The Story So Far:

As the Life buildings crumbled in on themselves, rescue operations had begun before the dust had even settled. Hunters from all divisions were called in to assist, finding survivors, bringing the wounded to safety. Salvaging most research could wait. Most research.

Minipets are surprisingly fragile when removed from their natural habitat. Within an hour, long before talk could turn from rescuing bodies to rescuing supplies, frightened escapees from their broken cages were dissolving as they fled from the collapsing structure. Secure cages where runic systems had been damaged were found full of nothing but air. In the ruined hallways of the Life building, a couple empty harnesses were lying motionless on the floor from when 'walkies' had been interrupted by catastrophe.

However, during the chaos there had been a small number of minipets released to safely escape the destruction, equipped with a way to survive the hours that followed. As their cages were opened each one had been fitted with a runic collar prototype to prevent them from dissolving. These were minipets involved in long-term experiments, many of which have been on the island for years, some even surpassing the average hunter's own life expectancy. By letting these few minipets loose to flee from the falling building, some of that research could continue.

Now these minipets are wandering about on the island, scared by the recent events, and experiencing the first real freedom they've had in years. Every one of them needs to be caught now that the immediate crisis is over, the runic charge in their collars will not last another 10 hours.

Quote:
This ORP is a prequel for research related minipet plots. You don't have to participate in this ORP to play later, neither are you obligated to RP later if your hunter just wants to chase down some critters now. This is merely another island recovery activity your hunter can perform, assigned or willingly in their spare time. =3 If you are interested in the aforementioned plots and your hunter has had no previous experience with minipets, you may want to RP here to introduce them to the joys of working with these delightful creatures.

To play:

Roll 3d20, and use the total along with the prompts inside the spoiler tags to see how your hunter fares at catching an escaped minipet. You can RP together or on your own, and do as much or as little as you desire! Feel free to select your own minipet for chasing down. Logistically speaking, there were only about 20 pets set loose, but this is about the experience so we really won't be counting~ When your hunter catches one, they will simply be put into carriers already salvaged from the labs. Remember, these are among the most tame, friendly minipets on the island due to their long captivity, but they are also scared and confused!

GOOD LUCK!

Catch Success!
1. You chase the minipet into the dorms before cornering it amongst the lounge furniture.
2. You spot a minipet that has fallen asleep from exhaustion and safely catch it.
3. The minipet comes willingly when you call it, it is hoping for head scratches.
4. You have to rescue the scared, trembling creature from up in a tree.
5. The minipet is distracted by a fluttering leaf on the training field and is easy to catch.
6. This one only comes when you offer it food and talk in baby-speak.
7. You catch the minipet while it is trying to eat something it shouldn't be eating.
8. The dumb thing is stuck half way down the cliffs by the beach and can't move.
9. You pull a minipet carrier out of the building rubble. There is already a minipet hiding in it.
10. The nervous minipet gets blood on your hands when you pick it up, not it's blood, nor yours.
11. It takes some coercing to 'rescue' the minipet from a young, animal-loving trainee.
12. This minipet had found it's way back to it's broken cage in the lab.
13. You rescue a trai- minipet from a trainee's delicious ankle.
14. You have to wade chest-deep into the ocean to catch the minipet.
15. A makeshift trap had to be made to catch this minipet.
16. You catch a minipet waiting desperately for the cafeteria door to open and let it in.
17. You chase the minipet all over, yet it only comes to you the moment you give up.
18. The minipet gets cornered in a very creepy cell in the dorm building basement.
19. You catch the minipet trying to wiggle into a hole that is too small for it's girth.
20. The minipet is sitting under an unconscious hunter's infirmary cot, unwilling to move. (You miiight know the hunter.)

50. You get told off trying to chase the minipet through the infirmary tents.
51. A hunter spotted a minipet earlier, and accidentally points you in the wrong direction.
52. It darts into a hole in the Life building wreckage, too small for you to follow.
53. Several twists and turns later, the minipet loses you in the towns.
54. You can't even catch sight of the minipet, all you hear are it's minipet noises.
55. Two minipets are fighting with each other, you lose both trying to break them up.
56. A hunter, an intermediate, and a minipet walk into a bar...
57. The minipet leads you to an injured hunter who needs to be taken care of first.
58. Your attempts to rescue the creature result in many many scratches, and no minipet.
59. Something has been marking trees, but you can't find the creature at all.
60. A group of hunters breaking for lunch chase the minipet off right before you arrive.

