Finnian had never been so close to shore before, but he was curious. He had seen the depths of the ocean, the greatest creatures of the sea, but he had never even considered what may exist on the land. He had heard stories told of four-legged Soquili, and of flowers that actually bloomed, and of dry seaweed that grew tall and strong and didn't get hefted off by the current. So far, however, all he had encountered was shallow, cloudy waters that pushed him about with each wave. So far his experience was less than exciting, and a little bit disappointing. Whenever he popped his head out, all he could see was sand. He shook his head. Surely the other mers had been mistaken, because this was certainly not the exciting adventure he was promised!

Miss Ethel Anne had taken up her normal position on the edge of the ocean, scouring the waters for incoming ships. Her lantern was tucked away in a secret hollow for the day, as she would not need it until nightfall. Her current efforts for the day were absolutely fruitless, with not even another Soqulii sighting. She sighed and shook her head. Maybe it simply was not meant to be for her. When she saw the mer, however, she was certain that her eyes had deceived her. She had heard stories of them, but surely they weren't true. How foolish would that be? A Soquili with hooves and a fish tail! Pirates had sworn to their existence, but Ethel had never been convinced. Perhaps this was just a Soquili who needed help? Perhaps they were drowning! Oh my! The thought caused her to jump into action, hurriedly making her way into the water to save the poor soul. After all, what is a lady to do?!

The mer stallion hadn't even noticed the bright orange mare on his surfacing, but as she scrambled into the water his eyes widened. It was quite the sight; there was hair everywhere, and her high steps into the water looked more than a bit silly. Bewildered, he looked around to see what she may be reacting to in such a manner. Unable to see anything else around, he furrowed his brows. Was she coming after him? Was she going to try to catch him?! Oh my! Before he could swim away, however, she was there, pulling on his mane, trying to drag him out of the water. He flopped about wildly in an attempt to escape, but this land mare seemed to have the upper hand. Amazing, it was, to be thrown about by such a dainty little thing! He shrieked, hoping she would let go so he could escape.

Her adrenaline hadn't taken long to kick in, and Ethel was quickly to the would-be victim. She grabbed at anything she could with her mouth, determined to save the poor creature from drowning. The shriek, however, caught her off guard, and she released her grip to investigate. "I'm just trying to help you! I don't want you to drown!" At this time, she noticed the lack of appendages on his bottom half and gasped. It was true! They truly did exist! And here she was, thinking that everyone who spoke of these creatures was simply playing a little trick on her. Her eyes widened as she watched the stallion continue to thrash, in much shallower water than he was when they'd started.
