Character Information (Concept 1 - Greek Gypsy) PLEASE NOTE: Information of gypsies are not incredibly wide-spread. I have been contemplating one as becoming an Islander since about Nov. 05, but at that time it was American gypsies. Now, however, I have turned my sights on a Greek gypsy...so, please bear with me. Some of the information may make you stop and think "Hmm... is that qualities of a German gypsy?" because, quite frankly, in my search, I found that articles specifically on Greek gypsies are rare... when talking about lifestyle, kinship, behaviors, etc. Mostly, Greek gypsies are discussed with their relationship to traditional Greek music, so, that will play a huge role in this character!Name: Thina Arlia-Pavlidis (Saint/Ya-ya's-name = Thina //Gypsy caste = Arlia // Family name = Pavlidis)Name-Day/Birthday: May 21 (Thina does not celebrate her birthday, instead, her name-day)Age: 46 Marital Status: Divorced (Orthodox allows a max of 3 marriages, why divorced will be explained later)Religion: Greek Orthodox Appearance: General--Height: 4'10” --Weight: 130 pounds --Skin Tone: darkish olivey - tan --Hair: Her hair is dark brown, to her hips, and starting to streak with gray. The long 'bangs' -she doesn't really have bangs, but that hair that would be- rest so they cover, at least as much as possible, her right eye. Usually, she leaves her hair down and loose, but when doing performances or in costumes, it is put together according to the protocol. --Eyes: Her eyes are brown, although her right eye is usually covered due to it being destroyed in an accident when she was a child (will explain later) and she tries to hide it as it is a stigma to her existence. --Build: Due to the delicious food of Greek, Thina is not that slim. She isn't fat either, but she is of a pleasant build. It is a good thing that Greek dancing doesn't require extreme amounts of nimble-ness! --Face: Thina has the face of, well, a Greek! It is a little rounder, in more of a heart shape. The cheekbones are more pronounced, but other than the her face is very smooth. She has the straight nose common in Ancient sculpture, and her lips are not very full, but they do have a kind of pouty expression to them. --General Impression: She isn't very beautiful, and in fact has more of an earthy feel. In a crowd, she would be looked over if it wasn't for the way her hair covers her eye, which almost gives a mysterious appeal. Clothes: (This is in a category of its own, because of the situations involved require different clothes.) Please note, all colors are DARK -dark blue/green, brown, burgundy... preferably black--Everyday, "around-the-house": Given her own choice, Krys wears clothes that she feels are comfortable. This is at times when Krys is around mostly other gypsies, and the occasional villager. This entails tank tops and shin-length skirts in the summer; ankle-length skirts and long-sleeve shirts in the fall and spring; and bundling up in long skirts, shirts, and sweatshirts in the winter. Let's not forget falling leggings that bunch at the ankles! --Everyday, "outside-the-house": When Krys is outside of her house, she tends to where more conservative clothes. These times are when the group goes to big cities, have the potential to be in the presence of tourists and larger groups of people. She usually wears a full-length skirt and a shirt. In the summer, she'd wear a tank-top, but it would not show any of her cleavage (not even the slit! you know what I mean ><). At other times, the shirt would be more 'stylish' short and long sleeve, also with layering, especially if color-coordinating is involved. --Religious Day: These times are 'dress-up times'. Krys would always wear a full-length dress (or dress-up skirt) of dark colors. The only skin that would show would be hands, lower arm, neck, collar-area, and face. Also, her hair would be in a kind of wrap or bun; however, she is able to style her hair so her right eye is still covered. --Performance: Ooo, these are the FUN outfits! Every region in Greek has their own traditional costumes. Because they travel and play at performances, Krys has many different kinds. The only times she would wear the full ensemble would be for performing a specific region while being somewhere else. For example, she would not perform a Thracian dance while in the Thrace (because the villagers would do their dance, they do not need the gypsies), but she might do a Thracian dance while in Epiros. PICTURES: [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] While a man with pom-pom shoes would have been fun, the men generally play the music, not necessarily dancePersonality: Outside of the family, Thina is veeeery reserved. She is more open in a group of all women, but is still not very talkative -on 'important' issues, at least. This isn't so much what she feels, but more so what she has been taught. Even though their group has come in contact with many tourists (including those crazy: "loud, rude Americans"), Thina always has a more traditional sense in gender roles. She isn't incredibly religious, but she still goes to Church, venerates icons, and so forth. Like many other Greeks, Thina is very superstitious. Not so much black cats and broken mirrors, she is aware of bad things happening for a reason, curses, and so forth. She loves to dance. She actual likes playing music as well, but that is a man's role and usually cannot be done in public. Recently, given her age and years of secretive practice, she's been allowed to play her lyre at certain events. If Thina is given any reason, she will dance. There doesn't even have to be any music. Her style of dancing also varies, depending on her mood and the music. Some of them may be considered seductive -but not slutty, think a kind of belly-dancing- while other blatantly boring -think the Greek-circle dance, wooo. Many of her opinions on things are also very traditional (like her dancing). Matters of religious and moral decisions should be "as the Church says". While abortion is accepted in the Orthodox faith, Thina is against it due to her not being able to have children. Sex is a means to placate your man, usually your husband, but if he's a boyfriend, okay. A meal is not complete until you have had bread. Smoking is a way of life -although Thina doesn't smoke herself. Drinking alcoholic beverages should be in moderation, what is really the point in getting drunk. Everything is on "Greek time"... okay, more HERE. Background-History: --Torn Greece: The military junta dictatorship was still in power when she came into the world as a screaming, crying baby. The country had just had three successive wars (WWI, WWII, and their Civil War then the junta...not to mention their War of Independence that ended just years before and a 500 year rule by the Turks), and it seemed that nothing else could possibly hurt the little country any worse. The gypsy clan had only recently settled in the area of Epirus, where they were to make neighbor and friend of the once-hostile-towards-them villagers. They weren't very happy about the arrangements, either. For, the government was now demanding them to have one living place -traveling around was no longer an option-, demanding their children go to school, their sons to enter a military they wanted no part of, and become good citizens of Greece. Instead of fighting it too much, the Arlia gypsies succumbed to their fate and held one thing for prestige: music. From all their traveling, they had kept alive the different musics of Greece. And now, they had their living place settled they hired themselves out to play and perform at events around Greece, keeping their tradition alive. Where and when, exactly, Thina was born is a mystery. Even her parents don't remember because didn't matter. Probably in a small village in Epirus around May-ish? They were too busy with their other children and the world to really take note. She was named Thina after her father's mother, a common practice. The surname of her group is Arlia, a traveling gypsy clan who are the professional musicians and performers of Greece (there are other clans). She still celebrates her "birthday" on her nameday of May 21... for that is the only day she recognizes anyways. When she was about six years old, Thina got into an accident. She was chasing one of her cousins around all