 Dax busily straightened up around his class room. It was late in the afternoon and he was debating going to his office for an hour or two in case students needed him and to grade papers or just going home. Of course going home would result in him grading papers as well, it would just be harder at home with Sam, his roommate and the Life Skills teacher, there to pester him and be distracting.
He sighed as he walked around the room and fed the fish in the tank at the back of the room. He smiled a bit as he watched them eagerly swim up for food and then go back to darting around the tank, his tail swishing slightly with a slight rustle of scales.
His ears twitched when he heard the slight clip clop of hooves and blinked a little owlishly at the student who was poking their head into his room. "I'm back here." he called out to the student who looked like they were about to leave having not spotted him immediately. "Uh...um..." he snapped his fingers, "Quentin!" he said pointing at the junior and making his way back up to the front of the room. "Anything I can help you with?" he asked pushing up his glasses.

Quentin looked down at his latest quiz; he'd done very well on it but he still wanted to talk to Dax. He moved as quietly down the hall as a hoof creature could. He cautiously looked around before her poked his head through the door. At first, he didn't see anyone. Maybe Dax had gone home already but the door was opened. With a quiet sigh, the young boy went to leave when he heard his teacher holler to him. His cheeks reddened in embarrassment, looking around to see if anyone else had noticed her was there.
Quentin quietly slipped into the classroom and shut the door, feeling a bit of safety come over him. Sighing in relief, the goat boy looked to Dax as he made his way to him. "Y-yeah... I was actually wondering if... maybe you had an extra assignments that were a little more challenging?" He requested as he looked down, grabbing on his other arm's sleeve. "Maybe something involving astronomy?" He added as he looked up a bit. "I really love the stars and I was...sorta.. thinking of maybe... becoming an astronomy professor.." He bit his bottom lip nervously after he explained himself.

Dax raised an eyebrow. Usually he didn't have students coming to him to ask for more difficult assignments, quite the opposite in fact. As far as he could recall off the top of his head, Quentin was a good student though, very bright, put a lot of effort into his assignments and projects. "More difficult?" he hope he didn't sound as incredulous as he thought he did, he was just out of his depth for the moment.
One thing did need to be fixed though. He stepped around the little Bapho boy and opened the door so it was cracked open. "Sorry, school policy. For your safety and mine, doors have to remain at least partially open if we're alone with a student." he didn't elaborate further and he was sure Quentin understood. No one wanted accusations of misconduct with a student on their record. He moved back to his desk and leaned against the side of it facing Quentin and the door, he did gesture to the numerous seats on the front row of the room. "Make yourself comfortable?" he said letting the other decide if he wanted to sit, stand or lean on one of the tables or chairs.
He then smiled a bit and folded his hands just on top of his rather ample stomach. "Astronomy. That's actually my specialty. I was an astrophysics major before I decided to teach here actually." he said. "I used to spend my summers down at the radio telescopes that are around Khiron. I enjoyed it a lot." he said with a small nod and pushed his glasses up. "You're also lucky that I am...uh..." he blushed slightly. "Very well acquainted with Professor Sophie at Leviathan. She teaches astronomy there. She's visited here a few times in the past...but you probably thought she was a student, she's an Imp and on the short side." he chuckled and smiled fondly at the thought of his and well Sam's little partner.
"It's a very intensive major, well to be fair any field of science will require a lot of work, going to need a good grasp on mathematics and physics and a lot of astrophysics and astronomy is very theoretical. So a good mind for thinking outside the box. All of which you've shown on your assignments in the past." he said. "I think you'd do well." he said giving the boy a smile.

Quentin looked down, wondering if asking for more difficult work was rude. After all, Dax probably put the homework and other assignments together. He rubbed his neck shyly as he looked down, "Y-Yeah... please?" He asked politely, "I-It's not because I don't like your homework or assignments or... or.. class..I-I'm sorry...I'm being rude." He stumbled to say in partial panic. He was certain he just made it even worse by panicking and word vomiting all over the place. The goat boy's face reddened as he thought of how embarrassing he was being.
As Dax walked away, Quentin's shoulders slumped. He'd done it now... he'd never get anything more challenging now. He looked up in surprise as Dax opened the door and explained the reasoning to it. "O-oh... i.. just don't want anyone to know I am here..." He said as he rubbed his arm shyly. His attention moved to the seats his teacher had pointed out, looking back to him and shaking his head. "I-I'm comfortable..." He told him as he looked down. His little ears perked as he listened to his teacher, looking up to him with awe. "R-Really! You majored in astronomy?!" A smile tugged at his lips, looking around in fascinated thought. "Wait... y-you know professor sophie?" On a personal level from the sounds of it. Quentin smiled brightly to Dax, "I'd really love to meet her sometime and maybe pick her brain a bit?" He requested as he leaned back on a desk.
Quentin listened to Dax's advice on what it would take to meet the degree that he so desperately wanted. Dax's compliment to him was more than heartwarming, "You really think so?... You think I'd be a great astronomer?" He asked with a hopeful tone. He then pulled out a piece of paper from his backpack as well as a pen. "Are there any books you'd recommend to help me learn more?" He asked curiously.

