KD was nervous, if she was honest. She might be meeting his family and though that wasn’t a problem she was worried they were going to tease him or think she was not nearly as cool as Westley seemed to think she was. Why he thought that or how she found him, on accident, was just mind blowing to her. But she wasn’t about to waste her time worry about it for long. He wanted her to go riding around with him on his four by fours and she was up to it. Especially since she’d never been.

Still, she dressed in an outfit that was farm worthy, cute but not something she minded getting dirty in.

She was pacing in front of the front door, checking herself in the mirror every few seconds until her father asked her for God’s sake to please sit down. She did, but only because she didn’t want to put a hole in the carpet. They hadn’t had their date yet, that wasn’t until next week, but the fact that he might like her, like that, meant she needed to be careful and now had an edge of nervousness in her demeanor.

“Daddy, can you please go somewhere else? You were totally embarrassing last time!”

He sighed, but left the room so he wouldn’t get to “intimidate” her companion.

This was worrisome…

Quote:
Willie was excited for the day. KD was coming to the farm and going to ride with him. He couldn't help, but to wonder if she would like the experience. Most females didn’t. It was dusty and dangerous if one wasn’t careful. KD wasn't like other girls though. She seems happy to just be adventurous and branch out and do things. It made Willie always really excited to see her because he knew he would have a really good time when she was around

He pulled up to her house and headed up to the door knocking quickly. It was still kind of early because the farm was a little bit of a drive from the city, and he wanted to give them a good amount of time to have fun. He even checked to see which of his brothers would be around so he might make good on the go kart race.

He just knew this was going to be the best day.

Quote:
KD was excited and shifted from foot to foot until he knocked. Then she quickly checked her hair in the hall mirror and scrambled to the door while her father watched and shook his head from the hallway. She did not normally act this way about a boy. Very troubling…

“Hi Westley,” she greeted almost shyly as she pulled open the door. She was ready to go, thank goodness, and didn’t waste a lot of time getting her things so she could leave with him.

She smiled all the way to the farm, making small talk in the car about the weather, school, and other things. She might have been talking too much but was too excited to notice, happily chatting away about little things that she liked, noticed, wanted to do.

It was nice.

“So, gosh, who am I going to meet today? Not all of your brothers, I hope!”

Quote:
Willie enjoyed the drive and the small talk learning more about KD. Car rides were good for that sort of thing, they could chat about anything and nothing at all. It was awesome and he was happy to listen as he drove only adding things here and there. When they arrived he parked in the driveway and got out to open the door for KD.

He gave a chuckle and shook his head at her question, “probably most of them. Likely not Thomas because he’s married and he has a new baby. My little niece is so cute, but you will like meet the rest. They have to work the farm this morning. It’s what my family does. We have a pretty big farm. I get a free pass today though,” he said winking at KD. She was the reason why he didn’t have to help, but he of course wouldn't have minded. He still wouldn’t if KD wanted to help.

“Come, let’s head in. They are going to be headed out into the fields and pens soon, so we haven't got much time to mingle, but they’ll join us one by one when they are done and we can have the go cart races then.”

William lead the way up the porch, it was your typical farmhouse, with hanging plants lining the outer edges and a swing attached to the porch roof. The garden was meticulously managed and very colorful. Willie picked a flower for KD as he walked up and handed it to her. When reached the door her opened it right up, no key needed, it was rarely locked, “We’re here,” he called into the house.

Quote:
KD felt a little flush go through her. Was she ready to meet most of his family? Farm life was an entirely foreign concept to her. She could tell him all about the real estate market from helping her father but how to grow things? Good things? She had no clue. She was all thumbs when it came to gardening. Her mom enjoyed it, though, and was infinitely better at it than she was.

She walked up onto the porch marveling at everything around her. She blushed as he handed her the flower, holding to her nose and smiling into it as she inhaled the scent. She tucked it into her hair and followed him inside.

