Funa felt a profound sense of loss, though he had not in fact lost anything. He couldn't place the why or what for as he stared out at the ocean, only that he felt it keenly. It was as though he was adrift on a vast, fathomless ocean undertaking a voyage he didn't at all understand.
His dads had noticed his restlessnes, had advised him to find himself whatever that meant. It was all a part of growing up, they said. Yakinori had told him to go alone. It had been the first time, he'd gone far without him. But Yaki had told him he hated seeing him lost, he had understood it better than he had himself
The sand on his hoofs felt wonderful, the moon blazing bright over him. There was a whole world out there to see. How could he ever find himself or what he wanted in a world so big?

The smooth water felt amazing as it slid across her dark skin. So warm, yet not too much so that it was uncomfortable. In fact, it was a beautiful day above the water and below. Serene, silent, amazing. Ephyra had felt that this particular type of day was long overdue. Not that the other days were horrible you see. Far from it really. It was just that she had been having a particular nagging in the back of her mind that a warm, sunny day, with this just right amount of perfection was needed in her life. That said, there was also a small part of her that yearned, yearned greatly.
She had it all though, so she felt guilty. Her mother and father were loving, there for her in everything and anything that she needed or wanted, within reason of course. Her ten other siblings were just as perfect in her world as the rest. And yet, it just didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel perfect for her. And it wasn’t until she was by the shoreline, sunbathing against the rocks as waves crashed around and upon her, that she saw her first land soquili.
Ephyra was still a young filly at the time. Filled with a curiosity that could not be sated no matter what she did, or didn’t, do. And that particular day she saw a small family of land walkers coming to the shore line to play in the sea. It was so fascinating that Ephyra was entranced by their four legs. How did they walk without falling over? How did they curl around themselves at night to sleep without hurting themselves or others? And as she silently watched them, effectively hidden behind the rocks, that she wanted to join them. To join that family and have fun too.
She didn’t though. She was too nervous, and that nervousness didn’t change even at the years and her body grew into adulthood. However, that nervousness was matched with the yearning and curiosity about the world outside her watery home. She wanted to see the mountains and the rolling valleys the stories told about. She wanted to walk on land and feel the grass, that wasn’t seaweed by the way, under her hooves. Even though it was deemed impossible it didn’t stop her from wanting, from desiring more.
The idea of telling her family never crossed her mind. They wouldn’t understand. They were too nervous to come close to the shore anyway. Prayers that they wouldn’t find out that her days were spent quietly watching from her hiding place, watching the land walkers go to and from the shore. Having no idea that she was even there.
Today was no different. She had come to her little hidden alcove early in the morning, right after sunrise, before even the seagulls cackled their first laugh. Silently drifting above water, breathing in the salty air. A good day. A necessary day. One that would be just like all the others.

He had stayed there staring all night, the stars so close to the seas that he felt if he went swimming he could swim right into the heavens. But he hadn't, because what would that accomplish? It was a terrible thing to grow up and realize that perhaps jokes were not the be all and end all of life.
Because suddenly, it just wasn't enough.
His eyes caught the sight of something floating in the water. Brown with streaks of blue like lightning crackles. A mermaid. He had never seen one.
And suddenly, he found himself splashing in the water, desperate to meet a mermaid. Because, well he hadn't before. Wasn't that reason enough?
She'd probably hear him coming for a mile.
