IC

Amarone had just entered Oba when she started to hear gossip about another inventor in the town she was in. She couldn't help but notice that the words 'brilliant' and 'dangerous' and even 'insane' being tossed around in the same conversation, but maybe it was an overreaction?

Amarone needed a teacher, and this looked like a good place to find one.

But it seemed that all the gossip she had heard was scarily on mark. Not only was the man totally brilliant and way ahead of his times as an inventor, he was also creating machines with the intention of putting people into a crazed frenzy...

Quest Tasks
||. The quest should start with Amarone hearing of the inventor and the mostly negative rumors surrounding him.
||. She should seek him out, but once found, she will find he is working on a sound device, seeming to be more like a war machine.
||. This device has only been tested on animals so far, but it easily effects Janarim to the point of a crazed frenzy.
||. Thrilled that his device is working, he has decided to start his human testing.
||. Amarone has to decide whether or not it's worth using him as a teacher when what he's doing is so ethically uncalled for, but he's obviously brilliant.
||. Whether she decides to use him as a teacher or not, Amarone should decide whether she needs to take actions to stop his research.

[] Arrival and Rumors []

The journey had been long and difficult, but finally Amarone had arrived in the fabled lands of Oba. She was amazed at the difference in the temparature and landscape, often stopping to touch the sands or look at the new creatures. Because she traveled on the main road, she often paused to watch the merchants rush past, eyeing their carts and their wares before moving forward.

Just like Tale, Amarone was overwhelmed and excited to be in the new lands.

It took no time at all to walk through the entrance to the city of Kalv. Everything seemed to be bustling and overwhelmed as Obans and non-Obans alike peddled their goods in the make-shift markets. The merchants moved swiftly, turning over what they had before rushing out again. Amarone stood to the side and watched it all with wide-eyes, before she starred up at the living quarters that seemed to fill the skies. There was so much potential, so much opportunity to do good and help people, and she had no idea where to start.

Moving into the crowd, she figured the best place to go would be the heart of the market. There, she heard screaming of people trying to catch other's attention, selling goods from Zena to Matori. It wasn't long until she attempted to help others, with mixed results. If she saw something break, she would rush to fix it, or offer her skills. Most Obans would scoff at her, whereas others seemed glad to have some help with their products and carts.

After a long day, Amarone fell back with a huff against a wall, brushing her sweat-soaked brow and going back to her people watching. It wasn't long until she began to hear some rumors between two merchants packing up for the day.

"...Tytus has been making a lot of ruckus lately. I tell you, it is a pain to live next door to someone always fiddling around and creating things."

Amarone perked at the words, interested to hear of the potential of another tinkerer just like herself.

"I hear he is working on a machine to help the King" The second merchant replied as he packed away his goods, "Somethin' that no one has seen before...and one that will make Oba proud."

The first merchant scoffed, shaking his head, "Trust me, anything that crazy old man makes is nothin' to be proud of."

She had often heard the same rumors and whispering, the fact that people didn't understand her mind and saw it as crazy or foolish. Amarone sat a little longer, listening to the two men go on about his contribution and how it most likely wouldn't be anything big. In fact, the neighbor seemed agitated and determined to dissuade his friend that Tytus was nothing but a kook and pock on the great land of Oba.

But she knew, deep down, that she had to find this man. If he was an inventor, she knew she could do some good and get something in return. And, if he was trying to make a great contribution to his nation, she had a feeling they would resonate together on a deeper level. She wanted to help as many people as possible, and this man seemed to be keen to do the same.

Determined now, she realized the men were done packing and heading home. With a sharp focus, Amarone began to follow the first man home, tracking his steps as he led her toward the inventor.

She never saw the looks directed at her, or the looks directed at Tytus' home.

[] First Meeting, First Impressions []

Amarone decided to return to the studio the next day, figuring it would be better to reach out to him at that time and that it would give her more time to see what he was working on. As she approached the studio in the morning, Tulara by her side and carrying her pack, she felt the excitement of the day flowing through her body. So many thoughts raced through her head while she walked up to the door, and she all but wiggled when she finally raised her hand to knock.

The noises within the studio came to a sudden stop, and she took a step back as the door swung open to reveal and older Oban, his skin dark and his eyes darting around before landing on her. Amarone swung her weight back and forth on her toes as she grinned at the man, anticipation building.

"Hello! My name is Amarone, and I heard from the locals that you were an inventor well know in the area. I know this is sudden and a bit out of the norm, but I was wondering if I could talk and see what you are working on...you see, I also want to invent things to help change the world, and maybe we can talk about where you came from and how you got to be so well known!"

When she finished, she found herself panting but grinning still, and watching as Tytus examined her with a small frown and narrowed eyes. She pulled her hands together as if praying for him to answer her. With another long silence, the man suddenly broke out into a grin, and Amarone let out the breath she had been holding.

"Yes, my girl, it is always nice to see a fellow intellectual in a land full of brawn!"

