xxThe announcement was brief. Short and sweet, to the point. But it sent chills through everyone's bones, turning Olympia's veins to ice. Her roommate, Alice, a shape shifter, turned her wide, bright eyes on the blonde girl. "What does that mean, Olly? Do you know anything about it?" Alice asked softly, biting her lip. The other girl shrugged, glancing up at the intercom speaker over their heads. "I'm not sure. I'm gonna go ask around, alright?" She untangled herself from the blankets on her lap, placing Dreamcatcher in her cage and exiting the room. The halls of the dorms were padded with thick carpet, paintings hanging on every bare inch of wall. The school had two wings- one for males and one for females. It also had a central area, where all the classrooms and the dining hall were, as well as the rec room. Olympia's feet didn't make a noise as she walked down the hallway, towards the central building.

xxWhat did the headmaster mean? How had someone hacked into the records? Olympia had heard of people trying to hack into the school's database, but - at least to her knowledge - no one had ever been successful. All of their most secret information was stored in those records, including detailed reports of their abilities. The blonde girl shivered slightly, pulling her sweater tighter around her and glancing out a window as she passed it. The weather outside was cool and crisp, and autumn leaves fell from the tall trees outside. It was free time in the late afternoon, so not many people had classes. Not to mention most classes were just a few students to a single professor. Olympia made her way to the rec room. A lot of people were hanging out, obviously unfazed by the announcement. This made the petite girl frown deeply. She walked to a pair of scrawny twins playing air hockey tilting her head. "Guys? Do you... not really care about what the headmaster said?" she asked carefully. The twins stopped and scrutinized her, rolling their eyes. "It doesn't really matter." "Yeah, no one knows how to interpret the information." "It's encoded, blondie," they told her, scowling and returning to their game.

xxOlympia bit her lip and nodded, retreating to the fireplace in the room and seating herself in one of the padded armchairs. She stared down at her hands, her mind reeling. It seems like not many people are worried... I know the headmaster said that they're taking all precautions, but is that enough? she thought tiredly, pulling out her cell phone and beginning a message to Alice. to: alice || from: olly || message: no one seems worried. I will let you know if I find anything out. She sent the message, rubbing the back of her neck. Olympia knew Alice would urge her to use her abilities, have someone tell her what was going on, but she simply wouldn't. The blonde girl pulled her legs up into the chair, staring at the flickering fire.

❝ ɪᴛs ᴀ ᴠᴇʀʏ, ᴠᴇʀʏ ᴍᴀᴅ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ...❞

A brief muffling sound that vibrated through the speakers of the room signalled an incoming announcement. The boy merely continued to lay motionless in his bed, too beguiled by the words of his novel to even consider paying any attention to what the headmaster was about to say.

"Good afternoon students of Oak Ridge Institute of the Gifted... I regret to inform you that our school's database has recently been hacked. By whom, we do not know, but rest assured—we will find out. Until then, please, do not brood. You are all as safe as you were yesterday."

A pair of hazel eyes slowly lifted from their current immersion as he let those words sink in. The school's database had been hacked—every single file, report, record, everything was now in the hands of someone who was more than likely a threat. And yet the Headmaster expected them to just brush it off as though everything was just fine and dandy. The boy peered over at his roommates, who both appeared to be unfazed by the announcement as one continued to strum at his guitar while the other played with his laptop. "Guys," Miles said shortly, the abruptness of his deep voice enough to startle the two. "You did hear the what the headmaster just said... right?" One appeared to be dumbfounded and the other shrugged nonchalantly. "Dude, who cares?"

"Who cares? The school's ******** database has been hacked, Nathan. Our records, our files, everything has been stolen and you're going to tell me that you don't care?!"

"Yeah," he replied simply. "You heard the guy, he's got a handle on the situation. We have no reason to worry." With that, Nathan popped his earbuds back into his ears and refocused his attention on the laptop.

Jaw tensing in irritation, Miles marked the page of his novel and slid out of bed walked across the room to find a shirt from his drawers. He pulled on a loose grey shirt over his head and adjusted the hem as he made his way out of the room, down the narrow corridor towards the central building where the rec room was stationed. It was usually packed around this time of day and he knew that he was bound to find someone in their right mind. Someone who actually gave a damn about what the headmaster said. Pushing his fingers through his untamed brunette locks as he neared the room, Miles drew his hair back into a low ponytail that fell down his back, a few strands falling loose and dangling by his temples. The male paused as he walked through the doorway to let his fierce eyes scope out the room, the smallest of smiles ghosting at the corner of his mouth when he spotted Olly—one of his few female friends.

