Summertime was the best. School was out and again Karone was practically living in the library. There was something fantastic about being surrounded by books, the smell, the feel the limitless possibilities that lived within the pages…
So she might not be at school teaching the wonders of literature to her students, but she was clearly thinking at least somewhat of new lesson plans to use during the next year. Today had been no different than many which had passed so far this summer, but she had decided to go out for some drinks.
That was how she ended up in the bar…the very packed bar. It seemed like everyone was coming out for drinks tonight…but maybe that was to be expected. Mondays were down days…the days that started another week of work…the days that most people liked to wash away with copious amounts of beer and vodka.
But hey. Maybe she’d meet a friend.
There were no empty tables left in the bar, and Karone scanned for the least crowded one, finally spotting on in the back. She walked over and hesitated for just a moment before flashing a smile. “Hey. Is this seat taken? I looked for an empty one, but there was nothing out there, and you looked pretty alone over here…so want a drinking buddy?”

General Painite rarely spent time as Gently Ponsonby these days, as she had no real use for her civilian life beyond making just enough money to keep a roof over her head. And even that was not all that important, considering she could do whatever she wanted as a Negaverse soldier. Including forcing her way into other people's homes, or just spending time in Negaspace or the rift.
She did forget, for a little while there, that there were actually fun things to do as a civilian. Like drinking.
Drinking was fun.
Not threatened by the crowds and not paying any mind to any of the pathetic civilians around her, Gently leaned against the bar and nursed her beer at her table, having already had a couple and smiling freely at anyone who approached her. Of course, they had no idea that she just considered them sources of energy, starseeds, or bloody release for later, and was basically eying them for their potential to amuse her. It was like picking a specific cow from the slaughterhouse.
She was sitting alone at the moment, and looked a bit surprised as someone wandered up. Looking up, a little red faced but seeming very relaxed and jovially, Gently nodded and waved her hand at the seat opposite her.
"By all means, love," she said, her accent just a bit thicker because of the drinking. "You're not going to ask me if I come here often, are you?"

Karone blinked and finally laughed. “Well, I mean I suppose I could if that’s what you were in to. Anything to get me a table, you know?”
She took a long sip of her drink and sighed, looking away for a minute before glancing back at Gently. “So, do you come here often?” The question was accompanied by the perfect slow wink, and then a laugh that sent some of her drink spilling down the front of her shirt.
“Well s**t. Here I go trying to be social, and there I go getting booze all over me. Oh well. What brings you out here drinking alone tonight? Did your friends all cancel on you or something?”
She grabbed a napkin, scrubbing some of the liquid off of her top, then hesitated, grabbing some of the peanuts that were on the table and popping them into her mouth. “I mean, not that I’m judging, but…two hotties like us should have some friends to hang out with, you know?”
God…she was talking with so many questions tonight. She had a larger vocabulary than this…but eh. Oh well.

Gently laughed at her new companion, smiling and finding the other girl immediately endearing, with her willing to play around. Even her bumbling made Gently laugh, shaking her head and offering a napkin, though Karone seemed to have it well in hand.
Gently skipped making the joke she was considering, instead focusing on the question that was presented.
"Friends? What friends would that be? I do all my drinking alone, dovey. What good would a full table do me, anyway? Those boys have been eying me since I've sit down, and particularly when I get up, but haven't had the balls to make a move. In fact, you're the only one to get close. Not afraid of strangers, hmm?"
She smiled wryly, tilting her head and tipping the bottle against her lips, parting them just a bit to tap the glass with her teeth. All the while, she kept her eyes on Karone, a daring and unmistakably dangerous look, though just what that danger might be was likely a mystery.
Painite was always on the hunt, and her eyes, even when powered down, could not lose that wild edge these days. At least tonight she could pretend it was the booze getting the better of her. And maybe that was helping.
"Where are all your friends tonight?"

