It was dark already. The day had gone by too quickly, with more than enough work to keep Lex distracted from the hours that ticked by. Programming the latest translated texts into Ami's research network, cafeteria duty, target practice, more research on weapons of old. When the sun had gone down, Lex's attentions had gone up.

It was Tuesday.

He dogeared his book on ancient ruins and folklore of the Swedes, and hurriedly walked down through the nicer parts of the towns and through the dilapidated shacks to the one nice cottage along the shoreline. Ami wasn't home, as per usual, and Lex fussed with the coffeepot and the blender, making Maebe's drink in record time and pouring his own steaming hot brew into a thermos.

The walk back to the dorms was nothing eventful, and Lex soon found himself at Maebe's door. "Permission to enter Fort Knox?" He called through the wood, smarmy grin plastered to his face.

Unsurprisingly, Maebe had not taken account to what day it was until she heard the knock on her door, and that telltale voice reminding her that she got free drinks on Tuesdays. It was like a tiny Christmas present, once a week. The only thing that would have made them any better, would be if he'd wrapped them for her to tear into - but she'd need to renegotiate their terms for something like that.

She opened the door after unlocking it, and stretched out her arms dramatically, before letting them whirl back up in front of her with twin birds flipping in his direction.

"You're late." He wasn't. "I almost thought you weren't coming anymore." She hadn't. "It was starting to hurt my feelings." It didn't.

Maebe earned herself a nonplussed look and a quirked lip before Lex walked right through her and into the girl's room, setting her drink down on the first empty space he could find. He stood in the middle of her room, nursing his thermos.

"The day you get your feelings hurt by me is the day hell freezes over." Lex snorted, shrugging his shoulders. "If anything, you'd just be upset about not getting a sugar high."

Maebe let out a soft whine of insult before closing and locking the door, only to turn and bound past him - shoulder slamming against him as she walked, for revenge - and grabbing for her cup. "How dare you. I would be torn up if you hurt me. I would cry for days into my pillow, with a picture of you beside it, and several pencils shoved through the picture right into your heart. That is how crushed I would be. Just utterly distraught."

She said all of this with a ridiculous grin that did not match her words at all, after having climbed onto her desk and curled up into herself to enjoy her Tuesday Drink.

"Mmmm. Good. Now my day is made."

Lex snorted loudly, drinking his coffee while looking over the rim at Maebe, analyzing her. "Did you do that with a picture of Truckerboy?" He quipped, all smiled much like the girl across from him. "Or did you do something even more lame like carve yours and his name into a tree?"

Lex had obviously seen too many romcoms in his day.

In the silence that followed his last words, one could almost imagine the sound of something dropping, breaking, shattering, without it ever happening. Her smile was gone - quicker than a snap - and her lips parted for one single breathy exhale.

Then she looked down into her frappuchino, and felt herself harden around the emotions that Lex's words managed to dredge up out of her. She felt the walls rise up, taking with it any sign that he'd managed to penetrate her heart at all.

"Actually, no." She chuckled out breathlessly. "There won't be any trees for us. Sorry to disappoint." She took another sip of her frappuchino, but the taste had soured.

Her silence was deafening. Lex immediately knew he'd gone and ******** up, because he was intimate with the immediate silence. He knew that sudden drop of any warmth or energy in the air, the armoring of the heart.

Lex heaved a heavy sigh, gingerly sitting next to her on the desk. "Sorry." He breathed, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Some lines shouldn't be crossed. He knew that.

"So, who do you think was hotter in that fight?" He suddenly switched his tone, smarmy and smiles once again. Letting the negativity steep for too long would only lead to worse things.

She did not flinch when his hand rested on her shoulder. Her opposite hand reached up to pat his hand gently, in an understanding gesture. His question was meant to change the tone, and she gripped onto it like a lifesaver, as she was ever ready to keep anything real, and honest, from rising to the surface.

"That's not a fair question." She murmured, her head turning just slightly to give him a sinister side glance. "If you wanted me to say you, you shouldn't have fought someone I have feelings for. Go pick a fight with Rep, maybe. Then I can dutifully sing the praises of your glistening pectorals and rippling abs."

Of course, he'd have to have his shirt off first, and somehow Maebe had the common sense not to mention undressing in a spar around Lex, anymore, so she left that tidbit out of the conversation.

Lex snorted loudly, like a fly had been caught in his nostril or he'd suddenly become possessed by and elephant ghost. "What, didn't get a good enough look the first time? Dunno how much Ams would like me giving out seconds." Lex finished on a rather somber note.

Again, the mood shifted suddenly downward. He could already tell this was not going to be a fun ride.

"Besides, Rep'd kick my a** to high heaven. Assuming he'd even bother with me." He pulled out a small flask from his coat pocket as he muttered, pouring a shot into his coffee and offering some of the bourbon to Maebe silently.

"And I thought you were over Mr. Grace?"

