A reunion encounter RP between
ChibiWrites' Ariel
Lady Argentum Draconis' Prospera

The sun shone directly overhead when Ariel arrived in the city. Since her exodus from her island home, she had flown many places. Originally, the Goddess had turned her path northward, but most of what she had found there were ice-capped mountains and a poignant sense of loneliness. She'd worked a while in a few villages, tripping over herself to help and obey - only to have her efforts revoked as the villagers inevitably rallied to worship her.

So, she'd flown south, heart swelling in nostalgia as the warmth in the south lifted her wings and lightened her flight. Ariel looked about the marketplace at the center of the city - all of which was sprawling and luxurious as the day was long. 'Mistr- Prospera would be well suited to this life.' she thought, chest tightening at the mental slip. The Goddess settled against the fountain at the approximate center of the main plaza, idly watching people mill about. Some stopped to stare, gawking at her stature and obvious etherealness. Ariel had no doubt that a summons from the region's ruler would come for her soon, beseeching yet obnoxious for an audience.

Prospera allowed herself to be pulled along with the tide of people that moved through the market place. She tugged her hood a bit to make sure it was still secure and continued to browse the stands and storefronts. While she could have sent a servant out to go shopping for her, there were just some things you couldn't trust other people to do for you. It didn't help that despite her previous desires to return to her rightful place in the world, she now found it utterly confining and sometimes tedious. Life had been hard on the island, there was no denying that, but she'd at least been free to pursue her own interests in her free time, now she had a whole duchy to worry about...and the troubles that her lands got into seemed endless. She'd been woken up in the middle of the night more times than she liked because of "emergencies." Sometimes she was tempted to make herself disappear after she retired to her chambers just so she could get a good night's sleep, but no...she's sworn off her magic...even if the effects of it still lingered in her glowing eyes and arcane markings on her body.

At least Miranda was happy in her marriage. One thing out of how many gone right? She shook her head and she stopped a stall selling scarves, her eye lingering on a blue one. While it was near the color of her eyes, it wasn't herself she thought of but Ariel. She absently wondered where the spirit was now...and if she was happy...

She turned quickly before the stall keeper could ask if the scarf interested her and and continued on her way towards the fountain in the central plaza. She needed to get out of this press of humanity and catch her breath before returning to the palace and the endless parade of duties that awaited her.

Children were the first to approach her. Ariel wasn't too surprised - they often were the only ones with enough of a lack of impulse control to act on their curiosity and draw near. One of them, dark with curly hair, petulantly held up her arms and grunted to be picked up. The Goddess smiled and obeyed. The little one sat in her lap, happily soaking in the attention from the adult who murmured among themselves. The others, three or so - they kept coming! - sat next to her on the fountain, tossing up questions and admiring her wings.

Ariel was sure her docility would garner her the presumed title of a Goddess of Nurturing or Motherhood - neither of which were hers, of course, but there were worse things to be confused for. She felt a sudden pang, wings drooping momentarily, as she thought of the child she HAD raised - a beautiful, free girl who played in the surf and laughed at the stars, yet who still willingly obeyed and learned as was her place. Ariel missed Miranda, almost as much as she missed Prospera.

'Ah, but alas. They are both so far from me.', she thought, gently returning the little one to her mother when the woman had gathered her courage and approached the Goddess. Ariel stood, gracefully extending her wings as the children scattered with excited squeals. She stood almost half again as tall as most in the crowd, eyes doing a dull sweep of those in its midst. She had lingered long enough in this city, something in the air making her itch and stirring her Domain.

It almost felt like- It did not matter. Ariel doubted her much beloved mistress would be out in the streets during the highest point of the sun, if it were at all possible the Goddess had found her fabled city.

Prospera finally won through to the front of the crowd surrounding the fountain. What on earth could be causing such a crowd? Was there some street performer earning their keep? Well she had coin in her pocket if that was the case. Even if she had no interest in the show, she could at least be polite. Without even looking up, she took a moment to fish a coin out of her purse in preparation for the eventual passing of the hat, but when she looked up again, it was not a performer she saw, but the tallest woman she'd ever seen. Well except for...

She turned slightly and the wings stretched outwards, and there was no question. It was Ariel. There was no mistaking those wings, or that face. Oh, god in heaven what should she do? Approach her? But then she would make herself known to the entire crowd and that was really the last thing she wanted. What would happen if she didn't? Would Ariel linger? Perhaps find lodging that she could later send someone to fetch her from? Or would she simply disappear into the ether again?

Another excellent question was why did the sight of her former servant stir such longing in her? Did she really long for those days trapped on that tiny island with only Ariel for "civilized" company? She dared not answer that question. Not yet at least.

When it looked like the goddess was moving to depart, Prospera felt a small swell of panic. No, no..., and without thinking she broke towards the fountain, the goddesses name coming unbidden to her lips. "Ariel!"

