“A dinner party!” cooed Vonafiel Medrol, delightedly, “I love parties!” It was the fourth time she had made that statement, and her brother responded with the same answer he had given her those three other times.

“Vona, I doubt it will be much of a party. The way she implied, it was just... dinner. Me. Her. You. Someone else. Maybe one other. Possibly a khehora.”

“I knoooow, but that just makes it so much more cozy than the ones in the city!” the tailor positively bounced with delight, “It's going to be so fun!”

“Vona, its more like a family dinner, with guests.” he explained, trying to calm her down.

“Sure, but we never had any guests, ever. Do you even realize how isolated we were?! Do you?!” she pulled him forward, and he allowed it without resistance. “Come onnn!”

Raemos gave up. “Well, if you're excited, very well.” he said stiffly.

“Aww, come on, you're excited too!” she teased, “Its not like you have many friends here!” that was true, and those he did have – from the guild – could not be seen in Serenia eating with him. Not in public, and their private residences were far away. Vona's friend had declined the invitation, which was for the best. They were pleasant enough and immensely kind to let him stay, but Raemos was sure he was imposing on them greatly.

“I might be.” he acceded.

“You are. Hey, is this the spot?!” Vona stopped at the crossroad, squinting into the gathering dusk. “Is she here? I don't see her...”

Shenra watched, amused as Avani scurried around in the kitchen. Shenra's smile was one of remembrance, one remembering her father moving about in the kitchen, sometimes with her mother, measuring with his eye the ingredients he put into the food. The love was always there as he poured each item into the recipe.

Avani had to restructure dinner a bit when Shenra showed up with some goodies for her. Shenra had mentally balked as Avani scowled at her with that look a mother gives an erring child. Shenra had been absentminded again and had gone without a "decent" meal for a few days. A snatched sandwich here and there, but nothing Avani would call a meal. Avani had grown up a farm child, watching her mother cook meals for her husband, a farmer, that were large, hearty, and economical. All put together, Shenra had to admit that country meals were just as good as city meals with a budget. It had to be the love that each person put into the cooking that gave it the best taste ever.

"Are you sure I can't help a bit." Shenra said as Honoka leaned into her leg as she scratched her head, "I feel, well, useless."

Avani stopped in her cooking and then looked at her friend thoughtful.

"You can go and meet the others." her friend said smiling, "They don't know the way to the farm."

So Avani gave Shenra the meeting place, and Shenra went with Honoka and Nix trailing behind her. She didn't mind, it gave Avani time to put finishing touches on the meal. Lighting a lantern, even if it was still light enough, the party set out to meet the other dinner guests.

As they approached the crossroads, Honoka and Nix suddenly ran ahead, probably smelling their guest before she could see them in the approaching dark.

As she approached, she saw a woman smiling as she watched a man bending over and scratching Honoka. Nix seemed to be enamored of the man as well. Shenra smiled, knowing that if those two deemed them safe, that all was well, and that they had to be Avani's dinner guests.

"Welcome! I am Shenra Silverleaf, a friend of Avani's." she bowed her head in welcome and smiled as she looked up again, "She asked I escort you back to her house as it is late and hard to find."

--------------------------------------

Honoka ran up to Rae skidding to a halt.

"Rae!" she said nuzzling his legs, "You came!"

Honoka was ecstatic, her tail swishing the dirt of the road up as it wagged in happiness. He actually came! Now she could hear the stories he had!

“Yes.” Raemos said affirmatively, bending down to receive the very excited young Khehora. “Hello, Honoka.” he said, petting her just over her eye ridges. “I did indeed come.”

Vona watched him, repressing laughter. “What's this?” she said, smirking, “You did make a friend, Rae!”

“Honoka, this is my... This is Vona. Vona, this is Honoka – I did tell you about her.” He stood up, just in time to notice Shenra. He was about to make a comment about how he didn't know her, something suitably dryly humorous, when she went ahead and introduced herself. He offered her a hand to shake. “Raemos Medrol, and this is Vona...”

