Cain was sitting alone on top of a jagged hilltop which overlooked the flames of hell. From where he sat he could hear the screams of men and women below, and watch them dance around in the infinite fire. He began swirling his finger around in the dust by his feet then flicked a rock down into the flames far below. He was one of the lucky few who made it out of the pit. After a decade or so, most demons did find their way out by overcoming the pain of the fire, and scaling the mountains. Cain was damned to hell many many years ago. It was so long ago that he could barely remember. He couldn't even remember his life on Earth, his family, not even his name. Cain was just a name he had made up for himself a long time ago when another demon had asked what he wanted to be called. One thing Cain could remember though was his sins. That was something a demon wasn't able to forget. In fact, it was all they could ever think about, it was punishment.

During Cain's time on Earth he was a murderer. He had killed 20 people when he went on a shooting spree in a church. He was eventually caught and sentenced to death. After waiting 30 years in prison, he was finally executed via electric chair in the late 20's. To this day, he remembers the faces of those he killed. Men, women, and children. They haunted him, and if he could go back to that day, he wouldn't have ever laid his finger on that trigger. Not now that he knew hell was real. That infinite pain, and suffering did lie on the other side for those who sin.

xxxOpal was in hell. It was that simple. But what she didn't understand was why. Angels weren't allowed in hell and demons weren't allowed in heaven, it was that simple. But her superior had insisted she needed to come here. He was a Dominion, and she was merely an Angel. She'd taken care of few people in her time in heaven so far. She'd only been there since the late 60s. As such, she still remembered her past and name, unlike most. Pushing a lock of pale green hair from her face, she descended from the sky very carefully. Her face was mortified. People screamed from below, making her body shiver. She couldn't handle seeing this suffering. So much suffering in one place made her want to vomit, even though she couldn't. Being an Angel wasn't what she thought it'd be. But she was more or less stuck with it. Her somewhat small, white and gold wings let her descend to one of the hilltops on the outskirts of the flames. Opal put a hand to her mouth, desiring tears to enter her eyes or bile climb up her throat. However, she felt nothing. Giving a soft sigh, the long-haired Angel looked around. She'd travelled far to get to the seventh ring. Her superior told her there was a soul in need of saving within the pits, but she found nothing that stood out. Anxiety flooded over her. She knew these people and their guards had seen her descend. It was only a matter of time before someone came looking for her.

Cain was just about to toss another rock into the flames when something caught the corner of his eye. It was a quick flash of green. He'd never seen a color like that in his whole time living in hell, at least not that he could remember. His field of color only ranged from black to red now of days, but nothing as bright as green. He turned around trying to follow what he thought he had saw. He began to think he was just imagining things until his red eyes landed on some figure in the distance to his left. "What?" Cain closed his eyes tight, and when they re-opened the figure was still standing there. He couldn't distinguish much about the thing because it was pretty far, but he could tell that it was bright! Unlike anything in hell. It didn't fit in and that was a fact. "Is that a...woman?" He whispered to himself. He was in such shock that he couldn't even keep himself from saying his thoughts out loud.

Cain slowly rose to his feet, his bones cracking everywhere beneath his skin. He hadn't moved in a couple of days now simply because there was nowhere to go, but now there was. Once he rose he stretched, another wave of bone cracks followed then he extended and clenched his fingers. He didn't want to get too close to that thing simply because he didn't know what it was, it could have been dangerous. "What are you...?" He muttered before materializing a sharp, black, trident in his hand. This was a skill he had learned and acquired from a demon a long time ago. The trident was something that kept him safe against attacks if he were to be pinpointed by another demon. The trident was about as tall as Cain, who was 6'4 tall. It was glossy black with matte red tips. The bottom of the trident was very ornate but the top was sharp enough to pierce a hole through anything.

