The fireflies blinked on and off in the falling night. Their glowing bodies doing an intricate dance that heralded the night. His mother Aella had told him that there were some nights filled with magic--those were the nights the fireflies danced. The fireflies had danced when his mothers had professed their love to each other. They had danced when Aella had found his basket, a gift from the fireflies. And they had been there the night Witness had popped her head out of her basket.

To Epitaph, fireflies were magic--heralds of something good happening. The creeping shadows of the swamp seemed kinder as the frogs croaked their song. The crickets joined in and the wind made a haunting sound all it's own. It was nights like this that he felt as though he could almost hear his mother Chanterelle's heartbeat again--the soft, sonorous sound of her voice. On nights like this, he felt as if she was there just beyond his reach. A special gift to him.

He blinked watery eyes at the fireflies filled his jar as they always did on night's like this. It was as though, they felt kindred with him. The rustlings of the swamp changed and he could hear the sounds of someone approaching in the growing dark.

She picked her way through the swamp, still irritated with the medicine soq or... whatever the blood he had been. Now she was further into this morassy mess and more lost than ever. No way she was going back to him, even if she could find her way back.

Well, how far can you go into the swamp? Halfway, then she's going back out. She was counting on that as she trudged through the muck. She was hungry, she was tired. She just wanted out. And fed. And free of the clinging nightmares that were like vines she had to break through.

The fireflies glowed brightly, winking more than ever in the deepening night. His eyes, accustomed to the darkness, made out a mare stumbling along. On her back was something jagged. Was she like him?

He lifted his jar of fireflies onto a stump so that she might see it as a beacon. His voice was rich and warm when he spoke. "Are you lost?" He studied her. No she did not have a graveyard on her back, but shards of glass. She had a hat too, tilted on her head. Her mouth were full of big, possibly broken teeth.

She did not look as though she had come here intentionally, though she could have. Soquili got lost in the swamp all the time--some searching for something and others just ambling along. He wondered which she would be.

She bared her teeth at the sound of his voice. One thing she did not want was pity. It was tempting, so tempting, to rip his throat out just for having dared to imply that she needed aid.

Her stomach growled however, and that made her snarl for a whole other reason. She hadn't found a thing she could kill and eat in this blood cursèd swamp.

Whoever it was, maybe he knew what she could eat. Then she could teach him proper respect.

That decided, a snarl still on her face, she stalked wordlessly towards the voice.

Epitaph watched the mare pause. Her face was a sight to see, twisted and snarling. Was it at him or what? She advanced on him like a predator does a prey, but he didn't balk.

Sometimes others thought he was a swamp light or some being that was trying to lure others to their deaths. Perhaps that's what she thought he was. Or maybe she was that type?

He stayed there in the warm glow of the fireflies, watching her. She moved with an uneasy grace. He felt intrigued by her. "Do you need water?" He asked gently. "Or food? Have you need of anything?"

To ask help was not in her nature, even when she needed it and it was being freely offered. It was not in her nature to accept pity or charity. This would have to be done delicately, and delicate was not in her nature either.

She had to get help in such a way that he either did not want to give it, or in a way that established dominance. She would not be seen as a frail maiden unless it served her to be so. Even then, it was a role she loathed.

So she glared at him for a time, just glared, as she gathered her thoughts and figured out what to say.

Finally the words came, slow, measured, with a bite. "There are many ways to kill something for food, if you truly have some new way to show me, I'll allow it."

I'll allow it, words that put her in the position of power. She made it clear she knew well many ways to kill. It was the best she could think of, hungry and tired as she was.

Epitaph tilted his head at her when she spoke. She'd allow it? Interesting. But he still couldn't help but to smile warmly at her. "Well, I doubt I'm so well versed as you. If you're after meat, there's fish enough if you look in the right place. There's frogs if that's to your taste. They're better cooked though, or so I've heard. There's opposums in the trees. I could knock one down if that's what you wanted. It requires a little dexterity, and a pretty good toss to nail one. There's rats, but they're nasty bitey things. Really bitey."

He thought hard for a moment, watching the swamp lights play on the glass shards in her back. He wondered if they hurt? But she wouldn't tell him. He knew that much of her already. "So really, I guess it depends on your preference. What would you like to eat?" Then he bowed his head, and bent a knee briefly in a show of gallantry. "I'm Epitpah, at your service."

At her service? Well. She supposed she could get used to that, if she had to...

It had never dawned on her, really, to take a servant. This... could be amusing. She let herself issue a small snort that sounded to be somewhere between amusement and reluctant acceptance.

"Very well then, you may feel free to kill an opossum for me," she said, as though deigning to give him the honor. The reality was she had no clue what it was, but it sounded like it would be tastier than rat, and give her a chance to see what he could do.

One must know the skills and limits of one's vassal, after all.

Epitaph let out a little hum as he picked up his jar of fireflies. Quietly, he searched the trees for a possum. Little eyes glowed back at him in the dim moonligh. Shaking up the fireflies quite hard, he used the light to stun the creature. Possums were notorious for playing dead when spotted. It wasn't the first time he'd hunted one, though he'd never particularly ate one himself.

He batted the creature out of the tree and ended it quickly. Better to be quick and clean. He closed his eyes for a moment then took the creature over to the mare as a gift to lay at her feet.

"Do you eat it raw?" He tilted his head to look at her. "I can teach you how to hunt them if you like. They're...quite easy."

"I can see that," she drawled, having watched how easily he made the kill. Less style than she was used to trying for, and positively nothing impaled, but.. food was food. She could get used to this servant thing.

She bent her head, keeping an eye on him, even as she ate. She did not trust that he was not waiting for her distraction to kill her.

That did not mean that she would not use him, however. She allowed herself three mouthfuls, about half the beast, before she raised her head again to regard him.

"I might find it more amusing to leave the hunting to you. It was... a treat to watch," she said offering the faint praise like bait to see how he would react, to see how easily she could train him.

Epitaph watched her chow down on the possum. Apparently, she liked her meat fresh. He laughed at her compliment if you could call it that. He readjusted his jar of fireflies and dipped a hoof into the murky swamp water for a moment. "I have a sister, I know what flattery is. It comes right before being asked something with big eyes. Or being told to do something." He laughed again, stirring up the fireflies into a frenized glow.

"What are you expecting me to do? Kill all your food for you now?" He tilted his head to consider her. "So you're planning on sticking around or are you looking for something?"

"Who says I was not planning on leaving... knowing you'll follow like a well trained fly?" she asked. Flattery? Not really. She didn't like being compared to a sister, especially one he clearly was not serving at the moment.

No. He served her first and foremost, or not at all.

Epitaph's eyes danced with merriment. "Perhaps I would, perhaps I wouldn't." He didn't follow that up with a playful taunt about seeing if she was right. She didn't seem too playful for the most part.

"If you're so hungry, why don't you try to kill one now?" He nodded his head to an oppussum moving in the trees. "You did say it looked looked easy."

"I'm still eating this one, do feel free catch me another, though," she crooned, before taking a bite again of her meal. "It would be amusing to watch. Quite entertaining."