“I’m not afraid of strangers, I mean I spend most of the year locked in a classroom with the biggest monsters this side of…well. Mosnterville. I’m a highschool teacher over at Crystal Academy…and let me tell you. Those girls can be trouble with a capital T.”
She took another drink and shrugged. “Most of my friends are all locked up tight over at the library. I’m more bookish and a loner than I am someone who likes big groups. But I don’t mind meeting people in bars. Not that I do it often, normally I’m the one huddled in the corner…but more likely than not I just grab a six pack at the store and huddle at home over a bowl of noodles.”
She wasn’t ashamed to admit it, but she was a loner most of the time and that was just that.
Karone glanced over at the boys that Gently had mentioned and laughed. “You’re not going to invite them over to buy you a drink? God I would love someone to just buy me drinks and flirt with me and then I could just. You know. Laugh and walk out of the bar without them getting a damn thing from me…because that’s just how I am.”
The woman sighed and finished her glass, looking kind of sadly at the empty container. “Like now. Maybe I could sweet talk them into getting me a refill.”

Gently laughed, nodding her head.
"A teacher, hmm? I bet you know all about trouble, then. I hear teenagers are the worst." Most of her enemies were teenagers, but her answer to that problem was probably a lot different than the educational approach. Of course, she tended to take a move violent approach to most things in life.
Her sea green eyes were shimmering thoughtfully as she watched Karone, though there was a darkness in them that masked whatever those thoughts might be. She grinned after a moment a put her nearly empty beer bottle down.
"Well, let's see you get something from them, then. And a drink for me, too, if you don't mind, dovey. For my part, I've had enough of their leering for one night, so we can skip out as soon as you get a good haul out of them." She laughed at that, and it was a surprise to her that she still knew how. It even lacked most of its usually wicked intention, and the sharp edge of cruelty her laughter often carried was dulled. Instead, she was just having fun.
She wanted to see the way this girl worked a bit more, but she was definitely getting the feeling that this was a keeper. And Gently always took the things she wanted.

Ohh…a challenge. Karone’s eyes flashed and a slow grin spread across her face. She waggled her eyebrows once at Gently, then sauntered over to the table where the boys were still leering from.
The poor things had to still be young…maybe still going to the college or something. How cute.
After a few minutes with them, laughing and putting on a dash of her charm, she returned to the table with a fresh drink, and another bottle for Gently, as well as some cash, as the boys had covered the other drinks that the two women had bought as well.
“Ready to skip out of here, girl? They’re expecting to take us back to the frat house in an hour. And I for one, am not really that interested to see what college boys have in mind for me. Though, I will say the money is quite nice. But I did tell them that you and I were going to go and freshen up…so let’s finish these and skip on out, shall we?”
Karone downed her glass, handing most of the money to the other women. Oh drunk guys could be so generous.

"Frat house? Now that sounds absolutely horrid," Gently laughed, gleefully delighted as she took her drink and made short work of it. She was not as gung ho as college boys, at the very least, and needed a little bit of time to finish it off, but hey. She had not been in college for a while, and the finer points of partying hard enough to pass out had been a little lost on her.
She had learned a lot of other things in return, of course. Things she found much more useful.
Head pleasantly spinning, Gently got up and motioned for Karone to follow her. How often had she dropped down on someone in this back alley? So many people snuck out this back door, which she was now leading her new friend out of, and they had always been such easy targets. It was odd to be on the other side of things. Rather than the hunter, she was the easy target, wobbling a bit as she walked, pretending she was definitely not as drunk as she seemed.
But even enjoying her night as a civilian, Gently never let her guard down. Never missed a beat. She clung to Karone's arm and wobbled sideways, leaning on her heavily enough to knock them both sideways. They stumbled against the nearest wall, Gently laughing as she struggled to free herself from Karone's arm without falling over in the process.
She looked up and smiled warmly, affectionately, before she powered up. In a sudden, cutting moment, everything changed. Gently vanished, and instead there was General Painite, her smile not relenting or even visibly shifting, yet somehow a thousand times more sinister. She did not say anything, pushing her hand into Karone's chest and taking hold of the precious starseed hidden inside. For a moment, she just held it, taking the time to draw a slow, steadying breath. Leaning closer, she whispered.
"I like you."
She then focused on the chaos inside her, pushing what she could into the starseed she so tenderly held, corrupting it as she had done so many before it. But this was different. Painite rarely corrupted anyone now, but she saw something she wanted. She was not going to fail this time: this time, she was going to keep that which made her feel happy, and nothing was going to take it away from her.