Ariel wings dropped as though broken, a pang shooting through her chest when she heard a voice, a painfully familiar voice, call to her from the crowd. "Mist- Prospera?" she gasped, whirling around in time to see the other woman break free from the masses and stumble toward her. She moved on instinct, reflex really, catching the noble before she could fall. The Goddess idly fixed Prospera's hood before removing her hands as if stung. 'That is no longer my place.' she thought wistfully, tilting her head so she could look at the other woman curiously. "What brings you so far from the palace?"

"It is not safe here." she murmured, eyes keen on the cloaked figures that had appeared on the edge of the crowd when Prospera had made herself known. A noble and Goddess captured by common thugs? That was laughable, and yet... "Come with me." Ariel said, firmly grabbing Prospera's hand and moving them quickly from the central plaza. She was uncertain which direction the palace was in this sprawling city, but assumed the other woman would be able to show her the way once Ariel had gotten her to safety.

She nearly tripped over her own feet in her rush to get to the goddess and when those arms caught her a shiver went up her spine. She quickly regained her feet and looked up at the other. "Ariel." she said hoping that whatever strange emotions that had overwhelmed her senses moments before wasn't apparent in her voice.

She didn't shoo away Ariel's hands as she fixed the hood that had fallen away from her blindingly red hair, but her brow furrowed slightly when the other pulled away her hands so suddenly, as if she'd been shocked. Had she subconsciously done something to cause Ariel to react that way? No, as far as she knew she'd summoned no little shocks to eschew physical contact. Perhaps it was something...psychological? That seemed...likely.

"A strange desire over took me this morning to get out and be a simple woman on her market day than the ruler of the land." she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders. "Why...why are you here though?" had Ariel been drawn her because of her? She would have thought all the bindings that had tied them together would have been broken, but if the goddess was still under some strange compulsion...that wouldn't do. Prospera no longer had the desire to control Ariel.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw the cloaked figures move and suppressed a sigh. Of course they'd followed her even though she'd done her best to slip out quietly this morning. She was about to protest when Ariel took her hand and was pulled along after the taller woman. "Ari--" but her voice was cut off as they charged through the crowd and down side street after side street.

A strange electricity surged through Ariel's blood - whether it was from reuniting with a former mistress or the simple thrill of losing their pursuers, she did not know. Though no orders came, the Goddess allowed a bit of her arcane magic to hide them on their flight from the public eye, making them pass like a billowing breeze around corners and down alleyways. Habit, perhaps? She did not know, but was satisfied with the understanding she was keeping a person dear to her heart safe.

Only once the press of living beings had lessened did Ariel slow. She released their cloaking, as well, if a bit wistfully. She had not been (or rather, had not truly tried) to use her divine powers since the ship had fled from her sight, and the feeling was not unlike coming home. It was only after a few moments, spent leisurely walking together in a more secluded grove, that Ariel remembered suddenly that she hadn't answered Prospera's question. "I am... Searching." The Goddess said softly, looking down at the other woman. She realized that their fingers were still intertwined, a dainty hand clutched within her own, and had to struggle to control her features. Such a familiar touch hadn't been allowed, even when they had been at their closest. And yet, she felt no desire to let go.

The world moved so strangely around them. It was like moving but not...although that didn't make much sense it was the best that Prospera's mind could do with whatever it was that Ariel was doing to move them from place to place so quickly.

When they finally stopped she looked around, wondering where exactly they'd come to a halt. Despite it feeling like they had run for many long miles, they were in fact not all that far from the palace, and while this area was secluded it was in fact a private garden set up by one of the wealthy families. At least they'd be safe here, and Ariel in her lack of knowledge of the city hadn't brought them to some unsavory corner. That could cause more problems and she was already...

Her guards would think Ariel had kidnapped her! The thought send a chill down her spine like ice! She ignored the goddesses answer, she would have time to soul search with her later, right now she had to stop her guards from calling down the might of the city on top of her companion's head!

"Ariel! You must take me to the palace at once! Those were my guards, the ones who protect me. Despite my efforts to have a day to myself, they must have followed me. They will not harm me, but you! They will think you have kidnapped me!" she looked up into Ariel's eyes coming around to face the other head on, and took her other hand in hers. "I did not free you only to have you imprisoned again, and this time it would be in stone!"

She shook her head. "I do not know what you are searching for, but I do not think it is a cell in the palace. Come we must hurry or else it will take more time than I would care to admit to make myself heard over the baaing of the sheep that call themselves my advisers."

Ariel's wings fluttered as Prospera spoke, instinctively tensing from the sharp tone the other woman used and preparing for punishment. In her mind, she almost wished for it - punishment would be preferable to the embarrassment she now felt. "Guards?" the Goddess inquired, tilting her head with a small unhappy frown marring her otherwise placid expression. Why was she so bothered to think Prospera's safety was now in the hands of others? She was no longer bound to her, and it would make absolute sense that a noble, even one as strong as her former Mistress, would require protection.

