Kostya's duty partner was a loquacious, invasively curious Sun trainee, nearly fresh out of the pod. She was chipper and excited with each new duty, each telling of old missions, each description of one strange monster after another. She was in the middle of coaxing Konstantin Bashmet into showing her his secret scars (he had to have at least one, gosh!) when the texts came. Lurks Beneath Text from Edith: Lock down the portals. Don't let anyone through.

Had he been himself, Kostya might have indulged her. His weakness for talkative, curious women could be traced back to a singular source. Had he been himself, Kostya would have at least proven to her that he had no scars anywhere decent. But he was not. A blip from his phone alerted him to a new message. He schooled himself to think of nothing, not of names forbidden, of a girl in a cave very far away, or anything else. Instead, easy as you please, he responded to the text. It was redundant with his own plans, anyway. Kostya turned his eyes towards the door and did what he'd been doing for some time now: He waited.

Lawrence had no reason to doubt America's advice when it arrived and he had gathered his possessions and set out immediately to get off the island before whatever was set to happen actually occurred.
When he arrived he glanced at Kostya and the girl with him blankly and smiled sweetly. "Set us up a portal would you pardner?" He even gave Kostya a saucy wink for his trouble.

Melvin hadn't expected a text from Jan that he wanted to take leave today and just wanted off the island. Not one to question Jan when he was giving him personal time alone (something hat had been limited with America living with them), he left the labs and packed with Jan for a nice getaway.
He stood with the blonde and smiled, glad to leave for a nice few days away.

Kostya didn't react to the wink, and raised his hand to lay a hand on the Sun trainee who might oblige the pair of them. He gave her a look. Turning to Lawr and Melvin, Kostya merely shook his head. "No. At this time, no one is permit to leave island. You may reschedule at later time."

"'fraid I'm gonna have to argue with you on that one pardner." Lawr said with the same smile, which did not reach his eyes. "I insist."
He shot Melvin a look, he had stressed to the other man this might well be a matter of life or death, and he intended to leave one way or the other. "Now if y'all'd just turn the other cheek, we'll be out of yer hair before you know it."

Melvin looked at Jan, confused as to the warning before they left but moving to position himself more in front of Jan in case anything happened. "We have leave. We need to get off the island. Why can't we go?"

"Argue imply it is possible to change my mind." Kostya would not be swayed, and certainly not for Lawrence <******** Weiman, nor his accompaniment. "Order comes from lead. No one may leave island at this time. It is not personal." He pushed his glasses up his nose, thinking of static and its patterns. "Apologies."

"Well well well now." Lawr said and paced a line behind Melvin (his hero), eyeing Kostya like an animal eyeing prey. "That there lead ain't here right now, and come what might be coming, they might not be here at all. I have leave, Russki, I have places to be, people to see. Melvin and I are busy men. Just leave it alone. Go make yourself useful for once in your life, lets not have this rule following falsity when you are anything but good. I'll make it worth the time of both you and your little girlfriend, maybe I can even save America this way."
He smiled, but it was edged with very final impatient, he did not like anything standing in his way.
"Its important and I won't ask again, m'afraid."

The dagger would slide into Melvin's side with such quiet precision and ease, he wouldn't realized what had happened until he hit the ground, his side wet with blood. Standing over the Life hunter was Leona Tavish, her gaze leveled at Kostya. "You had one job, Bashmet."

He felt a slight hitch and then everything slanted as he dropped, head cracking against the tile floor as he dropped with a heavy tumbling of limbs, his luggage to his side topping over. Horizontal, he was left groggily wondering through the blacks and lights in his vision what had happened and why he had fainted, and as he tried to dig his legs up and push himself, they kicked back out the moment he felt pain.
Gripping his side, he felt hot blood, and he was left dazed as he looked down. How did a weapon so easily come out and break through his shield? Why was he even stabbed? Had he - actually been stabbed right here and now? But - they were in the lighthouse. They were surronded by hunters. This - wasn't right.
.......prince of a thousand enemies....
Panting, he glanced up at the woman he did not know holding the now bloody knife with the same shocked disbelief as a child looking at a mascot that took off tehir costume's head. She spoke to Jan, close beside him, now without his very weak and brittle human shield, and a wave of panic rushed through him. Him next. They were going ot take them away from Melvin. From their world.
He weakly summoned Saliva into his slick fingers.
"Jan.......get out." He pointed Saliva at the woman with the dagger, ready to fire.

Leona was hit full on by the blast and staggered back, when she gazes at Melvin it was with black eyes and dark crystals creeping along her blade. "Bashmet, kill Weiman and open the portal," she ordered sharply as she noted the blue crystals forming over Melvin's weapons. Wariness entered the girl's posture. A sense of power and purpose would begin to fill the Russian for the first time in a very long time. Black crystals began to form along his arm.

Kostya did not cower or back down. Even at the use of America's name-- a tactic and a ploy, one that would not be heeded-- Kostya remained calm. Mild, even. Lawr thought himself to be an unstoppable force, Kostya knew himself to be an immovable object. It was a paradox. "There is a lockdown. You are not permitted. I will not open a portal--" Melvin's body dropped, and Syntax was summoned, eyes sliding over to Leona, who had staggered back from a blast. White noise in his head, teeth grinding, so hard they felt as though they might crack. The power filtered in again, and it was, what, the third? Fourth time? A channeling that was so hard to resist, tapping into Kostya's innate self. His desire to serve, to bend the knee for a force greater than he. And it was strong, like a coiling snake around his mind, cold and obsidian and relentless. It was revenge he wanted. The barrel of Kostya's weapon turned from Leona to Lawr, and a thin sheen of sweat broke out against his temple. The black crystals formed beneath Syntax, all the way up his elbow and a bit further still: and it was almost a relief. A physical manifestation of the things that had plagued him for so long, for days and months and almost years. "I vill do my job," he snarled, shaking from exertion. Kostya felt the ache of exhaustion down to his marrow, worn out and tired of fighting something in his own head. In a restless, jerking movement, the Russian turned the barrel of the gun to Leona and fired. " And protect my home." dmg: 12 to leona charge: 1/3

Lawrence raised his brow as Melvin went down and there was a moment where he re-assessed the situation. Kostya was still in his way, he still wanted to get off of the island. He could help but that would put him in firing range and those crystals, well, those crystals did not look like much fun frankly.
He had made Melvin a little old promise hadn't he?
While the others had their standoff, he moved in the direction of the portal mechanism.
