One-and-a-half weeks after her move to Destiny City, Katherine walked into the city's Barnes and Nobles in search of good, high-quality books worthy to be of her growing collection.
Two weeks prior, her parents had bribed her with twenty dollars should she, in the entire period of moving, not utter a single word of complaint. Having had followed through with the task--albeit with much difficulty--Katherine found herself with a new twenty-dollar bill in her pocket, ready to be spent of her choosing. When she had moved, most of Katherine's books were not taken along, so only a few of her select favorites traveled with her to Destiny City. Thus being so, Katherine decided to spend the twenty dollars in starting a new book collection that would hopefully grow, in time, to be as large as her previous one.
She slowly looked through the shelves of July's featured favorites, scanning the books to see if one stood out to her. A blue-colored tome caught her eye, so Katherine picked it up and examined the front cover. Go Set a Watchman, by Harper Lee. Might be a good read. Katherine leaned against the bookshelf and preceded to scan the back of the book and skim through the introduction. Seeing that the book seemed interesting, she made herself comfortable in her position of leaning against the shelf and began to read, not at all realizing that by taking residence against the shelf, she was blocking the aisle from anyone who wished to pass.

Ciel had decided to take the day off from training with the intent to go to the book store. Aside from just generally looking for new books to read in her rare spare time, Ciel was looking for a specific book. Her mother's last book to be published had just been released and she want to make sure she picked up a copy.
She had forgotten to do her laundry so she decided to just where her crystal uniform. As she entered and made her way to the new release section she saw another girl who looked about her age blocking the way. "Pardon moi." She said as she slid past the girl. She noticed the blue book in the girl's hand and her eyes were drawn to the author. "Oh I didn't know that she was still writing!" She commented. She of course knew of Harper Lee and had read her most famous work, To Kill a Mockingbird.Sakura Faerie x I'm so sorry this is so late, I suck sweatdrop

"Huh?"
Katherine was struck out of her reading trance (and she was just getting to a good part of the story, too) from the voice which had suddenly spoken to her. As she looked up from her book, Katherine saw a girl around her age, maybe a year or so older, with a tanned complexion and silver hair. She instantly realized, from the way she was occupying the book aisle and from what she distantly recalled the girl had said (something sounding like Pardon me, except it definitely wasn't in english) that she was directly blocking the aisle from any sort or form of human passage.
"Oh, I'm so sorry for blocking you."
By this point, Katherine was feeling mightily embarrassed, both at herself, and herself, her cheeks slightly coloring red. Half of her, the modest half, was embarrassed at standing in someone's way and getting noticed, while the other half, the prideful bit in her personality, was embarrassed at having to apologize because she could have just avoided the whole conflict by using the brain before she started to read, with a pinch of her just being embarrassed at being embarrassed because saying sorry shouldn't be something people were embarrassed about.
However, it didn't seem like the girl was offended in any way at her obstruction of the book aisle. Rather she seemed...friendly, to say the least.
As the blood cooled in her cheeks, she managed to, in the back of her mind, audibly comprehend the girl's question.
"You've read Lee too?"
Katherine didn't know many people around her age who did. Apparently, in the eyes of her schoolmates (previous schoolmates, she had to remind herself), Lee's books just didn't seem as interesting as other fantasy books that have been coming out recently. She would protest, but not aloud, because that would mean getting attention. Aurelius Ambrosius You don't suck...I do. /throws glitter everywhere/

"Oh no worries I know what its like to get lost in a good book." She said with a giggle dismissing the other girls embarrassment at the faux pas. She grabbed the book she had come for and clutched it to her chest. She paused taking in the sadness of knowing this would be the last of her mother's books she ever purchased.
She was brought out of her melancholy by the other girl talking to her. "Um yeah, my mama made me read To Kill a Mockingbird when I was eleven. Its not what I normally read but it was really moving. I cried alot when I read it." She admitted with a slight blush on her cheeks.
"So is that like a sequel?" She asked curious.

