The battle was over. The extremists were banished. It had begun in one feverish rise of action and then it was interrupted and scattered. As of the moment there was no war, but Nyiim doubted that Alkidikes would take very kindly to exile. There had come a little distraction, though. Niadra seemed... different. Wary. He wasn't sure what to think. The young woman had left him rather suddenly while she was staying in his home, drawing into question their friendship, his feelings. It had been a cause of unusual emotional turmoil.

He'd found her, though, helping out in the healing tents. He'd met her hybrid friend. There had been no real words exchanged, though. Nyiim wasn't generally the type to bring up possibly upsetting conversations but this was one he just couldn't let lie. Niadra was his best friend, or at least he'd thought she was. On any other day he might have just thrown his arms around her, but things were bizarrely tense. He offered the young woman a smile that fled rather quickly and began to walk beside her. "Hello again." It was all he could think to offer.

It was familiar and comforting and at the same time terribly sad. Bosede followed just behind, loyally watching their surroundings for more danger.

Seeing Nyiim shocked her. She wasn't sure why, she should have known that he would go and fight. Still, with all those people around she didn't think that she would see him. However they didn't say much when they did see each other, which was to be expected. But it meant that Niadra didn't know how he felt. Was he mad at her? Did he not care? Did he move on with his life? She hadn't, not really. The feelings she had for him were just hidden under doubt and worry. Feelings that Niadra wasn't use to feeling. That was why she fled.

However she knew they would see each other on their return home, and when she saw Jania's tail wagging she knew that Nyiim and Bosede had to be close by. Sure enough soon he was walking besides her, speaking. At his hello she smiled, a small and uneasy smile. This wasn't how they were, it never had been. "Hello... I'm glad to see you weren't hurt too badly." That was a good starting point.

Bosede showed interest without the uncertainty of his Earthling companions. He trotted over to Niadra, tail wagging, and licked her hand. He looked up at her expectantly to be pet, but something else caught his nose. He sniffed the air and turned. Jania! His tail began wagging once more and he changed tacts, going now to sniff an old friend. He was used to Niadra coming and going, but Jania was newer!

Nyiim looked down over himself, at the dirt and the bits of blood and the bandages around his arm. No, he wasn't badly hurt. Some damage had been done but he was walking on his own two feet. They had won, that was good. The exile... perhaps not quite to his taste, but at least for the time being there would be no war.

"Yes." It hurt a little more to realize Nyiim had lately been able to treat strangers with more familiarity than he was with Niadra, his best friend, the subject of a great deal of his thoughts. His brows furrowed as he looked down to her. He couldn't do it like this.

"I've missed you, Niadra."

When Bosede came to her hand she scratched behind his ear for a second, though it was obvious that he was distracted by Jania soon after. Jania sniffed him back, her tail wagging excitedly. This was her friend!

She didn't look at him as they walked, instead looking forward. His one word sentence cut her, but she didn't know what to do about it. She didn't know what to say, or if there was anything she could say, to make the whole thing better. Could she make it better? What she had done was unforgivable. Right?

However when he said that he missed her she looked up at him, meeting his eyes for the first time. She held them for a few seconds before looking back ahead of them and then at the floor. "I've missed you too..." she was scared of what would happen next. Would he tell her that he still didn't want to be her friend again? No that wouldn't make sense, if he didn't want to talk to her he wouldn't be doing so.

She wouldn't look at him. That was what hurt the most. Nyiim's brows furrowed and he frowned. Was it him? Had he done something? The hunter was self-aware enough to know that he was not the most socially apt or warm but it had never been a problem before, so what had changed?

When their gazes finally met his she would undoubtedly see the sadness in his expression. His eyes flickered over hers, trying to read them, and then Niadra stared forward again. By the spirits, what had he done? One of them posed a sentence, the other replied, and the conversation ended. It was odd and stilted. Really he'd have preferred a hug.

"Is it something I did?" he asked. "Please look at me. Can we stop and talk?" He reached out and touched her arm, wanting the woman to at least give him some time. The crowd could move on without them. They would be easily found again. He needed answers.

When he touched her arm it shocked her, electricity flowing from his body into her. However it was his words that stung her. How could he think that? How could he think that it was him? That he did anything wrong? Oh how stupid she had been, how wrong. To make him think this whole time that he had done something wrong when he had been nothing but perfect as always.

She stopped and the people kept walking right around them. Soon it was just the two of them, the others far enough from them that they wouldn't hear. For a second she mused about how easily they had been left, forgotten by their peers, but then she remembered that there were more important things at hand.

"Nyiim you didn't do anything wrong. You were absolutely perfect..." she took a deep breath, meeting his eyes with her own. "It was me. I was just scared... I know it's childish and I'm sorry. But don't think it was your fault, it was all mine and I'm sorry that I ruined something so special..."

Her response was... unusual, to say the least. Not long ago he would have flung his arms around her in greeting and now her eyes looked like her soul was crying. It was difficult to fathom what had possibly happened had it not been for him.

Of course Nyiim had known something was wrong at the time. His best friend had left without warning, never having asked him again if he'd like to come with her. She had every time before, but not the last. It had dashed something out of him. He had been more antisocial than usual for a while, spending a lot of time wandering rather than daring to just sit and think. Life went on, though. It had to. It hadn't really changed from when they were younger, not except for the plans he had had. Maybe they were foolish anyway, if Niadra was saying she had ruined something. Maybe they weren't friends any more. He certainly had no idea how to act around her any more, but at least she had stopped.

"Scared?" he asked, brows furrowed, "Scared of what? What did you ruin?" Because she couldn't have known his plans.