the cars in the parking lot. She had jumped down from the bumper of one car, in an attempt to pounce on her cousin, but he heard her coming and moved out of the way in time. Thina landed on her feet, but the ground was covered with broken glass from an alcohol bottle. She slipped and fell face-first in the next car. The left side of her face essentially rubbed on it, and she would have just come out with a black eye if a rusted piece of metal wasn't poking out. Thina was lucky, though, for the accident could have killed her. Instead, she learned to live with only having one good eye and also how to essentially hide it to the best of her ability. Sometimes it is wrapped in a scarf, or under an eye-patch, etc, with her hair flopped over it. Growing up, Thina was exposed to about everything in Greece, despite her one-eye-ness. She definitely was just a regurgitated little girl. Of course, some things she did that were not "publicly acceptable". For example, women don't play instruments...generally they sing and dance. But, in the privacy of the 'home', it is fine. So, Thina pestered her father and brothers in private for them to teach her how to play instruments, and they eventually relented. She learned to play the lyre, flute, drum, and the clarinet... in all the glory of regional variation. Thina was taught everything she needed to know by the group. All her schooling, history, and so forth, were all "handed-down". Not everyone learned much English, though. Some knew other languages, but they tried to have at least one person know one of the common languages of the tourists. Thina knows basic English and French, with a little bit of German on the side. Even though it was illegal for women to get married before they are 18, Thina was "unofficially-officially" married by the time she was 14. Of course, the government always has a hard time keeping track of the gypsies, so it really didn't matter. Strangely, life went on. Thina travelled, performed, ate, had a merry time... but could never seem to get pregnant. Despite their best efforts, Thina and her husband, Kostas, went childless. When Thina was 21, Kostas divorced her and took a new wife who was already pregnant with his child. No one wanted to marry her, because as superstitious people they truly thought she was cursed. So, growing up the girl was able to live and adapt with her ruined eye... but as a woman, it was a sign of her barren womb. How Thina Got to the Island: Generally, the gypsies do not leave other gypsies. Sometimes, they may leave the clan with a few others, but this is a rare and short-lived occasion. Anyways, the owner of a boat-cruise over the pacific came to one of the clan's performances and wanted to hire them to work on one of his round trips from Europe to the States. The group leaders agreed (for a large sum of money) and decided to send some people. The ended up sending 3 people, 1 man and 2 women. Looking at the group, they all could have been termed "expendable". Thina, of course, was cursed and couldn't produce children to keep the clan's name alive. The last two were an old couple, again. They had actually volunteered. You couldn't have a respectable dance with just one woman, it was unheard of! Everything was going fine. They had a boat-ful of Europeans, splashed with a color of Americans. The gypsies would perform every night. Because of their affiliation and love of music, they knew more than just Greek music. They were able to play anything the cruise-customers wanted. When it came to their dancing, however, they all tended to stay out of the "Western" dancing which they considered inappropriate for themselves to get involved. Thina had lost track of how long they had been at sea, probably just a few days. But, the program for that night was traditional Greek music. She had gotten into one of her costumes, one of the more elaborate ones -and one of her favorites. They had done a few of the dances, creating a classical dance circle with some of the guests. The night was dying down, and Thina was taking a break, sipping her bottled water. A group of men had gotten themselves royally drunk, and much of the crew as well. They started yelling about the "good for nothing gypsies" and saying how they should rid themselves of such scum. It was about that time that one the drunken crew pointed out that their entertainers were in fact gypsies from Greece. Well, they couldn't let that slide. First, they taunted the three older gypsies who were still performing. Thina was trained to not do anything, so she just stayed in her chair, clutching the lyre that was currently not being played. The men felt that bugging three old gypsies who looked as if they were about to die anyways wouldn't be effecient enough. Their eyes set on Thina, sitting quietly in her chair. It was too late by the time others figured out what was going on. Thina fought as best she could, but one person against so many was doomed to fail. The other two gypsies were beaten when they tried to intervene, so the remaining guests just screamed for everything to settle down. Everything was in vain. The men had carried Thina outside and to the back of the boat. They threw her off; lyre, skirt, water bottle, and all. Lucky for her, Thina knew how to swim, although it was difficult with her hands full and she was trying to keep the lyre from being destroyed. One of the guests that were not involved ran and through over one of the yellow, inflatable life rafts. Thinas was able to get to it, but not the cruiser. She got to the inflated raft and flopped herself on, sodden skirts and everything.... ...eventually, she floated for awhile before the "coast guard" of the Island found her. Thina was starving, burned, and pretty much delirious, by the time they found her. If it wasn't for her bottled water, her chances of survival would have been worse. They took her to the Island, where they... well, you know the rest... Why this Method? I know that "castaway" isn't a preferable method, but the reason why I like this one is that it was an act of hate that caused it, not so much a storm. Why a Gypsy? As I mentioned before, I've been thinking about it a lot. When I came to Greece, and I found out about their gypsies, I was in love! Also, the costumes are just droolicious. Anyways, I think a Greek gypsy would be great to RP with. Gypsies are an interesting phenomenon all on their own, and even better than many people do not know they still exist and flourish. I want to mix in some of their aspects into the RP, especially the ideas of kin, religious, superstition, music... everything! There is a LOT that I didn't put up, like the actual building of a gypsy character, but I tried to incorporate it as much as I could in the development of Thina. Also, I am not done with my research and classes that are teaching me more and more about Greek gypsies. I am not thinking any of these thins will change, but if something comes up and my information contradicts it, I will change it. I have some time, though, as it may be a couple years before I can get a second character. Do you have Alternative methods to get to the Island? As a matter of fact, I do! If the being thrown overboard (not just falling or something) was so.... bleh, I do know some other ways to get her on. With the character development, Thina is not someone who is particularly tied to everything. Getting her to (within reason) do anything would not be difficult... and no one would miss her (technically). If Thina were to disappear, there were would no searches, no missing ads... not even a mention to the police. Anyways, another method that I have considered is very similar. The same group of gypsies were taken to, say America (the only reason I pick that is a- English speaking; b- has many Greek immigrants; and c- has a population interested in Greek music that a gypsy would know) where they performed. But, at one of the performances, Thina was approached by some person. This person would have no direct ties to Feral Labs, except for as a kind of informant. He would convince Thina that there is a place (da-da, the Island) where she could find "work". She would be reluctant at first, not wanting to leave the others, but as it was only to be "a week long", the woman would finally agree. Of course, once she got there, she wouldn't be allowed to leave...

