Today had not been a good day. Not only had he started off his day with waking up from a nightmare, but he heard back form the front that another of his friends from their training days was missing. So he was in a dark mood with a splitting headache when some punks started trying to mess with a girl on the subway. Good news: The girl was able to get off the subway at her stop and thanked him profusely for making sure the punks wouldn't mess with her anymore. Bad news: They're also managed to get a couple of wallops on him so he wasn't exactly the prettiest picture.
"So much for my modeling career." he said, chuckling the morphed into a groan as he settled down on a bench. It was far too early to return home, and he really didn't feel like having to field some hospital questions for a split lip and a few bloody knuckles. "Wonder if there's an Apothecary around here?"

It had been an okay day for Shaye so far. Nothing really interesting had happened but nothing bad either. Since he had grown he had began working at the shop his mothers' owned. He did enjoy it. Their need to help others had rubbed off on him. The day had been rather nice and mild for the summertime and Shaye had decided to go for a walk. He paused as he heard a nearby groan and moved towards the sound. It was then he saw a male with red hair sitting on a bench looking a bit beat up. He moved to the front of the man and smirked, "Let me guess... the other guy got it worse?" He was always making small jokes in the hopes of making others smile.

Ray looked up when he heard someone approach, relaxing a bit at their casual observation. "Yeah, all three of them." he said, wincing when the smile he made tugged at the split in his lip and made it sting. "Didn't thrash 'em as much as they deserved for messing with a lady in the subway - but I guess it can't be helped.", he chuckled, nodding his head to the stranger. Honestly, he didn't mind a little bruising if it meant others would be kept safe - a mentality that had stuck with him all throughout his training and service. True, it got him in trouble a lot of the time (case and point: this evening), but he was just happy to help.
He blinked when a little black kitten suddenly decided he'd make a good perch, leaning back and sending the other man a quizzical glance. "Friend of yours?" he asked, dancing his fingers in front of the fussy feline and watching it paw at them.

Shaye chuckled, "That sounds about right." He never understood why some people hurt others for the pleasure of it. He watched the cat perch up on the male and laughed, "That she is, her name is Nightshade. She follows me everywhere. My name is Shaye." He paused as Nightshade mewled a bit at him and seemed to give the animal and exasperated look before turning his attention back to the man. He looked over him slowly, "You could use some salve on that cut and something to ease the pain. My family's shop isn't far from here. The needed supplies are there if you'll let me help."

Ray raised a brow at the kitten's name and the stranger's introduction. "Feisty little thing, isn't she?" he muttered when the small cat managed to catch onto a finger and bite at the fingertip - only to follow up with a brief licking and nuzzle of the wounded digit. He looked up with a slight smile, nodding to Shaye. "Nice to meet ya, Shaye and Nightshade. I'm Reagan Tuathal, though most call me Ray." he paused to chuckle, "In fact, if you call me Reagan, I'll be too busy looking over my shoulder for my mother to pay attention to what you're saying."
He blinked at the other man's quick diagnosis of his wounds, raising a brow. "A salve, eh? Haven't heard people use that term in a while." he snorted, rolling his eyes and picking up the black cat in one hand as he stood. "Lead the charge." Ray said, a twinkle in his eye as he settled the cat against his chest and continued petting her in an attempt to soothe her.

Nightshade found the way that Ray carried her adequate and settled down easily. Shaye laughed and nodded, "All right Ray." He looked down and chuckled as Ray pointed out his choice of words. "Yeah well, one of my mothers is a bit old-fashioned." He led Ray through the streets and only a few turns until they reached the shop. Today it was closed and so Shaye used his key to open the door. With the light coming into the windows Ray would be able to make out the shapes of books and figurines, the smell of herbs, mainly sage lingered in the air. Once inside Shaye shut the door and began leading Ray to the back rooms, a couple of the beads in his hair glowing softly. "This way please."

