Lynnea lay near the mouth of the cave, watching the snowflakes fall beyond the dark stone walls. Snow storms as light as this one (although she supposed it might seem much heavier to someone trapped within) were amazing to watch. Every time a flake drifted through the entryway and into her little cavern, she got to watch it drift down to the floor as it melted in the warmer air. The snow that came out of the sky was almost magical in its purity and power - though tiny by themselves, snowflakes could drown an unsuspecting person up here, especially in the winter. It was much the same for the place she came from, the snow storms had been rarer up there; most of the snow that had lain on the ground was old and dry. Up there, the snowflakes had been herself and the mares, finally upsetting themselves into a flurry and drowning their society. And then they had been set free to drift wherever they chose. It was good to be free, to be able to see this snows storm as more than a thing she would never see without a possessive father and timid mother by her side. She could see it with new eyes now, and though it was bittersweet, she enjoyed the isolation it brought. She would never again be trapped with people who restricted her.
Lynnea was free, just like the single snowflakes that fell free of their brothers and sisters to dance in the warm air of the cave.

Eala Liante felt the cold bite of winter. Her breath was frost, but it was not as bad as the winters from home. Back there your blood would never fall, but freeze before it hit the ground. She did not want to think of that.
Moving slowly, she shivered a little searching for the mouth of a cave to hide in. She needed shelter and soon. If she stayed out here, she would perish and she had survived too much to perish in an ice storm.
About twenty yards ahead of her, she saw a large cave opening up. She pressed herself into the wind and pushed towards it. Her feathers were stiff with frost and her eyes stung with bitter cold. The mouth of the cave was like a blast of heat and sudden colors.
There was a mare standing there.

Before her eyes, a mare that looked like a snow spirit emerged from the snow and stepped into her cave. Lynnea's eyes widened at the sight as her ears took in the click of talons and the clunk of hooves. As she looked closer, though, she saw that the mare was less a snow spirit and more of a... haunting spirit. Where at first she had appeared to blend into the white of the snow, Lynnea now saw that she was a bright blue, brilliant against the dark walls. Her markings were spiderwebs, and, on her tail feathers, Lynnea thought she spotted human skulls. Careful. "Can I help you?" she asked, not moving to get to her feet. Until she knew that this mare trusted her to not make a combative move, she wouldn't be making any. She couldn't risk a scratch from one of those claws.

Eala's eyes adjusted after a moment to the darkness of the cave. As much as she wanted to, she did not take a step back. She did not know if this mare was friend or foe. All she could hope to do was stand her ground or leave with all her organs intact. Beneath those tucked up leg there could be talons or claws. She did not know.
"Sorry," Eala tilted her head keeping her eyes on the other mare. "I was looking for shelter, nothing more. Would you share this cave with me until the storm passes?" She was unused to speaking so much, she had been a long time in solitude till recently.
