"COME BACK HERE!"

Sherwood streaked across the grass toward the small retreating figure pulling away from her despite her speed. It was roughly the size of a dog, and about as nimble as a cat. It was not a good mix in her mind as she was having trouble catching up to it to stop it. This area was more wooded than most of the city and therefore the youma, should it decide to, would have plenty of places to hide.

And as that thought crossed her mind that's what the damn thing decided to do, suddenly darting left off the path and into a small clearing toward an outcropping of bushes where it was relatively shaded from view.

Sherwood followed, panting by the time she reached the point where she lost sight of the thing. The poor, puzzled page turned around, trying to figure out where the monster went.

"I'm gonna find you," she promised.

Merlinite felt an aura nearby, perking up. His night had only just started, and he was interested in patrolling and doing some good tonight. Camelot was not around, but Merlinite was not feeling too nervous yet. He could do this, could do some good.

It would be fine, right?

What were the chances of him running into Painite, in an entire city?

Feeling a White Moon aura before too long, Melinite moved toward it, keeping low and all but slithering along the ground as he hurried toward it. He used his tail and powerful claws to help him along, moving quickly and without tiring himself too much. It did not take too long for him to find the Page, not realizing she was hunting a youma as he approached.

"Uh. Hello. Don't freak out, I promise I'm not as uh... bad as I look."

He was still working on good introductions between himself and the White Moon.

Sherwood was focused on her youma and didn't really pay attention to any other auras in the area, a failing that had never served her well before. But she was a single minded girl, a habit in her art, and tended to let her mind block out everything but what she wanted to focus on.

She yelped when she heard a voice and turned around.

Her instincts took over and she saw the half youma, not really hearing what he said before she was batting at him with her bow, wielding it like a baseball bat to try and get him to go away. It was a gut reaction more than a judgement about him. The aura and his appearance did not work in his favor.

It took her several long minutes of bashing at him, probably not to a lot of damage, before she realized he said he was not a threat.

Guarded, Sherwood narrowed her eyes.

"How do I know you don't want to hurt me?"

Merlinite let out an annoyed yelp as she smacked him with her bow, lifting up his arms to try to defend himself and using all of his will force not to lash out at her for her attack. He had to remind himself that he was still very much Chaos aligned, at least in aura, and she had no reason to trust him.

Even if he HAD said he wasn't going to hurt her.

When she finally stopped smacking him, his arms stinging from the repeated hits, he squinted at her but dropped his defensive stance. He took a slow breath to cool his temper, scratching his claws against the base of one of the horns on his head thoughtfully.

"Because I would have already if I wanted to hurt you," he answered, with a huff. "I know what I look like. I'm a General and I'm a youma but... I didn't want to be. I want to be on your side. A knight, like you. I'm not bad, so stop hitting me, please."

That last part came through gritted teeth.

Sherwood still had her bow at the ready, just in case he was lying. Bad guys lied...a lot. At least in her experience in the real world. In the powered world the last bad guy she came across had tried to kill her and very nearly succeeded. So, her trust wasn't exactly at its best at the moment. However, she was willing to stop hitting him until he proved that she should resume the activity.

"I guess that's true."

But she shuddered full body to think it. Those claws looked like they could do a lot of damage if they tried.

"I can't help you become a knight. I don't even know how I became one."

Though she squinted up at the tree and tried to figure out if people became youmas or the other way around. Either way it seemed really icky and she wasn't sure if she was comfortable trying to dust the youma in front of one of its brethren.

"There's a youma up there. I was trying to figure out how to get it down so I could...um, kill it?"

"Well, a lot of folks can't help me with that one, but that still doesn't mean I want to hurt them. Hell, I don't even know if anyone can help me. I want to help you guys though, even if I can't... you know. Be one of you any more."

It was always a sad thought for him, as he had finally settled on purifying and was actually really looking forward to learning what his Wonder was, and maybe even getting to go to space. But fate had other plans for him, as did Painite, and he was taken down a path he had never even imagined.

He was doing what he could to deal with it.

"Youma? I could probably get it down for you. Want me to do that? Or are you just going to start hitting me again?" He was not going to help her if she was still resolved to dust him as she was the other youma. He swished his tail behind him, looking up to where she indicated her target was.

"Papa Camelot probably can. I can talk to him for you."

She was completely unaware that the two were well acquainted. If anyone could help him, she reasoned, it was probably the elder knight. She held him in high esteem for a reason, and not just because of his age or rank. He truly seemed to care about people. He had always shown her respect and kindness, even when he did not know her well.