Dax shook his head. "Not at all, Quentin. It just shows a dedication that many students are unwilling to show because it might earn them ridicule from their peers. There is nothing wrong with being a good student and taking pride in that fact." he knew that was easy to say for him. He was a teacher, and no longer subject to the "acceptable" standards of teenage behavior. "Believe it or not, I know what it's like. It's hard now, but once you hit University, things will get better. Just stick it out okay? Keep your chin up and if you need help my office is open."
He frowned a bit at Quentin wanting to hide the fact he was here, but let it slide and instead nodded. "I did. My thesis was on quasars and the energy they produce." Dax smiled a bit. "I'm sure Sophie would love to meet an aspiring astronomer, and she's generally more than happy to have her brain picked."
"I do, and I'm not just saying that because it's my field, but because you really feel passionate about the subject." Dax pushed away from the desk and moved behind it and looked at the books on his desk. "I can do you one better." one long claw reaching out and gently tugging out a book from between two others. "How bout I let you borrow this one? It's an intermediate level text, I pull some of the Senior's work from this book." he came back around and offered it to the Baphomet. "As for other books..." he pulled a pen out from his pocket and gently took the boy's piece of paper and scribbled a few titles on it. "Sorry, my handwriting is atrocious, but either Miss Lyra or Aella the fallmera who's always helping out in the library should be able to help you find these." he said with a smile.

Quentin nodded to his teacher as he gave him advice, trusting him. "I'll do my best to keep my chin up.." He told him. It would be a task to do as he was advised, so many others teased and bullied him. He was far too shy to make any real friends.. so he thought anyways. "I wish I was already in university.." He mumbled.
A smile broke his usual quiet nature when he heard Dax speak of his thesis. "Quasars? Aren't those the most energetic and distant members of active galactic nuclei?" He asked curiously, remembering reading it from one of his books. "Wait.. so you studied electromagnetic energy? Like radio waves and visible light? That is AWESOME!" He enthused, feeling his excitement practically vibrate him.
"That would be great if I could meet her." He beamed a smile, wiggling a bit happily. He was happy for the praise and his teachers help. "Thank you professor Dax... Really." He said as he took the recommended book and looked at it with a fond grin then looking back to his teacher as he wrote some more titles down. "It's okay, I think I can manage it!" He reassured him as he opened the book the other gave him and read some of the titles.

"I know that feeling well," he said with a sigh. "I couldn't wait to get out of all the clique nonsense that was lower level schooling. Not that it doesn't happen in Uni too...but too a lesser extent." he patted the little Bapho on the shoulder. "Don't wish for all this to be over too soon though. Lots of opportunities after all. Get a good foundation, make friends..." he watched the boy's expression. He knew that last part could be hard, had to be something he could do. "Have you considered joining the Astronomy Club?" he asked. "I sponsor it, might help you meet some like minded individuals?" he offered a small smile.
Dax nodded and leaned back against his desk again, folding his hands again. "They are and I did. Spent two years working on it. Lot of long sleepless nights recording and compiling data, and then writing the whole mess up." he chuckled.
"I'll let her know the next time I see her. Should be soon enough. I think she took a class down to Khiron to view the telescopes." he smiled. "You're welcome."

Quentin bit his lower lip as he listened to more of Dax's advice. His shoulders dropped a bit at his making friends comment. Quentin wasn't good with making friends; that meant he had to talk to them. "I guess... I'll try a little harder." He told him, listening to him talk more. His tail wiggled as he heard mention of an astronomy club. "Oh! That would be great... But I'm not sure if I have time. I do have a lot of homework." He explained, rubbing the back of his neck. "But I'll see what I can do... that sounds like fun." He admitted.
His excitement only faded momentarily before picking up again. He said it was likely that he'd get to meet Professor Sophie! Soon at that! His smile widened on his face, "I bet it was worth all the work!" He chuckled a bit, looking to the book and paper he was given. "I wonder what I will do my thesis on." He mumbled a bit, looking back to Dax. " I should probably go, wouldn't want to keep you any longer than I have.... and I have this whole book and a few others to go through!" He said with a smile.

Dax looked around a little as if he was expecting someone to burst in and contradict what he was about to say next. "It never hurts to take a little time for fun, and sometimes, homework can wait." he finished and then leaned back. "Don't tell anyone I told you that." he winked and smiled a bit. "Teachers aren't supposed to approve of students slacking off after all, however balance is important, and it never hurts to get outside once in awhile."
He smiled and pushed his glasses further up his nose. "We'd be happy to have you, if you can find the time." he nodded.
"It was, and definitely. Nothing more fun than watching Sam shake his head at the star nerds and go huff off to the kitchen to impress us with his culinary prowess." he moved away from the desk and shook his head. "It was no bother at all Quentin. My door is always open for students who need to talk, and if you have any questions from your readings, feel free to track me down and ask."

Quentin smiled brightly to Dax, "Your secret is safe with me." He promised as he thought some. "I guess I'll start gardening again..I used to have a lot of fun doing that with my caretaker." He explained as he rubbed his neck shyly. Dax was right, he couldn't keep living life alone... he need to make some friends. Perhaps he would join the club.
"I can definitely make the time for that!" The baphomet said with a sure tone. "And if I need help then I will hunt you down as requested. Again, thank you so much Professor Dax!" He said with another large grin, collecting the rest of his things then waving as he departed.