Cain raised the trident and aimed it a little bit off from the green thing he saw in the distance. Once he had everything properly placed he threw the trident with all his strength and it flew in her direction. He crouched to his knee's and waited for the figure's reaction after materializing another trident in his hand. The first one had darted right past Opal's head and landed itself in the rocks behind her.

xxxOpal flinched slightly when her feet settled on the hard, hot rock. She seemed to prance in place momentarily before getting used to the feeling. Looking around, the delicate creature watched a tall creature rise to its full height about a mountaintop away. She tilted her head, furrowing her brows slightly. What was that? It must've ben a resident, or a guard. She really didn't want to find out, however. As she turned her back, a small bubble formed in her hands. It was glowing a bright, blue light. The Angel's hope returned. She was near it! Near her mission! As she began to turn, something dark and deadly sped past her head. She screamed, the bubble dropping from her hands and splintering into pieces of glass on the ground before dissipating. Her eyes were wide as she turned. It was the thing from earlier! Opal raised her hands in surrender, quickly dropping to a knee as she saw another weapon materialize. "N-No!" she cried, bowing her head. Her long, pale hair brushed the filthy ground, making her cringe. The Angel wasn't there for a fight- in fact, she couldn't fight to save her life. They weren't built for that. She quivered slightly in her delicate dress, her toes curling in fear.

Cain squinted his eyes to figure out what was in this creature's hands. As soon as he threw his trident something started glowing in them. But as soon as his trident lodged itself in the wall behind her they burst upon the floor. He could tell she was scared by the way she turned to face him. Eyes all wide, like she just experienced something traumatic. He saw her mouth something, then her head went down a bit, as if she was already surrendering. Cain gave her a puzzled look. Do I approach? Is this a trick? He thought. He stood back up straight, each inch of his spine cracking as he did so. He sighed then slowly began to approach Opal with his trident still in hand. He stopped about 3 feet in front of her then frowned.

Even though he was pretty close, he was still ready to kill the thing if she moved even the slightest bit. He slowly raised his trident from the ground to right under the creature's chin. Then he gently lifted her head to look up at him, then moved her head from left to right examining each inch of her pretty face. "What are you?" He asked. His voice was very hoarse, as if he hadn't spoken in years. His eyes were glowing a bit brighter than usual due to his uncertainty. It was then that he noticed her quivering. This woman was scared, and probably had all the reason to be. There was no way this beautiful, shining thing was a demon.

xxxOpal heard the creature begin to approach her. She quivered as his steps neared her, then stopped. Her head remained lowered until something hard tilted her chin up. She was forced to look at this creature, but... it wasn't quite as bad as she'd imagined. Definitely a demon. As he spoke, she listened very attentively. The Angel knew she needed to be careful- he was definitely dangerous. "I'm an Angel," she replied quietly, her large, bright eyes wide and scared. "My name was Opal," she told him. The points of his trident dug into her chin and throat, making her wince slightly. Opal tore her eyes from his face, looking around. Other demons and once-humans were noticing her arrival as well, not just this one. "Please, we can't stay out here. Is there anywhere we can go?' she begged softly, her hands quivering at her sides. She feared for her afterlife.

Wait... So is my character not a demon? Because I thought he was. I think it would be better if he actually was a demon and was working to get her out of hell, rather than her working to get him out.

When she mentioned the word angel Cain's stomach dropped. She was an enemy. He pressed the trident even further into her skin, but was still careful not to pierce her skin. He frowned and just looked at her for a long moment. He had never been more confused in his lifetime than he was in this one moment. He looked around and noticed there were demons looking in their direction. One was already walking in their direction. Cain hissed at the approaching figure, revealing his black split tongue. The demon stopped and growled back at Cain. He didn't know what to do. Should he run and leave Opal behind? Or actually take the little thing with him. What if she slowed him down. Cain's eyes narrowed as he made a decision. He turned the trident towards the other demon, and before giving him any time to react he threw it straight towards his head. Without a moment's notice he took Opal by the arm, and started to run with her dragging her behind him like some kind of rag doll. He decided to just take her with him and figure out why she was here.

