It was with great reluctance that Cor Caroli dragged himself out of his house tonight. Glitnir meant well about not wanting him to withdraw and wallow in his misery, but what felt like the constant nagging to not comfort himself where he could was getting grating. He was making a token attempt at patrolling tonight largely to shut Glitnir up, and by and large than meant lazily lurching from bench to bench. He had found one somewhere near an apartment building and plopped down on it, listening to the noises of the night and wondering if he could just go home now and still tell Glitnir he patrolled.

He was about to get up and leave when a sickening prickle tingled at the edge of his senses. There was a Negaverse officer nearby. Not even a Lieutenant, a Captain. He should have started running now, lest he get his starseed fondled again, but he didn't. It felt like the energy to do so dropped out from under him. What point was there in running if he could still be sensed anyway? Instead, Cor approached the aura, periodically suppressing a shudder from a flashback of the hand in his chest. Maybe if he was lucky, he could negotiate for the Captain to patrol elsewhere, or at least to not follow him.

Ashanite was, as always, playing the act of a far less motivated officer than he actually was. It meant that although he was now far better at energy draining, it still took him hours to fulfill his quota, because he cherry-picked bits and pieces from multiple people rather than risk being spotted having just drained someone unconscious. It was hard to play "reluctant officer" with a dead-weight body in your arms.

He could feel a Senshi approaching, and he waited, still and curious.

This one, he realized when the man came into his line of sight, was familiar - and he had to carefully school his expression to keep from wrinkling his nose.

"Cor Caroli," he greeted. It was polite, and perhaps a bit distant - but Cor Caroli was all tangled up in that terrible future of his, and any reminder of that made him want to run as fast and as hard as he could in the other direction. In the present, he had been a casual hookup. There was no reason for overwrought warmth.

The second the greeting reached his ears, Cor Caroli froze. He knew that voice. Indeed, when he unfroze and came closer, his concerns were confirmed. The captain was Ploutonion. The cascade of blurry emotions left him stuck on how to respond. "Plouton?" Maybe he was a bit flushed, he wasn't sure. Cautiously, he crept closer still. "It's you, isn't it?" Somewhere in those spellbinding feelings, he found himself ogling Ashanite. Damn, why did that uniform have to be so revealing? It made him want to reach out and touch... just a bit. Once he realized what he was doing, he quickly brought his eye contact back up to Ashanite's face. "I... how are you? Are you okay? Okay as you can be, I mean." It was awkward and stumbling in a lovestruck schoolboy sort of way. The longer he looked, the more he just wanted to grab the Captain and take him home or somewhere, make everything right again, see if he could recapture those distant but potent feelings.

"Yes," Ashanite said. He crossed his arms, posture tight and closed off - all meant to send a message.

"I'm alive." He shrugged his shoulders. Ordinarily, Cor Caroli's blatant lovestruckness would have been an opening, an opportunity - the same way Mont Blonc's trusting insistence and Victoria's wide-eyed infatuation were. But not here. Ashanite had no desire to play to emotions that made him want to throw up - to exploit some kind of relationship that might or might not have existed in a future he had don e everything he could to avert. "Which is the most I can ask for, I suppose."

Under any other circumstances, Cor Caroli would probably have gotten the message Ashanite was sending. Instead, it just made him feel sad, like there was something he had to do to get him to open back up. He nodded at the Captain's words. "I guess so. But... I think you can ask for more than just being alive." There was a pause before he added, "Is there anything I can do for you? I mean, I can't bring you back or anything, but if there's anything I can do to make it easier for you, let me know." In his typical fashion, Cor Caroli's first idea was bringing a snack for them to share next time they met. It might not have been totally what he wanted (which was to take Ashanite home), but it was something, a little pick-me-up for them both.

Ashanite's eyes narrowed. "Cor Caroli, to be entirely frank, if I were going to ask anyone for help, you would not be it." Harsh, sharp words, but there were illusions here that needed to be shattered. Let Cor deal with whatever emotional fallout resulted from his puffing up of an imagined and assumed relationship between them.

Right then, Ashanite did not care.

"You were a blind idiot with whom I had a not particularly exciting one-night fling. Do not assume there was or ever could be more between us than that." Obviously, this was a line that needed to be drawn.

That look shook Cor Caroli on the inside. The words that followed stung him in deeply vulnerable places that he barely knew existed. A blind idiot? A not particularly exciting one-night fling? The attachments aside, Ezra had thought it was a good time, and it hurt to think that it wasn't even enjoyable for the other person. He opened his mouth to speak, but he was so stunned that nothing came out. "...I. I... but what about..." He shut his mouth and shook his head. No, even he knew he had no proof of the vision's veracity. Even if other people had similar visions, it was just that: a phantom. "I guess you're right," he mumbled. The beginnings of tears prickled at his eyes, but damned if he was going to cry in front of someone like this who clearly didn't care, or might even enjoy it. "Even if we all had dreams that were in the same place, I guess they were just dreams."

Cor Caroli swallowed nervously. He needed something to sever the connection for himself. "So... who am I talking to now? What's your name, Captain?" It might not have been the best defense mechanism, but he was going to have to sever the connection between the Ploutonion that appeared in his dreams and the Captain that really existed.

"What about the dreams?" Ashanite asked, because it was obvious that was where Cor Caroli was going. "Dreams. Nightmares. Nothing more." There was no future in which he was chained to an empty ungrateful Wonder, aglow but alone, broken and desperate. "The man you imagined me to be never existed, Cor Caroli. You're obsessed with a ghost."

He would never be that man.

"Ashanite." Let Cor Caroli call him that. He would accept his Knight name form Mont Blonc, from Methone, from those he was tied to by their bond as soldiers of Saturn. Not from some Senshi he barely knew outside of dreams.

"Ashanite," Cor Caroli repeated, trying to cement the name in his mind. "Mm-hm. Gotcha. Captain Ashanite." He looked around; he couldn't see any other potential pursuers, or sense any, for that matter. He had to keep his tone informal and light or he would probably lose his head on the spot (perhaps in more than one sense, depending on Ashanite's whims). "Guess that's all, Captain. I'll be leaving." With that, he turned on his heel and started walking away, getting faster and faster as he went, eventually breaking out into a run. He needed to exert himself, to flee, to escape the downfall of everything around him.
