As the fighting forces returned from Sauti, business had picked up – and the troupe decided to make the most of it by travelling into Oba. Their previous experimental jaunt into this territory seemed to prove that there was some considerable audience for their music, for although they played many traditional Matori songs they were inevitably all influenced by Oban styles and music. Besides, there were plenty of water earthlings in Oba who would spare them some money in return for some musical taste of their homeland.

So it was that their caravan – three wagons pulled by two quhar apiece – rolled into Sulburi. The troupe’s leaders, Oriole and Yano, had sufficient connections here to secure them a prize spot in the marketplace for the evening. This central location was a rare blessing for a Matori troupe, but simultaneously a bit of a curse… word of their arrival would spread quickly, and doubtless tonight would bring many curious onlookers in their direction. They would have to work quickly to be ready for a show.

Although Vodyanoi was now an official member of the troupe, with his own prized hand-drum and a spot in their assembly, he was still the youngest and least established – meaning that much of the hard work was still left on his shoulders.

Presently, he had been sent to fetch feed and water for the quhar – they were hungry beasts, but grazing-space and drinking water were in short supply in this crowded city. There was a well in the marketplace, of course, but this still left him having to drag buckets upon buckets of water back to their encircled caravan, pouring each one into a slowly-filling trough. He was only about halfway done by the time he started feeling dizzy from exhaustion and finally resorted to sitting on an upside-down bucket to take a bit of a break.

He missed the sea already! How nice it would have been to plunge in for a refreshing swim.

The fighting had be like nothing she had ever know. It was so sure real. So many bodies and everything was just crazy. Although she was able to do some damage, she also was pretty badly hurt herself. She had gotten hurt more then she had hurt the bad women, which made her unhappy. Part her wondered if the path that she walked was the path for her. It didn't seem like she was as good at it as she once assumed. However when she felt this way she reminded herself that she had only just started training, and that she wasn't ready for the war just yet. She would do better once she practiced and learned more.

She stayed with the main group heading back to Oba most of the time, occasionally wandering off and then rejoining the group. She decided she would spend some time in the cities before going to her mentors house. She wasn't eager to tell him that he had been right and she shouldn't have gone off to war just yet. She hoped that once she healed a little more he wouldn't be able to tell how badly she had been harmed in her attempt at war.

Sulburi was on her list of cities to stop at, and one of the reasons was that she had heard there was a troupe that was going to preform there. Dancing was something that she loved, and that she might have pursued if it wasn't for the way magic called to her, so if there was a troupe in two she was going to see it.

Walking around she spotted an water earthling sitting on a bucket. With a smile she walked towards him. "Hello there, you wouldn't happen be part of the troupe that is playing tonight would you?" it was rare to see a water earthling just sitting around, and if it was water earthlings that the troupe were made of that made her even more excited.

Vodyanoi had been splashing his face with well-water, still trying to get cool and dreaming of ocean waves. It was plenty hot in Matori, of course, but with the sea never too far off you were always guaranteed a nice breeze… or at least the promise of shade, if you sat down among the trees. Here in the wide square there was neither of those. Some of the vendors had cloth canopies shading their stalls, but those shadows did not extend very far past their wares, and the rest of the place was just baking like a hot clay brick.

He was just beginning to recover when a woman spoke to her. He looked up, a bit startled; he had seen her coming (she was the eye-catching sort) but had figured that she was making her way over to the well, and not to talk to… him, of all people.

“Well, hi.” He stood to talk to her; sitting on a bucket wasn’t exactly a dignified pose, and he found himself wanting to make a good impression. What kind of an impression should a musician make? Should he be friendly? Should he play it cool?

He settled for something just between the two, smiling an easy smile and keeping a hand on his hip. “I am. We’re just getting set up for a show tonight. Why d’you ask?”

She was an Oban, that much was evident – but somehow she didn’t intimidate him quite so much as others did. There was something familiar about her, but for the time-being Vodyanoi could not quite put his finger on it. It would probably have been obvious to some, but the features that marked her as part water were so common to him that he simply took them for granted.

“Are you looking for someone? Most of the others are over that way. Y’know, while I do all the hard work.”