Timidly, she walked in after him, hesitating just inside the door. Her dad had met Westley, briefly, but that was not the same as being introduced to everybody. KD tried not to look nervous. She put a smile on her face, fighting nervous little butterflies, and grabbed his hand for reassurance. This was good. This was fun. Better to meet everyone now since she planned on spending more time with Westley in the future.

“Um, hi?”

Quote:
KD would be greeted to the image of Willie being hugged tightly and kissed on his cheek by his mother, who decided to be overly embarrassing, but he didn’t mind. “I missed you too mom,” he said laughing lightly.

She looked over to KD and smiled giving a tiny wave before opening her arms to the girl, “come come, let us give you a once over. You’re so lovely and going to go ride on those noisy toys the boys have. A brave girl.” She grinned at KD and shoo’d them both.

“Alright, into the kitchen you two. Get some the introductions, hopefully we can get through them without overwhelming you and then you to can run off and have some fun.”

Willie entered the kitchen first and the noise level increased immediately as his brothers greeted him, one of which was currently ruffling his hair while holding Willie in a headlock. Willie was laughing, “guys, yeah yeah. I’m back and you better get finished quickly so we can have a couple rounds of go kart racing.”

Willie’s mother walked in and shook her head, “Let him go Nick and help clean up. You all have work to do.”

Willie sort of grinned smugly and received a punch in the arm for it, but he still grinned anyway.

“So Willie,” Nick started, “You going to introduce us to you friend or you going to stand there grinning like an idiot.”

“Shove off, Claus,” Willie responded, but looked to KD anyway.

Quote:
“It’s nice to meet you Mrs. Adams.”

KD was pretty sure she needed to impress him mom and be polite to her the most. His brothers could take some ribbing, boys were like that, but with the motherly hug she got she was pretty sure she needed to treat his mom with the utmost respect. She returned the hug and nodded at the compliments, wondering just how brave she actually was for this.

She rounded the corner into the kitchen and was surprised by all the noise, watching helplessly as Willie was first headlocked and then teased by his older brothers. Being an only child, she was not used to that kind of play and lingered by the doorway.

But she couldn’t help but grin. It looked fun.

“I’m KD, um, Caydence.”

Whichever name they preferred was fine with her.

Quote:
Nick gave a wolf whistle which made his father smack him in the back of his head and his brother to break into laughter. Willie rolled his eyes and walked over to KD, “so this is my family, everyone but my oldest brother. He may be around later with his wife and my niece, but married life keeps him away some days. Anyway …”

He pointed his is mom, standing by the sink, dark blonde curls cut short around her face and the same hazel eyes as her son. “That’s my lovely mom, Laura. The red head idiot who whistled is my brother Nicholas.”

Nick gave a wave and told her to call him Nick. “Next to him with the strawberry blonde mohawk is Brandon, standing behind them is my father David. The blonde beside Brandon, is his twin Benjamin.” They all waved and said hello, Benjamin saying to call him Ben.

“Platinum blonde, blues eyes, stands out for lacking a tan is my brother Phillip.” Phillip glared at his brother and shook his head before greeting KD, saying to call him Phil. “Next to him is Jonathan, and Thomas is my oldest brother, but he’s not here.” Jonathan gave a wave and told her to call him John.

“And that’s everybody,” he said before leaning over and whispering, “they have the most interesting nicknames. Quite hilarious. I’ll tell you later.”

He grinned and glared at he started making stupid kissy noises, only to be scolded by their mother.

Quote:
“Oh, God, is there going to be a quiz on this?” she joked, feeling like she’d forgotten half of what she’d just been told.

She could recall a handful of names. She was pretty sure she was covered with his parents as Mr. or Mrs. Adams. As for his brothers? Oh, holy mother of God. KD smiled and tried to recount names, sure she would confuse them at least once during the day and probably get laughed at for it, which wasn’t a bad thing, necessarily.

She blushed furiously at the kissy noises considering they hadn’t actually kissed or anything yet. They hadn’t even officially gone on a date yet.

Not that she was against it if he tried…

“It’s really nice to meet you guys.”