Cain knew exactly where he would take her. It wasn't like he had a "home" here in hell. But there were places in this vast landscape that were more private than others. The cliffside that he was at before was a popular spot for demons to gather around. They loved looking down into the flames to watch humans rot. There was a lake though, not too far away from the cliffside where they would be able to talk safely. Not many demons hung around there since the water itself was poisonous. This Opal girl would just have to be careful not to fall in. Once Cain had put some good distance between them and the cliffside, he let go of Opal's arm, but continued walking towards the lake. He didn't like holding her arm. It felt so strange. So full of life, it was like he could feel that presence move into him and it made him uncomfortable. "Come this way." He said, nodding towards the lake. "Don't fall behind or you will be eaten."

xxxOpal let out a terrified, tiny squeak when his trident dug deeper into her pale skin. Her breathing hitched, goose bumps rising on all of her revealed skin. She didn't know what to expect, really. She'd been sent to hell to retrieve someone. Or, something, maybe. All she knew was that she'd been sent by her superior. The Angel's mind began to race as she thought- but everything seemed to stop when this demon removed his weapon from her throat and threw it past her. She glanced over her shoulder, to see what he'd thrown it at, but her arm was grabbed and she was forced to stand and run. The small girl was barely able to keep up with his long, fast strides on the hot ground. The rocks dug into and burnt her delicate feet. Finally, they stopped running. She leaned over, panting softly, not used to the running. Typically, she didn't even walk. Opal had all but used up her wings since she'd received them. Straightening up, she walked quickly to follow him. Her wings were pinned against her back as she looked around. "Why... didn't you kill me?" she posed the question hesitantly. "Not that I'm not eternally grateful... But why?"

No worries. I think a plot where Opal accidentally winds up in hell (like she falls, or is accidently sent there rather than earth), and Cain tries to help her get back to heaven would work out better.

Cain slowed down his pace when he heard the weak thing panting. Maybe she didn't have to walk much in heaven or something, but here she would learn how to run. And she would learn fast. There were always enemies around in hell. When she began asking why he spared her life he simply rolled his eyes, but his back was to her so she couldn't see. He honestly didn't know why he saved her. It was just his gut feeling at the moment. And he still wasn't even one hundred percent sure he was going to keep her alive. Cain just responded with shrug, hoping that would answer her question. Cain looked over his shoulder, pleased to see her following along at a steady pace. "Don't be grateful. I could still kill you." He said. His eyes began to glow a dull red again as if he was thinking of something sadistic.

All demons were aware that if they killed another demon they would absorb their power. Cain himself had killed a few. He was stronger than most demons around, but he definitely wasn't the strongest. He started to wonder what would happen if he were to kill an angel. Could he absorb her power? Maybe her energy, or her light. While he thought about it he noticed the poisonous lake approaching over the horizon. He pointed towards it to show Opal that they were very close.

xxxOpal watched his shoulders shrug and felt her gut wrench. She met his glowing red eyes briefly with her own bright ones, quickly bowing her head to show submission. The Angel was well aware he could still kill her. She followed him in silence until she watched his arm move. It pointed to a lake... that definitely wasn't clean to drink, or bathe in. She cringed slightly, biting her lip. Everything in hell was simply horrifying to the delicate angel. Being used to spending her time in heaven, where the skies were golden and the water was crystalline, she wasn't used to such darkness. The entire place breathed evil, and it made her sick. If she could vomit, she would have long ago. Continuing to walk, Opal felt her wings begin to feel tight. She despised the feeling and stretched them out. The feathered limbs were white and gold, as long as the short angel was tall. She smoothed a ruffled feather briefly, watching one fall onto the ground. Hastily, she picked it up and held it in her delicate fingers, pinning her wings against her back once more.

Cain approached the lake. He noticed a large rock on the edge of the water, and as he was about to take a seat when Opal began stretching her wings. Cain was so shocked that he turned around with a trident appearing in his hand quicker than the eye could see. She had it pointing towards just a few inches away from her face, right between her eyes. His heart was racing, but then he realized how pointless it was when she looked as innocent as ever. He didn't know what to expect though. "Don't... move." He said as his eyebrows pulled down into a frown. He knew in his right mind that Opal couldn't hurt him, but he'd never met a demon before, so all her big movements put him on edge.

