If there was one lesson learned from consulting the Death division lead that was universal, it was how to make a hasty retreat. It was something Quinn had learned, and was now honing as he hauled some major tush away from Caelius's office.

He felt frustrated, sure, but the lead had made some valid points. He had gone to the lead without really thinking deeply about what his experiences meant. Only problem with this was, he felt he didn't have all the pieces. There was still something missing.

The first thought that came to mind was discussing this with someone. Caelius had said, under penalty of forfeiting his existence, he was to not tell anyone else to get them involved. Thing was, he had never specifically said he couldn't talk with anyone who wasn't already involved. Thankfully, his 'sponsor' hunter was such a case. Further fortunate news, said hunter was also a friend. Lucky had a few usual haunts, so it was safe to check those first.

Eventually after much wandering he found Lucky settled in the library. After approaching Caelius on the subject, Quinn felt like he could talk to any normal person about such matters. Wasting no time, he approached the other hunter and waited until he was noticed. "Are you free to talk?"

Quinn's impatient presence on the other side of the desk eventually forced Lucky's gaze away from the five open books he'd spread around him. He eyed Quinn uncertainly at first - people didn't usually go looking for him, of all people.

"Uh - " Lucky briefly glanced down at the chaotic pile of unfinished work he was amassing across the desk. Even so, he was unable to stop himself from being compliant, quickly looking back up at the other death hunter and shrugging. "Sure, I guess."

Once upon a time ago Quinn would have stopped and mentioned he would come back later once Lucky was finished with his paperwork. He now knew better, Paperwork was never finished in Death Division. Lucky was taking a break from the work to talk with him, so he was going to snap up the opportunity.

Only problem being, he didnt know where to start. There was a awkward silence as he glanced around, making sure there were indeed no other hunters listening in. Thankfully most hunters avoided the library like the plague, it was a good quiet place to get work done. "Firstly, this cant leave this room okay?" Normally he would have trusted Lucky not to tell anyone, but this was some seriously confidential knowledge and he rather liked not having a scythe to the face. "Boss said no one but -" He tapped his arm where the hourglass marking they both shared was "- Can know."

Finally sure that no one was listening he flopped in a chair across the table and scooted closer. "The recent incident, the red haze." He prompted, knowing he wouldn't need to go into further details; Lucky wouldn't forget that day anytime soon either. " Something happened.... and i need help." He was giving Lucky a choice, if he didn't want to know Quinn would move on and find another of the three remaining Death-marked.

The library was indeed mostly empty. Most people had better things to do, or at least, less depressingly dark and windowless places to read. It was almost uncanny how easily Lucky could read the telltale signs of fear Quinn was radiating. He wasn't sure whether or not to find it comforting that he wasn't the only one, for once. After all, Quinn had to be nervous for a reason.

"Oh," Lucky's expression split into a grimace at the mere mention of orders from Caelius, and moreso at being reminded of the hourglass tattoo. "Great."

"Not that I'm not eager to involve myself in the business of cosmic horrors or anything, but uh, I'm going to need a little more to go on here, Quinn." Lucky freed a notebook from underneath a particularly large, illustrated book of diseases hunters were known to be susceptible to, and idly clicked his pen a few times in the other hand. Despite his tone, he did look like he was taking Quinn seriously. Death was pretty serious. "So, um. Define something, and define help."

Folding his arms on the table Quinn placed his forhead down and stared at the table. He knew that Lucky had given him his attention, that notebook and pen click was a sure sign of it even if the others tone suggested otherwise. Still he needed a second to collect his thoughts, so he stayed this qay for a brief few minutes. "I dont know where to start that doesnt sound stupid." He finally said, still staring down at the table. If anything Caelius's encounter had taught him a few things.

"I died a few times out in the field." He finally muttered, those words radiating the fear he felt as he couldnt stop the shiver up his spine. "Around four times." A normal day in Deus, only when they 'died' normally it was more a running out of energy as they passed out, their weapons protecting them. "Normally we just black out and wake up in the infirmary... but as you know the red Haze was different." It turned them in to monsters.

Prompting over, the dark skinned hunter brought his blue eyes to meet Lucky's. "Two times, something different happened with me." Moving his arm up he placed a palm over the Hourglass marking under his long sleeved shirt. "This Burned, and i heard words. They spoke to me about a debt owed and a debt not paid, before my heart stopped." He would give lucky a moment for those words to sink in. "That was just the first time. The second time was... a lot more vivid. The same sensations happened, the burning and the heart, only this time it..... well." He frowned thinking about it. "I was in a room with a Elevator, the smell of a italian restaurant, and Death at the table." Lucky would know Death. Quinn sat up now, leaning back against the chair. "He spoke of a promise unkept, a curse catching up to me... or us, How words and idly wishes had power, and of someone who sacrificed us and how we should find them and ask about shattered fragments." Quinn really knew how muddled this all sounded, after all Death had mentioned how he could only Allude to things not give a straight answer.

At the mention of Death, Lucky immediately stopped idly scribbling down the tale and peered sharply over the top of the notebook. Quinn finally had his full, undivided attention, and he looked scared. "Sacrificed?"

