The battle may have been over, but the war was far from finished. Dris'rynne had heard that many of the Alkidike extremists hadn't gone into banishment like their sisters. It annoyed her that the trouble makers hadn't been dealt with, but doing anything herself would only cause another fight.
And she had one to deal with already.
Dris'rynne dodged an axe swing by ducking at the last second. She felt the blade zing past her cheek into one of the many stone walls that surrounded her. From her lowered positioned, the shifter swung out her leg and swept her attacker off his feet. He landed with a solid grunt on the ground before his 'friend' closed in.
A very large, very pissed Janarim had her pinned. It mattered little if she feinted to the left or right; at this distance he could easily snap her up. And since they were in a little crag, with seemingly only one entrance, it wasn't as if she could evade him. The creature had hung back the entire time his master chased Dris'rynne on foot, but now that he was on the ground the creature seemed enraged.
Worse yet, Dris'rynne was unarmed and it's master was getting to his feet.

Ming had just left a small village and was making good time on her way back to her former home. This brought about a barrage of feelings she wasn't so sure she was ready to deal with. Though she comforted herself by saying that she would soon have the company of a close friend to help her deal with it all. While she was deep in thought it didn't escape her that there was a commotion. Blinking her pure blue eyes she saw a Janarim that was more or less angry. Instantly her crossbow was in her hand and a bolt was being put into position. One couldn't be too careful. Then she saw a shifter girl that seemed to be on the receiving end of the beasts ire. This was more than a little curious. Ming'we wasn't about to jump in front of the large creature. Despite her clearly obvious Alkidike heritage, not that she claimed it anymore, she was still considered short compared to the Janarim. So instead she fired a warning shot at it and gave a whistle. "Hey. Get your animal under control!" Ming made it a point to yell at the man that was on the ground. Her thought was that this had to be the beast's master. The blonde grabbed another bolt and held it to her weapon though she hadn't pulled back on the string just yet. She was hoping she wouldn't have to. The tough hide of the Oban beast would be a challenge even for her weapon.

The Janarim edged closer to it's smaller prey. A low, rumbling growl built up in the pit of it's stomach and slipped out around the fangs that were so prominently displayed. It was enough to still Dris'rynne's blood in her veins. She wouldn't go down easily in normal circumstances, but unarmed against this beast...
She was too focused on the Janarim to notice the warning shot, but her attackers weren't as paralyzed. The man muttered a few curses, turning to look at the hybrid. He had been about to get up, though now he was wisely keeping himself still. "Why would I want to do that, you filthy bug?" He spat. "If you shoot me then there will be nothing to stop my Janarim from tearing your throat out once it's done with her."
Dris'rynne wasn't sure if he was just that idiotic, or stupidly brave. Maybe he thought he could get to his weapon before she could fire off a shot?

Bug!? Ming'we narrowed her eyes with pure hate at the man that had dared to bring up the heritage she had forsaken not so long ago. "I'm a Sauti Tribeswoman you daft b*****d!" And with that she pulled back on the string to fully load her crossbow. This time she took aim at the man's thigh and let it loose. That would keep him busy for a bit. The blonde turned on her heel and headed for the Janarim. This time she made sure to add another bolt to her weapon and make sure it was locked and ready. The already angry Ming gave a shrill whistle to gain the beasts attention. She was hoping that since she hurt it's master she'd get it rather quickly. For her to be able to keep the girl alive she'd need to kill the large creature since she clear wasn't getting any help from the man that owned it.

As the attacker let out a yowl, his Janarim turned to give the hybrid woman it's full attention. The enraged creature let out a menacing roar as it's large, armored body turned to charge. Dris'rynne knew that if it rushed her that the woman would likely be hurt, even if she fought against it. All she needed was an edge....A bit of sand in her eye gave the young shifter an idea. A stupid idea, but at the time it seemed like the only choice worth trying.
As the creature started to move she rushed out from around it, moving towards the man even as he prepared to strike. He had ripped the bolt from his leg, a stream of blood pouring from the wound, but determinedly he stood with his axe. Dris'rynne kicked his wound, knocking the back back onto his back with a yowl and snatched up his axe. "If you don't want to die, I suggest staying down." She growled, then turned her attention to the Janarim and hybrid.

That's what she wanted! The Janarim was giving her it's full attention and she hoped that the girl it had previously had cornered had enough sense to run. With her crossbow loaded and ready in her hand she stood her ground and waited. When she thought that the beast was close enough she shifted so that she could get closer and just as the mouth opened to nap at her she shoved her armed hand into it's mouth. Crazy! Ming'we pulled the trigger of her crossbow. The tip of the bolt went through the roof of the Oban beast's mouth and lodged into the cerebral cortex. Such a move would mean sudden death for the Janarim but it would also mean that the bulk of it's weight would fall forward onto the hybrid. With a grunt the blonde took tentative steps back so that she could handle the girth a bit easier. (( I took initiative to kill the beastie. If you don't want it to die so soon let me know and I can edit. ))

It didn't take the death of his familiar to get the man moving. Knowing full well when he was outmatched, he had scrambled up and tried to slink off without Dris'rynne noticing. When she raised the axe in warning he took off at a full run. Or, as close to one as he could get with his injury.
When she felt safe enough to drop the axe she did. "Here, let me help you." She moved to push and pull on the deceased Janarim, moving it so that Ming'we could free herself. "I don't know what God sent you my way, but I'm grateful for your help."