Cain looked around, not moving the trident away from her face. He spotted the rock again then pointed his trident towards it. "Sit right there. Then I want you to tell me why you're here." He said. His voice was so harsh, and demanding. He had so many questions for her, but he decided to take them one at a time. If she tried anything though, he would push her into the lake and let the poison eat away at her skin.

She gave a very small nod when he told her not to move, her body beginning to quiver. As he looked around, settling on a rock, she scurried to it and sat. Her legs were pulled under her body, hands tucked in her lap. She looked much like a child, in that position. "One of my higher-ups told me there was something he needed from here... I don't know if it was a person or a thing, but my orb glowed blue earlier so I think I was close to it. But he just sent me down here..." she told him quietly, staring down at the white and gold feather in her fingers. Already, it had begun to turn grey and ugly. That's what happened when Angel's feathers fell out. They deteriorated rapidly, then finally disappeared. "Dominic, my superior, told me that someone would be here, expecting me... I guess he must've... been wrong," she said meekly, biting her lip. Opal didn't want to face the fact that he may have sent her down there for another reason. Dominic was an Angel, an honest and pure creature... So why would he do this to her? She whimpered quietly, feeling the feather dissipate from her fingers.

Why don't we say there's a human here in the lake of fire, that was sent here by accident, like he was supposed to be in heaven. And that's the person she needs to find and take back to heaven. Cain is helping her get him since he is used to fire and they end up trying to rescue him together, but then Cain and Opal grow closer and they have a hard time leaving eachother.

Cain cautiously listened to her every word. He could tell she was nervous so he lowered his trident midway through her explanation. But all and all, what she had to say was confusing. Why would some angel send another of his kind here. He thought that maybe since she was sent right to the lake of fire rather than to Lucifer himself, or any other part of hell, maybe she was searching for a new demon. A human that just arrived in the lake of fire. Maybe someone was wrongly accused. Hey, even angels got their paperwork messed up sometimes.

"So, these orb, things... They started glowing when you were at the lake of fire. Whatever you're looking for is probably in there." Cain didn't know why he was even helping this thing, but she looked so helpless, he couldn't resist at least trying to help her get whatever she needed then get out. Also the faster he was gone, the faster he would become less of a target. Opal stood out so much here, and Cain was there by her making him easy prey. Many people wanted to kill Cain too. Everyone wanted to absorb that trident ability of his. "You need to swim in that fire." He explained, his eyes lit up. He remembered the days way back, centuries ago, when he was stuck in the pit. Honestly "hell" wasn't even a word that could describe such a misery. The fire was blood curling, it would burn your skin off your bones. But of course Lucifer wouldn't let the humans escape the misery by dying. No, once your skin burned off and you could feel your innards boiling, your skin would re-appear, then the process would happen all over again. And all you could hear down there were screams of men and women who wished they had done right in their previous lives. No doubt that if someone was wrongfully sent to hell, they would need to be saved immediately.

xxxOpal looked up at him as he spoke. She gave a small nod to agree with him, rubbing her palms on her dress. Her eyes widened, breath catching in her throat. "Fire... Fire is toxic to Angels," she whimpered softly, her hands quivering in her lap. "Even on Earth, we have to steer clear of fire. We can only touch heavenly fire..." The Angel put her hands to her face, her back bending so her elbows could rest on her legs. As her breathing quivered, her wings seemed to twitch on her back. With each intake of breath, they fluttered the tiniest amount. After another moment, she sat up and clenched her jaw, a determined look upon her soft features. "We need to go. Now," she told him simply, then shrunk back down to size. "I-I... I need to go... To find it..." She looked at the rock she was sitting on, her mind reeling. All she could do, really, was fly above the flames until she found what she was looking for. After that, Opal wasn't sure what she would do to rescue this thing... or person.