She nodded quickly as he stepped aside and held out an arm, rushing inside while he closed the door behind her. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the studio, she couldn't help but let out a gasp at everything around her. The walls, the tables, even the floors were covered with tools and half-finished inventions. Turning to the man, he gave her a nod before she rushed to the nearest spot to study what he was working on.

"Is this a new type of stirrup?" She wondered, her fingers brushing across the leather and the buckles before she turned to look over her shoulder at the man.

Having walked closer, he sent her another toothy smile and nodded, and she turned to move on to the next item. It wasn't clear how long she jumped from one item to the next, but Tytus was dutiful and helpful as he followed along and explained the intentions in short, clipped sentences.

Everything she saw improved her opinion of the man, everything had potential for a greater good. She smiled and discussed her feelings on what he could use the things for, and he seemed keen to agree and support her ideas and suggestions for improvements. It was only when they finished circling the room that she turned away from the goods and looked at the Oban once more.

"You seem to really enjoy what you are seeing here...Amarone was it?" He finally asked, that same smirking smile crossing his lips.

"Oh, yes! This really is exactly what I dream to be one day. Having my own place, inventing for the good of the world, it all is so...helpful!"

"Helpful...hmm..." He responded slowly, looking her up and down once again, "You would be the helpful type, wouldn't you?"

She paused a moment, her brows narrowing at his question, "Well, yes. That is what I want to do, to better the world..."

Amarone was about to question him further, before he spoke up again, "Well, you are in luck. I actually am working on a very important project for Oba, and my apprentice seems to have left to the palace. It has put me in such a bind."

Her breath caught as she waited, wondering if what she was hearing was true. When he left the air silent, she stepped closer and looked him in his eyes, "Are you...are you offering for me to be your assistant?" The thought was exciting, and when he nodded she let out a bit of a squeal, spinning around in excitement.

"Of course, oh yes I will! Tytus I will do everything I can to help you bring good to this world...I guess I should call you master now. I hope you don't mind I have all my stuff, and I am ready right now to help you ou-"

"Yes, yes. Go grab your stuff, and I can show you the project."

As Amarone spun around and left the room, she missed Tytus' smile drop, his eyes narrowed once more and full of irritation. It was only there a moment, before a smile returned, closed and tight as he moved to help her bring her things inside.

[] War Machine []

It took no time at all for Amarone to bring her stuff in and get Tulara settled in the back pens. She wasn't too surprised at the amount of Janarim in the back, seeing as she was in Oba. She took a long moment to ensure that the Scorra was safe and content before heading back inside to meet with Tytus.

"Good..." he greeted her, shifting around and fixing some things in the room, "I take it you are all settled in...because I want to show you the device you will be helping me complete."

He was brisk and to the point, but Amarone saw none of that as he was willing to jump right into testing and production. She moved closer with wide eyes, smiling brightly and looking at the machine that he was huddled over. It appeared like a music player, although it was more rounded with the sound device. The disk that it had was bumpy and jagged, and clearly not meant for beauty. No matter, as Amarone knew the prototypes of many projects were more focused on performance and not on appearance.

"What does it do? It looks like a music player, but how does it change and help the people around us?"

Her curiosity seemed to amuse the man, as he shifted and lifted up the box and began to carry it back outside from where she came from. Once again thinking nothing of it, Amarone scurried after him, watching as he placed the device on a podium between all of the cages housing the Janarim, and her Scorra.

Looking at the creatures, Amarone couldn't help but notice that the Janarim seemed to cower, falling back and hissing as if they feared the man. Glancing back, she watched as Tytus unpacked the machine, before cranking it around in a slow circle. The Janarim began to make more noise, hissing at the sound of the crank before Tytus turned back.

"You may want to put these on..." He said with a charming smile, handing Amarone a pair of covers for her ears. Nodding slowly, she grabbed the item and put them on, glancing back at the animals who seemed tense. As soon as she glanced back to the inventor, he flipped a switch and the area was filled with noise that she couldn't make out.

But that didn't matter, because the howls, the growls, and the screaming of the animals immediately caught her attention. Amarone could only watch in horror as the Janarim began to thrust themselves against their cages, scraping and thumping on the material with foam coming from their mouths. Each creature seemed to be in a one-minded rage, their goal to get out and tear at whatever was in front of him.

In her horror, Amarone stepped back, as if that would save her if the creatures escaped. Her heart thrummed in her ears, her lip was raw from where she bit in to hold back her gasp. Her eyes scanned each creature for a long moment, until she finally landed on Tulara, and tears swelled to her eyes. Her faithful Scorra, a friend and ally, was slamming around trying to escape just the same as the others.

She could hear the screams, and all at once she wanted to shout for Tytus to make it all stop.

It seemed as if the minutes went on for hours before the music died down, and the animals all collapsed in heaps at their cage doors. Swallowing back bile, she turned to stare at Tytus as he took off his ear protection, waiting patiently until she did the same.

