Vespera needed a challenge. It had been days since she had raced against anyone and she was just raring to go. The floofy haired chimera was hovering slightly over the ground, traveling along the pathways of Asphodel Academy. Her eyes moved constantly, searching for any nightmare with wings so she could force them (or at least try to force them) to race her. A little freshling wasn't exactly the most intimidating thing ever. She wished she could grow faster! She dreamed about being a tall, statuesque beauty; an adventurer and racer that everyone looked up to. The epitome of free.
Her purple eyes soon glazed over, her mind lost to her dreams and future adventures. She was completely out of it for a few minutes, it would have been longer if she hadn't crashed into another nightmare. Her eyes snapped open and she let out a squeak of confusion as she fell onto her wings. She stood up quietly and contorted to check on her wings. Once she realized they were fine she turned back to the nightmare she had crashed into, about ready to snap at them to 'watch where they were going and not mow little freshlings down.'
Vespera's purple eyes widened and a huge grin appeared on her face. It was a chimera! She had ran into a chimera! What fun the blue winged chimera would be to race! "Hey you! I challenge you to race me!"

Arden was out roaming the school, mostly keeping to himself as he always did. It a good of a day outside as it could be in Below, having long grown used to the constantly dreary days. Clutching the strap of his bag tighter with one hand, he continued his leisurely walk, not having any more classes for the remainder of the day. Completely minding his own business, something suddenly blind sided him behind and he stumbled, wings flapping as he tried to keep his balance. "Whoa!"
He turn on the heel of his sneakers, blue eyes wide. Judging by the amount of force that had crashed into him, he was very surprised to turn and see a small Freshling before him. Bewildered, he looked around first, and to his confusion, saw no handler for the smaller Chimera. He was ready to help her back onto her feet but Vespera was already animated and on her feet.
"A race?" he echoed a bit dumbly, blinking in confusion. His ears twitched, shaking his head as his jaw flapped without words. "Uh, slow down. I'm not going to race you," Arden informed, looking around again for any Nightmare, anyone, but seeing he was left to himself, he couldn't just leave this Freshling by herself. He knelt down onto a knee, shaking his head a little. His wings closed, pressing tight against his back as they pitched downwards. "Uhm, what's your name?" the older Chimera asked, trying to distract her and turn the conversation around. Had he ever even been down by the playrooms? Arden hadn't ever had a reason to be down there, he didn't even know most of the rules for Freshlings other than don't be alone.

Vespera's eyes narrowed and her mouth set into a scowl. She crossed her little arms tight across her chest and flapped her small wings, lifting her body to hover slightly above the ground. "It's because I'm little isn't it? You think I'll be easy to beat! Well, I'll have you know I'm going to be the best flyer ever! So race me! I'll kick your butt all the way to The Crown." She stared up at the older chimera. She had no idea who he was, but he had wings and he had to race her. He just had to! She needed something to do!
Vespera glared heatedly at Arden, her mind set on somehow forcing the older, probably stronger, boy to race her so he could lose and then grovel at her feet and beg for her forgiveness for underestimating her. Obviously, she had a pretty high opinion of herself. She finally got a good look at the boy in front of her. He was probably the most handsome boy she'd ever seen. However, there was something that stuck out to her far more than his gentle blue eyes, his wings weren't muscled enough for his age. She flew closer and reached out, touching her fingers lightly to his wings. She ran her fingers carefully along one before scoffing suddenly. "Have you ever even flown before? You're wings are flimsy. Anyways, I'm named Vespera. What is your name, oh weak and pretty one?"

He made a little confused face. Even if it wasn't about his wings and the fact he did not fly, it would totally be because she was a Freshling. No matter how much he would have loved to let her win, Arden knew it was pretty hard to fly under speed short distances unless you just did a glide. Staying airborne needed speed. Before he could educate the violet-haired Chimera, she was already off on a new tangent. Arden stood, just bewildered yet.
"Crown's a very far ways away," Arden informed without conviction, frowning slightly. What did this little girl know about the Crown, other than that's where her kin resided? Oh man. He was confused, and there was no clear way out. He jumped as Vespera zoomed around him, little cold fingers touching his wings.
The Senior turned again to face her, wings flaring out for a moment, rattling in place before moving tight against his back once more. He had gotten weird and small before, but never flimsy. They were still appendages, they weren't going to break off just because they had never been in the air. "Uh," he started again dumbly, folding his arms low across his chest slightly defensively. "No. I've never uh, flown before." His eyes narrowed slightly, jaw pointing to the ground as he took the Freshling in. "Vespera," he tacked onto his disjointed sentence, blowing a breath out of his nose as his tail curled over his feet.