Karone had no problem following her new bestie. In fact, she was having quite a good time ‘running’ from the dumb frat boys, and even when she was pretty much tripped over and landed against the wall, she laughed. “I really think you might have had a little too much…”
The laughter died for a moment when in front of her eyes, Gently changed into something else. Someone else. “…to drink…”
The sentence was finished rather lamely, her expression of excitement of joy, turning to one of concern and confusion. “What are you…” A hand reached towards her chest and she felt her face heat up just slightly. “Gent—“ She wasn’t sure what happened, but instead of the hand landing on her chest…it slid into her chest, fingers closing around something inside of her.
She heard the words that the woman said and her heart skipped a beat, the heat rising in her cheeks once more, chasing out just some of the fear.
At least…chased the fear away until the pain came into the picture. When that happen, Karone cried out, but just for a moment, she didn’t want anyone coming out to see this or anything…she…
She felt different. The pain was ebbing…
She had changed into something new…something…stronger…
“Oh…” Her head tilted down to check out her new clothes and she looked up at Painite, a confused expression on her face. “I…”
There wasn’t much she could say right then. She had a hundred…maybe two hundred questions…but…it seemed so logical just to say. “I like you too.”

Painite stepped back and let the transformation happen, looking tired and feeling particularly dizzy this time, but she assumed it was more to do with the drinks she had than her actual strength. Yes, corrupting someone took a lot out of her, but she was stronger than that. She wobbled, standing a little awkwardly just to ensure she did not topple one way or the other.
The dizziness slowed and she cleared her vision for the most part, smiling at the new Lieutenant standing in front of her. Carefully, she brushed the tuft of colorful bangs from the other's face, smiling as she admired her work.
And yes, she took full credit for it.
"Look at you. my new little minion. Aren't you sweet? What's your name?" She knew the other would know it, though in the back of her mind, Painite was sure she could hear it, too. Not that it mattered. Painite would call her whatever she wanted.
Because this Lieutenant, unlike so many that got away from her, was hers alone.
"I'll explain everything to you soon. Don't you fret, Dovey. I'm going to take really good care of you. So welcome to the Negaverse. I... I am your General, Painite." The way she said it, there was hardly a pause between the last two words, implying something other than just an introduction. She smiled, still pale and shaky looking, but far too happy to care.

The new lieutenant looked up at her general and nodded. “I’m uh…” She thought for a moment. Karone obviously wasn’t what this…what was being asked for, so instead she stood there awkwardly for a moment until a name came to her…it couldn’t have taken more than a few seconds, but those seconds felt like hours to her. “Cavansite. My name is Cavansite, General.”
She couldn’t deny that part of her was excited. She didn’t know what the ******** was going on…but she felt strong. And she had a beautiful woman calling her all sorts of attractive British pet names and…
And there was no reason on earth for Cavansite not to like that.
“You’re looking rather pale, you know…maybe you should get off your feet…” There was concern evident in her voice. This woman…this drinking buddy turned commanding officer…she couldn’t be pushing herself that much right now, she had been drinking quite a bit earlier.
“My home isn’t too far away…You could stay the night if you wanted, and explain things to me there?”

"Cavansite, hmm? That's cute," she smiled and nodded her head proudly, laughing for a moment. The night was looking better and better, and she could not remember the last time she had so much fun.
This was what being in the Negaverse was supposed to be like. It was all about power, about chaos, and about doing whatever she wanted.
"See, from the moment you walked up to my table, I knew you were trying to get me to go home with you," she purred, putting her arm around Cavansite's shoulders and leaning on her a bit as another wave of rather enjoyable dizziness moved over her.
She smiled blearily and nodded her head, powering down since they were still alone.
"Take me home, then, dovey."
