After all of her shenanigans and battles and just generally bizarre events, Piper was ready to just hoof it back to Amity or something. There was only so much crazy she could take, literally and figuratively, and while she cared about her friends dearly, she wasn’t willing to keep sticking around a clearly insane place when it afforded her absolutely no good loot, no good secrets, and just plain no good anything at all. She had enough of the whole misery business to last her two or three months at least before the cycle continued again. Hell, she’d even take another incredibly vivid but probably horrifying nevertheless dream vision thing over this very real and very exhausting limbo of working and wandering.

So she took a much needed break and sat in the shade somewhere in the village. Honestly it was hard to tell where she was most—almost all of the time, what with this constant fog everywhere. It gave her a different sort of heebie jeebies. This wasn’t your garden variety graveyard fog ambiance; there was something hostile about it that she couldn’t put her finger on, or just creepier than normal at the very least. It really didn’t help that the villagers weren’t very forthcoming.

A sleuth would love this environment, she imagined. She could see Brenley maybe growing inquisitive about the whatsit properties on this doohickey and how it correlates to the moon patterns in whatever month and also look at these plants and herbs maybe we should mash them together with this other concoction I’ve been working on and ugh this was getting too nerdy even for imagination land. She imagined Lock would just blankly stare and then ask why, which made her laugh out loud. And Ignatius, much like Hel, was probably bounding about energetically, not the least bit deterred about their new situation.

Jack, she had missed them all. The second they got out of here and back to school, she was going to arrange some sort of hangout to catch up with them, or at the very least grab every boil individually and drag them to the maul or something.

Sighing, she tried to hail a passing cloaked villager with a wave of her hand. “Hey! Um, excuse me, can I ask you something really quickly?”

The villager turned, and she could barely see two amber eyes gleaming from under the hood. They were bent over as if troubled by something.

“Uh…You wouldn’t happen o know if there was, like, a spare bus we could use, or something? Ours kinda broke down, and we’ve been stuck here for a while, so…” She trailed away expectantly.

The villager blinked. “What does it matter,” the voice rattled blandly. “You are as doomed as we are now. Your vehicle breaking was a dark omen, a sign of the despair yet to come.”

“Uh…okay then…I’ll just…”

She quickly darted away.

Jack help her, these creeple were insane… Maybe literally. Who knew what effect inhaling all that cruddy miasma did to you. She definitely didn’t feel good and it had only been a few hours! Maybe she needed to keep up, like, a ball of air around her mouth and nose at all times just in case or something…But that was too exhausting, even at her level. And she had to conserve for energy for the things lying in wait for them out there. UGH.

“HEY,” she shouted at another random villager as she walked by them. “Look, can you please just direct me to, like, your leader or something? I really just wanna leave. I won’t even touch your secret village treasure or whatever.” Had she said that aloud? DAMN IT.

The villager didn’t seem to notice, however. They looked straight through her with glassy eyes and a smile (maybe?) and waved t her as casually as if she had only said hi.

“Right.” Piper sighed harshly.
