Assignment: I think if I had to choose the enchantment that is most important to me, well, you might think it is a little silly, but the enchantment that would be hardest for me to live without would be the insulation enchantments we have in the dorms. Our dorms here at Leviathan are very old and very cold, and they were built before insulating materials were commonly available. With no fiberglass to keep the heat in and the cold out, the builders of Leviathan had to resort to using enchantments to keep the elements at bay. Without those wards on our walls, windows, and doors, winter here in the mountains would be very unpleasant indeed.

Why do I love our insulation so much? Well, I am part Bakeneko, and as a Bakeneko (or rather, a Bakeneko hybrid), I do not have a strong tolerance for the cold. Even as Bakenekos go, I have a very low tolerance—my fur is not very thick, nor is it particularly fluffy, and I was not able to bring very many blankets with me to college. As such, winter nights can get unbearable. Winter days are not any easier, either. The snow looks nice from inside, but touch the window with your hand and you can feel the cold all the easier. The insulation enchantments keep that cold down to a bare minimum so that we do not have to bundle up as much in the winter and we do not have to turn the thermostats up quite so high. Being underground helps to a certain degree, but the insulation spells handle the rest.

The insulation also helps in the summer. Summers here in the Valley of the Maiden’s Wreath are much milder than they are at lower elevations, but they can still be a little warm for some people’s tastes. As such, the worst of the heat can be kept out by the insulation spells.

Like most spells, they have to be updated every so often, but it seems that the strength of the spells here at Leviathan is very strong. I suspect that that is because there are so many magic users here, but I could be wrong. I am curious if the stones of this university “remember” the spells that have been cast over them for generations and thus take the spells more easily. I do not know if that is true or not—perhaps I am being a little bit romantic, or perhaps it has something to do with the unique abilities of stones from Below.

Insulation spells are used all over the worlds, both Below and Above. They are used in hospitals, offices, and hotels as well as in homes. They tend to be more common in older buildings that have not yet been retrofitted for mundane insulation, although there are still some places who consider the cost of refurbishment to be less than the cost of renewal spells.

In short, I value insulation very highly, not only for the good it does for me and my inability to stand the cold, but also for how it helps people stay comfortable and safe, protecting them from heatstroke and from frostbite.

Assignment:

Hardest enchantment to live without? There were a lot of options for that one, but the first one that came to Nai’s mind was prompted by last year’s…well, to be blunt, last year’s disaster.

The most important enchantment I can think of is any enchantment related to security. Enchantments that prevent entry from people without special keys, or forced entry, or prevent glass from breaking, or prevent locks from being picked, or that make a loud noise and alert the police when a place has been broken into.

Admittedly, this is not what someone might conventionally call a case of “I cannot live without it.” It isn’t, really—you could live for quite a long time without security enchantments. But it would not be a pleasant life. It would not be a life without amazing amounts of stress—in some cases, it could even cause physical problems for people.

Ever since the incident at Haunted Hallows, I think it is safe to say that no one in either world feels safe without security enchantments. We do not feel safe in our beds, we do not feel safe in our homes. We do not feel safe dropping off our children at school or going to festivals or going on hikes in remote locations. We do not feel safe in any place or doing anything without the knowledge that someone has gone to a lot of trouble to keep us all safe from danger. No one now will be happy living in a house or an apartment or a dorm that is not fully prepared to protect them against the same sort of invasion and terror we suffered last year.

Technically, again, this is a case less of “cannot live without it” than it is of “do not want to live without it” or “afraid to live without it.” But as I mentioned earlier, there is the potential for physical problems without security—and by physical problems, I do mean injuries and even deaths.

Let’s start with the obvious example: someone with a weak heart wakes up in the middle of the night to a creaking of the floorboards outside their bedroom door. They suffer a fatal heart attack and die, all because, in all likelihood, thermal expansion and contraction was acting in their house, or perhaps their pet spectrefox had gotten up in the middle of the night from the end of the bed to get a drink of water and was on the way back. For a less extreme example, someone could try installing non-magical security devices on upstairs windows or on the top of the roof. They slip on ice or a wet roof, or their ladder gets knocked over by a stiff breeze, and they fall to the ground and break their legs, putting them out of work for a long time and making it difficult for them to support their family.

Without the knowledge that no cannibal can break into their house, people can engage in risky and rash behavior. They might keep loaded weapons in their house, or refuse to let people inside during extreme weather. These people certainly could not have lived without security enchantments.

I am not condemning any person’s fear in this case—I know what it is like to be terrified that you and your loved ones are going to die. That is why I am so grateful for security systems and enchantments to keep us all safe from both external threats and the danger of our own fear.