Character Information (Concept 2 - Fallen Pilot) Character Name: Krys Ricci Krys's Appearance (Human): Age- 28 Height- 4'11" Weight- 140 pounds (The short woman is a little on the bigger side, but is by no means all fat. Most of her weight is in muscle, but there is still some excess poundage that is the result of her comfortable lifestyle.) Hair- Long, brown; green streaks (Krys also has long brown hair that she usually keeps pulled back and out of the way. Green streaks are also dyed in for a little bit of flavor -added after she lost her flying job -and career- because it is not professional for a pilot to have streaks-. Attraction- Fairly Ugly? (The woman could not be described as beautiful or ugly; she is just quite plain.) Eye(s)- Left eye = gold; Right eye = destroyed (Perhaps the most noticeable trait about Krys is her right eye. When she doesn't have it covered (usually in the privacy of her home), it is quite gruesome. A scar runs from her right cheekbone, up through her eye, and ending in about the center of her forehead. The eye itself is almost completely useless. It was literally sliced open and then healed, but is still looks quite grotesque and uncomfortable. Krys understands how disturbing her eye looks to others, so she always keeps her eyepatch on when anywhere but her private living quarters -whether that be her apartment, a hotel, etc-.). Kry's Personality: Krys could be seen as currently going through a mid-life crisis. That is better explained in her background. When not depressing over the stuff that recently happened in her life, Krys is actually pretty cheerful. She is usually the one cracking jokes and adding the sarcastic remarks in a conversation. The woman is also incredibly antsy. It could be said that she has a slight case of ADD. Krys simply cannot be bored-- at all. If there is nothing to do, she will go out and find something to do; sometimes this includes making a mess just to clean it up. The world is her playground and everything is her toy. She also likes to play games, and some of these "games" are in fact very serious. When it comes to flying, Krys reverts back to her childish ways. No matter what the situation, when she is in the air, that is all she can think about. If she isn't the person actually flying, Krys will look around and watch every detail. This can usually be helped by letting her listen to the radio and hearing ATC, other pilots, and occasionally the messages on instrument frequencies (weather, airport approach, etc). Krys's Background: ...Childhood... Birth-18 years Krys had a pretty uneventful childhood. By "uneventful", I mean if asked, she wouldn't be able to pick out a time where she felt anything important happened. Of course, everything was important, but she mostly took it for granted, as many people do. Growing up in a middle-class United States family, in Nebraska, Krys just calmly went through her day. The area was not dangerous; while drugs were experimented with, drug dealers were a rare site; and so forth. Her parents were always very encouraging. Krys never heard the words "You cannot", or "that isn't possible", or even "why do you want to do that?". She never had to think twice about an action. Sure, she weighed the consequences, but her motives were never questioned. Elementary school and high school went by. Krys wasn't exceptional, but she was very smart. Usually seen with a book, however, she was many times the root of jokes. It was when she was younger when she hit her growth spurt, so she towered over her classmates for awhile. When she was about 11, however, people started passing her in height, where as she didn't even break the 5-0. It was also about this time that Krys's personality started to switch... literally. She was a quiet, detached little girl that grew into a loud, social woman. At the age of 15, she found a boy... and they dated until they left for college. Krys did some experimenting with things... drugs (when she could), smoking (hated it), *cough* sex... but never alcohol (she didn't want it to hurt her dream career). It never occurred to her than any of the others could also destroy her career... although she threatened her boyfriend many times that if he got her pregnany, she skin him and roast him alive. When she was 16, Krys started flying and working at the local airport to pay for as much as she could (parents picked up the rest of the fees). She could only do a little bit, for she was not legal for a certificate. On her 18th birthday, however, Krys did her final FAA checkride and went out to celebrate her victory that night. That fall, she left for college. Flight Certificates at the end of this time: Private :: Glider Endorsements/Ratings: Instrument :: Complex :: Tailwheel :: High Performance :: Tow...College/University... 18-22 years Major: Aeronautical Engineering Minor: Classical Studies Krys lived her entire 4 years of college in the dorms, even though she hated the food (who wouldn't?). It was more convenient. She didn't have the time to get her own place, though, and she found someone she liked who was willing to room with her the whole time (lucky b***h). Krys had a very rigorous schedule. A difficult major, with a minor, and with a job and working on getting more certificates; Krys didn't have much time for herself. She had a few amazing friends, who she always kept in touch with, but longer relationships. She was known for being "loose", though... what can I say: she liked sex... ^^; You see, Krys wanted to be a pilot. She didn't know where she was going to be, and she was too passionate about her choice to settle down with a man. Every free moment was spent on flights. If she didn't have the money, her parents were always there to send money (they had secretly set funds aside). Krys was still under her parents wings. She knew that, but didn't care. After college, she could concentrate on speading her own wings and flying. More Flight Certificates at the end of this time: Commercial :: Flight Instructor Endorsements/Ratings: Multi-Engine..."On her Own"... 22 years - Present Final Cert. at age 23: ATPKrys graduated with her degrees. Unfortunately for her, she didn't have the knowledge or the hours to get a decent job. Luckily for her, however, she had connections. For a year, Krys lived with her parents, working at the airport she had originally learned to fly. Slowly, she was able to work up the hours. Her main contact was able to help her in the way of more Multi-engine and Jet hours. Finally, Krys earned all the certificates she needed (had to wait for that last one). Her connection helped her out again and got her a job with a private charter business (it's all about connections). Krys loved her job, she loved her co-workers; and even though she never found "the one", she loved her life and all aspects. The Accident: Krys was driving her motorcycle one afternoon when a drunk driver hit the side of her bike. While she didn't have any major injuries, thanks to her helmet and thick clothing, Krys had one major problem after recovery: a broken branch from a tree had found a way to pierce through her helmet shield. Usually, this would be impossible, but she managed to hit it at just the right angle and at just the right speed. The branch essentially took out her right eye. She was blind except for the vague, irritating outlines that she saw in the light. No pilot, though, can fly with only one functional eye. Oh, but her company was sympathetic. They weren't going to throw one of their pilots on her butt in the street. They offered her a job (how sweet). After her 2 months of recovery, Krys had a new job: she was now a janitor. She should have been insulted, but for some reason, she wasn't; Krys had a plan that would hopefully make her rich. Ideally, How Does Krys get to the Island? (Has been okay-ed by Chibi Hige) Ever since her college years, Krys worked on her newest creation: a motorized glider-seaplane hybrid. It just so happened, about a year after her accident, Krys finished. It took her long because she had no real determination before. Now, however, she did! It was time for her hybrid's debut. Of course, she couldn't fly it (her medical was invalid and required); so, her friend was going to test it publicly on the oceanic coast of -location hidden-. The night before, Krys got really drunk (this was a reoccuring problem... now that she didn't have to worry about alcohol ruining her record -ironic-). It's interesting when Krys gets so drunk... she is very capable. She managed to bribe some shippers to sneak her and her packed hybrid out to the ocean to avoid the ATIZ zone. Once there, she fired up the small engine and was off. It was still early morning, so the landbreeze helped her immensely to get further and with such. Of course, her flying was off...and it wasn't getting better over time as she continued drinking. Finally... she saw land. Krys wasn't expecting an Island on her route, but decided it would an interesting stop...she could soak up some sun! She didn't notice that her limited gas was practically running on fumes, so she really lucked out! Crash landing in the water was not pretty, but Krys had designed her hybrid for such events. Floating near shore, the woman snuck out of her hybrid and swam to shore, dragging her creation with her (hey! her booze were in there!). She left it on shore while she went exploring.... And that was when she was discovered! ((Note: During this time, Krys will only be speaking Spanish. She thinks she is speaking English, but the alcohol was just too strong. My translator for such things is a friend of mine from Neopets xaldanax ))Random Information...? Ethnicity: Italian (father); Peruvian (mother) Languages: English; Spanish; Italian Occupation: Ex-pilot; Janitor; Inventor

The Sea Slug Serum (Sea Slug Forum) Species: Glaucus atlanticus Common Name: Blue Glaucus, Blue Sea Slug, Man-o-War (Sea) Slug Order: NUDIBRANCHIA Suborder: AEOLIDINA Family: Glaucidae
Glaucus atlanticus and its close relative, Glaucilla marginata, live in close association with what Sir Alistair Hardy described many years ago as "The Blue Fleet" - the siphonophores such as Physalia, Velella, Porpita and the other associated animals including the "Violet snails" of the genus Janthina. All these animals float on the surface of the ocean being carried by the currents and the winds. Most of us are only aware of their existence when days of onshore winds blow great fleets of them on to the beaches, causing pain and angst for swimmers.
Both species spend their life floating upside down in the water, partially bouyed by a gas bubble in their stomachs.
