She had gotten out as soon as dinner was over - she couldn't take it any longer! She loved her grandmother, she was family, but her maternal grandmother didn't understand that Winterlynn didn't plan on getting married - ever. She didn't understand why such a pretty girl, with such lovely eyes, couldn't find a man. it wasn't that she couldn't, she'd had plenty of people make passes at her. The problem was her lack of interest; in all of them. She didn't know why, she knew it wasn't that she didn't trust them...at least not more than any other person, it was just a lack of physical attraction and a disinterest in wanting to get close to them in such a manner.

Shaking her head, dark hair swaying behind her, she ran her fingers through her bangs as she walked herself home. She could have taken a cab, or a bus or even the subway, but she wasn't interested in making her travel home quick. She needed the time to calm down, her grandmother had really pushed it over the dinner table. She'd been questioned about so many things that she'd wanted to leave half way through the meal but hadn't simply due to respect and politeness.

"Why can she never leave it alone. I love her but she can't leave it be." The words weren't spoken in English, or even accented English, but as she rounded the corner onto the main road she was speaking aloud to herself in Russian. It was something she often did when talking to herself, or when she didn't want someone understanding what she said. How many people spoke Russian in this city? This wasn't a small city, not by any means, but Spanish was the most common language aside from English for people to speak. Russian was an odd one and thus it was safer in her opinion.

"Maybe grandfather will speak with her." Again. Always the questions and always someone would talk to her grandmother, typically her grandfather or sometimes her father or uncle. Her cousins, most of whom were around her age, would roll their eyes. They weren't as old fashioned as her grandmother was but even some of them wondered why she wasn't dating and hadn't thus far. She honestly had no answer, she'd never thought of it or even cared to think about it. She knew it was odd, without a doubt, but she lacked an interest altogether.

"This is frustrating." Sighing heavily she continued down the road, heels clicking on the ground, as she continued on the long trek home.

Iouri was out walking Laika - or, more accurately, Laika was out walking him. She wasn't a large enough dog to really pull him, but Iouri was not in the business of dragging her places she didn't want to go. That usually ended badly, with old ladies cupping their mouths to whisper, that poor dog.

How scandalizing.

Up ahead, a young woman turned the corner, heels clicking fast against the concrete. Laika pulled harder on her leash - something about this stranger had struck her interest especially hard. Iouri tried his best to rein her in, and all that did was leave the dog standing nearly upright, balanced on her hind legs, suspended by her harness, barking.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," said Iouri, as the young woman approached. "She's friendly. Please don't be scared. Laika, Будь спокоен!"

Sleet Tempest Snape
Google translate says that means "Be quiet!"

She had noted the dog and the fact the dog was suddenly pulling at her harness. Winterlynn had never seen a dog pull hard enough, and the owner be able to keep from being dragged, to the point of the dog standing on their back legs and standing upright -until now.

Approaching she held up a hand, suddenly forgetting her issues for the moment. "It's ok." She had heard the Russian then and was surprised. "Все нормально, она взволнована." She said in return while being careful in her approach and holding a hand out toward the dog, silent offering for the dog to sniff her hand and perhaps calm down.

"Все нормально, успокойтесь. Никакая потребность тянуть" She had lowered her voice in the hopes of calming the dog down, keeping her from straining so hard against her harness.

1. It's ok, she's excited.
2.It's ok, calm down. No need to pull

Laika, very pleased that this nice new lady had gotten close, stopped barking and began to very intensely sniff her hand, all the while balancing her feet on the woman's leg and... bouncing a little. Iouri chucked, letting out some slack on the leash. "Ты русская?" he asked. It was always a welcome surprised to meet someone else who spoke his native tongue - and with such a pleasant accent. Aleksy wouldn't make fun of her in the slightest, he thought.

"Меня зовут Юрий," he said, "и мой друг Лайка."

Laika was currently very excitedly pawing at the woman's knee and lapping up every last ounce of attention she could get. Iouri sighed - anyone would think that his dog was utterly neglected at home.

"Просто так сказать, если она начинает раздражать вас," he said.