He set the notebook aside and began to fretfully and mindlessly disassemble his pen while Quinn finished talking.

"I - I don't understand how. There were, uh, five of us then, right? And neither of us have... used ours yet." Lucky's eyes darted toward the general area of Quinn's hidden arm tattoo all the same, just in case that wasn't true. He'd told nobody about his own mark, not even Mimsy. But he wasn't going to just get rid of it, either - a dire moment would come along when the price would, for a moment, be worth the pain to follow. "I can all but guarantee you that Gale's too proud and Shiloh's too content to take the risk. Not sure about the last one, though - I actually don't know a lot about him. So..."

Any more attempts to think through the matter ended in futility. Lucky stopped pushing around pieces of the pen and just cradled his head in his hands instead. "Ugh. It could be anyone. It could be Death himself for all we know. Quinn, can't you just go back and ask for some less cryptic direction here?"

Quinn nodded ad Lucky tossed back his own assessment of the situation, agreeing with his judgement of Gale and Shiloh. "Gale might take the risk if pushed hard enough but, i agree." After the incident with the grail he would be less gung-ho about taking a risk too. "Otto i dont know well either." The prior death hunter had left for sun division before Quinn had a chance to get to know him.

He sighed as he remembered another tidbit. "Boss also mentioned something else." he was certain Caelius let this tidbit drop on purpose. "Apparently even if we die the wish stays where it is, and can still be used. By someone else im pretty certain." Or that is what Caelius eluded to, which wasn't good news for them. It meant that they were just as 'useful' dead or alive.

Lost in thought he only caught the tail end of Lucky's last words, feeeing his jaw unhinge at the idea of it. "Lucky you do realize the only time i was able to see him was when i was dying?" The last of the words came out a bit panic'd, faster than the others and more emphasized.

"Yeah, yeah." Lucky's gaze was fixed on a spot on the far wall, as he was still processing the entirety of information Quinn had already thrown him. He spoke slowly - it was pretty obvious he hadn't actually listened to what Quinn had just said. "Just... do it again. You know... temporarily."

He stared blankly.

........

And blinked.

..........

"Death, lucky. Dying, pushing daisies, 10 feet under, the big ending journey in a boat heading towards the next adventure in the light. Unless you secretly know the secret to life and death, that is."

"What? Oh. Yeah." He picked up one of the books and began to turn the pages, skipping to an entirely different section. He'd been poring through medical books for a while now, and he'd come across more than enough knowledge about his and everyone else's physical limitations, and the hundreds of recorded abnormal causes of death that the infirmary had come across in the last few years alone. "But you didn't die. I mean, you're still here, right? I don't know anything about bringing people back from the dead, but I know you can stop or start a heart with an electric current. Just 'go back' and ask for a - a real answer. Whatever happened to you back there looked a lot like a heart attack from my point of view. Same difference, physiologically. You're dead, and then you're not dead."

Lucky set the book back down on the table, dragging one finger down a table of labeled variables. Hunter tolerances for electrical currents. It was easier to speculate about how to go about it when he thought of it as entirely Quinn's problem, emotionally distancing himself from the dangers. He glanced down at the diagram as well, pensive.

"Hypothetically."

Really he should be surprised they were talking so lightly about death. Or really, no it wasn't THAT much of a surprise. Just another day on Deus, where it was often not surprising to hear a friend or acquaintance was eaten by the monsters that really do live under your bed.

"I....guess." He said finally, growing and looking towards the ceiling as he pondered Lucky's words. It did seem possible to go back that way, not that he was particularly looking forward to attempting anything so dangerous. He crossed his arms over his chest, flopping down into a nearby chair. "Even for a hypothesis, it has roots in truth. Only.....i really don't want to do it again." The idea of going alone and possibly not making it back scared him silly.

He paused as a thought came to mind. Dare he...?

He would have to word this carefully.

"Clearly as a running theory one test subject would not be enough." He spent enough time in life labs, even if it was only as a trainee, to know how experiments work. " Multiple subject would make a much better test, possibly even a controlled test subject would be needed." If Lucky was for this, they might need to find a third to go too. Both he and lucky had deaths mark, would anyone without one be able to make the trip too?

"So.... want to try with me?" Quinn refused to go this alone....

Lucky didn't answer at first. The seconds dragged on as he constructed all the ways it could go wrong, all the ways he could fail to prepare. Of course he knew what Quinn was getting at. Nobody wanted to die. Even temporarily, there would always be a chance that their hubris in even attempting this could cost them everything. Moreso for himself than for Quinn - at least Quinn had actually had some sort of a vision, meaning he wasn't supposed to die yet.

But would it be so bad? To not be responsible any more - for past mistakes, and future problems on the horizon. If something went wrong...

"Fine."

There wasn't much else to say on the matter. He shut the book very suddenly, and began to gather his belongings (and library books) into a bag. He wasn't looking at Quinn.

"We need someone to supervise... this. I've - I've got to make a call." Lucky continued to be remote and lost in his own thoughts. He pulled out his phone but only stared at it. "Meet me in two hours. Let's just get this over with."