Frankly, Dawson needed a break from pulling people from the wreckage. That, and the sounds of the squeaking minipets could only be heard for so long before he put down his water bottle and hustled over to help. His own particular experiences with minipets were limited: at best he had helped, like all trainees had at some point in their life, clean the cages, and on several occasions had moved cages to different laboratories for whatever testing was going on. He tried not to ask questions in case they happened to be gruesome.

Now was definitely not the time for questions. If he was really needed back, someone could grab him. Dawson needed to catch them all.

Or, in this case, get bitten by the first one, a rather wily looking pirate scareon that scampered away immediately afterwards.

Rubbing the spot he'd been bitten, Dawson broke off pursuit as another trainee tried to dive for the scareon, wincing in sympathy as the girl face planted instead. For little animals, they sure were smart...Well, smart asses in some cases.

For instance, he honestly thought a rather innocently looking foxfire would let him catch it. It seemed to be quivering from all the panic and noise and commotion, frozen in place as its neighbors ran amok. But when Dawson started to bend down to pluck it up, the minipet seemed to abruptly realize its legs were functioning and zipped right between his legs as fast as he could blink.

"Gahdamnit!" Dawson muttered to himself as he fanned himself with his hat.

s**t, and that wasn't even counting the aquarium he was pretty sure was kept around here somewhere. Maybe Harley was there or something...

For his third attempt, Dawson chased after a Poms who looked strangely like a pokemon he recognized. At least this one didn't leave him winded and disappointed: no, instead Dawson accidentally chased the thing all the way to the beach, and by then even the particularly patient Moon was starting to find himself yelling at it.

"Would ya just not?" he growled as he trudged in the sand after the scampering thing. He was just readying to take a chance and leap at it when the poms sharply veered into the surf and dove in. Stunned, he could only watch as it paddled off, squeaking victoriously.

Snorting like a bull, he returned to the main camp of sorts and trailed after several more potential captures, managing a smile and a pat on the back to those in passing that he saw had been successful but growing more glum by the minute. Did he just suck? You'd think with all the training Chris had forced on him, he'd at least be fast enough to catch one of these God damn things...

And it was maybe that attitude that kept scaring them off. Dawson noticed as he turned his head and locked eyes with one of the nearby minipets that its ears pinned back in response. Before he could even change direction it was zipping away, tail tucked.

He ran a hand down his face and groaned.

He was considering just giving up before he looked like an idiot flailing after all these creatures when he heard someone's yelp: "IT'S GONNA EAT ME! HELP!"

A little overdramatic, but it would do.

As Dawson approached, he assessed that the poor trainee, a straw of a teenage boy in a much too baggy coat, scrabbling on the ground as something dog-like latched onto his ankle and growled. Honestly, if Dawson hadn't had a long long day, he might have laughed at the sight: poor guy looked like the explosions had literally just woken him up, and with that sort of reaction he probably hadn't been at Deus very long. Rough way to start their career.

"Aw, hush it now," he told them, half and half gruff but amused as he squatted down and grabbed the trainee's leg. Said trainee didn't quite stop making noises, but at least it wasn't a theater-proud screech for aid. As the guy whimpered, Dawson extracted the minipet and held it by the scruff of its neck, unable to help but chuckle at its spunk.

"Didn' draw no blood," he informed the trainee as he got to his feet and offered him a hand up. "Minies r' harmless. Go on now."

The minipet continued to growl even as it hung limp in his grasp, at least seeming to accept defeat. For now.

Interrogation wasn't what she good at, she was glad to be freed from hours of questioning unfamiliar faces while having a stern face. Walking along the corridor, she kneaded the face muscles, worried if she would have face cramp if she did it for a longer time. Luckily there was no one seeing her making all sorts of squished weird faces on her way to take a rest, she gave out a tired sigh and her eyes drifted lazily. "I don't want to do this anymore, gimme other things to do!" Holding her arms up, she yelled.

There was a small noise of something bumped into a wall from her back, Shu remained her hand-up pose and turned around, where she spotted a bunny rubbing its forehead. The petite huntress stared at the minipet and blinked, mumbled if she was too exhausted that she fell asleep somewhere and now dreaming. The minipet looked at her for a few seconds and then fled.

Like Alice in the wonderland, she ran after it while saying "Where're you going, wait for me" sort of words. Imperfectly, it was not white in color and making weird crackles as it hopped away.

It must be a dream or else she won't mistake a mop as a net. <That's a minipet, silly.> The huntress panted while answering, "What's a minipet doing here?" <Must be escaped from the lab.> "Oh noooooooooo, it will melt." <Who cares.> "I care!" She steered to go and grab a cage before she went back to the building she last seen the minipet.

