Zah had been in the pride for a little while now. Originally he had joined because he had heard stories of the leader they had. Zah thought the King sounded wonderful, he had respect for someone who went out and got what they wanted by any means necessary. He had thought that he was coming to a pride that lived life to the fullest... he had thought wrong.

It wasn't till he had started hearing the murmurs of others conversations that Zah began to question everything he had thought before. Now the darkly coloured lion was confused. He didn't know which side of the fence that he stood on. Nor did he know who would be safe to talk to. This pride seemed to be full of double agents and you could never be sure of who was on what side and who was just trying to trick you into saying the wrong thing. As a result Zah normally kept to himself. Like tonight, he had done a quick patrol of the border then he had returned to the pride finding a secluded spot by the river where he doubted anyone would come looking, before long he would have to go out on another patrol.

User Image It was another beautiful night that hid dark and terrible secrets. Well...they weren't really secrets, were they? Most of the older pride members knew the horrors that had befallen their lands not terribly long ago, but newcomers and cubs alike were living under false pretenses. As a Lady Jioni knew better than to run her mouth, but as she lived her daily life she pined for the return of the old family.

She put on a pretty face and a cheery, calm air as any Lady should expect to, but inside she was boiling with thoughts of how to assist in the uprising that would surely start soon. She wasn't close to the king but her position in the pride might be made useful. She just had to know when to play her cards so her world wouldn't come crashing down on her.

As she thought she padded quietly to the river to get a drink. She almost didn't notice a dark lion sitting not far from where she had paused to lower her head to the water. She drank on, not turning to look at him but keeping her senses sharp. As a Lady there were few that were on par with her in terms of rank and only the royalty stood above her. She had never seen this male before and, as such, knew he wasn't on her level. That didn't mean she wouldn't talk to him, but it did mean she wouldn't go out of her way to greet him like she should do for her. She was always interested in newcomers...perhaps this lion would be able to help her. She would just have to figure out what side he stood on, if any.

Zah perked up when he saw the lioness coming to the waters edge. He had not seen the lioness before and it was not lost on him how beautiful she was. He wondered if she would be willing to talk to him, the dark male had yet to make a single friend in the pride and he was starting to get really lonely.

"Hello there." he greeted her. He was trying to figure out how to approach someone here in the pride, there was so many variables. Was she friendly? Was she a support of the King? Did she side with the rebellion?

"I don't mean to disturb you, but I haven't seen another all night and I couldn't resist coming over to talk to you." Zah smiled, it was a nervous smile. It was strange for the lion to have such nerves over speaking to someone knew this pride was bringing out a side of him he didn't know that he had. For better or worse though it was his home.

Jioni kept her head down by the water as the male addressed her, feigning disinterest. It was the way nobles were expected to act, really. Poised, refined, aloof. She played the part very well. Her nose and ears were in tune to the male, though, keeping his position and tone of voice in check.

Finally she lifted her head, licking her lips a few times to make sure not one drop of water dripped from her fur. She gave the male a once-over before meeting his gaze, her bright eyes meeting his dark ones. He seemed to have the body type of a guard...interesting.

"That's quite all right. I could use some company," she said, her voice light and airy. "What is your name and rank? I can't say I've seen you before and I'm quite familiar with those in the pride." She had to be, really. Being a noble meant you didn't do any grunt work. While some lions allowed themselves to be lazy and dull because of it, Jioni made sure to keep her mind sharp and tasked herself with knowing everyone that was in the pride.

An audible sigh of relief passed through Zah's lips. He was glad that the female had accepted his company. He still had many unanswered questions about who she was and what she thought, but he also knew it wasn't likely he would find out the answers to most of his questions today or possibly even ever.

"My name is Zah, I am a guard." he told her proudly. Zah liked being a large strong lion and he felt that guard was just about the only position in the pride that really suited him.

"I'm fairly new to the pride, thats probably why you didn't know me before now." he told her with a bow of his head. "What about you may I ask for your name in return?" he asked. His voice was calm and kind. He was pleased that he had someone to talk to, she was the first one he had really gone out of his way to meet. He found himself drawn into her bright eyes.