She was grateful for the help that the girl gave her. Ming'we hadn't expected her to stick around though. With a smile she nodded her head and wiggled her way out from the weight of the creature. "Thanks." The hybrid yanked her weapon out of the mouth of the Janarim and shook it to knock some of the drool and blood off. "I was just passing by this way." Ming smiled. Though she did wonder what God sent her. Was it the Shifter's god or her own? She didn't dare think that it would have been the old tree that belonged to her mother's people. Clearing her throat she did her best to push the thought from her mind. Then another thought occurred to her. Blinking, Ming looked at the girl and searched for any visible injuries. "Are you alright?"

Dris'rynne brushed a wad of crimson mud from her leg, no doubt a result of the jerk's blood mingling with dirt, and looked over to the older woman. "I've had worse. Just a few scraps and bruises." And a bruised ego. As someone who was used to doing the saving, it was both fulfilling and irritating to be rescued. On the one hand Dris'rynne felt that if the man hadn't had the armored familiar that she would have taken him, but on the other it felt nice to have help for a change. It was such an unexpected change of pace that Dris'rynne still couldn't process it fully.
"What's the thing you shot it with? It looks like a bow, but smaller." Perhaps that's what hybrid Alkidike were given to use? She knew that their kind usually used longbows, but this was...weirder. Like a more compact version with smaller arrows. Didn't they trust her with the larger version?

With a nod of her head she seemed to relax a bit. At least the girl was mostly unharmed. Scraps and bruises she could live with. As she was then asked about her weapon, Ming'we let her gaze fall on it for a moment. "It's a crossbow. Basically a modified version of the bow." There was a shrug as she spoke. "It has more power and accuracy over long distances but takes a little longer to load." She'd already answered some questions about her weapon before, so she could anticipate what her answers would be.

"It looks really bulky." Dris'rynne looked at the stock of the weapon, turning all of the information around in her mind. "Power and accuracy are important, but the load time seems like a pretty big flaw to me. What do you do if an enemy spots you, and comes after you before you have a chance to reload?"
She had seen archers snap one arrow after another in record time, but even they couldn't handle hand to hand combat from experienced warriors. At least the flexibility allowed them to get out of the way fast enough; would a crossbow allow the same? "I don't mean to sound critical, but it just sounds like if you're spotted you're screwed."

She chuckled as the girl pointed out some of the flaws with her weapon. It was true that the reload time was longer than the average bow. Ming'we still wouldn't trade her weapon for anything else. "That is where the accuracy comes into play. Before you are spotted you need to hit your target." The hybrid continued to give a soft laugh before she gave a lift of her shoulders and took on a more serious tone. "When you are spotted it helps to be quick. If you can't.. well then the weight of the crossbow can be used to bludgeon your opponent." That wasn't the best use of the weapon but it was effective. Ming had practiced long enough with her crossbow that she didn't worry too much about her reloading. And there was the battle that had taken place that she'd had a hand in. "I suppose it's ultimately up to personal choice."

Dris'rynne couldn't help it; the thought of bludgeoning someone with the crossbow made her laugh. It was such an unexpected thing from her than her cheeks instantly darkened to a dusky grey, and she coughed to quell the outburst. "I'm sorry that was just..." She shook her head, unable to keep from smiling no matter how hard she tried.
"I like it. The crossbow, that is. I've spent most of my free time training to protect my sisters, but that isn't much time at all." When she wasn't busy cleaning up the homestead, or aiding her grandfather in the smithy, the girls were running her ragged. It was a responsibility she loved, but there were many days that she wished her parents would return. "With something like that I wouldn't have to be strong, just fast. And I wouldn't have to worry about being hit on my blind side."

At least she had made the girl laugh. That was something. "Hey now.. don't doubt the power of a good bludgeoning." The blonde grinned rather sheepishly at her own statement. Of course she'd never actually had to use her crossbow that way. Hearing what the girl was interested in the weapon for had Ming'we nodding her head. "That is true. Being quick and accurate is all you really need."

"Oh trust me, I'm not." Dris'rynne grinned. She knew more than most how effective a good bludgeoning could be. Since she lacked a weapon of her own, the shifter was prone to beating her opponents with whatever was lying around. Rocks, limbs, satchels, frying pans...
It was something to think about. The crossbow, that is, and not the blunt force trauma. Dris gnawed on her lower lip, thinking it over in her mind. That would place her in harms way, though, thus leaving her sisters to either fend for themselves or be at the mercy of her grandparents. She loved them, really she did, but her grandmother was a doddering old fool and her grandfather had anger issues.
"What kind of profession are you into? Are you part of some guard detail, or a game hunter, or...?"