The two nudibranchs feed almost exclusively on Physalia, and as Tom Thompson and Isobel Bennett reported some years ago, it appears that they are able to select the most venomous of Physalia's stinging nematocysts for their own use. Like most aeolids, they store the nematocysts in special sacs (cnidosacs) at the tip of their cerata .
There are a number of reports in Australia of kids engaged in "Bluebottle" fights - where they throw stranded Physalia at each other - being badly stung by inadvertently playing with Glaucus and Glaucilla, both of which, by concentrating the most venomous of Physalia's nematocysts, are much more deadly.
Another interesting feature of the two species is their colouration. They both exhibit a textbook example of colour countershading. Their foot and undersides of the cerata, (which because they float upside down is effectively their dorsal surface), is blue or blue and white which helps to camouflage them from predation (sea birds) from above. Their true dorsal surface, which faces down in the water, is silvery grey to effectively camouflage them from fish looking up from below.(Wikipedia) Glaucus atlanticus, also known as the blue sea slug, is a nudibranch of the suborder Aeolidina. Its distribution is throughout throughout the world's oceans in temperate and tropical waters. G. atlanticus preys on the Portuguese Man o' War (Physalia physalis), Velella velella, the Blue Button (Porpita porpita), and the violet snail (Janthina janthina).
With the aid of a gas-filled sac that is located in its stomach, G. atlanticus is able to stay afloat at the surface. Due to the location of the gas sac the blue sea slug actually floats upside down. The dorsal surface, actually the foot and underside, is either a blue or blue-white coloration. The true dorsal surface is completely silver-grey. This coloration helps protect G. atlanticus from predators from both below and above.
G. atlanticus is able to feed on P. physalis due to its immunity to the venomous nematocysts. The blue sea slug will consume the entire organism. After consumption it will select the most venomous nematocysts and use them as a defense.(Symptoms) Helpful Field Guide"A sting from one of these nudibranchs is not unlike that of the coelenterate itself." (see below) A large number of cnidarians can produce painful and dangerous stings to humans. The characteristic stinging cells or nematocysts consist of a minute capsule within which is a coiled, barbed tube. When activated, this barbed tube penetrates into the victim and acts as the conduit for the injection of venom. Millions of nematocysts maybe present on the body of a single cnidarian. Some jellyfish can be extremely dangerous and can kill a person in only a few minutes or less. The sea wasp (Chironex fleckeri) is considered to be among the most dangerous of marine animals. Similarly, the stings of Man-O-War (Physalia physalia) can produce extremely painful and debilitating stings. Symptoms associated with stinging are highly variable and can range from mild irritation and rashes to severe pain, systemic shock, and death. Other symptoms are known to include headache, abdominal pain, general discomfort and muscle cramps, chills, fever, nervousness and hysteria, diarrhea, vomiting, and cyanosis. Lesions and welts are common at the location of the sting. Although most lesins dissipate within a few hours, the skin may remain reddened for a day or so. POSSIBLE 100% PLEASE NOTE: NONE of this is 100% set in stone. The actual stuff will be the artist's discretion and I will RP the changes and such myself This is kind an example of what Krys would look like at 100%. It is seen as if she was hanging from a hook by her collar, to give an idea of the feet. What you are seeing: Some things were added on Krys-As you might be able to tell, Krys does not look human anymore... (1) She has acquired the strange skin of the Sea Slug, patterning and all. (2) Her right hand is twisted to show the top of her forearm and the back of her hand, while her left hand is twisted to show the bottom of her forehand and the palm-face of her hand. The cerata are actually coming from her knuckles. I did this for a few reason: (1) it allows for Krys to still have use of her hands -she still has a skeleton not an amoebic sea slug- and (2) that seemed most reasonable to me. (3) The second set of cerata, 2nd largest as well, are extending from her knees. I honestly don't know why, but when looking at the sea slug, it seemed that is where it would be. (4) The last set are at her feet, in the same process that happened to her hands. (5) Krys also has a kute little tail! (6) Those little antenae, as well, appeared. She has one set at the top of her head and another off her bottom lip. Krys is also missing a few things-(1) She no longer has a nose...eeps! (2) Krys has no ears...which might be kind of nice sometimes? (3) -I think the worst for poor Krys- She has no boobies! The sea slug has a flat chest, so Krys will too. ...and some things changed-(1) Krys's lips are pretty wide now, as her mouth has 'grown'. (2) Poor thing lost one eye, and now she has lost them both. Krys's left eye is now entirely blind. (3) OMFG! HER HAIR! Yes, her hair lost absolutely all pigmet. Krys also cut it off because it was getting in the way. She left one braid in as a reminder of how long it once was. (4) Krys's teeth will fuse together and be all slimy-like. This is because, well, Altanticus do not have teeth...but for the function of talking, Krys will, although it will not be prettty Krys TeethWhat you do not see, but also changed:Sight- Well, obviously Krys cannot use her eyes to see anymore. She uses other things. It is suggested, and I'm going to go with it, that sea slugs use heat sensors and water currents to move around. Krys will be kind of the same. Her little antenae things act as heat sensoring devices. Her now incredibly sensitive skin allows her to feel air currents on land, and water currents when, well, in the water. Feeding- Just going with the sea slug's appetite, Krys isn't hungry very often, but when she is.... she EATS. Literally coming out bloated, Krys will eat any sea food, along with -after lots of begging?- captured Portuguese Men-o-War to "recharge" her cnidosacs. Behavior- Working off the limited information I have, Krys will retain her socialness. She will be a little bit calmer than usual, however, and when made mad.... the perp better watch out... for she can "zap" them! Touchy-ness, though will disappear. With her incredibly sensitive skin, even a soft hug will be painful. Movement- Water is a must! Krys will only be able to be out of the water for 2 hours before she has to turn for soakage!

WTF Combo Sea Slug + Bunny + Mantis Shrimp = WTF? Sea Slug Blue Sea Slug Well, the information on the Blue Sea Slug is above, so I will save some room and just tell you to look there! blaugh No drooling though... IT'S MINE! domokun Bunny Lop Rabbit Species: Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus Breed: Lop Rabbit INTRODUCTION The rabbits is now the third most popular mammalian pet in the UK, and increasing numbers are kept as house pets and become part of the family. There is a corresponding increase in the expectations of rabbit owners for high quality veterinary care of this species. Unfortunately there is little, if any, tuition in this area in the veterinary undergraduate curriculum, and it is therefore the aim of this short course to provide a broad introduction to the biology, husbandry, common clinical conditions and veterinary management of rabbits.
The domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) originated from the European wild rabbit. There are many other species of rabbit, and these, along with cottontails, pikas and hares make up the Order Lagomorpha. Man?s relationship with the European or ?true? rabbit was first recorded by the Phoenicians over 1,000 years BC, when they termed the Iberian peninsula ?i-shephan-im? (literally, ?the land of the rabbit?), which the Romans converted to the Latin form, Hispania, and hence the modern word Spain. The wild rabbit has long been hunted, but it is unclear exactly when domestication first took place. The Romans kept rabbits in walled enclosures (?leporaria?) and there is evidence that they brought them to Britain, but they did not survive at this time. In Europe, and especially France, the domestication process was well under way by the fifth century, and in the twelfth century the Normans brought them to Britain, where they became established and remain as both a domestic and wild animal. Man also transported the rabbit throughout the world, often with devastating effect; absence of predators in Australia and New Zealand has led them to become a pest. However, the rabbit has not become established in the wild in North America.