She really hoped that she could remember a few of their names for faces later but that would just take time. She looked to Willie to save her, hoping they could meet the horses or cows or...something.

Quote:
Its was Laura, not Willie who saved KD sweeping around the table like an aproned warrior and shooing the boys, “Alright, enough is enough. You can chat more at lunch, up you get. Go on, there is work to be done. Feed the hens and the pigs, tend to the sheep and off to the field with you lot.”

She turned to KD and Willie and smiled, “it wonderful to have a guest about and always wonderful to have another lady. You to go have fun. I will call you in for lunch. Willie check on Caesar and make sure you go talk to Eliza’s mom about the summer, school is almost over, you’ll both soon be home for the summer.”

Willie nodded, “yes ma’am I will,” before he looked to KD. “Come I’ll introduce you to Caesar before we go riding.”

He grabbed KD’s hand and headed out the back door headed for the sheep pen where he knew Caesar would be sitting watch.

Quote:
KD was eternally grateful to Laura and smiled her thanks.

She listened to the rapid fire instructions and only caught a little bit of them, understanding very little. Who was Caesar? She assumed it was a dog but could not be sure. And his family raised sheep? How had she not known that? She nodded and kept his hand as he led her outside, happy to be in the fresh air again. Her body was actually perking up considerably, considering she was not usually an early riser on weekends.

“Who’s Eliza?”

KD let him lead her wherever, continuing to look around and try to memorize what was around her.

“And Caesar?”

KD decided that no matter what she did that day she was going to end up confused so she might as well get used to it now. Hopelessly so. The joys of learning about big families, she supposed. It was a nice thought.

Quote:
Willie grinned at KD, “remember the horse we rode when we first met, Odyssey, that’s Eliza’s horse. She’s my best friend. Has been forever, cept when I was being a dummy. She’s a sweetheart. I think you would like her. I can introduce you to one day. She’s my roommate, so if you come to my apartment, honestly chances are you will meet her. Anyway her mother is Mrs. Satchlyn and I work for her, because with 6 brothers I can spare my hands.”

He walked toward the sheeps pasture as he talked, stopping after a bit and putting to fingers in his mouth to whistle, “Caesar, here boy. I’ve got a new friend for you to meet.”

He looked to KD hearing a bark in reply and watching as Caesar appeared from somewhere behind the sheep, “that’s Caesar, my sheep dog. Eliza gave him to me, with the Shake and Park’s last litter. A present, that pleased my dad greatly. Shake and Park’s puppies are prized sheep dogs and go very quickly, sometimes before they are born.”

He gave a laugh as Caesar jumped right on knocking him over, “Hey buddy,” he said giving the dog a pat. “Let’s round up the sheep, eh, then we can go riding. What do you say?”

Caesar backed up sitting tail wagging excitedly, while Willie got up grinning at KD. “Want to help round up the sheep really quick?”

Quote:
“You live with a girl?”

She sounded unsure about that mostly because she still lived with her parents and went to high school, though, when she thought about it, she was pretty sure she could live with Arias because he was just like her brother and it wasn’t that bad. She had no romantic interest in him anymore and that had only been a passing infatuation when they first met. It was nothing like this.

“Maybe I can meet her someday.”

She was not a jealous girl and it faded as quickly as it came but for a moment it had been there.

When Caesar came bounding toward them she stooped with a large grin on her lips. She loved animals and treated the dog like she’d known it for years, greeting it with a smile and love talk, petting the sheep dog behind his ears and scritching beneath his collar. She was enchanted immediately.

“He’s so cute!”

She was more than willing to do any activity that involved him.

Quote:
He looked at KD and nodded, “yes , we’ve know each other forever. I use to play with her all the time when we were little. We pretty much grew up together. We both go to the same school, so its easier this way, especially since during the summer we come home. Its easier on our parents to split the rent.”

Willie grinned and nodded, “I’ll make sure to invite you over before we leave for the summer, and of course to the farm during summer break. If you don't meet her before school is up, then definitely during the summer.”