Laika began to whimper. Such a poor, neglected dog, she was. Starved for attention and affection. Feasting after famine.

"Лайка, вы обжора," said Iouri.

Letting her hand be sniffed, and even moving closer in order to pt the dogs head, she watched the little dog bounce on her feet and balance on her leg. A very adorable dog really. "Я, Winterlynn Leshcheva." Offering a free hand to the other to shake. Aside from her family she had not met another who spoke Russian, much less someone who was Russian.

With the excited dog so happy to meet her Winterlynn knelt down in order to be closer to Laika's level and continued to pet the friendly, overly friendly, dog.

"Это - очень приятно Iouri, и Вы также Laika." She answered, looking up at the brunette with a small smile coming to settle upon her fine features.

Laughing as Iouri called his dog a glutton she smiled between the two just a bit more.

"Все собаки как внимание и - обжоры для этого." She may not have ever had a dog but she knew plenty of people who did and had seen plenty of people walking their dogs around the city. They all seemed to want as much attention as they could get, they all seemed to never get enough attention from owners and strangers alike.

Silverah

1. I am, Winterlynn Leshcheva
2. It's nice to meet you Iouri, and you too Laika
3. All dogs like attention and are gluttons for it.

Laika seemed to be calming down slightly - or, at least, all four of her feet had returned to the ground. She was still weaving circles around Winterlynn, which required a bit of agility on Iouri's behalf to keep her leash from becoming tangled. "Откуда ты?" he asked, trying to continue the small talk even as he bobbed and weaved to keep up with his dog.

"Я переехал сюда из Санкт-Петербурга, как ребенок," he added, passing the leash between his hands. Laika was doing an incredibly good job of getting tangled and he was trying his best not to invade Winterlynn's personal bubble.

"Я прошу прощения снова для моей собаки," he said in exasperation. "Лайка, каблук."

Sleet Tempest Snape
1. Where are you from?

"Я - отсюда. Мой familyhowever, является из Москвы." She answered while turning around and twisting a bit to help Iouri with his dog, who was weaving about her form. She was afraid of the dog tangling her up or Iouri tripping or becoming tangled himself. It seemed his dog was still excited, just not as much as moments before. Hopefully sh would do them both a favor and calm down even further, in time of course.

"Я имел обыкновение посещать все время. Остальная часть моей семьи недавно двигалась сюда." It was no small family, but it wasn't massive either. She knew that in time that her cousins would settle down (at least some of them) and have children and the family would expand further. She expected that to happen and it didn't bother her much. Though she felt for them a bit, they wouldn't be growing up where there parents had but they'd hear all about it. Right now she was certain there would be no family trips back home either, not with what was going on in Russia. There was too much negative in her families opinion.

"Это прекрасно. Собаки будут собаками." Holding up a hand and giving it a dismissive wave as she spoke. She was smiling now at them both. He seemed worried about his dogs behavior, perhaps too much.

"Я только был к Санкт-Петербургу дважды. Я провел большинство моих посещений детства в Москве. Вы посещаете Санкт-Петербург?" She asked then, curious as to whether he still returned to his home country and what it was like. She had only gone twice and she'd been much younger both times. Her memories were good, she had a good memory, but that didn't mean she'd seen nearly all of the city like she wished she could have back then.

Watching the dog she smiled a bit more, wondering if perhaps finding some place to sit might help the situation they were in right now.

Silverah
1. I'm from here. My family however, is from Moscow.
2. I used to visit all the time. The rest of my family recently moved here.
3. It's fine. Dogs will be dogs.
4. I've only been to St. Petersburg twice. I spent most of my childhood visits in Moscow. Do you visit St. Petersburg?

Iouri finally succeeded in getting Laika free of Winterlynn's legs, and the dog flopped down onto the pavement between them, panting like she'd just run a mile. "королева драмы," Iouri scolded her, and Laika rolled onto her back, legs waving lazily in the air. Iouri sighed. "По крайней мере, она отказалась от ваших ног."