With domestication came the development of different breeds and varieties (colours). All domestic rabbits are the same species as the wild European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In 1995, 61 breeds and 531 varieties of rabbit where recognised in the United Kingdom, and more are constantly evolving by selective breeding and mutation. Many pet rabbits are cross-breeds.
Over the centuries, man has used the rabbit for food, sport, clothing, as a scientific model and a hobby (the rabbit ?fancy?). The keeping of rabbits as pets developed in Victorian times, and their popularity has grown enormously, to the current situation where rabbits are the third most popular mammalian pet in the UK. Although traditionally kept as and thought of as a children?s pet, increasing numbers are kept by adults and as house pets, becoming as much a part of the family as the more traditional cat or dog.
RABBIT ANATOMY AND BIOLOGY Rabbits are social, burrowing herbivores that are natural prey for a large number of carnivores. As a prey species they have evolved to be constantly vigilant, lightweight and fast-moving, with a highly efficient digestive system that enables them to spend the minimum time possible above ground and in danger of capture. For the same reason of not attracting predator attention, rabbit behaviour is not florid and overt and relies heavily on scent.
Life expectancy of the rabbit is 5-8 years, but some individuals live to 10 years or more.
Musculoskeletal system. The rabbit skeleton is light, making up only 7-8% of bodyweight. The front limbs are short and fine, in contrast to the long and powerful hind limbs. The plantar surface of the hind limb from the tarsus distally is in contact with the ground at rest. The spine is naturally curved. Body conformation varies greatly depending on the breed, from 1kg to 10kg, and from the squat or "cobby" shape of the dwarf breeds to the lithe and lean ("racy") Belgian Hare. Skull morphology can lead to disease, especially dental problems, in some breeds. For example some dwarf breeds have a mandibular prognathism which causes incisor malocclusion, and breeds with a foreshortened skull seem predisposed to nasolacrimal duct and dental problems.
Great care must be taken when handling rabbits. Osteoperosis is often present due to lack of exercise and low calcium intake, and a kick from the powerful hind legs can result in lumbar vertebral fractures (usually L6/L7).
The forelimb has five digits and the hind limb four.
The vertebral formula of the rabbit is C7T12L7S4C16. Thirteen thoracic vertebrae are seen in some animals.
Rabbit muscle is light pink in colour.
Dentition and oral cavity. The upper lip of the rabbit is cleft. The dental formula is 2/1 0/0 3/2 3/3. The incisors are used for grazing, and food is then passed to the back of the mouth for grinding. Incisors have enamel layer only on the anterior surface, which wears more slowly than the posterior surface, thereby maintaining a chisel shape for cutting herbage. The vestigial second pair of upper incisors are located directly behind the first pair and are known as "peg teeth". All teeth are open rooted, long-crowned and grow continuously. The cheek teeth are wider apart on the maxilla than on the mandible, and the lower teeth grow faster than the upper.
The oral commissure is small, and the oral cavity long and curved. Cheek folds across the diastema make visualisation of the cheek teeth difficult in the conscious animal. The tongue is large and has a mobile rostral portion and a relatively fixed thicker caudal portion (torus).
There are four pairs of salivary glands: parotid, submaxillary, sublingual and zygomatic.
Skin Female rabbits possess a large fold of skin under the chin known as the dewlap, from which they pull hair to line the nest before kindling. The toes and metatarsal areas are completely covered with hair, and there are no footpads. Scent glands are located on the underside of the chin, either side of the perineum (inguinal glands) and at the a**s (a**l glands). The inguinal glands are large and pouch-like and often contain a yellow/brown oily deposit.
Hair coat depends on breed. The normal coat consists of a short soft undercoat protected by longer guard hairs. The only hairless areas are the tip of the nose, part of the scrotum and the inguinal folds. In the Rex breed the guard hairs are shortened so do not protrude above the level of the undercoat. Satin breeds have an altered hair fibre structure that gives the coat a characteristic sheen. Angora rabbits have very long undercoat and guard hairs that are harvested for spinning into wool, and needs regular grooming to prevent matting.
The guard hairs are the first to emerge in new-born kits, followed by the undercoat. By a few days this soft baby coat is well-developed, and it persists until about five or six weeks of age. An intermediate or pre-adult coat then replaces this, followed by the adult coat by about six to eight months of age. Thereafter most rabbits moult approximately twice a year, (spring and autumn) but this can vary. Moulting starts at the head and proceeds caudally. Pregnant or pseudo-pregnant does undergo a loosening of the hairs on the belly, thighs and chest, which are then easily plucked to line the nest and expose nipples.
Tactile vibrissae are present on the muzzle, which are used to help locate food and when underground.
Does possess four to five pairs of nipples on the ventrum. Nipples are absent in the male.
Eyes and ears. The large eyes are located laterally (prey species) and rabbits have a blind spot in the area beneath the mouth, so food is detected by the sensitive lips and vibrissae. The lens is large and almost spherical, and the ciliary body is poorly developed, so accommodation is limited. The retina is merangiotic, with the optic disc lying above the midline of the eye and retinal vessels spreading horizontally out from it. The optic disc has a natural depression or cup. There is no tapetum lucidum.
A third eyelid is present and the Harderian gland is located just behind it. This gland has two lobes, the upper being white and the lower larger and pink in colour. The gland is larger in males, especially during the breeding season.
The nasolacrimal duct has a single lacrimal punctum in the medial aspect of the lower eyelid. From here there is a short (approx 2 mm) canaliculus coursing medially and ventrally into a funnel-shaped lacrimal sac, supported medially by the lacrimal bone. The duct then enters the maxilla through a semicircular foramen in the lacrimal bone. The duct has two sharp bends as it courses towards the nose, proximally in the maxillary bone and at the base of the incisor teeth. The duct narrows at these points, and this, plus the fact that the epithelium of the duct is undulating, and the opening into the nasal meatus is very small, mean that the nasolacrimal duct is very prone to blockage in the rabbit.
The ears are highly vascular and are involved in heat regulation, containing with large arterio-venous shunts. Ear size varies between breed, and those that hang down are referred to as "lops".
Digestive tract. Rabbits are hind-gut fermenters, adapted to digest a low quality, high fibre diet consisting mainly of grass. However, unlike other hind-gut fermenters, for example the horse, the rabbit has a very rapid gut transit time and eliminates fibre from the digestive tract as soon as possible. This permits body size and weight to remain low, which is advantageous in a prey species. In the wild feeding takes place mainly in the early morning, evening and at night.
The gastrointestinal tract makes up 10-20% of body weight. The stomach is thin-walled, and poorly distensible with a well-developed cardia and pylorus. Vomiting is not possible in the rabbit. Food and caecal pellets are always present in the stomach. The duodenum and jejunum are narrow, and at the end of the ileum there is the sacculus rotundus, rich in lymphoid follicles, and also known as the ampulla ilei or ileocaecal tonsil. The caecum is very large, thin-walled and coiled, and has many sacculations (or haustrae) . It terminates in the vermiform appendix, which is also rich in lymphatic tissue. The caecum lies on the right side of the abdomen. Caecal contents are normally semifluid. The colon is sacculated and banded. Colonic contractions separate fibrous from non-fibrous particles, and fibre moves rapidly through for excretion as hard faecal pellets. Antiperistaltic waves move fluid and non-fibrous particles back into the caecum for fermentation. Three to eight hours after eating, and thus mainly at night, soft, mucus-covered caecal pellets are expelled and eaten directly from the a**s (a process known as caecotrophy, coprophagy, refection, or pseudorumination). Arrival of the caecotrophs at the a**s triggers a reflex licking of the a**s and ingestion of the caecotrophs, which are swallowed whole and not chewed. A muscular band of richly innervated tissue with a thickened mucosa, the fusis coli, lies at the end of the transverse colon and acts to regulate colonic contractions and controls production of the two types of pellets.