"You sure do have a high opinion of Rep." Maebe teased, her eyes widening as if she'd just discovered something important. Of course, she held her drink out for the flask, quite pleased to be offered as much. "He's more bark than bite. I mean, he's got a lot of bite. But just not so much that you shouldn't think you could take him in a fair fight." Of course, Maebe had little experience with Rep's fighting skill, other than the fact he'd almost killed her best friend. That just meant he was reckless.

She would hold out her drink extra long once he mentioned Dawson, as if to say that comment had just earned her a double shot. "I wouldn't say that. I would say that he's been honest about not having any feelings for me whatsoever. So, this is just about me trying to accept that." Her lips pursed tightly to one side. "Not sure if you knew this about me, Lexi, but I don't accept things easily."

"Mmm. More like a high opinion of him in combat. Can't say much for him as a human being." Lex retorted, pouring Maebe a triple shot for having drawn the truth out from her - a process much like pulling a tooth. He shrugged, popping the lid closed and stuffing it back into his coat.

He gave Maebe a very tired look, nodding along with her. "Alcohol helps with both those things. Accepting, and getting over it."

A goofy smile spread over his face, and Lex plopped himself onto Maebe's bed, leaning back against a hurriedly made nest of pillows and stuffed animals. Honestly, his sexuality felt like it was beginning to slip. "I don't think I've ever told you about a little French girl named Salome', have I?" He asked, not pausing for Maebe to answer. "She's the one girl who nearly got me to commit, back when The Strip was mine. Must have let her live with me for... I dunno, a month? I thought I was in love; she was just looking for a way to stay in the States for free. Found out she had a boyfriend waiting for her back in Paris - felt bad for the guy - and I packed all her s**t for her and left it outside my apartment door. Never saw her again." He sighed, sipping at his boozed up coffee. "When I'd finally woke up the next morning, I had a hangover larger and more annoying than Texas."

The smile faded, Lex licking his dried lips. "Point is, after that hangover was through, I put her behind me. I know it's harder to do that with someone who's your friend, and you may not even want to put him behind you; but you need to pack up those feelings' luggage and set it outside your dorm. Let them hop on a plane to Paris and never reach out to them again. "

Taking a sip of the drink after it was spiced up made her wince, and she coughed out a laugh at how strong it was now. Frappuchinos were probably not meant to hold that much liquor in them, but then again, neither was she. And Lex was right about one thing; alcohol seemed to be the only answer, lately. It never worked on a permanent basis, but it managed so sweetly to give her that temporary forgetfulness. Most times.

Now that she thought about it, every time she'd been drunk recently had been with Dawson. She hadn't even given herself much of a chance to try and forget. And when she thought about it, she realized she was doing it on purpose. Part of her never wanted to forget. It was stubborn, and willful, and desperate to torture her.

Lex started prattling on about a girl in his past, after lounging on her bed as if it was his. She felt the prickles of territorial envy pluck at the back of her neck, and moved to climb on top of it, curling up with her back against his middle. He wasn't allowed to make himself so comfortable without her say so, even if he had just given her a drink.

"The problem is, I can't pack anything up. Can't hop on a plane to Paris, anymore." She muttered, sucking sourly on the straw of her drink. "We're all stuck here. Forever. We can't move on. We can't move out. And you're right; he's one of my best friends. I'd probably be dead if it wasn't for him. I don't think even moving to Paris would have changed the way I feel, even if I could have."

Nothing was simple, at Deus.

She took one last, long sip, all but finishing the drink off far too quickly. When it was done, she felt it rush her head too quickly, and it lolled back until it hit his side. "I wasn't even supposed to have feelings." She admitted, a little too honestly for her taste. "This place. It's poisoned me into emotion."

Lex's face scrunched up when Maebe went and made herself comfortable right on top of him. They were friends, but not those kind of friends. Even if Maebe had given Lex more in 5 minutes than Ami did in a day.

Her talk of the problems she ran into with Deus resonated with him; he'd just given that same speech to Claudia. "You're right. It's not simple anymore. We actually have to deal with the consequences of one-night stands and broken relationships." His expression clouded as he looked through the locked door, to the dorms surrounding them. "The cleanup is so much more messy when another person's feelings are involved."

Lex's sigh was dark, and his hands worked their way to support his head, the thermos of coffee set on the floor for the time being. "If only we could find some kind of antidote."

"I thought that's what this was supposed to be." Maebe muttered unhappily, holding out her now empty cup before letting it drop on the floor. "The antidote."

Clearly she'd developed an immunity.

"Unfortunately," Lex sighed, staring at the ceiling with a wistful sigh, "You can build up an immunity to all antidotes. And out particular antidote tends to strip away any inhibitors. It's almost like a Malaria shot."

Without thinking, his hands had moved to Maebe's shoulders, thumbs putting pressure into her blades. "I'm starting to understand we can't just suppress our feelings. The books say it's not healthy, and I know from experience. But it's so much easier."

"But then you pop."