She sighed and supposed she deserved that. But, in her defense, he had been large and monster like. Could he really blame her for gut reactions?

"I promise I won't hit you anymore. I'm sorry."

She could use his help with the youma, all things considered.

"I don't want to leave it out here. I could hurt people. Please."

She looked at him pitifully and then at the tree where the youma was, no doubt, wondering about its fate.

Merlinite smiled and nodded his head. He knew Camelot very well, but he often had a lot of people telling him to go visit the Royal Knight, and he did not have to tell them all that he already was, right? It was nice that they wanted to help him, and he knew he had at least gone to the right place to start.

If anyone could help him, he heard time and again, it was Camelot.

"Hey, don't worry about the hitting me thing. I am a youma, and that is kinda what you're supposed to do, right? It would be bad if you thought all youma and Negas were what they said they were." He used to pretend he was a nice guy, after all, before his lies caught up with him and he realized he actually did like the White Moon.

Taking a breath, Merlinite turned and looked up the tree, spotting the youma. He leaped at the trunk and climbed up it with his claws, having no trouble scaling right up the tree to chase the youma. It saw him coming and tried to leap away, but Merlinite was on it like a cat on a mouse, leaping after it and catching it in his claws before they both slammed into the ground. He used his grip to crush the thing, and it burst into dust with little effort. It all went a lot better than even he was expecting, and he looked up at Sherwood with a broad, proud and fang-y grin.

Sherwood nodded, still looking sheepish. She would have to do something to make this up to him. Maybe he liked cupcakes. She had never met him as a Negaverse agent and that was probably a good thing as her track record with Negas right now was not the best.

When he climbed up the tree to catch the youma she waited for him to drop it down so she could deal with it as she planned. It never dropped. Instead, she watched, amazed, as he dusted the youma like it was no big deal, crushing it to dust with his bare, er, clawed hand. The whole thing was over in what felt like the blink of an eye.

"Wow. Way to go! You're, like, a youma Slayer."

That's when it hit her. Clear. Brilliant. Her grin widened to beaming.

"Puffy the Youma Slayer!"

"Puffy?!"

He stood up and brushed off his dusty scales and clothes, shaking his head. He looked very annoyed, not quite getting her joke until he realized the double meaning.

"Oh damn it. You mean like Puff the magic dragon? Oh, great, thanks. That's great."

He threw his hands up, looking incredibly frustrated, but he did actually like having a nickname. It meant she was starting to like him, right? Unless she was just teasing him, and now she was going to be teasing him the whole time whenever she talked to him.

So he could not hide his grin, shaking his head.

"Though that was pretty cool, wasn't it?"

"Oh calm down, Puffy. It's perfect."

Sherwood rolled her eyes at the drama and crossed her arms over her chest. It was perfect, damn it, and whether he liked it or not he was stuck with the name now. What made sense in her mind didn't always make sense in others. She was used to that and no longer held it against them.

"That was super cool." She confirmed, still grinning. "I wish I could fight like that."

The best she could do was whack someone with her bow until she upgraded and got the arrows to go with it.

"If you're not a bad guy, though, where are you staying? It's not like you can stay with them, right?"

At least, she hoped he wasn't trying to. Lord knew how dangerous that would be since he admitted he wanted to switch sides. She was pretty sure he wouldn't be welcome there if other people knew what she did. Or, he'd been playing her like a sap all along. She really hoped not.

Merlinite squinted at her, but she seemed set on the new nickname, so he supposed he would just have to get used to it. As long as she did not call him that around 'papa' Camelot, it should be alright...

Or any of his other senshi friends...

"Uh. Well, I have a place to stay. I uhm. I live under the library, actually, in a basement that Camelot said I could use. He uh. He patrols at the library all the time, I guess, so he knows the area. He keeps it pretty safe." Merlinite, of course, did not know that Camelot was the librarian there.

He was still on Chaos' side, after all. In theory, he could be pulled back from where he was and to them, and they could try to pull information out of him the hard way. It was better for him to not know anything important.

"A lot of people have offered to help take care of me, which is really nice. I guess I didn't really expect it."

She knew Camelot to usually be around the library, too. Maybe he was connected to it, though she didn't know how.

"Oh, Good."

Sherwood already had ideas about how she could help her new friend, bringing him food and things he would need in his little lair. Yes, she was aware that he was only half dragon but any dragon at all needed a lair in her mind complete with cozies and treasures. She had every intention of helping him with that.

"I'll come by tomorrow. Maybe you can show me around."

She grinned at him, to let him know he'd made a new friend.