The most prevalent caecal bacteria are of the anaerobic gram-negative genus Bacteroides, Proprionobacteria and Butyrivibrio bacteria. Gram negative ovals, fusiform rods, large ciliated protozoa (Isotrichia) and yeasts (Cyniclomyces guttulatus) are also present. Coliforms are not present in normal animals.
The mucus covering protects the caecal pellet bacteria from the low pH of the stomach. Caecotrophs remain in the stomach for up to six hours with continued bacterial synthesis, and eventually the mucus layer dissolves and the bacteria are killed. This process of caecotrophy allows absorption of nutrients and bacterial fermentation products (amino acids, volatile fatty acids and vitamins B and K), and the redigestion of previously undigested food. A food item can thus pass twice through the digestive tract in 24 hours.
The pancreas is diffuse and located in a pocket formed by the transverse colon, stomach and duodenum.. A gall bladder is present, and rabbits secrete mainly biliverdin in the bile rather than bilirubin. The pancreatic duct and the bile duct are separate.
The liver has four lobes.
Spleen The spleen is flat and elongated and lies on the dorsolateral surface of the greater curvature of the stomach.
Respiratory system Rabbits are nose-breathers (mouth breathing is a very poor prognostic sign). The nose moves up and down in a normal rabbit ("twitching") 20-120 times a minute, but this will stop when the rabbit is very relaxed or anaesthetised. The glottis is small and visually obscured by the back of the tongue. Reflex laryngospasm is common in the rabbit, which can complicate endotracheal intubation. The thoracic cavity is small, and breathing is mainly diaphragmatic. The lungs have three lobes, and the cranial lung lobes are small (left smaller than right). Large amounts of intrathoracic fat are often present. The thymus remains large in the adult rabbit and lies ventral to the heart, extending in to the thoracic inlet.
Cardiovascular system The heart is relatively small and lies cranially in the thoracic cavity. The right atrioventricular valve has only two cusps. The rabbit aorta has neurogenic rhythmic contractions.
Urinary system Rabbit kidneys are unipapillate. Urine is the major route of excretion for calcium. Serum calcium levels in rabbits are not maintained within a narrow range, but are dependent largely on dietary intake, with excess excreted via the kidney. Rabbit urine is often thick and creamy due to the presence of calcium carbonate crystals. It can also vary in colour from pale creamy yellow through to dark red (often mistaken for haematuria by owners), due to the presence of porphyrin pigments thought to be derived from the diet.
Reproductive system Does have no uterine body, two separate uterine horns and two cervices opening into the v****a. The v****a is large and flaccid. The mesometrium is a major site of fat deposition.
The placenta is haemochorial. Bucks have two hairless scrotal sacs either side and cranial to the p***s. There is no os p***s. The inguinal canals remain open throughout life.
DIET In the wild rabbits are essentially grazers, although they will forage on low-level leaves and shoots. The composition of grass is approximately 20-25% crude fibre, 15% crude protein and 2-3% fat. Commercial rabbit diets are often too low in fibre and too high in protein, fat and energy. Indigestible fibre (lignocellulose) stimulates gastrointestinal motility and has a protective effect against enteritis. Diets low in fibre and high in available carbohydrate cause caecocolic hypomotility, prolonged retention of digesta, increased volatile fatty acid production and adverse alterations in pH and microflora. This leads to diarrhoea and the "mucoid enteropathy" syndrome, especially around the time of weaning. The energy requirements of a rabbit can be met very rapidly on a concentrate diet, as compared to the situation in the wild, where the majority of the time budget is spent feeding. This can lead to dental disease due to lack of wear, obesity, and boredom-associated problems such as stereotypic behaviour and aggression. In addition, many rabbits are selective eaters and leave the grass-pellet component of a commercial mix, favouring the grains and pulses. These favoured items are low in calcium, and this can again lead to bone and dental disease (see Harcourt-Brown, and chapter on dentistry).
The best diet for a rabbit is grass and good quality grass hay (eg Timothy) with a small amount of a good quality high fibre (18 to 24%) commercial diet with protein levels around 15%). Alfalfa hay can be given, especially to growing animals, but care should be taken if alfalfa pellets are also fed as alfalfa is high in calcium and large amounts in the diet could predispose to urolithiasis. Fresh vegetables and small amounts of fruit can also be provided, but fruits high in simple sugars should be avoided. Commercial rabbit mixes, consisting of pulses, grains, grass pellets and biscuits, should not be fed ad lib, as this leads to selective feeding and obesity. A rabbit in good condition should have palpable ribs and vertebrae. Hay should always be available and can be fed from racks or nets to increase time spent feeding. The importance of hay in maintaining gastrointestinal and dental health cannot be overemphasised. Carrots or other root vegetables can be suspended from the cage roof to act as an edible toy and increase time spent eating.
Sudden changes in diet should be avoided, as should frosted or mouldy food, and lawnmower clippings. Rabbits enjoy sweet foods, but sugar-rich treats should not be fed, although they may be of use if tempting and anorexic animal to feed.
Kits show interest in solid food at about 2 weeks of age, and coprophagy starts at about 3 weeks. Stomach pH in non-weaned kits is 5.5-6.0, but this drops to 1.0 to 2.o after weaning. Coprophagy usually commences 3-8 hours after feeding.
Water intake is fairly high, at about 10% of body weight. Drinking bottles are easier to keep clean than water bowls, and avoid wetting of the dewlap, which can lead to a moist dermatitis.
BEHAVIOUR Rabbit behaviour is significantly different to that of cats and dogs due to their prey status. They have poor display of greeting behaviour, pain and fear. Scent is much more important than sight, and each animal has an individual scent profile. They can distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar humans, and between human gender. Socialisation of young rabbits is often overlooked. Kits emerge from the nest at about 2 weeks old and are weaned at 4-5 weeks old, but are generally not homed, and therefore handled to any great extent, until about 6-8 weeks of age.
Rabbits are highly social. In the wild they live in warrens usually containing 70 or more individuals, but this is broken down into small groups of 2-8. Foraging takes up most of the time in the wild, in the early morning and at night. Rabbits should not be kept singly unless the owner can devote a lot of time to them, but in neutered groups or pairs. They will spend a lot of time engaged in mutual grooming and lying together. Does are more territorial than bucks, and as they reach sexual maturity may become aggressive towards the owner and other animals. Does may also bite, dig and chew flooring and household items, spray urine and mount other rabbits. If outdoors on soil the doe may excavate deep tunnels.
As mentioned above, toys should be provided. However work on environmental enrichment for individually kept rabbits found hay to be far superior to other objects (grass cubes, gnawing sticks or a box) in preventing abnormal behaviour such as excessive fur licking, sham chewing and bar biting. In groups of young rabbits, providing hay significantly reduced the amount of dorsal alopecia and gastric hair found at slaughter. It also completely eliminated forehead alopecia ? the rabbits stopped plucking fur from their cagemates? forehead.