Katherine acknowledged the other girls's confession of crying. She remembered checking To Kill a Mockingbird out from the library, and reading it in bed one cozy Saturday morning. And she remember sobbing her face out at multiple points throughout the book, and using up nearly an entire box of Kleenex by the book's conclusion. Not that she would admit that to anyone, but she could relate, internally, inside her head with the girl.
And talking about the girl, Katherine caught the question about the other book by Lee, the one she had just been reading. "Oh, well, actually," Katherine said, examining the interior cover of the book, "it seems like this book, Go Set a Watchman was published like before To Kill a Mockingbird was. See? Weird, isn't it? I would think it was a sequel as well, providing what I've read so far."As she looked up from the book, Katherine could help but notice a different book in between the girls's arms."Umm...I hope you don't like mind me asking, but what book is it that are you getting?"

Ciel nodded along as the girl explained the new book. "Huh that is weird." She said with a puzzled look on her face.
Then she suddenly remembered her manners. "Oh I'm Ciel by the way. Its nice to meet you." She said with a friendly smile.
She felt her cheeks get warm and a blush start to form at the girl's question. "Um no I don't mind. Its actually a book my mama wrote, its the newest..." A part of her was about to say last but she tried to resist the urge to morose. "...book in her series. Its a fantasy story." She explained turning the book around to show the other girl.

"And my name is Katherine. It's really nice meeting you as well."Katherine looked over at the book Ciel showed her. She didn't recognize the series nor the author (and she had read quite a large collection of books, especially in the fantasy genre) so it must either be a lesser known author or come from a lesser distributed publisher. Besides, Ciel mentioned that it was her mother than wrote it, so maybe it was only found in certain bookstores. "Wow...That's like really cool, having a mom for an author and such. Does she do her writing at home? Do you have any say in what she writes?"Katherine was seriously interested. It wasn't often she met face to face with someone who knows an author, and actually have a conversation with them. She could dream of meeting big name authors (she had met a few in a book convention a while back), and holding actual conversations with them, not just a simple, Hi, thank you for supporting me, here is a signed book, although she wouldn't exactly complain about the signed book part...but still.

"Um she did...but she's...well she gone now." She admitted, though she wasn't able to say the word dead.
"Yeah kind of she used to ask me to read her rough drafts and give her my thoughts before she sent it to her editor." She said sadly. Those were happy memories for her, and the thought that she would never get to do that again was depressing.

"Oh. Well...Uhhhh..." Katherine didn't quite know what to say. Inside, she was having an inner turmoil of what reaction she should give. It wasn't her place to judge, so she shouldn't make a large reaction. Sympathy might be taken as pity, so that path was out too. And just acting as if the statement hadn't impacted her (to which it very much did) would make her look apathetic. At this point, Katherine wasn't sure if there was any reaction she could do that had a 0% chance of causing a negative reaction. So she chose to just avoid it.
She began searching around the air for a new topic, most preferably one that was not as awkward as the previous one. How a discussion about books had led to...Katherine had no idea. Regardless, a new topic to talk about would be the best idea for the moment, as far as Katherine was concerned. Changing discussion points tend to be the number one best way to avoid and conflict or hurt feelings...hopefully.
As she looked around for discussion means, her eye caught the shiny emblem of the Destiny City School District (or whatever it was called), hung behind the counter one aisle down."Uhm...What school do you go to? I mean, what like school will you be attending this year?"

The look on Katherine's face made Ciel regret her words. Why was she talking about her problems with someone she just met. She kicked herself for making the conversation awkward. So She was happy to have the conversation shift to a new topic.
"Oh I'll be attending Crystal Academy, what about you?"

"Really? I'll be going to Crystal Academy too!"Katherine was happy, and the mood around her brightened up. It was so nice to know that Ciel would be going to Crystal Academy. One less face she wouldn't be complete strangers with. However, having seen the size of the campus, Katherine had doubts she would see Ciel often along the halls. And they probably weren't even going into the same grade.
She shook her head clear of her thoughts, and focused back to the conversation. "I'm really excited about the facility and teachers. Can't say so much about the uniforms though."