He looked to Caesar who waited patiently for his command wagging his tail about happily. He looked to KD, “Okay it simple commands and some hand movements if you need them, you likely won’t he’s well trained and has a good herding instinct.

“I want him to go around the sheep so im going to say,” he paused briefly, “Away.”

Caesar went right to work, and Willie looked to KD, “he’ll gather them quickly, then I want him to drive them back into the pasture with the wired fence on the outside,”

He look to Caesar, “in moment when he gets behind them call out Stop, then call out Walk up.”

Quote:
“That sounds nice.”

KD had friends growing up but she didn’t really have a best friend until Arias came along. Even now she had people she considered close, art friends and kids she knew from school, but for a best friend connection? Those were limited. She was seriously jealous of their shared apartment, though. All she could think about was an entire space to herself where she could do her art projects, littering the place with paints and clay and turning the walls into a KD original work of art.

As Willie explained she watched intently, her eyes trailing after Caesar as he did his herding job. In her world dogs were companions and playmates. It was novel and fun to see one with an actual job to do, like a seeing eye dog.

She waited until he’d done what she thought he was supposed to before she followed Willie’s instructions.

“Stop!” she cried out first, and then paused before she continued. “Walk up!”

Well, heck, if it was all this easy maybe she could be a farm girl after all.

Quote:
Willie couldn’t help but to grin as KD commanded Caesar and the dog followed quickly and easily driving the sheep, some strayed, but Willie was quick to correct that calling out, “Away to me!”

He watched as his dog went around the sheep and they were gathered back with the group, as Caesar moved back around he continue commands to get the sheep into the fenced pasture. It was obvious that they had quite a bit practice. He looked to KD, “he’s almost got them in, you can finish up. Just call out There, then Walk Up. Then once he gets all the sheep in say That’ll do and he’ll come back.”

He smiled and motioned for KD to go ahead and finish off, afterward they could head off to ride one on the four wheeler while Caesar probably chased them a bit like a silly puppy. This day was going very well so far and Willie could help but to be excited for what the rest of the day held.

Quote:
It was all actually really fascinating to KD. She watched the dog and how it was with the sheep, amazed that it knew all those commands. The sheep didn’t seem to be afraid of him, and he didn’t seem to make them move by being mean or anything. This was just how things were done.

“There!” She grinned. “Walk up!”

Once everything was done she pet Caesar, telling him what a good doggy he was and how cute he’d been. She could not help but think that there was sunshine inside of her, she was so happy. Everything was new and fun and exciting and she grabbed his hand and squeezed it, smiling at him.

“That is, like, the coolest thing,” she gushed. “This is so much fun, Westley, and you do this every day?”

Someday she’d have to show him her side of the ropes…

Quote:
Willie flushed slightly really happy KD was enjoying herself, “yes I do this and so much more. Growing up on a farm is really special and amazing. It’s not for everyone, but I definitely love it. I will be sad to leave it behind, but I want to be an engineer. The farm and farm life will always be here though.”

He gave her had a squeeze and gave his leg a pat calling Caesar to his side and turning toward where the needed to go next. “Alright, now time for a little fun, my style. We’re going to ride one other four wheelers for a bit then I think mom wants to picnic because we have peach trees and she thinks you might like to see them, then we can go cart.”

He moved toward the hand carved dirt fields and hill they maintained for the purpose of all their joyriding needs, After a few moment it wasn’t terrible hard to see and Caesar seemed to know exactly what was up, because he took off towards it. “Looks like someone is excited.”

He gave KD hand a tug and started running after his dog, laughing lightly feeling playful and just light hearted. This was the life. He ran all the way right up to the line of go carts, 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers and dirt bike, some new than other, many clear well loved.

“You ready for this?” He said while Caesar sat beside him excitedly wagging his tail.

Quote:
“Sounds like a fun way to grow up.”

She was happy to see his life, and imagined what it would have been like to do the same, living on a farm day to day. She didn’t mind her own upbringing. Her dad taught her a lot of his own life, his own passions, and so did her mom. They gave her a life where she could do the things she wanted to do and she could not wish for more than that. Really, she was very lucky.