A well-socialised pet rabbit will beg for treats, "hum" and circle the owner, stand on its back legs and lick the owners? hands and arms. They are inquisitive and enjoy exploring. Picking up objects with the teeth and throwing them is also common, as is exploratory chewing (beware electrical cables).
A rabbit in pain will be immobile with a hunched posture, and may tooth-grind and show increased aggression. Thumping with the hind leg is an alarm call. Fear elicits either complete immobility, or a flight response, with often frantic attempts to escape, which can be accompanied by screaming.
Rabbits have not been bred for positive behaviour traits, and behavioural problems are not uncommon. Individual rabbits have distinct "personalities", from timid to aggressive. In general, the smaller breeds tend to be more highly strung. Aggression is generally learnt (ie the owner leaves the rabbit alone if it behaves aggressively). Other causes of aggression are territorial behaviour, boredom, pain, improper socialisation and negative association (ie a previous aversive or traumatic situation). Behavioural aggression can be successfully treated in many cases using similar techniques to those used in dogs.
Source: AquaVetMantis Shrimp Peacock Mantis Shrimp Species: Odontactylus scyllarus
Mantis shrimp are marine crustaceans belonging to the order Stomatopoda, one part of the class Malacostraca, the largest class of crustaceans. They are neither shrimps nor mantids, but receive their name purely from the physical resemblance to both the terrestrial praying mantis and the shrimp. They may grow to a length of 20?30 cm, although most species are considerably smaller, and their carapace covers only the rear part of the head and the first three segments of the thorax.
Called "sea locusts" by ancient Assyrians, and now sometimes referred to as "thumb splitters" by modern divers - because of the relative ease the creature has in mutilating small appendages - mantis shrimp sport powerful claws, formed like jackknives, that they use to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning or dismemberment. Some pet mantis shrimp have managed to break through their double-paned aquarium glass with a single strike from this weapon.
Ecology These aggressive and typically solitary sea creatures spend most of their time hiding in rock formations or burrowing intricate passageways in the sea-bed. They either wait for prey to chance upon them or, unlike most crustaceans, actually hunt, chase and kill living prey. They rarely exit their homes except to feed and relocate, and can be diurnal, nocturnal or crepuscular, depending on the species. Most species live in tropical and subtropical seas, although some live in temperate seas.
Classification and the claw Around 400 species of mantis shrimp have currently been described worldwide, which are commonly separated into two distinct groups determined by the manner of claws they possess:
spearers are armed with spiny appendages topped with barbed tips, used to stab and snag prey and some have a blunt, calcified club on the elbow smashers, on the other hand, possess a much more developed club and a more rudimentary spear (which is nevertheless quite sharp); the club is used to bludgeon and smash their meals apart. The inner aspect of the dactyl (the terminal portion of the appendage) can also possess a sharp edge, with which the animal can cut prey while it swims. Any aquarium store that has a resident mantis shrimp of this type can put on a blood-sport show with a feeder goldfish and a hungry shrimp. Both types strike by rapidly unfolding and swinging their raptorial claws at the prey, and are capable of inflicting serious damage on victims significantly greater in size than themselves. In smashers, these two weapons are employed with blinding quickness, with an acceleration of 10,400 g and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start. Because they strike so rapidly, they generate cavitation bubbles between the appendage and the striking surface. The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produce measurable forces on their prey in addition to the peak instantaneous forces of 1500 N that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface.
Smashers use this ability to attack snails, crabs, molluscs and rock oysters; their blunt clubs enabling them to crack the shells of their prey into pieces. Spearers, on the other hand, prefer the meat of softer animals, like fish, which their barbed claws can more easily slice and snag.
The Eyes The front of Lysiosquilla maculata, showing the stalked eyesMantis shrimp appear in a variety of colours, from rather dull browns to stunning neon. They are the only animals with hyperspectral colour vision. Their eyes - both mounted on mobile stalks and constantly moving about (apparently independently of one another) - are similarly variably coloured, and are considered to be the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. They permit both serial and parallel analysis of visual stimuli. The compound eye is made up from up to 10,000 separate elements and are of the apposition type. Each eye consists of two flattened hemispheres separated by six parallel rows of highly specialised ommatidia called the midband. This divides the eye into three regions: the dorsal and ventral hemispheres and the midband. This is a design which makes it possible for them to see objects with three different parts of the same eye, in other words; each individual eye possesses trinocular vision and depth perception. The upper and lower hemispheres are used primarily for recognition of forms and motion, not color vision, like the eyes of so many other crustaceans.
It is the six-rowed midband that is the really unique part of the three regions. Rows 1-4 are specialised for colour vision, from ultra-violet to infra-red. The optical elements in these rows have 8 different classes of visual pigments and the rhabdom is divided into 3 different pigmented layers (tiers), each adapted for different wavelengths. The three tiers in rows 2 and 3 are separated by colour filters (intrarhabdomal filters) that can be divided into four distinct classes, two classes in each row. It is organised like a sandwich; a tier, a colour filter of one class, a tier again, a colour filter of another class, and then a last tier. Rows 5-6 are segregated into different tiers too, have only one class of visual pigment (a ninth class), are specialised for polarisation vision and can see different planes of polarised light, perhaps are they even able to detect circularly polarised light. A tenth class of visual pigment is found in the dorsal and ventral hemispheres of the eye.
The midband only covers a small area on about 5-10? of the visual field at any given instant, but as mentioned, the eyes are mounted on stalks. This is also the case for other groups of crustaceans, but in mantis shrimps the movement of the stalked eye is unusually free, and can be driven in all possible axes, up to at least 70?, of movement by eight individual eyecup muscles divided into six functional groups. By using these muscles for scanning the surroundings with the midband, they can add information about forms, shapes and landscape which can not be detected by the upper and lower hemisphere of the eye. They can also track moving objects using large, rapid eye movements where the two eyes are moving independently. By combining different techniques, as those mentioned and saccadic movements, the midband can cover a very wide range of the visual field in front of the mantis shrimp.
Some species have at least sixteen different photo-receptor types who are divided into four classes (their spectral sensitivity is further tuned by colour filters in the retinas), twelve of them for colour analysis in the different wavelengths (including four which are sensitive to ultraviolet light) and four of them for analysing polarised light. By comparison, humans have only three visual pigments. The visual information leaving the retina seems to be processed into numerous parallel data streams leading into the central nervous system, greatly reducing the analytical requirements at higher levels.
Behaviour Mantis shrimp appear to be highly intelligent, are long-lived and exhibit complex behaviour, such as ritualised fighting. Scientists have discovered that some species use fluorescent patterns on their bodies for signaling with their own and maybe even other species, expanding their range of behavioural signals. They can learn and remember well, and are able to recognise individual neighbours with whom they frequently interact. They can recognise them by visual signs and even by individual smell. Many have developed a complex social behaviour to defend their space from rivals.
In a lifetime, they can have as many as 20 or 30 breeding episodes. Depending on the species, the eggs can be laid and kept in a burrow, or carried around under the female's tail until they hatch. Also depending on the species, male and female can come together only to mate or they can bond in monogamous long-term relationships.
