A cat up a tree,
She’s looking at me,
A smile a purr, that is all I ask,
From my Cheshire sweet.

Harrison continued to hum the little tune he had constructed himself early that morning as he strolled through his garden. He paused every so often to check on his flowers, the ones he had planted himself, the ones that reminded him of home. They were in full bloom and each vibrant color made him smile. He stopped by his favorites, a bush of red roses, to check that the soil was still good for them and that there were no weeds around. The roses were, by far, the most durable plant that Harrison cared for but that knowledge had never stopped him from fussing over them.

He regarded the rose bush fondly as he drew away from the plant. The pleased look slowly faded from his features as he came to the end of his little ditty and remembered why he had been humming it in the first place. It had only happened that morning but that had been days ago, or had it only been minutes? Harrison couldn’t remember. Telling time was a concept that was lost on him. The sun rose and fell whether he knew what to call its passage or not and that was all that mattered to him. What he did know was that he’d met that cat just after sun up and the bright ball in the sky had yet to sink back below the horizon since his meeting.

My darling Cheshire sweet.” Harrison practically purred the line of song. He’d seen her up a tree, watching him hungrily from the branches with beautiful eyes as clear and frigid as ice. She was an unusual Cheshire for she did not smile or return his greeting. Her coat was a sandy brown with faint striping and not brightly colored like the other Cheshire’s he’d known but he knew what she was all the same. It had been so long since he’d seen anyone from his homeland that he’d been over the moon. It had been all too easy to ignore the way that she had hissed and scratched at him. She’d missed her mark anyway so he guessed that she was playing.

He smiled distantly. “A Cheshire cat, so close to my garden, is fortunate indeed.” He said but there was no cheer in his words. The meeting had been wrong. She had been so bitter. She hadn’t spoken a single word to him but he knew what she was. Her ribs had been jutting out slightly, her skin far too tight against her magnificent form. She was starving but after she had swiped at him she had run off deep into the woods. Harrison looked around his garden. There was plenty of food for rabbits but not a morsel for a cat.

Harrison flicked his tail sending a ripple through the fabric of his coat-blanket. If he could get her fed up perhaps she would return to her normal senses and sing with him in his garden. Harrison straightened up and grinned at the thought. It would be wonderful to have company in his garden again. It had been hours since he’d last entertained visitors, a pair of young foals with many bright wings. All he had to do was find some food for her and Harrison knew just how to do that. There were always horses at a nearby stream. One of them would have the answer to his problems; he just had to get to them.

It was a hot, bright mid-morning that left no doubt in the mind that the season was still summer. Black Rose had woken up early that morning but not of her own volition. A rather chatty group of songbirds had taken up perches in the tree that she had slept beside and had taken the rising of the sun as a signal that it was time to start trading gossip. Rose had made a brief attempt at reasoning with them but that had only lead to her becoming the morning’s topic of discussion. She had left before she had to endure one more feather brained snack commenting on how she had managed to glue burnt grass blades to her eyes with tree sap. She had not; her lashes had grown out to be that long by themselves. They were every bit as natural as her talons, tail, and fluffy ears. It had been insulting that the birds thought otherwise, and also ridiculous. Who in their right mind would come up with such a ridiculous plan in the first place?

Relocating herself hadn’t made her any more tired, honestly it had only served to wake the young mare further. In the end she had given up on her pursuit of sleep and set about finding something else to do. She had been trying to locate her father and brothers but hadn’t found any trace of them where she normally found them and she quickly determined that she wouldn’t be finding them. That had been yesterday and she hadn’t promised her mother to return for at least three weeks. Black Rose would have plenty of time to do whatever she wanted and given the temperature that meant that today called for swimming.

It didn’t take long for Rose to reach the stream and it took even less time for her to charge straight into the water until it came up to her back cooling her instantly. The water moved quickly but not so fast that she had trouble standing against the current. She dipped her head in to take a drink, but she pulled back in alarm when something met her lips that definitely wasn’t water. Blinking down at the water in confusion she saw something silvery flash by.

Fish. There were fish in this stream. Rose couldn’t help but laugh out loud with her excitement. She had seen fish plenty of times before but she’d never had the pleasure of swimming with them until now. Her tail swayed back and forth as she slowly started moving around the water chasing the fish here and there just for fun. There were so many of them that she really wasn’t sure which way to go first. Her golden eyes narrowed as a wide grin spread across her face. This was the best decision she had made so far this trip.