The Goddess suffered Prospera's lecture in humiliated, conflicted silence. ''What I am searching for'', she thought, disheartened and humbled, 'perhaps it is not meant to be found, but rather earned.' Ariel sighed unhappily, nodding to the mortal noble. "I am gratified by your concern for me, Mistr- Prospera." Ease with common names continued to allude her attempts of informality. (As though common mortal guards could shackle her! She would not be bound by mortal chains - only her Mistress or Master could contain her spirit!) "I admit my hastiness has caused some commotion, and would like to escort you back to the palace." Why did it sound like a formal missive instead of a request? She was not meant for this! (This cursed so-called 'freedom' was driving her mad!)

Prospera watched the Goddess closely, frowning just slightly as the other's body language went from tense to embarrassed, to submissive. The last she was very familiar with, it was the stance had often had with her during their previous contact. The old familiar roles, Ariel going so far as to nearly call her "mistress," caused her some distress. She had released the spirit, but perhaps old habits were harder to break than she'd thought. Was she still Ariel's mistress? No, at least she did not think of herself that way. Her rush to see the other had been more akin to...joy? Something that reminded her of simpler days, at the very least.

"Ariel..." she said gently, then sighed. There were many things they should say to each other, but right now was not the time. Later. "Yes, please take me, quickly or else there will be hell to pay if there isn't already." she said gently and patted the other's arm. "And then, we shall talk, yes? You can tell me of your adventures and I shall bore you with affairs of court and other matters." she smiled just a bit.

Ariel smiled weakly at her former mistresses words, nodding vaguely at the proffered offer of later. She could tell that Prospera was bothered by something - something having to do with her - and felt a flare of shame well within her. She shouldn't have let her own disappointment show so easily if it was only going to serve to depress Prospera! Still, her own beratement had to wait. Prospera's safety, as it had always been. was her top priority. "Understood. However, you will have to forgive me,", she said, looking out at the glittering building future down the lane, "I am unfamiliar with this city and will require guidance myself. I can regrettably only promise your safety... Prospera."

"I did not suspect your knowledge of the city would be great or even likely. You had only arrived, yes? At least i had not heard word of you being around prior to this, and the appearance of one such as yourself would most definitely have caused a stir." She offered the goddess a hand and once the other took it, she lead her companion to the gate that closed off the area from the street and began to lead her towards the palace.

"At least we shall not have far to walk." Prospera said glancing back at the other. "I believe it will be much easier to dissuade any who will think you a kidnapper, for why would you bring me closer to home if you meant to steal me away." she smiled just a touch and continued up the street, her posture straightening just slightly to a more regal composure. It wouldn't do to be seen skulking a long the streets, besides others would be more likely to look away if she appeared to know exactly what she was doing. In a way it was a strange sort of camouflage.

Ariel acknowledged Prospera's statement with a slight inclination of her head, a sheepish smile on her lips. "Your assumption is correct, as per usual. I was merely passing through and had stopped to rest in the main plaza for an hour or two." The Goddess jumped slightly when the other woman grasped her hand firmly, having only tentatively placed her own near the proffered on a split second before. She allowed herself to be lead, subtly glancing about to take in the scenery that had made up her former Mistress's beloved home.

Ariel noticed when Prospera shifted her posture, watching with great interest she went from being vaguely casual and content to strictly regal. 'The mask of nobility is a harsh one to bear - even for her.' she thought, heart pained. 'Won't you tell me, my little ruler, if this facade has become too tight? I would take you away from it in a heartbeat.' But she swallowed those words, leaden as they feel to her belly, for she knew Prospera was a stubborn one. Even if her life was not as she recalled or even had envisioned, she would not complain - for it was the life and country she had so long struggled to return to.

She nodded as she listened to Ariel. She longed to ask her of her travels but there was something much more pressing that needed to be handled before they could indulge in such idle chatter. She let herself slip into the mask that was her court face and carefully composed what she would say to her "flock." Careful tone, careful words, a cycle without end that gave her little rest. Had she known it would be like this upon her return? Yes and no. Ruling was always a complicated task, the simplest answer was rarely the right one and nothing could ever be solved to everyone's satisfaction. It was more trying to keep the unhappy party from being too unhappy. It was all a tightrope act. Let party one win one argument, let the loser from that win the next and perhaps even a second and on and on and on it went.

She'd been so caught up in her own thoughts she didn't realize that they were already approaching the gates around her palace. She let go of Ariel's hand and made for the guard house next to the gates, the individuals there already starting to swarm towards her and weapons pointed at the goddess.

"Hold!" her voice rang out clear and true and perhaps with just a touch of power behind it, whether it was magic or just sheer will it hardly mattered. "My dear friend has come to see me and though misunderstanding has found herself on the wrong side of the law. She did not kidnap me, nor does she wish any harm to my person or this city. You shall let her pass with me." she gave a look to everyone who met her eye and many looked away unable to hold her gaze.

Satisfied Prospera nodded and then looked back at Ariel. "Come, I shall order refreshment and we can sit on the terrace over looking the city. It shall be most pleasant I believe." she nodded her head firmly and then headed inside.