And she felt it being here with him.

“Don’t tell my mom about the peach trees. She’ll be here all the time once they start bearing fruit.”

She grinned, remembering how much he liked the jarred peaches.

She laughed as Caesar ran, running after him. Her laughter trailed after her as she sprinted, coming up short at the line of 4 wheelers. She turned around and waited for him. When he came up, on impulse, she threw her arms around him and placed a big kiss on cheek. She was really pretty psyched.

KD moved toward the row and looked over the machines. They were all pretty to her.

Quote:
Willie could help but to grin and blush slightly at the big kiss on the cheek. This day was turning out to be really amazing and they had barely got started. He pulled keys from his pocket and fiddled with them for a moment before he found the right one and walked over to the blue and green three wheeler.

“This one is my favorite,” he said walking behind it to what looked like a shed of sorts, heading in and coming back out with two helmets. He handed one to KD before pulling a pair of gloved out of his own and putting both the gloved and the helmet on.

Once he was finished he grinned at Cesar who sat furiously waving his tail waiting for Willie to take off. He got onto the bike and patted the seat and smiled at KD. “Come on, make sure you hold one time, this thing can really get some speed on it and I certainly dont want you to fall off. We can go for a ride for a bit, maybe do a trick, then if you feel up to it, you can try by yourself.”

He started he three wheeler and revved the engine, he was ready to have some more fun, keep the day going full speed ahead.

Quote:
KD grinned, feeling an excitement bubble up in her belly. They just got along so well and though she was nervous about getting on the big machine he brought up but, honestly, she was excited to try it now when she saw how excited he was.

“It’s safe, right?”

She slipped the helmet over her head, looking dubious about his warning to hold on. Fall off? That would suck. She obediently got on the 4 wheeler and wrapped her arms around him from behind, holding onto him tightly. She wasn’t going to let go for anything and tensed in anticipation as he revved the engine.

“It’s ok, Westley. I’m ready.”

She’d give a shriek when he took off, bracing herself against him and resting her chin on his shoulder.

Quote:
Willie nodded when she asked it if was safe. It was as long as they wore helmet and were careful, he hadn't intended to do anything dangerous or do any crazy jumps. His mother would kill him if she found out he did that with KD on the back.

He did take off quickly though and Caesar shot of with him racing the 3 wheeler. He sped down the dirt part and around the outside of the dirt track that was a wide oval. He continued on, Caesar chasing after him and barking like crazy, making a few turns winding around mound of dirt the used for jumps but not going over them.

“Are you enjoying yourself,” he shouted of the noise of the bike, “Caesar certainly is.” He laughed light and wound back out to the dirt over taking the corner quickly and making the bike spin in a full circle before it stopped and Willie shot off again.

After a little bit he returned to the line of bike stopping and grinning back at KD, “Ready to try one?”

Quote:
KD felt the butterflies flutter around as he took her around the track, feeling like she was on a roller coaster. The only amusement park she’d ever been to was the circus across town owned by a guy named Chester. He had some thrill rides and they felt kind of like this. She was amazed that Caesar could keep up with them, and spared a glance at the pup as they passed.

“This is great!” she shouted back, trying to be loud enough to be heard over the roar of the engine.

She rode around with him for a while and felt a thrill. Once he brought them back she doubted her own abilities, not wanting to make a fool of herself in front of a guy, let’s face it, she really dug. But if he liked this and he wanted her to try it she would, trusting him to help her figure things out. She’d ridden a bike before but never a motorbike. Maybe it was similar.

“Sure, how do I do this?”

Quote:
Willie got off and motioned for KD to slid up, the point of the parts of the she needed to make it go. He warned her not to take the turns to fast or she might spin like he done on purpose. He also warned her not to go up any of the mounds because if she was going to fast that would cause her to jump.

He grinned and gave her a kiss on the cheek, light but still there. “You’ll be fine. You’ve got this. Youre a lady of adventure and I’ll be right with you. I can ride with one on the other 3 wheelers.”