It was somehow fortunate she didn't spend much time to catch it in her sight again, there they started another round of "catch me if you can". Holding a cage on one hand, she sent a text to Max in her assistance.

Text to Max:
Max Puppy! Emergency! I'm chasing a minipet not in the cage =͟͟͞͞(๑•̀=͟͟͞͞(๑•̀д•́=͟͟͞͞(๑•̀д•́๑)=͟͟͞͞(๑•̀д•́)))
I announce that Minipet Rescue Squard is now officially formed, come and join me in saving poor critters from melting ─=≡Σ(([ ⊐•̀⌂•́]⊐

P.S. It would be best if you can carry some cages with you. Maybe a trolley.

"パーフェクト~!" She put her phone back into coat pocket and sped up to chase the bunny, the cage rattled with her movement. "It surely runs fast......I'm tired...." She leaned against one side of the wall to restore her stamina. "But I'm not giving it up!" She ran again, along the corridor somewhere.

"Hehe, you have no place to hide." Saying it like some creepy bad guy, Shu cornered the minipet to a corner and ready to catch it with a lunge. The heavy bunny, using the top of her head as a jumping board and fled towards the opposite direction it came. "Ah, you sneaky thing, stop, stop, you're gonna melt if you don't go back into your cage." She fell and then quickly stood up to chase after it.

She watched as it stopped in front of a classroom door, she bent down and gingerly approached it, feeling her footsteps were as light as feathers. The door clicked and she seemed to see the bunny smirked at her, OMG is she really dreaming, before it hopped into a crowd of hunter marching out. With the order to dismiss, all of them rushed from the door.

Being a shortie, Shu couldn't get a peek of where the minipet ran off with the barrier of crowd. She waited in panic until everyone got out of the room but the bunny was nowhere to be seen already.

No matter the reason, Max would always come when Shu called (or texted, in this instance), much like an exceptionally loyal dog whose ears were always trained on its owner. In truth, it wasn't important to have a reason at all, but the circumstances surrounding this one made it important in itself.

He hadn't been much help in the beginning - as new as he was here, his efforts to aid his division in the midst of the crisis had fallen short. He wasn't strong enough to help move rubble, and wasn't familiar enough with the building or the labs within it to be of much assistance in comparison to those who had come here long before him. But when he discovered the terrible state of the minipet containment areas, he knew he had to help, even if he wasn't entirely sure how. It was easy to gather up the lost creatures that didn't wander far from 'home', but by the time he gently tucked each of them back in the place they seemed happiest, occasionally switching some of them just to be sure they were super happy, it was obvious that many of them were missing.

And that was really sad.

Fortunately, it was around the time of this realization that he got Shu's message. His eyes lit up as brightly as the screen on the phone.

Quote:
Text to Shu:

oh nooo! I wondered where theyd all gone!! (υ ŏᆺŏυ)
Im with all their friends now who are already all safe-n-sound so I'll tell them that the MRS which is the BEST TEAM EVER will be bringing their pals back soon!!
See you soon I wont let you down therell be NO MELTING!!!! ♥

As he gathered all of the supplies he could carry, including a small stash of FEAR candies that he shoved into his pockets, he truly did take the time to tell each and every one of the minipets exactly what he said he would. Once that was finished, he hurried off down the hallway, stealing an empty wagon from one of the cleanup crews with a long 'sooooooorrrryyyyyyyyy' called back to them.

The rattle of the little wagon wheels slowed and came to a halt when he did, pausing to let a group of hunters pass through. He hopped anxiously from one foot to the other, as if his inability to stand still would somehow make them move faster. Though it didn't, he did think he saw a glimse of something else hopping just beyond the crowd, which made his antsy movements escalate into fidgeting and impatient whining.

If he had seen a minipet, it definitely wasn't there once the crowd thinned. Shu was, however, and that was just as good. No, better! He dropped the wagon's handle and leapt towards her to wrap her up in a hug.

"Ahaaaa, got yooou," he laughed. "Look! I brought some stuff that'll maybe be good to help! Treats're good bribes, right? And we can make a nice pile of happy all together instead of having to carry one at a time! So what's next for the MRS? Is there one in there?"

Before he even finished asking the question, he tried to peek into the room. Maybe he had seen something hopping around.

33. The minipet you are chasing begins happily paddling off into the ocean???

There was something coming for her when the phone beeped and she checked the message from Max. Her chuckling for the adorable droop-ear puppy emoji changed to a small scream as she was held. She felt the impact had forced her body to incline. The tensed muscles eased as his voice went into her ears, "I'm not the target you should catch, Max," snickered Shu. Still putting her head around his waist to still herself, the huntress peeked over his shoulder. "A wagon and treats, you're so smart, puppy." It was their moontalk that would recall each single wonderful moments they spent together.

