It was a beautiful summer day; the sun was shining, a breeze was blowing, the air was warm without being stifling or constricting. It was the sort of day that living creatures of all sorts enjoyed; the young would be out frolicking, the old would be enjoying naps in the warm sun, and the in-between would be out doing whatever it was that they did on summer days. Even the birds, butterflies, and miscellaneous creepy-crawly things were getting in on the action; the very air was alive with motion and activity!

All of this action passed, unnoticed and un-registered, by Verchiel. Anyone watching the large white colt might be surprised at the sight; a young, healthy-looking foal just lying in the grass, staring solemnly at...nothing. He didn't seem to notice the fresh green grass or the bright sun; he showed no interest in the flitting butterflies or the diving birds. A centipede crawled over one of his legs without the colt so much as twitching; if it wasn't for the slight motion of his sides with each breath, one could easily assume the foal was dead!

In a way, they wouldn't be far off.

As the centipede made its way up the foal's leg, Verchiel's eyes finally flicked over to study it. For a few long minutes, the centipede crept its way along, oblivious to the foal's scrutiny. But considering the lack of enthusiasm behind that scrutiny, who could blame it? Besides his eyes, Verchiel hadn't moved a single muscle; neither a turn of his head nor a twitch of his nose accompanied his observation of the caterpillar. It was just more of the same; the same lethargic attitude, the same solemn expression, the same fixed stare. All together, the complete lack of movement would tell the casual observer one thing: this foal was seriously bored.

And in a way, they would be right. Verchiel had no interest in the caterpillar, the day, his surroundings, or anything else. As far as he was concerned, the day could have been cold, rainy, humid, hailing, or all of the above. He could have been on a mountain peak, in the desert, or lying in the middle of a pond. Surroundings were inconsequential...just like everything else. Truth be told, there was nothing about this beautiful day that grabbed Verchiel's attention; there was nothing that even attracted it.

But then, there was nothing surprising in any of this. From his earliest moments, Verchiel had been like this; uninterested, unenthused, uninspired. Nothing had ever sparked his interest; nothing had ever caught his attention. Even when he was a very young foal, he had watched the world with the same dead eyes; neither his parents nor his brothers had ever drawn a syllable from the foal's lips. He listened well enough, but beyond that....nothing. It just wasn't worth the effort.

Nothing was worth the effort.