He moved to get another bike ready, getting on and showing her really quickly again everything before telling her to take off. He hoped she’d start of slow not like he did, but even if she didn’t he be able to keep back and stay with her to make sure she was okay.

“Ready,” he asked, “lets hit it.”

Quote:
“Alright…”

KD paid good attention to what Westley was was telling her and thought she had the idea pretty well in hand by the time he was finished. She sat on the motorbike for a minute or two, trying to familiarize herself with what he’d described and visualizing how she was supposed to make this all work. She played for a minute, testing things, and then nodded at her companion.

“I’m ready!”

She took off a little faster than she intended, almost losing her balance before she slowed down, gripping the the handles tightly as she forced herself to breathe and relax. She made a slow trip down the track, avoiding the hills at all costs, and by the time she turned around she felt more comfortable.

When KD took of it gave Willie a bit of a start, but she didn’t fall off so he was relieved and quickly started another 3 wheeler and took off to catch up to her slowing down as she reached her. “You’re doing great, he shouted from behind her, but not too loudly not wanting to startle her.

Quote:
He pulled up beside her and kept pace, riding around the track with her and enjoying himself. He certain shortly one of his parents would show up and drag them off to lunch, it was getting later, the sun was pretty high and it was getting quite a bit warmer.

He really wanted to race, but figured it would be better to wait until after lunch in the go carts where he was sure KD would be far more comfortable. “How’s this for adventure? Beat horse back?”

Honestly he doubted it, but mostly because he adored Odysseus.

Quote:
She rode around with him, nodding when he encouraged her efforts. She thought she was starting to get a handle on things as she continued. She kept pace with him, trying to find a speed that was not too fast and not too slow. She used her own comfort as a judgment. The more she did it the more fun she had, laughing when she finally let herself try a burst of speed, taking off down a straight away before slowing to a stop.

KD waited for him, turning back.

“It’s so fun,” she gushed. “I never would have done this if you hadn’t brought it up.”

But, honestly, KD liked horses. She rode them at summer camp and appreciated that they were live animals, strong and noble. So no matter how fun this was she would probably always prefer horses.

“But I think I like Ody better.”

She grinned, looking cute and happy, her cheeks pink with excitement.

Quote:
He was really glad KD was having fun and that he got her to try this out. He really couldn’t wait for the go carts later when it was him and all his brother and they could race. He wondered who would win. He imagined it would like be one of his older brother’s but he hoped KD floored them. He would give them all smug grins.

He was surprised when she took off and grinned at her taking off after her and stop just short. “I’ve loved this pretty much all my life, but I definitely love riding Ody. In the summer we can definitely go to the Satchlyn farm and ride the horses more. Eliza will probably want to introduce you to all the animals though.”

He turned as his name was called and looked to see him mom waving to him. “Oh wow its lunch time. Time flew. Come on let's head off, we can pick some peaches for your mom before we all come back for go kart racing. It’s going to be a blast. First though, first, home grown farm cooking. I miss it so much when I’m not here.”

He held out a land to KD and called to him mom letting her know they were coming, “it's not far, just a short walk over towards where my mom is headed.”

Quote:
“Sounds like fun.”

KD was quickly coming to realize that she and Eliza would have to get to know each other and that was ok by her. She enjoyed making new friends and pretty much anyone that liked animals had to be a nice person. She didn’t know anyone that was good with animals that wasn’t good around people. Besides, if he liked her that had to mean she would, too.

She was startled when she heard his mother call them. She shaded her eyes and looked over to the house where they were being waved at.

“Oh, wow!”

Come to think of it now, the sun was a lot higher in the sky than it had been when they started. KD had hardly noticed the time passing while she was out there having fun. She hadn’t really stopped to think about how quickly the day was going or, as it turned out, how hungry she’d gotten.

“That sounds so yummy. Mom would like that.”

He was so sweet she almost didn’t understand how she’d lucked out so much.