Miles moved towards the fireplace and lowered himself into the cushioned chair beside hers. "What do you think about this?" he questioned, figuring she'd know exactly what he was talking about.

xxOlympia's brain was reeling. She crossed her legs beneath her, staring at the fire as she thought. Usually, she would have been sent a precognition about what happened. Even if not much in advance, it might have helped. A deep frown marred her face as she thought, unconsciously itching at a scab on her hand. She was surprised when a shadow neared her, raising her eyes to watch her friend Miles lower himself into the chair next to hers. She smiled at him, until he spoke. Her smile faded, and she made a face, turning back to look at the fire with a soft sigh. In all honesty, the girl didn't really know what to think, and it was bothering her desperately.

xx"I don't know... I don't think everything's going to be rainbows and sunshine, though. I just don't understand why I didn't know anything about it in advance," Olly confessed, rubbing her palms on her jeans and looking at him. She gave a shrug of her shoulders, tucking a stray lock of hair out of her face. Olympia rather liked Miles. He was one of the few guys in the school she was able to get along with. He wasn't overly "cool" or nerdy, and he understood her. They were two of the few students with mental abilities as their gift, rather than physical ones. Through that, she felt like they had somewhat of a bond.

xxOlympia situated herself in her chair, draping her legs over one of the arms and leaning against the other. She faced him, her socked feet wiggling a bit. "What do you think about it?" she rounded the question, twiddling her thumbs. She knew he would probably care, like her and unlike most students in the school. To most, whatever the headmaster said was definite. But she knew that the big man said whatever he had to, really, instead of what was the truth. And she had a bad feeling about this particular situation. Chills ran up the girl's spine, even as she sat so close to a fire.

Miles could only sigh in sorrow at Olympia's answer, dull brown eyes now watching the fire while his arms rested on the cushioned armrests. Part of him had sort of hoped that the girl would have had at least a small precognition, and would have had some answers, but now it seemed as though they were in the same boat. The flames of the fire were beginning to die down, so without getting up, Miles' eyes shifted to the steel fire poker that was leaning against the fireplace and he lazily lifted his forefinger, causing the poker to levitate. He smirked softly to himself as his gaze drifted back towards the fireplace, simultaneously moving his hand in the same direction which allowed the fire poker to follow. As it began to move the logs of wood around on it's own, Olympia returned his question.

"I'm in the same boat as you," he began, turning his head to gaze over at the other. "And I want answers as much as you do, but at the same time I think it would be wise to wait a few days before we go looking for them." The flames crackled and popped as the logs were rearranged, and after a moment Miles let the fire poker drift back to it's original place against the wall. He had never been one to act on instinct. He was very strategic with his actions, liked to think things through thoroughly before doing anything drastic. Acting impulsively, he felt, would only get them in trouble. Just then, he caught a whiff of something rather chocolatey wafting throughout the air. "Is that hot chocolate, mate?" Miles turned in his seat to ask the boy walking past. "Yup," he answered with a brief point of his finger towards the table in the far corner. Well, Miles knew where he was headed next. "You want some?" he asked Olly, lifting his perfectly shaped eyebrows questioningly.

xxThe ever so brief look of disappointment across Miles' face made her wince. She knew he had hoped she would have seen something, but she hadn't. Olympia watched him lift his finger, manipulating the poker so it rose and fed the flames. The fire roared to life, making her smile. She got situated in the fluffy armchair, looking over to him as he spoke and meeting his gaze. She listened to him, her eyes soft, and frowned slightly. He was right. Their next move had to be strategic and planned. Unlike what her roommate seemed to want, Olly knew that Miles was right, and they couldn't just jump right in. "But maybe nothing will happen... It could all end up fine, y'know?" she said to him hopefully, a soft smile rising on her face, then falling. She gave a sigh.

xxWhen Miles proposed hot chocolate to her, Olympia's bright smile reappeared, and she nodded. The girl jumped to her feet, her socks landing silently on the heavy rug. She tugged at the sleeves of her sweater, folding her hands around the hem and heading towards the table. Glancing over her shoulder to be sure Miles was on her heels, her blonde locks bobbed slightly. "Hot chocolate is my favorite," she chirped, her steps lightly but bouncy. The dark mood that had fogged her head was cleared as the thick smell of chocolate wafted through her nostrils, making memories roll through her mind like a slideshow. Most of them were of her mother, and some of her father. Bittersweet. She pushed them from her head, preparing a mug and piling it with marshmallows.