"Don't mix up with candies for human though." She giggled as she made a sally. Sometimes, she would put candies into the pocket of his coat and she hoped he won't put them together. The fear candies bought from another world had lovely packages that can be on a par with their world's. "They don't taste good to us, anyway, we need to head back to grab some cages first. The bunny I chase after was gone." Shu pouted as he released her petite figure and pulled the wagon besides him.
====================
Two was much better than one, they swiftly filled the wagon with cages. On their way, she explained how she thought she must be dreaming when she saw the minipet with rusty red color sat in the middle of the path and later how she began a race with it and lost its sight at the door he nearly tackled her down. "AH!" She suddenly cried. "It was it, Max!" Pulling the wagon that rattled low but loud, the two ran after the Rust Rabbit to the beach.

Like lovers paddling towards the sunset, it headed to the ocean. "Oh no Max, catch it." Ignoring the fact that she wasn't wearing water-proof footwear, she hopped into the water and it splashed her clothes all wet. "Hey bunny, stop." First the water was around her ankle, it raised to the middle of her calf as she moved further away from the beach.

39. Your minipet almost gets DESTROYED by a very nervous trainee.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:17 pm

Between the praise he'd gotten for bringing the right supplies and their general success in finding wayward minipets, Max was feeling cheerful and confident. With this extra little boost, there was absolutely no hesitation when Shu caught sight of the rust rabbit and asked for him to catch it; he hopped right into the water, neglecting to think about his clothes as well, splashing loudly as he hurried after it.

"I'll bring it to you! It's okay, I've got it!" And probably would have caught it, had he not been interrupted by something much larger than a minipet.

A panicking trainee shot out of the water with an armful of runes, coughing up seawater as he awkwardly stumbled towards the beach. As he shouted something incoherent at them, possibly about seaweed touching him, he nearly stepped on the rust rabbit - and when that was avoided, he still managed to kick it up into the air with one of the diving flippers he was wearing.

"Nooo what--no!" Horrified (and completely ignoring the plight of the trainee), he lunged forward to try to catch the poor bunny. He landed with a wet plop in the shallow water, and the rabbit hopped off of the top of his head and continued to skillfully evade them.

Half drenched, he stood and rubbed the water out of his eyes, then looked at Shu with a frown.

"I don't understand. Why's it not want to stay with us?" His shoulders drooped momentarily, before he raised his hands to cup them around his mouth, calling after the clever minipet. "Heeeey mister bunny! We're real nice, we just wanna help! And you could be meeting Shu right now! Shu's the best, mister bunny, you're making a bad mistake!"

37. The minipet gets half way to towns before you lose sight of it.

She'd shouted to remind Max beware of the water depth when the boil cheerfully paddled forwards like a bomb. "Max - no, no - in front of you - look aheadddd" The petite huntress who saw the figure emerged from the water kept jabbing her finger towards the direction of the sea. For a second, she wondered if Melvin who was a rune master dove like him for the runes but shortly she yelled out. "Ah~" It was almost one second after his flipper touched with the butt of the minipet and sent it flying.

Shu moved the fingers she used to cover her eyes and peeked between the gaps, the diver lost his balance and fell while Max was lying in water and the rabbit on his head took a glance at her before running away. She walked towards Max, offered him a hand. "Hmm, it might think we're playing hide-and-seek, we are the 'it' and it needs to run?" She wasn't too sure. The giggles after hearing what Max said faded and she cupped her hands around her mouth like the boil, "Not, -Mister Bunny, Max's the best, I'm just the second best, but we're both nice people - creeple! You don't need to be afraid." She shifted her brisk eyes to look at him, mouth in a pleasant curve as she spoke. There was a time of a few seconds she wondered how Max knew the gender of the minipet.

They took a stroll back to the sand, squeezed the excessive water from their clothes. The wet coats was bulky but they dried quickly under the fine Sun. She flung hers in the midair, the clothes inside were sheer and became slightly transparent. "Max, how's the fear candies?" She remembered he plopped the water. "Are you okay if we continue?"

Whether they'd taken a break or not wasn't important, pushing the wagon, they headed towards the towns. Unfortunately, with some delay, they lost it in the middle. Seldom visited the towns besides stopping at the Morris's house, Shu had no idea where they were or which way to go. "Max," called Shu. "I think - we're lost." The huntress said in an embarrassed voice.

They're in the town area! Maybe they can visit Morris's house and play with Peter biggrin ...but first they need to find the correct path~
