Symbol: The first hieroglyph in the name Seshat.

Profile: Mahmud, given his home and inexperience, is a pretty solitary troll. He's not against interaction with others by any stretch; in fact, he'd love some right about now. However, the Trials have made him suspicious of anyone who isn't his lusus. During the Trials, Mahmud had tried to befriend and partner up with other trolls. That lead to him being almost being killed on multiple occasions. Therefore, once coming out of the chambers the last thing the boy wanted to do was hang around fellow trolls. Now that he's had a good amount of time on his own with Harpommy, however, he's starting to have inner conflict between being afraid and being lonely. During his recent isolated sweeps, most of his interests became centered on creating things.

First thing out the metaphorical ether, this kid LOVED making slam poetry and rap. As a small troll, language was the first creative area he was able to access. Poetry and rhythm are skills he has a knack for. Nowadays, it's his favorite pastime when he's all out of things to build on his house with. He'll also read books of poetry and try to inspire himself

As he's gotten older by a sweep or so though, his Ommy had managed to rub her bird habits off on her charge. When Harpommy would bring back random knickknacks to build a nest to sleep in, Mahmud became interested in what she was doing. Now he's fostered a love for architecture and construction. While he's just beginning to learn this trade, it is one of the few aspects of his life he will take risks in. This has now overtaken Slam Poetry as his main hobby.

Back in the pits he had gone from being a wide eyed, naive little kid ready and raring to go to someone beaten down, literally and figuratively speaking. By the time he came out that soft little push-over attitude had hardened into a loud, brash, opinionated little bugger. Mahmud's become accustomed to thinking that if he can make himself seem bigger, louder, tougher, and meaner than he is, nobody will come after him to hurt him. He's not adept at knowing when to start pulling back on that attitude yet. Mahmud's happy he's not being pushed around, or even not having his life threatened. That being said, it's gotten to a point where the crippling loneliness is outweighing any pros being blustering can give.

Mahmud should have some opinion on the hemospectrum. Any time the topic is brought up, however, his biggest opinion is that he doesn't want to talk about it. Period. He doesn't feel like getting his a** kicked. Talking about his place, and whether or not he agrees on being considered lesser than other trolls, is all nice and dandy in the right company. Mahmud doesn't think ANYONE right now is the right company. Either he admits he feels the hemospectrum is wrong, and has to get his butt kicked, or he has to lie, say it's right, and end up hating himself. The best option Mahmud could come with is to try and shut down those conversations before it happens.Deep down, he thinks the hemospectrum is a load of lusus dung.

Making friends with Mahmud is going to take plenty of patience. Someone's got to have proof that they mean no harm, nor think he's less than them. Mahmud wants friends, but is unsure if people can be trusted. His idea is if someone's willing enough to keep sitting there and take his s**t, they must be willing to be a friend. That being said, even if he wants to, Mahmud cannot control how other trolls feel about this. Some trolls will get angry, and aggressive straight back to him. In true little kid fashion, he will try to escalate the situation the best he can until he becomes so scared, he runs to Ommy and hides. On the other hand, what if he hurts a troll's feelings to the point that they avoid him or becomes afraid of him? That would hurt Mahmud even worse. He was bullied, and doesn't want any other trolls to feel that way. Mahmud's just scared, and has difficulty controlling that instinct to push others away.

Strengths: Tenacious : "Quit" is not a word in Mahmud's dictionary. If he's committed to an idea he's going to do it! Making plans, executing ideas, name it and he'll do it. He does not enjoy leaving things unfinished. That being said, not everything needs or should be finished. Some ideas should be abandoned, and some friendships aren't worth salvaging. Mahmud's determined to see everything through to its logical conclusion.

Resourceful: His type of creativity is one that takes ideas and engineers them into reality. He's the sort of troll who, despite his rather coarse language and demeanor at times, has an elegant execution to solving problems that involve physical or verbal construction. While his style is eclectic it's nonetheless effective at doing its job. Note that while he can find creative and resourceful solutions to problems, it doesn't mean that he has an organized method of doing so.

Enthusiastic: This kid's passionate about everything he does. Get him on a subject he enjoys, or around the rare troll he trusts? Prepare for a big ol' bundle of gung-ho energy. Proposing a plan in front of him will lead into one big session of trying to make that idea a reality. Once he's opened up a bit, Mahmud's going to freaking explode with excitement and happy friendship time... maybe too much so.

