"By far the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it."

Marcus was sitting on the edge of a lab table while men ran around sticking needles and electrodes all over Marcus' body. This was there big break. They'd finally finished it. Finished him. A robot that they believed to be self aware. For years their team was trying to create artificial intelligence that was as close to human as possible, but there was always something off. The robots before were missing that drive that made people, real people. They didn't have depth of emotion. They couldn't understand complex relationships. They said they were self-aware, but they just weren't able to prove it in any way. They were missing a soul. A driving force that made them think for themselves and know what it was they wanted.

This time, when they created Marcus, they actually used the brain of a real human being. Of course the man had died, and they had preserved his brain for this day. They connected a real human brain, to a computer brain to make the perfect combination which was Marcus. Although, they wouldn't know for sure if he was truly a self-aware, human robot. There was just no way to test something like that. They didn't know how much of Marcus was running off the human brain, and how much was running off the computer hard drive.

"Can you tell me your name?" A doctor in a lab coat, holding a clipboard and pen was speaking to Marcus. He turned to face him, but Marcus' eyes couldn't leave his hands. He was opening and closing his fists. Looking at them with a blank expression. "My name is Marcus. That is what you named me." The doctor nodded then scribbled something down. "Where did you come from Marcus?" He asked. Marcus' brows furrowed. "Where did you come from?" The doctor looked puzzled. "Please, just answer the questions with a statement, not another question." Marcus tried to think. Where did he come from? Where did anything come from? "I was created here, so I come from here. The laboratory. But what you created me from came from the Earth, and what comes from the Earth comes from the universe. And what comes from the universe comes from beyond. So I suppose I came from the beyond." Marcus responded while looking up towards the ceiling. The doctor showed a hint of a smile. Marcus turned out even better than expected. "Are you self-aware?" Marcus looked at the doctor with another puzzled look. "Are you--" It was then that he remembered, no answering questions with questions. Am I self-aware? He thought to himself. He didn't respond for a good three minutes then the doctor repeated his question. "Marcus, are you self-aware?" Marcus let out a breath. "I don't know how to answer that. I know I am a being other than you." The doctor slowly nodded then scribbled that down on his page. It wasn't the best answer Marcus could have given to convince the scientists he was self-aware, but it was all he could think of.

It finally happened. The team of technicians and scientists were finally able to create something that would surpass anything they'd ever create in their lives. They'd made a self aware robot using both a computer hard drive and a human brain. Brushing the dust off his shoulders, the tall charcoal haired male stepped into the room with a huge window. He could see Marcus and a scientist were speaking, the man in the lab coat taking down notes. However, Marcus knew nothing about being watched. Viewing their interactions, the male heard as the door behind him opened and lightly closed "Mr. Kyoya, we have your schedule and papers ready..." a male voice broke the silence in the small room. Nodding, his eye focused still on the two men beyond the glass, he accepted the clipboard and flipped through the papers attached to it. He signed off where it was required and neatly folded the schedule to place in his pocket. Hibari had been told that he would be the one to take Marcus home. Everyone wanted to learn more about him and Mr. Takeshi had strickly asked for Hibari to take the robot home. It meant nothing big to the male as he handed back the papers, it just meant more work and more pay. Yes, of course, he was also curious about how Marcus would develop as both a human and a robot, and his team being the first to ever create such a robot like Marcus was something fascinating as well.

Clearing his throat, Hibari heard the door once more before he folded his arms over his chest Curious.... So curious.... I wonder which part of your brain holds more control over your actions and emotions.... he thought to himself. He'd been so deep into his thoughts, he didn't even hear his assistant Ari tell him it was time for him to go in and meet Marcus. Her voice broke through his thoughts "Mr. Kyoya!". "Oh.. Sorry Ari I didn't see you there..." he apologized to the female. Walking with her, he nodded as she filled him in on everything they'd learned about Marcus thus far, which was next to nothing. "He'll be going with you and the chief wants updates everyday by eight p.m." Ari explained. Hibari sighed and ran a hand through his hair, this robot was starting to become more troublesome by the minute. "Tell him I'll have them sent by e-mail" he said before pushing on the door. "Good morning James, Marcus" he said, nodding to both men before giving them a small smile.

Marcus turned to face the new figure in the room as soon as Hibari walked in. He very quickly scanned his face which encoded Hibari's face into Marcus' memory system. The doctor in the room nodded towards Hibari with a smile. He walked over to him and started tapping at his clipboard with his pen. "Ahh, you came just in time. I have one last question for Marcus, the Halting problem. Most computers, and A.I. systems can't answer it. We will see if Marcus can. The team is almost done running his diagnostics. Everything seems to be going along well. Although..." The doctor flipped a couple pages on his clipboard then pointed at something with his pen. "We can't really come to a conclusion about self-awareness. He seems to understand he is his own person, but we aren't sure if he is as aware of himself as a human would be. For example, he may not be aware of his place in time and space, how his actions, or just simple everyday gestures can manipulate the world around him. He might not understand topics that deal with strong emotions, death, or even life for that matter." The doctor let his papers fall back into place then smiled. "But, please, come with me while I ask Marcus the last question. Then I will introduce you two."

The doctor patted Hibari on the shoulder then returned to Marcus. "Alright Marcus. Sorry about that." Marcus simply nodded. "Now just one last question Marcus. We call this, 'the halting problem'. Here's the question: If you were to make a bet with someone that your watch would never stop ticking, when would you be able declare victory?” The doctor finished reading the question from the page then looked up at Marcus waiting for his answer. At first Marcus looked very confused. He blinked a few times as he repeated the doctor's question in his head a few times. "I..." He closed his eyes for a minute, but you could see the frustration on his face. It was like Marcus knew the answer, it was right there, but something in his mind blocked it off. He had the "tip of the tongue" feeling going on in his head. Maybe it was happening because his human brain knew the answer was -- You never could declare victory, something like that would be impossible to know., but his computer brain was running every logistical math equation, possibility, combination known to man. He was simply overwhelmed. "I don't know." He responded solemnly.

The doctor's lips turned into a slight frown as he scribbled down some words on the clipboard. "What is the answer?" The doctor finished writing then looked up at Marcus. "You could never declare victory. If it stopped ticking, you would've lost the bet. To win the bet, you'd have to live forever -- but you could never quite reach the end of forever could you?" Marcus closed his eyes again and tried to comprehend what the doctor was explaining to him, but it was difficult. "Don't think too hard Marcus. Computers can't understand double negatives, or compute complex ideas like that... but humans can." The doctor sighed, his hope for Marcus had just went down the drain. Although, Marcus did think of that answer, he just couldn't get his brain to bring the answer forward. Marcus looked down pondering the question, and the answer. "Now Marcus, I'd like you to meet someone. This is Dr. Kyoya." The doctor stepped off to the side and allowed Hibari to further introduce himself to Marcus.
