole time under her breath, Lissa tore apart her makeshift wall, building it anew.