Flaws: Blustering: As a basic defense mechanism, Mahmud tends to put off a lot of bravado. The idea is simple: if he acts big and tough enough, people won't try to hurt him. At the same time, he has yet to learn that boundary between being putting on a strong front, and being a jerk. He'll push this jerk boundary farther than it should go out of fear of someone else hurting him.

Stubborn: It's going to be hard to get Mahmud to change his mind once he's fixated on an idea. Unless something blows up in his face with no hope of salvaging the situation, trying to change his mind takes an act of god. All of his recent choices, according to him, have been safe and sound ones; Why should he change? Despite this, he's not unreasonable, and is willing to listen to someone else's perspective. Mahmud's not going to change his mind without a heap of good reasons.

Sensitive: Mahmud's been born far more sensitive than the average troll. It's hard for him not to take a troll's aggressiveness personally, and it leads him to over-analyze everyone's actions. Had he been born less sensitive, the list of traits above would look different. He's not emotionally volatile, or driven to violence. Even when he's being abrasive, the thought of making another troll sad hurts his heart. He's prone to making poor choices based on emotion rather than logic, and finding out he's made mistakes or hurt someone adds to his moodiness.

Weapon: Bat or Macekind. His item is a rather large stick with rusty old and bent nails poking out all over the place. Mahmud decided that it'd give some extra use out of nails not fit for construction.

Appearance: There aren't many remarkable things about Mahmud's appearance when it comes to dress: his outfit is a standard black tank shirt (emblazoned with his symbol), and then dark grey/black carpenter shorts. His shoes are closed-toed standard steel-toed work boots. They are well worn clothes, and tend to get ripped and scuffed while he works on things around the house.

He also has a normal little troll face, with the only two things setting him apart are horns and hair. Horns feel free to go nuts on design. Hair, there's just... so much hair. So many black curly curls from every direction. Its long enough for him to pull back at times into a ponytail, and he is not above wearing hair clips if it keeps hair out of his face.

Home: Mahmud and Harpommy live out in the rural desert areas, south of Chittentown, where her sweet sweet baby has enough room to grow and develop his construction abilities. The only condition Mahmud gave to the drones were "leave a way for Ommy to fly in, and leave me a bunch of stuff".

They didn't leave behind stuff, but the first condition was easy enough. Mahmud's home is based off a small, mesa-style home with a large side window with a little shutter door Harpommy can open in the night time to let herself in and out, and shut in the daytime to keep out unwanted undead. The home itself is one room, and Mahmud's recuperacoon is on the other side of the home, away from the window, to keep him away from the sun.

The rest of the building is a goddamn constructive mishmash of ideas. He's still a kid trying to explore and think about what he wants. Any time Harpommy brings home stuff from her journeys outside, Mahmud uses that item in a way that builds on the hive. Right now, he's concentrating on adding a floor two at the moment.

Lusus: Mahmud can't take five steps away from home without Harpommy hovering around. Is she a pigeon? Is she a troll? Aren't harpies beautiful trolls with wings and feet of a bird? Okay there's no way around it, Harpommy (shortened to Ommy) is a goddamn bird with vestigial fat chest sacs and a troll torso. She tries to feed Mahmud the best way her bird instincts know how... by trying to spit regurgitated food down her sweet little troll baby's throat.

It's not a pleasant experience for anyone but her.

Other than that feeding mechanism though, Mahmud and Harpommy are tight as can be. Even if he didn't require her protection, the boy would bring her along everywhere. Harpommy is a soft-hearted sweetie, much like her son is deep down inside, who enjoys trying to help other troll kids. Anyone coming to visit his hive can expect his mom to start preening them. And maybe trying to feed them.

Was it mentioned before getting fed wasn't pleasant?

It’s finally time! Crit for Skyli hooray  Thanks for your patience.

First thing I’d like to ask you about is Mahmud’s opinionated nature versus his feelings concerning the Hemospectrum. It doesn’t make much sense to me that he could be so stubborn opinionated, and clearly wary of others, but have no solid thoughts on the hemospectrum and refuse to care. This is something that affects all trolls on Alternia – it governs how he’s treated and how he treats others! Even if he says he doesn’t care about it, it will certainly change the way he interacts and I’m not buying his apathy towards it. I like that you start to refer to his want to not risk his own skin to fight someone about it, but in the same vein you also mention that he’s going to speak his mind no matter what. I would take another look at this and tailor it towards how Mahmud regularly interacts with his other traits in mind, because it’s not meshing for me. Consider how he reacts to abuses of the hemospectrum, those who follow it and those who are above and below him.

