 The soft lyrical melody floated on the air as she sat perched on some large boulders, her tail curled around the wet surface, locking her into place.
Her face lifted towards the warmth of the sun as she sung. Her voice sultry and calling, an almost sorrowing ache in the belly of it as she sang about heartache and love soured.
She had grown and matured over the spring, and embraced life as the summer weather had turned the waters even more tropical and full of others, though she somehow always pondered about the next time she could sneak away and steal a moment with him, it had been for to long since it had happened last.
Not since she had fully blossomed into the beauty she was now.

 Tengu lay on his belly at the top of the cliff listening to the distant song Siren sang. His feelings conflicted. He knew he could glide down to the sand, easy as you please, or even fly out to that sea slick rock she clung to. His wings had gotten much stronger in the time he had known her.
There had come a point. A parting. He noticed how she had grown and how he had grown. How his feelings for her had grown, but mostly how his lies had gotten nearly out of hand. The things he told her...
Because Siren was getting older, wiser, sooner or later she was going to realize... Much more likely sooner, than later. She was going to see him for the fraud that he was, see all of his flaws.
And so he had stopped coming.
But his will was not as strong as his resolve and so he had returned time and again and peered down from his hiding place. Nothing so fanciful as a palace made of clouds but it served its purpose. Seeing her only from afar increased his longing. Hearing her now...
Tengu stood and rushed to throw himself off the cliff edge before he changed his mind, he couldn't wallow any longer. He would go to her now, tell her the truth, tell her everything, swooping out to meet her on her little isle.

The sound of his wings, a sound she knew as well as her own beating heart. She could pick the sound of his wings out against a whole flock of birds.
Siren had of course met dashing young Uudesa's like herself, her mother of course hopeful for a happy pairing, her father scornful over it all..but none of it really mattered, they all seemed so droll compared to Tengu.
A smile touched her lips as she thought of him, her voice carried on as her mind was filled, she was much older than she had been when they met, and she blushed to think of her behavior then, only to frown slightly at the thought that he may still think of her as that little fish.
She sighed as her song came to its sorrowful and tragic end, her heart ached a little. Maybe she would just have to change his mind on that one!

Beating his wings so hard that he was quickly out of breath, Tengu landed hard and rushed forward, her name on his lips tinged with desperation, "Siren!" but his voice caught. Usually it was so smooth. He could talk for hours without it cracking, and he had, with her ...so many times.
Now he couldn't force more out, panting rough. Drinking in the sight of her. Instead of spilling out more words, he let his actions speak. Closing the gap between them and, with eyes closed tightly, pressing his forehead to hers, gently nuzzling her face.
"I've missed you so..."

This greeting was different, the sound of her name on his tongue caused the world to spin to a halt around them, all she could see was him, his scent filling her nose, taking out the briny scent of the sea as he engulfed her.
"Tengu.." She said softly, her eyes closing as their beings met, she quivered at the luxury of his nuzzling, she lifted a paw and cupped his cheek. "I've missed you much more.." She whispered softly.

"I thought I'd never see you again." Tengu murmured with his eyes still tightly closed. When he pulled back a couple inches he dared a glance, needing to take in her face, see this soft expression and know that in this moment at least, she might just feel the same.
His 'curse marked' paw raised to touch hers and he took a few more shuddering breathes. It hadn't been such a long flight, why couldn't he stop shaking... The salty air always made him feel so refreshed. It smelled like her, or she like it?
Tengu sighed and looked away, steeling himself. He had to do this. "It's been so awful, Siren... the things I've done."

Soft smile touched her features at his words, she shook her head, her bangs dancing in her gaze as she let out a soft laugh. "I'd never disappear on you." She whispered softly, worried if her voice grew any louder, that she would break the moment between them.
But at his next words, panic filled her gaze. "Whats been so awful Tengu? What has happened?" Her heart thundered against her chest as worry began to fill her thoughts. "Sssssh...It'll be okay." She stroked his cheek.

"No, you've been the only constant in my life... little princess. Ah, but we are not so little, now." He moved his paws and held her face, brushing her bangs from her eyes before moving his paws away quickly. He shift, but couldn't bring himself to pull away from her, even as he was about to tell her everything.
"I suppose you are mature enough to hear the truth of why I've been away..." Tengu gathered up his thoughts and his determination, putting them in order and then tossing them all away in the next moment. He raised his head and let the single word fall from his lips.
"War."

Her jaw went slack, her mouth just barely hung open as she stared at him in utter shock and disbelief. "War.." She echoed.
"Oh my Tengu, my sweet sky prince.." She drew him in closer now, nuzzling his cheek ever so softly, taking in his scent. She leaned back, her eyes searching his face worriedly. "Are you alright? What has happened?!" She clung to him tightly now. "Oh goodness Tengu, I'm sorry.."

'My Tengu' struck him right in the heart. She still believed all of his nonsense. His stories. His lies. Half the time he didn't remember them to keep them straight, what he had told her or what he had told someone else, but none of that seemed to matter at all.
He blinked and swallowed hard as she nuzzled him and he put on an expression of grim determination, or what he hoped passed for such when she pulled back to look at him. "I'm alright. I hope I didn't worry--" he sat hard, suddenly, going down to his belly, with a whuff of air escaping and a wince what wasn't entirely faked as he hit the stone. Dramatic flair was so much easier on sand.
"Ah. Worry you, too much... I've been, defending my kingdom from usurpers... all the fighting has taken its toll. I'm exhausted, but coming this far to see you. It's worth it."

"Oh by tides.." She was all but in tears over this recent news, he could have been killed, and taken from her and she'd never have known. It caused her heart to ache in a way she'd never felt before.
At his wince of pain, she realized that he wasnt quiet as built for the hard stone as she was, she had grown up around reefs and was used to it unforgiving feel of it.
"Lets go to the beach." She said softly, fighting everything in her being to just hold him close and be thankful to have him there. "Tengu, you didn't have to exhaust yourself for me." She said as she nuzzled one of his wings, worried they were sore from the journey. She pondered the thought of offering him a ride to shore, but she knew that one so magnificent as him, would never accept such an offer

He lay at her feet, gazing up at her and attempting to enjoy that she was so worried for him, that she had missed him as much as he had missed her. At the same time his guilt pecked at him, he had lied again, the false words came so much easier, and the hard stone beneath was not comfortable to lay on in the least.
Still he tried, even as she spoke up. Tengu pulled her in and rolled on his side, "If it's all the same to you, I think I'd rather stay like this a while longer..."

"Tengu!" She squealed as she was pulled against him, she laughed and smiled at him as she curled her tail around him as best she could.
Sometimes, being aquatic was an awkward chore.
She nuzzled her face against his cheek as she let out a soft, cooing like purr, if she could freeze time, and bask in this moment with him forever, she would.
"Whatever you wish.." She whispered as she just soaked in this moment. The worry that war could take him at any moment, made her cling just a little tighter.

Laying like this, Tengu found that he didn't mind that the stone was hard against his back, cold and wet. That she lay against him and even curled her tail to cling on made his heart race. He curled his tail around her as well, and his arms and purred along with her. Just holding her without saying a word.
Although he couldn't say for sure, this was probably the first time that the stories didn't flow from him. Sure he had a tale bubbling up, full of action and drama. He could add in lots of mid-air battles and close escapes. It would unfold as it always did and be wonderfully thrilling, but no words came. If he couldn't tell her the truth, maybe he couldn't tell her anything at all...
He touched her face as she continued nuzzling, running his paw gently through her hair which had dried crisp in the salty breeze.
"Siren..."

The crunch of her hair made her nose wrinkle slightly, his fur was much softer than hers, that dried in the sunlight due to her life in the sea. Maybe it would have been softer, better if she had at least dwelled on land, then she wouldnt be crunchy she thought with a soft sigh.
Though at the sound of her name, her ears perked and she gazed at him fondly, Siren wasnt one to hide her feelings or emotions, they simply flowed through her. "Yes?"