"Я вернулся на некоторое время в аспирантуре," he answered, looking up from his dog. If Laika was going to be a drama queen, then he was going to ignore her. "Моя семья не оставил в лучших условиях, таким образом, мы не вернемся в течение длительного времени."

"В любом случае, пожалуйста, позвольте мне дать вам мою карточку," he added with a slight laugh. Iouri produced a business card from his wallet and held it out to her.

Iouri Spektor, Ph.D.
Director, Destiny City Earth and Space Museum

Sleet Tempest Snape
1. Drama queen.
2. At least she's given up on your legs.
3. I went back for a time in graduate school.
4. My family did not leave under the best circumstances, so we did not go back for a long time.
5. Anyway, please allow me to give you my card.

Watching the dog flop onto the ground and roll onto her back, legs waving in the air, she couldn't help shaking her head and laughing. So typical and yet very amusing and cute. Dogs were always cute and seemed to often provide amusement and laughter. "Думает, что она - принцесса?" She asked nodding down to the dog.

"Для чего Вы шли в школу?" She asked for while kneeling down to rub the dogs stomach. The dog did seem like she could use some water soon, she'd also likely be tired when she got home with her owner. "Это прекрасно. Я рад, что она остановилась, но собаки походят на это." Again dismissive of the dogs actions, it did seem normal for dogs to behave in such a way.

Ah, so his family had perhaps left like her own had? Her family hadn't really been in trouble but they had left because of things going on in mother Russia. they weren't going to be returning home, even for a vacation, for a good while and she knew it. It also meant she would have to deal with her grandmother for a lot longer, she was sure her grandmother would live a good long life (not that she'd wish otherwise on her). "Моя семья только уехала, поскольку я сказал, из-за того, что продолжилось в России."

Surprised by the card she took the offered card and looked it over. "Спасибо, я не имею никакой карты, чтобы дать Вам взамен. Вы - доктор .. место. Так астрономия?" She asked before looking back up at him. She had been interested in all the space pictures which had hung from the walls all up and down the science wing. She had spent a good deal of time in classrooms down that wing herself, and still did, as some of her classes did bring her down that way. "Я - специализация в gemology."

Silverah
1. Thinks she's a princess?
2. What did you go to school for?
3. It's fine. I'm glad she stopped but dogs are like that.
4. My family just left, as I said, due to what has been going on in Russia.
5. Thank you, I have no card to give you in return. You're a doctor..space. So astronomy?
6. I'm majoring in gemology.

"Это моя вина. Я испортил ее гнилой, как щенка," sighed Iouri. Laika squirmed happily under Winterlynn's touch, her right leg pumping. "Ah," Iouri editorialized in English. "You found her spot."

"Я изучал музейные науки ... значит, музей," he continued. "Я знаю немного обо всем."

At mention of her major, Iouri's eyes lit up. "Вы должны прийти посмотреть коллекцию минералов," he said. "У нас есть много редких камней. Я думаю, что вы найдете это интересным."

Sleet Tempest Snape
1. It's my fault. I spoiled her rotten as a puppy.
2. I studied museum sciences... hence, the museum.
3. I know a little bit about everything.
4. You should come see the mineral collection.
5. We have many rare stones. I think you'll find it interesting.

Again she waved a dismissive hand as she spoke. "Я думаю, что каждый делает это. Это - как мы." And it was true. Puppies seemed to just have their owners wrapped about their fingers. It seemed like a normal thing for dogs, at least in this country, to be spoiled...though also trained, by their owners. Nope, she saw nothing really wrong with the dogs behavior.

"It would seem I did." When he shifted in language she did as well and smiled. "She's easy to please." And wasn't slobbering on her, which was a plus. That was one thing she wasn't a fan of - being covered in slobber from dogs and drool.

Raising a brow she turned her gaze up to her fellow Russian and gave a ever so slight tilt to her head. "Немного обо всем, действительно? Это кажется твердым достигнуть, данный, о скольких вещи там должны знать немного в мире."