In the monogamous species, the mantis shrimp remain with the same partner for up to 20 years. They share the same burrow, and there are reasons to suspect that these pairs can coordinate their activities. Both sexes are often taking care of the eggs (biparental care). In Pullosquilla and some species in Nannosquilla, the female will lay two clutches of eggs, one that the male tends and one that the female tends. In other species, the female will look after the eggs while the male hunts for both of them. Once the eggs hatch the offspring may spend up till three months as plankton.
Cookery In Japanese cuisine, the mantis shrimp is eaten as sashimi and as a sushi topping, and is called shako.
In Cantonese cuisine, the mantis shrimp is a popular dish known as "pissing shrimp" due to its tendency to urinate when cooked. Because of this, mantis shrimp are speared to induce them to evacuate their bowels prior to being introduced into the cookpot. After cooking, their flesh is closer to that of lobsters than that of shrimp, and like lobsters their shells are quite hard and require some pressure to crack.
Source: WikipediaPossible 100%? This is a very complicated thing to describe. Being a combination, it can take many many forms. I will try my best, however. Basic Skin/Color – the coloring of the slug, undoubtedly. Part of the back and 'tail' be the hard-shell of the shrimp that would extend along much of her back, sides, neck, and top portion of the back of her thighs. Everything else would be the slimy, soft-skin of the slug with very very short fur on her chest, nose along her cheeks to her ears, and legs where there are not any cerata. Head – I would like her to keep her hair, but cut short by the time she is at 100%. She would have the long rabbit ears with short fur and white except where she may have any markings which would be the dark blue of the slug. Her eyes would be on short stalks from the shrimp with the shrimp's unique eyes (although her left 'eye' would sill be useless for sight for they cannot regenerate). She would also have the little 'antennae' and 'mustache' of the slug. Her mouth would be strange and maybe a little scary. The slug's wide/gaping mouth extended a little from the rabbit's nose. At the corner of her mouth would be miniature versions of the shrimp's mandibles and the large 'peacock feather' the spreads from there. And, who can forget the rabbit whiskers!? PICTURE I forgot to add the whiskers sweatdrop Arms – Her arms would be a mix between the shrimp's upper legs and the rabbit's forearms. They would be stumpy with the shrimp's prickles that emerge longer than the short fur. The fanning slug's cerata would extend from Thina's 'elbows' that may or may not be distinguishable. Legs – For the most part, the rabbit would be the most prominent. With rabbit legs, Thina would have a hard time balancing on her toes. Her 'claws' would instead be like the shrimp's. The back of her legs would look like the shell with shrimp-pricklies running along the back to her rabbit-paws. This time, the shrimp's cerata would fan out medium-sized at the hips and smaller at the knees. PICTURE"Tail"- As mentioned, the shrimp would mostly dominate her back. The shell would extend a little where her 'tail bone' once was, though not much. With a few segments, there wouldn't be a whole lot there, just enough to have little tail-feelers and end in the tail's also segmented fan. Torso – Just a reminder, I imagine that her back would mostly be the hard shell of the shrimp. It would start at the back of her neck, down the length of her back and end at the top of her back thighs -with a short detour for a tail-. The side transition between shrimp and rabbit would belong to the slug -shiny, and slimy-. Her front, starting at her chin -or what's left of it- and then along her flat chest, over her now-slender stomach, and the the top of her thighs, would be of very short, with a mix of unfortunate slimy, fur that is white with some dark blue spots from the rabbit. FAQ's Why two concepts of the same character?Well, the Pilot came first, and while it has had many face-lifts since, ahh... Sept. 05, it was my original concept. The Gypsy was started around late-Nove. 05, early Dec., but was not really made until about Mar. 06. If you could pick one, which would it be? Why?Gypsy! All the way. While I love the pilot idea (I AM a pilot in real life), the gypsy would be more challenging to do. Plus, the lifestyle she had and her personality is so different than my own; I think it would be a blast. You already have a serum, why another?Well, Krys is my original concept, that I've been trying to get since I started hanging around IoDM in Aug. 05. I still really want her, and the sea slug. But right now, I am fully dedicated to Bobby... especially since I will never get the gold for an auction, so my only hope (realistically) would be if the rules changed about second characters in the future. Greek 101 Honestly, Greek 101 was the name of my Greek Language class while studying abroad in Greece. This only pertains to the Greek-Gypsy concept. Krys's native language is Greek, but she is fluent in English. But in the RP's, I don't want all of her greek to disappear... what's the fun in that? So, here are some words. Keep in mind, I will not be using the Greek alphabet here. They will be greek words, but spelled with the Latin-equivalent letters. My Spelling (Direct Greek Spelling if needed) :: Pronunciation :: MeaningOhe :: oxi :: o-he :: No Nai :: neh :: Yes Kuria :: keer-ya :: Miss Kurie :: keer-ee :: Mister Malaka :: ma-la-ka :: Buddy/a*****e/Jerk (literally, masturbator, but has many meaning... good, bad, affectionate)Kalimera (sas) :: ka-li-may-ra (sas) :: Good Morning (polite) Kalispera (sas) :: ka-li-spay-ra (sas) :: Good Afternoon (polite) Kalinigta (sas) :: ka-li-neeh-ta (sas) :: Good Night (polite) Ya sas :: geia sas :: ya sas :: Hello (polite) Ya sou :: geia sou :: ya soo :: Hello (informal) Signomi :: sugnomi :: seeg-no-mee :: Sorry/Excuse me Efharisto :: euxaristo :: ef-h-are-ee-stow :: Thank you Parakalo :: par-a-ka-low :: Please Oriste :: o-ree-stay :: Here you are/What do you want?/What (did you say)? Entaxi :: en-tak-si :: Okay

Alright... so I am keeping this quest but de-activating it... does that make sense? I am just not going to focus on it right now. I am going to focus on Bobby and my other pets/characters.
DOESN'T MEAN THIS QUEST MEANS NOTHING TO ME! It is still my dream and I hope to one day complete it heart

Thanks to Sabin's last two auctions... I now have ANOTHER quest... however, I am only going for ONE of these.
My first choice would be the WTF Combo, and second the Sea Slug (as always)... this is also, depending on HOW I might be able to get this second serum... so, we'll see if I can ever get it *sniff* While my chances of getting the Sea Slug is .1% my chances of the WTF Combo is .000001% sweatdrop
Now, you may be wondering why Sabin is to blame (MUAH! I still love you, though!)... well, here we go.
Auction 1: Mythical Creature Somewhere in the not-so-distant past, I thought how interesting it would be to have a sea slug-bunny. Well, I went to Hige, and asked him (though there was NO way I could win the auction). Well, jokingly, he called this 'mythical creature' a "Slunny"... so, I went to Sabin and asked if that was valid for the auction.... OF COURSE, my answer was a "NO!"
Auction 2: 3-Animal Combo Well, when this opened, I went to Sabin and said how I could finally 'get' my slunny. Of course, it was just for fun because 30K will NOT win an IoDM auction. The response back was, "What? You won't go for a third animal?" and after a few seconds of thought... I FOUND my third animal! This was one that I saw on the airplane 'movie' on my way to London for spring break. It was a mantis shrimp! These guys are very interesting, with 6-8optics in their eye rather than the normal 2 for a human. Plus, COLORFUL, BABY!!!
Yes... ELF likes color, so sue her! domokun