“Oh, come on, Raerae.” she shook her head at him, “Honestly, why are you acting so ashamed? Are you ashamed about yourself, or about me? One of these days, Rae, you're going to have to stop.” She gave her brother a shove and bowed playfully to Shenra. “I'm Vona – short for Vonafiel Medrol. I'm his sister.” she shoved him again and laughed, “Though apparently he doesn't like to admit it!”

“It's nothing like that. I'm protecting you.”

“Well, they invited you, and I doubt you need protecting... I certainly don't!” she grinned at his resigned sigh. Well, the cat was out of the bag, so to speak. She moved closer to Shenra, beckoning to Rae. “And yes, thank you! I'm so glad we have an escort! I swear, he has a terrible sense of direction, don't you Rae?!”

“I do not.” he muttered. This was going to be... interesting. “Thank you, though. Shall we go?”

It was during the play between brother and sister, for there was no way they weren't with all the teasing and banter, that Shenra noticed that Reamos was different from his sister. He was an Oblivionite. There was no mistaking the dark skin and eyeless sockets in his face. Shenra's eyes widened for a moment, wondering where little Avani could have met him, and then she filled with amusement at the thought that she would be dining with an Oblivionite.

Shenra smiled and secretly laughed at the thought. Her sisters and brothers would be very jealous.

"Please follow me." Shenra said grinning, "I know the way."

Shenra lifted the lantern high and as she moved back along the darkening road with her two new companions. She looked back and smiled at Nix riding on top of Honoka's head as she trotted along side the young man Reamos. If Honoka trusted him, so would she

"I will admit, Ms. Vona," she said turning to the young lady at her side, "You and your brother remind me of my own siblings." Shenra felt a wave of longing for home at the thought of her family, but quickly pushed it aside. She smiled brightly at her companion, "It's refreshing to hear loving bickering over silly nonsense."

"I must also confess," Shenra said as they walked along, "that I was only invited to dinner because of Avani's concern for my eating habits." she felt a blush come across her cheeks, "I tend to forget meals when I am working on particularly interesting projects. My thoughts seem to get ahead of me, and I lose track of time."

-------------------------

Honoka wrapped herself around Rea's feet, then quickly unwrapped as Shenra began the trip back to the house. Honoka smiled and happily bounced alongside Rea. Rea seemed not to like this, but it was fun to her!

Well, what choice did Raemos have but to follow Shenra? After all, he did not know the way and he wasn't going to ask one of the innocent townsfolk and scare them out of their wits. Then again, Shenra hadn't been afraid? But she was a friend of Avani and, in the very brief time he had known the farmer, he could tell she was a strange person. It made sense that she would have equally strange friends.

“Really?” said Vona, “Well, that's good... I think?” she laughed, “Honestly, we're not always this silly.” she said conspirationally, “I just don't see him that often, so it kind of... builds up, you know?” she smirked, “Actually, I lied, I'm always a little silly...”

“Thank you for clearing that up.” Raemos chimed in drolly.

“... but he's normally so serious! It's really the distance, you know? Distance makes the heart grow fonder?”

“Vona...”

“Well, I mean, he's always fond of me, just not silly, you know?”

“Vona...”

“Anyway, how many siblings do you have? It's just me and Rae in our family, what about yours?”

Raemos sighed – it seeemed that, at least until they reached the house – Vona would be doing the bulk of the talking. And he, the listening. This was not unusual, nor was it unusual for him to be talkative... at the guild hall, amidst 'his' people. Which he was not: he was in rural Serenia, going with a young lady he'd never met before to the home of an Orderite who had adopted a khehora. This was uncharted territory.

“Really?” exclaimed Vona, and Raemos turned his full attention back to the conversation. “How do you forget something like that?” she laughed.

But Raemos thought he understood. “What sort of projects?” he asked, curiously.