"Я уверен, что я мог сказать Вам вещи, Вы не будете знать, что Вы не верили бы." Came the counter from the dark haired girl. She was of course thinking about space, thinking of Delphi and Polaris. She could never take someone else there though - could she? Some normal civilian...and how to even know if someone was a normal civilian without risking herself? She had thought about that in the past but not as much as she had been recently. Her family she couldn't even tell without a risk to herself and that did bother her some, not that she thought they'd like the idea very much anyway.

"Вы? Я должен буду приехать к тому времени, чтобы видеть их. Я признаю, что я люблю те, которые могут использоваться в драгоценностях немного больше чем остальные." Since it dealt more with the reason for her major and her job choice. it was also why she'd gotten into the field. She had been fascinated as a child by gemstones and the shine, their brightness, and it had gone from there. She had been hooked and wanted to be around gemstones, even if she couldn't afford them, so she'd pursued it.

Silverah
1. I think everyone does that. It's how we are.
2. A little bit about everything, really? That seems hard to achieve, given how many things there are to know a little about in the world.
3. I'm sure I could tell you things you wouldn't know, that you wouldn't believe.
4. Do you? I'll have to come by then to see them. I will admit that I like the ones which can be used in jewelry a bit more than the rest.

Iouri frowned, not happy to be challenged on his description of museum sciences. "Ну, немного более конкретными понемногу..." he conceded, but still liked to think that he was very well educated. All the letters after his name certainly implied such.

He raised an eyebrow at her suggestion - there were certain things that had been implied to Iouri about space that he thought he was safer not knowing. If Winterlynn had a side in this war, he didn't want to know which one it was. "Возможно, есть вещи, которые я предпочитаю не знать," he said. "Это звучит ненаучно меня, но они пытаются раз."

There were whales on Saturn. He did not want to know more than that. It would only get him into trouble.

"Я думаю, что вы будете удовлетворены коллекции," he added. "Между тем, Лайка, и я должен закончить нашу прогулку, прежде чем она хорошо и по-настоящему темно."

Sleet Tempest Snape
1. Well, a slightly more specific little bit of everything...
2. Perhaps there are things that I prefer not to know.
3. It sounds unscientific of me, but these are trying times.
4. I think you'll be satisfied by the collection.
5. Meanwhile, Laika and I should finish our walk before it is well and truly dark.

"Да, и я не подразумевал никакого преступления. Есть просто много, чтобы знать там." Normally she wouldn't care if she'd offended someone but this was someone else from Russia, someone who spoke her language. That was something she could appreciate and didn't want to lose.

"Я действительно имею некоторый персонал, на собственном опыте, знанием о нескольких вещах, которые больше всего были бы неспособными знать. Некоторые вещи просто нельзя объяснить наукой, я узнал это со временем. Урок, извлеченный опытом." Maybe one day, if she learned he wasn't involved in this war she would show him...eventually perhaps. Could she trust him though? Did she trust anyone though? Nope. But maybe if he wasn't involved she would bring him anyway, she should be able to - right?

"Я думаю, что я буду также. Я думаю ... вовремя, Вы могли бы любить видеть то, что я могу показать Вам также." Yes, in time she would bring him. She just had to find out what side he was on if he was involved. How to go about doing so though? She could risk it and be up front...but not tonight, not here.

"Да, это не безопасно ночью в этом городе. Вы два должны получить движение и быть безопасными. Мы будем говорить снова скоро." They would talk again, she would visit and see his collection of minerals. She was interested in that and getting to know him as well. She wanted to share this with someone who would appreciate it, she couldn't tell her family, and as much as she was normally a very anti social person she was also very proud of her wonder. She just needed to clean it - a lot. But he would appreciate it in a way her family would not and that most would not. A quick smile and she turned to head back on her way. Was this going to turn into something of a friendship? It was interesting to be certain.

Silverah

1. Yes, and I did not mean any offence. There is simply a lot to know out there.
2. I do have some personal, first hand, knowledge about a few things which most would be unable to know. Some things simply cannot be explained by science, I have learned this over time. A lesson learned by experience.
3. I think I will be also. I think...in time you might like to see what I can show you as well.
4. Yes, it isn't safe at night in this city. You two should get going and be safe. We will talk again soon.