How much would it take to get Mahmud to open up? It seems as though he’s got two main parts to him – that paranoid, protective side that he’s learned from the trials and being an orangeblood, and a passionate and self-sacrificing side. Right now there’s some waffling between him opening up to people immediately (being lonely and hungry for interaction but being inexperienced) and him really being slow to befriend (“changing him is going to take some time”, etc). It’s causing a bit of a conflict for me right now, because it seems like two totally different “modes” of his and I’m not able to connect it just yet without elaboration.

How does Mahmud get out of trouble when he’s spouting off unpopular opinions? With his tenacity does Harpommy have to bail him out, or does he have methods of, uhhh – not getting culled?

His self-sacrificing nature seems like something that won’t affect him on a nightly basis. Unless he specifically has a friend who puts him through the ringer every single night (which you really can’t predict) I might suggest shifting this into his profile section or considering how you might make this a constant! Especially given how he needs to open up in the first place for it to come into effect.

Harpommy is wonderful and I love her. Bless her little bird heart.

That’s what I got!

Mahmud is reading great. I’m already excited to see him around the shop. My crit’s probably going to be rather short.

When it comes to Mahmud’s Opinionated flaw, how does his tendency to speak bluntly interact with his Sensitivity flaw? He seems like a really cautious person socially so what influences him to be so straight-forward? Does he realize when he’s crossing a line or does he not realize when he’s offended someone? Is it part of his “appear bigger than your enemies” bravado? (Which I like a lot since that’s totally a trait I can see someone raised by birds picking up.)

That’s really all I’ve got!

“ that naturally calmer nature that lowbloods have”
^ this is not necessarily true! It’s a social stereotype of course, but not necessarily biological. I'm not a proponent of pinning personality on caste in general.

The paragraph that begins with “All of this being said” is pretty roundabound for what you’re trying to say, and I would suggest simplifying it a bit. You’ve got a ton of back to back similes and metaphors that are actually muddying your point rather than clarifying (you go from bugs to pigeons to balls ((which are kind of an unusual thing to refer to on Alternia anyway?)) and then you have a really awkward sentence here: “ grow a metaphorical pair, and he's still not quite adept at controlling it” which sounds like he’s not able to control his “pair”. Okay, moving on.) I honestly think if you just cut the metaphors it would read just fine.

“People who will stay around, for whatever reason, must like having such a bossy loud guy around.” I’d rather hear about him being bossy and loud rather than what other people might assume. It’s best to avoid projecting what other trolls will think of your troll.

Sometimes the colloquial nature of Mahmud’s profile gets a bit hard to read because the tone sounds as though it’s in a narrator’s voice rather than being impartial which affects how we perceive his personality. This is pretty apparent in his hemospectrum paragraph, where it is very clear that he DOES have opinions on the hemospectrum (that he hates it) and just chooses not to engage or share his opinions with anyone. It’s a big difference. The colloquialisms and outside references take me out of the applications sometimes in general.

“Its not that he's a big proponent for troll equality; rather, he does not really give a hoot.”
Once again, it doesn’t sound that way, it just sounds that he’s projecting that outwards!

I am having an issue with his Opinionated flaw, because you previously mention that “if he hurts a troll's feelings to the point if they avoid him or, heavens forbid, become scared of him? That would hurt Mahmud even worse than getting punched. Mahmud's always scared, he knows what its like to be scared, and to know he's made another troll feel just as bad would break that heart in two.”

This is a really big contradiction. I much prefer his anxious, self-aware side to this opinionated side as I’m not convinced of it as much at this time when in conjunction with his other traits.

Sensitive is reading better but as it stands with the wording of his opinionated flaw it’s not working.

In general through the app, do a double check for run-ons and grammar! There is some weirdness.

BUT overall, Mahmud's reading really great!

OKAY, lets throw this back up in there!

Biggest changes are the removal of all hyperbole (I think thats the right word?) and then changing Opinionated to Blustering.

Since it was a biiiiig change, I worry if it'll make things sound more clunky again/need to add more explanation so please let me know!

Great changes! It was much easier to read; good job paring it all down. Proud to say:
