 Today was the day, the unexciting day, well at least for Scarlet. Today the foreign exchange student was coming to live with the O'Hara family. Why, you may wonder? It's because her parents and all their self righteousness, they wanted to have someone they could learn from and possibly help the child as well. Scarlet didn't really care about the small adventure her parents were bringing to their home. The dark haired brunette didn't even know the name of this person, all she knew was that he was a male.
It was almost one o'clock on a August Saturday afternoon, school started that next Monday and she was dreading it. Scarlet was what you called an outcast, she really didn't have any friends, most of the time stayed to herself and wasn't very outspoken. Not that she didn't mind, she liked being the invisible girl that no one bothered. The only good thing about this year, was that it was senior year and then she would be out of this hell hole of a city in Austin, Texas for good. Scarlet was laying on her coral paisley comforter reading a book called Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick, she was in another world of fallen angels and crazy adventures when she heard her mother's high pitched voice calling her from downstairs. "Scarlet, come down here. He'll be here any moment now and we want to welcome him." Scarlet rolled her eyes and closed the book with a heavy thud, plopping the book on her bed where it bounced up for a minute. She walked over to her fully body mirror which was standing upright next to her dresser, she was wearing jean cut off shorts, a yellow tank with a flower bandeau under it. Her long dark locks in wavy curls down her back and some resting over her shoulder. Scarlet shrugged and made her way down the stair case.
Her parents had a pretty large house considering that both her parents were lawyers with very successful law firms of their own. But with only three people, with five bedrooms and four and a half baths, the house was probably even bigger than it should be considering that Scarlet was an only child because her parents gave up on having another child after her mom's third miscarriage in two years. Once down in the foyer area, Scarlet stood among her blonde haired mother and her dark haired father, waiting for the car to pull up to their house and to welcome the exchange student.

Considering he was fluent in both Mandarin and Korean, he assumed maybe his parents would pick Korea. He had always wanted to visit South Korea, so maybe they would give it a go. Never, in a million years, would he have imagined they would be sending him to America. To think, of all the places. It wasn't that he had anything against Americans, but... honestly? It was on the other side of the world for God's sake. By the time they had informed him of his future, he didn't have nearly enough time to look into the language. English was not easy to learn. Hell, they had an entirely different system. Their letters were romanized, and to be honest, it gave him a headache trying to figure it out. And their pronunciation? Crazy. By the time he left China, the most Yixing could say was hello, goodbye, yes, no, I am Yixing, and bathroom.
xxxxxxxThe plane ride to America was equally migraine-causing, seeing as he was seated next to an extremely talkative American girl. He thought her name was Lizzie, but whenever he tried to say it, she kept correcting him. "It's Lizzie, not lee-see," she repeated over and over. He didn't understand what he was saying wrong because in his head, he was correct. The throbbing in his temple had flourished into a full migraine by the time she finally asked his name... Or at least, that's what he thought she was asking. "Yixing." He showed her how to write it, but she kept pronouncing it incorrectly. It was Yixing, like yee-sing. But she didn't understand him either, and finally, he just smiled and nodded. "I said it right?" she asked, not that he understood. She looked very hopeful, though, she he nodded again and leaned his head against the window.
xxxxxxxYixing slept for a while. He easily slept for nine of the thirteen hour flight. He wasn't particularly upset about missing the Pixar movie marathon they played on the little TVs, considering they were in English with Mandarin subtitles. He hated having to read while watching something. It totally took away from the actual movie. However, at one point he did wake up and see Lizzie crying over something that occurred in the movie. It was the one about the sisters, where one of them had ice powers? He had never cared to see the entire movie anyway, but he was surprised to see her wiping away tears. He reached into his bag and pulled out a small package of tissues, handing it to her. She smiled, and as annoying as she was, it pleased him to see her happy again.
xxxxxxxIt was a relief to finally arrive in America. He bowed to Lizzie and said, "Goodbye. Hěn gāoxìng rènshí nǐ." (Nice meeting you) Then he hurried off, eager to get the hell off the plane. His legs were stiff and his neck was cramped. It was strange to say, but he was already a bit homesick. However, he went on his way. Upon hailing a cab, he realized he had no idea what to say to the man. Luckily, one of the other passengers from the flight translated for him, and soon enough Yixing was on his way to his new home. About an hour later he was outside the house. He paid the cab driver and waved goodbye to him. He was so jet-lagged, he didn't even feel nervous about meeting these new people. Gazing up at the home, he blinked a few times as if he couldn't understand why it was so large and then headed up the sidewalk.

Scarlet heard a car pull up and a car door close. Her parents' started smiling like crazy, their perfect white and straight teeth shining brightly. Her mom started to walk towards the door as it the door bell rang. Her dad turned to Scarlet and looked her in the eyes, "Now Scar, you need to be nice and at least try to be outgoing when he's here. He's in an unknown country and most likely will need all the help he can get. So be nice and cheerful and outgoing, okay?" Scarlet bit her lip, knowing that when her dad called her Scar, she would usually do anything for him. She was such a daddy's girl. She rolled her eyes though and nodded, "But I make no promises on the cheerful and outgoing part, I will smile though." Her dad, Anthony smiled and kissed the top her brown locks. Her mom, Maria, opened the door to see a dark haired Chinese boy. "Hello Yixing, I am Mrs. O'Hara, but you can call me Maria and that is my husband Anthony and our beautiful daughter Scarlet." When her mom said her name, Scarlet smiled softly and gave him a small wave. Her mom moved out of the doorway to let the unfamiliar person into their home. "Here I'll take your bags and Scarlet will show you to your room." Scarlet whipped her head around to look at her father with wide eyes and glared at him, but her father gave her a reassuring smile. She rolled her eyes once more, but motioned for Yixing to follow her. "Follow me and I'll show you to your room.
Scarlet made her way up the staircase as the unknown person followed her up the stairs. "If you have any questions, you can ask my mom and dad and they'll be more than welcome to answer them for you. Your room is up her on the right, right across from one of the bathrooms.' Scarlet stopped in front of a room and opened the door and showed a fully furnished room for the next however long would be Yixing's room. "I'll let you settle in and we'll all be downstairs either in the living room or in the kitchen." Once he was in his room, Scar made her way back down the stairs and went into the kitchen to get herself a bottle of water. "He's awkward,"[/color[ she out loud to no one in general but her mom heard her. "Wouldn't you be too if you were in an unknown country with an unknown family?" Scarlet shrugged as she took a long drink from her water. "I'm already awkward," she said with a small laugh as she made her way to the living room to sit on the couch.

These people were kind enough to take him into their home, after all. Running a hand through his hair, he straightened out his jacket and stood up straight. A smile spread across the young Chinese boy's lips as the door opened, exposing his deep dimples. He understood the first few words she said, like hello and I'm Mrs. O'Hara, but the more she spoke, the more confused he became. However, he didn't want to seem impolite in any way so he reinforced his smile and nodded. He took off his sunglasses and hung them from the neckline of his white t-shirt, glancing over her shoulder as a girl behind her waved. So that must be... Scarlet? Even in his head, he said her name with hesitance.
xxxxxxx Before he could form a coherent thought, the father was speaking. Yixing wasn't really sure what he was saying, but he heard the girl's name again. He caught the look she gave the older man and wondered what he had said. But then the girl was looking at him and gesturing like she wanted him to follow her. Although he didn't know what her words meant, he figured he should probably go with her. As he followed her up the staircase, he took in his surroundings. This house was much nicer than the one he lived in back in Beijing, but it didn't have the same homey feeling. It just didn't seem as... lively. It must be lonely living in such a large house but only having three people.
xxxxxxxYixing nodded as she spoke, but there was a lot of words leaving her lips and he didn't understand any of them except for bathroom. He thought he could probably figure it out. When she finally stopped, he decided this was probably his room. He looked through the doorway and tried not to look too surprised. This room was incredibly well furnished, and he was alarmed by how much money had probably gone into getting it that way. Just affording the far corner of the room would have set him back a few years. For a moment, he wondered if these people weren't just normal people, but royalty. But then he realized how ridiculous that was. What royal family would take in some random Chinese boy? Still... Americans are so strange.
xxxxxxx The boy stepped into the room and looked around, probably a bit overly cautious. He didn't want to break anything. As he was taking in his surroundings, he heard Scarlet say something, but once again, he was unsure. Once again, when she spoke, he stared at the ground. Suddenly, it occurred to him that he was still wearing his shoes. How disrespectful. He felt a pang of guilt before realizing that as Americans, they probably didn't care either way. As she was walking away, he said, "Xièxiè, Scarlet-san." (Thank you.) Her name felt weird as it left his lips, unfamiliar to his tongue. He considered bowing, but she was already rather far and probably wouldn't have noticed. So, he sat down on the bed and ran a hand through his hair, looking down at the floor.