Well, he certainly wasn't shy. That was good, in Jioni's eyes. Guards needed to be strong and stout and not afraid to make waves. Guards that bowed to anyone and did as they were told without question were useless.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Zah, and I'll surely remember you the next time we meet." Part pleasantry, part threat should he wish to take it that way. She was quiet as he asked her her own name and position. Polite, at least, even if he was a bit bold to ask rather than waiting to be told. He was new to the pride, though, he wasn't wise to their ways yet.

"I am Lady Jioni," she said with a little bob of her head.

Zah felt a lump in his throat when the word Lady slipped from the lips of the lioness. He had entered this pride knowing how he had felt about the new king, he adored him and his willingness to do anything that it took, however now that he had been here he felt his opinion wavering changing. Zah for the most part had avoided others in the pride, he had done his job not becaue he felt loyalty to the leader anymore but more because the pride seemed to be filled of good souls even if their leader was going about things the wrong way.

Now however he found himself with someone who held a high rank in the pride. Zah had heard whispers in he pride that those who held high ranks, held them because they had done favours for the new king. Zah eyed the female wondering if perhaps she was one of those who had done things for the king to gain her ranking.

Zah swallowed and tried to found his words. "Well Lady Jioni it is nice to meet you." he said smoothly trying to hide his sudden discomfort. "Is there anything I might be able to do for you?"

Jioni picked up on Zah's discomfort instantly. He wasn't very good at hiding his emotions, but then again, he was a guard. Generally they weren't well-versed in the ways of keeping things to themselves. They ran on adrenaline and emotion and there was nothing wrong with that, it just made it easier for others to read their true feelings.

Rather than ignore it, she pressed the issue. "There may be something you can help me with," she said, her bright eyes burning in the darkness as she moved a little closer to Zah. "I can't help but notice your change in mood. Could you tell me why that is?"

It had to be something to do with her rank, that much was obvious. He hadn't been nervous before she had stated it. There were rumors about how some had gained their titles, but she had been a Lady from birth, long before the coup.

Oh no he had gotten himself in trouble now. he thought to himself. He tried to figure out what he should tell her. How to answer her question with as little fallout as possible.

He gave her a shy smile, "I have never met a lady or a lord in the pride. I was just surprised by your rank." he told her. It was mostly the truth he was just leaving out the bit that he was fearful of the fact that her allegiance may lie with a king that he wasn't so sure he respected anymore.

"I am still learning the social nuances of the pride I suppose." he admitted. He had never belonged to a pride before Mwezi so the social and poliical aspects of it were something he was still desperately trying to learn.

He regained his composure quickly, Jioni noticed, and she lessened her intense gaze a bit. New to the pride...quick to learn...hm. Perhaps there was something here she could work with. The resistance needed some more strength to it and Zah might just be the lion they were looking for.

"Well," she said, swishing her tail. "If you'd like some lessons I wouldn't mind helping. As a Lady it's part of my duty to make sure newcomers don't step on anyone's toes." A lie, but he didn't need to know that. Hopefully he'd agree to the lessons and she could pry a bit more to see if he already had an opinion on what had happened, or if he knew at all.

"Don't feel as though you have to say yes," she added. "I'm content to let you be as well. Just a friendly offer."

Zah smiled, perhaps this was exactly what he needed, an in so to speak. "I would love if you could help me out." Zah answered. Glancing up towards the star studded sky Zah could see that to the east the sky was beginning to get lighter.

"I must go though I still have to do one more patrol before the pride retires for the night. Could I meet you here again tomorrow and then we can get started?" he asked her. His tone was polite and full of hope.

Jioni nodded as Zah asked if they could meet here again. "Yes, that sounds fine. Tomorrow it is, Zah. I look forward to it."

She didn't want to keep him from his duties, after all. She turned to go after giving him a very small half smile, keeping her head held high. The lightening of the sky made her wonder how many days it had been since the coup and how many more were left before things were put back to normal. Well. As normal as they could be.

Zah watched Jioni go. The female had presence that was for damn sure. Once she had left his line of sight her turned to head in the opposite direction, he would make his way around the border of the pride and then turn in for the day.

His mind stayed on the lioness during his patrol. She was beautiful and he was pretty sure she could help him figure out where he should stand in terms of the pride and its leader. He had much to learn that was for damn sure.