Ray followed Shaye easily to the shop, mentally making a note of the directions they took. True, he'd normally be far more wary about following complete strangers into darker parts of the city - but something told him he could trust Shaye. It could've been the easy, joking manner with which he spoke, or the genuine concern he'd seen in the other man's eyes when he'd checked out Ray's injuries. It reminded him painfully of a few of his old teammates.
When Shaye opened the shop, Nightshade wriggled out of Ray's grasp and started prowling along the shelves. Ray watched the feline with a raised brow, following her owner into the back of the shop. "You said one of your mothers was old fashioned..." he paused to chuckle, " From this place's name and general atmosphere, can I assume they're herbalists or something like that?"

Shaye chuckled as he turned on the light in the back office. It was nicely furnished the basic desk and filing cabinet but also a couch, coffee table and a mini-fridge "Something like that. Have a seat." He moved back to get some herbs and the mortar and pestle. "So Ray... taking on three attackers at once... and based on your clothes I'd guess military?" He began grinding the herbs and heating water.

Ray took the invitation of being brought into the room to plop down on the most causal piece of furniture - namely, the battered couch off to one side. It smelled heavily of incense and something sweetly herbal that he just couldn't place. Sage or lavender, perhaps? He was unsure - what he was sure of was Nightshade apparently finding him the most comfortable being around to curl up on.
He tilted his head to the side at Shaye's innocent question, nodding. "Good guess. I'm a Marine, recently put on shore leave." he paused when the cat in his lap started purring, a soft smile tugging at his lips. "Not sure how long they'll let me stay off the front lines - the other guys guys have started calling me 'Lucky'. 'cause I'm Irish, or something." he snorted and rolled his eyes good naturedly.

"Well do you want to go back yet? That nickname must mean you have been in very dangerous situations and you are still here." Shaye smiled and put the crushed herbs into a loose tea infuser and began steeping it in the tea cup. He set it on the table with some honey and smiled, "This should ease the pain rather quickly.Once it turns golden you can sweeten it and drink." He laughed as he saw Nightshade so cozily on his lap, "She has really taken a shine to you."

At Shaye's question, all Ray could do was shrug. "I don't think anyone wants there to be a reason we have to go back. Here's to hoping one day it'll be enough." He chuckled at Shaye's comment, scratching at the back of his head self-consciously. "Not sure if they've all been as dangerous as the promos make you think - but, yeah, there's been a few close calls. I think they mostly use it because of my accent."
Ray scowled when Shaye set the tea in front of him, resisting the urge be immature and stick his tongue out at the cup. "Fairly certain a shot or two of whiskey would do the same job." he muttered dispassionately. He kept one eye on the steeping tea, smiling when Shaye laughed at his cat. "Most animals tend to like me. She's just a little bit more possessive than most."

Shaye sat down next to Ray and Nightshade, "That is true, I suppose. Violence should be avoided in my opinion. As for your nickname, I do like your accent." He laughed as he saw the look Ray gave the tea. "How about we make a deal then? Drink down the tea and I'll by you a few shots of whiskey to wash it down."

Ray raised a brow as Shaye sat down, snorting at his comment. "I suppose that shouldn't surprise me. A lot of people I've met find my accent a bit odd." hr rolled his eyes, "It's difficult to get a word in edge-wise when someone butts, like, "Wow!! Are you Irish?? I love your accent! Say something Irish!! "" He attempted his best 'annoying girl voice', but was unsure if it came through.
At the reminder of the steeping tea Ray frowned dispassionately in its direction, sitting innocently on the table. Then Shaye's offer sank in and he gave the other man a wry smile. "My, my, my! Somehow I suddenly feel like you've lured me into your lair to seduce me with fine drinking."

Shaye laughed at Ray's rendition of women, "Well damn that must be annoying." A playful smirk spread over his face, "And if I have?" He laughed and shook his head, "A drink actually sounds good, and that tea will speed up the healing process." He really liked talking to Ray it was very entertaining, and a bit of flirting couldn't hurt.