Vespera let out a little 'hmph' as she turned her nose up at the older chimera. "Of course I know that. I'm not stupid, ya know!" She thought she was pretty smart for her age, even without all those classes she was required to take. She could learn all she needed in the sky... Or even from people who knew the joy and freedom flying brought you.
Her purple eyes shifted back to the brown haired chimera as he confirmed her suspicions. He'd never flown before. Even if she managed to force him into a race he'd be no challenge at all. She crossed her arms again, her face contorting into a pouty expression that freshlings were oh too good at. "Now tell me your name already. I already said mine. I can't believe you've never flown before. What kinda chimera doesn't fly?" She finished with a scoff. She poked him lightly in the chest. He hardly had any muscle on his body either. "How will you make it anywhere outside of this academy? Don't you want to fly? Don't you want to be free?"

Arden could only raise a brow at the little Freshling. He didn't have a lot of experience interacting with the young ones, but he quietly wondered if they were all this cocky. He didn't exactly think Freshling took Culture and Geography 101 classes, tossing unfamiliar words and expectations at them. "I didn't say you weren't smart," he corrected a bit quietly, arms falling down at his sides as he continued to watch Vespera waggle about.
Part of him wanted to scoff and turn away, mostly because he didn't know how to take the direct criticism, and the other because it chapped him slightly to see another Chimera so disrespectful. His grandmother would never let him get off with being so upfront and blunt, and even after years at the Academy, he still clung on tightly to the values he was raised on. "My name is Arden, but you didn't ask politely," he tried on, not really used to scolding, or well, back talking. Was it back talking still when the other was 3 feet shorter than you?
Frowning even more heavily, his tail whipped behind him to curl the other direction around his legs as her chubby fingers poked him in the chest. He was trying not to get agitated, always more of a mellow peacekeeper, but he had a hard time getting over his anxiety with those questions even when he was alone in his room with no one there to judge. "There's still trains and portals," he deflected. "Only Chimera and Fallen have wings - all the rest still travel and get around too."
And freedom? Sure, it was a boarding school and they rarely left until Graduation, but the Chimera born from the Cache were already free. It was their choice if they wanted to join the Crown or not - there was nothing stopping them from finding their own make shift clans here. He scowled even harder, lifting his head to look out towards the Academy's yard. "I think you've been listening to too many stories Vespera."

Vespera acknowledged his quiet words with a brief nod of her head. She hoped he hadn't just said that to placate her. He didn't seem like the type though. She looked up at him, eyebrows furrowing slightly as she once again studied him. She was being rude, wasn't she? He was probably made fun of by other nightmares for his scrawny appearance and flimsy wings already.
He finally said his name, adding quietly that she hadn't asked politely. She blinked. That was... true. She sighed, pouting and scuffling her feet on the ground. Sorry 'bout that. I wonder how many people are going to need to tell me to stop being so rude before I learn to think before I speak... But anyways, it's nice to meet ya Arden." She held out her hand shyly as she met his eyes. Teachers said to shake hands with people you meet. It was the polite thing to do. "And I quess you are right about the transportation thing... I'm being kinda mean, aren't I? But flying is so much fun! Wouldn't you like to at least try? I could even teach you! I taught myself, ya know!" Her eyes sparkled and her wings twitched excitely. "It'd be fun!"
She soon looked crestfallen at his scowl and his words. Too many stories, huh? It was true that really all she knew about her race came from books and occasionally another chimera, who like her knew everything from books because they too were from the cache. She blinked up at Arden, putting on a shaky smile. "I never really meant to make you feel bad. You're too handsome to scowl. Please smile. I'm sorry I'm bad company."

Arden just continued to frown slightly as he finally looked back to Vespera, eyes narrowed the slightest. It took him a moment to accept her apology, making a soft sound. "It's alright," he informed in a slightly defeated tone, not wanting the Freshling to feel completely bad. Regardless, it was hard for him to walk away without accepting an apology, resolving things was a good way to keep the peace.
He had to bend down slightly to meet her hand, but he watched his claws as he gave her light shake. "Nice to meet you too Vespera," Arden returned before straightening to his full height, wings still tucked shyly against his back.
Arden shook his head the slightest, ears twitching briefly. "I have tried flying before. I can't fly," he assured, still not seeming sure of himself. "I've been pushed off of mountain tops by my clan mates before - it doesn't kick in." His nose scrunched the slightest, remembering that particular day. It was even more embarrassing when his mother had to come rescue him, because the ledge he had landed upon bruised his arm and he couldn't work through the pain to scale the mountain side and back up to their home. "I'm glad you like it though."
He tilted his head the slightest, feeling a bit of heat at his face. A Freshling really shouldn't be talking like that. "How about you show me some more of your flying?" Arden decided on, ignoring the whole comment on his looks and the encouragement to smile, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he fidgeted.