She frowned. She didn't know how to say this, how to say any of this. The way he made it seem as if he didn't know? Maybe there was never anything more then a friendship between them... If that was the case then she didn't have to run away. If they were just friends, and were never going to be more, then she was just stupid the whole time. What if the whole thing was imagined in her head. Now she was confused as well as ashamed.

"Scared of us. I thought... I don't know, I thought that this time was different. We were different. And I was scared, and then I ran and I ruined whatever it was that was there. Or at least I thought I did, maybe there was nothing there and I was just confused though..." Oh this was just too much. Now she wished that she had just kept walking. This conversation was getting strange.

The hunter's mouth and law worked in thought. So he had been right. There had been something else between them. He remembered his trek out to find the great beast and how often Niadra had crossed his mind. He had felt that odd sort of warm thrumming in his chest and wanted desperately to be near here, and then she had fled. But had it been just him?

"Oh." Words were failing him at the moment, regardless of how much he practiced conversation nowadays. "Why were you afraid?" He hadn't been afraid at all, but now he wasn't so sure. Were they even still friends? Nyiim thought they certainly were but Niadra was acting just as oddly as his usual fumbling self. "I do... think we were... different." At least they could agree there. Then he had an inkling.

"Is there someone else?" Funny. the thought actually hurt now where before he had only hoped for Niadra's happiness.

Okay so she hadn't imagined things between them. That was good, or maybe that was worse? She wasn't sure, she wasn't sure if running from nothing was better then running from something or not. Both sucked though, and both were wrong.

She shrugged. "I was just afraid... Of change I guess. Of not being able to adapt to it. Or of me liking the change too much and then having it taken away. I'm not sure though, just afraid." ah she had never been tongue tied. She normally was pretty good at knowing what to say, even if she rambled it...

When he asked if there was any one else she shook her head, eyes wide. "No!" she had never even looked at someone the way that she looked at Nyiim. "No, there wasn't anyone else. The only person in the way was me. I was my own problem." she said frowning.

It all seemed very silly. Niadra wasn't sure what she had been afraid of, only that she had been afraid. Their 'being different' was somehow frightening when he was sure they had both gone into it with some sort of excitement. So there wasn't someone else. Yes, Nyiim thought, Niadra was right. It had only been a problem in her.

Rather than offer words, which had been failing him now for a good few minutes, Nyiim turned and wrapped his arms around Niadra in their usual fashion. If there was no one else, if it had just been fear, why not? She was still his best friend, sudden disappearance aside.

"Hello again, Ni'. I missed you."

She was about to speak again when all of a sudden Nyiim wrapped his arms around her and she melted into him in the ways that she had been doing her whole life. Before any problems had started. Before she had ruined it all. This was what things should have been like, had she not gone and run away.

She stayed like that speechless for a long second before pulling back a little, not quite leaving his arms but making it so that she could look up at him. "I've missed you so Nyi. So much. Is there anyway we can forget it all?" she didn't think it was possible but she hoped so.

The hug was pleasant enough. Nyiim could have stood there for hours, he was sure. In the wake of so much suffering and blood it was a welcome gesture. He was lost for a time, and then Niadra leaned back slightly and he mimed her to catch her eyes.

Could they forget it all? She wanted to, obviously. She had run scared, and he had continued to think of her. Why couldn't they? He'd never been one to hold a grudge. There was a little twitch in his chest and chin, but it disappeared as quickly as it had occurred and Nyiim settled back into his posture.

Should he? It was an urge, not a move of instincts. Usually he tried to avoid those. They were irrational. There was a chance of negative repercussions.

Ah, to heck with it. The twitch reoccurred and then followed through as Nyiim bent low and touched his lips to Niadra's. It was just brief, unsure. He had never kissed anyone before. She had every right to smack him if she disapproved. For once his stoic expression had broken and further than a simple smile. The Leaf man's brows were furrowed and he was clearly curious as to where any of this may lead.

She waited, waited for him to tell her that too long had passed. To tell her that although he wanted to be her friend again, because she was sure that was what the hug meant, he didn't want any more to do with her. She was sure he was going to tell her that he wouldn't trust her anymore, that he couldn't. He could say any of those things and she couldn't blame him. She wouldn't be mad at him either, perhaps a little hurt, but she would understand.

Then he did something she didn't expect, he kissed her. It was her first kiss, and the kiss she felt like she had been a lifetime for. She had feelings for him since she was a youngling, and they had never left. Sure they were hidden behind her fear for a while but if they hadn't all come back recently the kiss sealed the deal.

When he pulled back she smiled up at him, loving his curious expression. "I think we should do that again..." she said happily. She had been forgive, given another chance with Nyiim. She wouldn't ruin this one.

Kissing was an odd sort of ordeal. It mostly involved the mouth, the softness of the lips, but it brought forth a deep bubbling of emotions and warmth in the chest as well. The kiss broke and he nudged Niadra's forehead with his, remaining close. For a moment there was silence, but he saw in her that his gesture had not gone unappreciated. Then she spoke and Nyiim chuckled. He wasn't expressionless, he wasn't even softly smiling. He was outright grinning. He leaned in again, deepening this kiss just a little for his confidence in it. A large hand moved up to gently tangle in his best friend's hair, or whatever she had become with this kiss, and his free hand found rest on her waist. Such a pretty waist, such a pretty figure. Such a pretty woman, inside and out. He was going to go with her, he thought. She always asked, but not the last time. Not the last time. She didn't need to know that, though. He forgave her for running. They had something new to work with now.

"When I was gone on my quest, all I could think of was you," he said once the kiss had broken. His voice was deepened with comfort and emotion. It was when he had noticed that what he felt for Niadra might not have been only friendship.