It seemed as if he ignored the look of horror she knew was on her face, as well as the fact she seemed as if she were about to faint.

When she couldn't bring herself to speak, he was quite content to speak instead.

"As you can see, this invention throws everyone into a frenzy. Anyone who hears the noise without protection will fall into a blind rage, unable to focus on anything but attacking whatever is around them. Allies, Friends, it does not matter. This weapon will help make a great many changes, will help the Oban Army take down the foes before them...without lifting a single finger."

His dark smirk finally came upon his face, and he watched her once more with keen eyes as she shook from head to toe.

"All that is left, my sweet little assistant, is for me to test this device on Earthlings. It is clearly ready, and now that I have my own little assistant, I am ready for the testing."

She huffed a bit, shaking her head more as she tried to catch her breath and her words, refusing to connect the dots until he finally said it.

"A great inventor always needs to test the inventions themselves, to know the true efficiency and power. If you want to be a great inventor, little girl, you will need to go through testing just as any other. You will need to make sure everything is working to a T, that is the way of an inventor. If you want to be a master, you need to do this task."

She stepped back again, mouth dry as he seemed to look down and mock her, and finally, she found her voice.

"...no...I...NO! I won't do it!"

[] Decisions []

As the man placed his ear protection to the side, he seemed to sneer at the girl's response.

"Of course, a nasty little Windling like you wouldn't know the thing about the greater good, would she? You all are pathetic nomads with no focus, no drive, and no spine. You dare come here and act as if you are better than me? I am a genius, and this device will bring forth a greater good in this world."

Swallowing, Amarone shook her head again, "I never said that, I just refuse to do something so damaging. What good is there in a world full of fear and destruction?"

"The Obans will rule this world anyway they can, and I am simply allowing them to do so without fighting and losing blood." He roared to her, stepping closer, "Mothers, Sisters, Fathers and Brothers will all be safe with this item. That is the good I've created!"

Amarone saw chaos in his eyes, and anger in his heart, and she knew she had to try something to help him see. She looked around, before remembering all of what she saw inside.

"There is so much good if you look past war. That stirrup you invented will help so many people travel quicker, deliver goods and bring in income. And that armor I saw will help keep people safe, and protect them. You can do so much good, if you look past the evil of this world! You must know this, you must see this!"

He began to laugh, and her trembling grew at the sound.

"Your doe-eyed looks and dreams make me sick. That is not the world, little girl, that is not how this works. Only the greatest will survive, be it in battle or in wit."

He turned back to his invention for a long moment.

"I refuse to believe that. I refuse to help you spread chaos..." She said bravely after a long moment, glaring at him when he looked back towards her with a mocking laugh, "I'm sorry, but I can't do this."

He continued to watch her in silence as she stomped over to let Tulara out, cooing softly to the Scorra as it wobbled and leaned against the wall in exhaustion. She refused to stay another moment while Tytus was there, and worked hard to ignore the slimy feelings that his eyes seemed to give her as he watched. The man was blind to the good he could give, to the positives of his inventions, and there was no use for her to further waste her breath.

In fact, she was beginning to feel as if she were in danger.

With one last glare, she moved to grab her stuff inside and leave, ignoring his mocking laughter as she went.

"Farewell weak little wanderer. Feel free to warn your friends of the power that the Oban army will soon have. Nothing will save them once I'm done with my testing..."

[] Determination []

Rubbing her arms to ward off the chill, Amarone left the house at a slow pace. Her mind and her body felt numb from what she had seen, and she still couldn't believe that someone would invent such an object. The concept was so foreign to her, the ideas of the world being so corrupt astounding. With the mindset of always wanting to do good, she just couldn't believe that someone would want to be so evil.

It was clear she would be on her own for now, left to invent little things and help those who she could without a teacher to guide her. As she glanced at Tulara, Amarone felt determination in her decision - there was no reason why she would ever put up with the man and his inventions. He was pure evil, and there was no good from what he was doing. Blinded by his drive, he would only bring pain, suffering, and hatred.

Finally settling down when she felt she was far enough away, Amarone leaned her head back against the brick of the building behind her. She would need to leave the city, find something else to discover, and put this behind her. But could she even do that? Would it be that easy to forget the potential that mad man had to change the world for the worse?

Looking down at her hands, she realized she had been gripping something tightly. It was the ear protection that he had provided to her, and she never set it down. Letting her palm relax, she eyed the device with interest, feeling a spark in her mind at the potential.

"I...I can't just sit back...not when I have the chance to do something to change the world..."

She knew her words wouldn't accomplish anything, no one would believe her when she expressed what she saw. Yet, if she had proof, or reason, maybe the great leaders of the world would heed her warning.

All she needed to do was give them the tools to protect themselves. All she needed to do was get there and help spark a change. All she needed to do was figure out what power she held in her hand, and how she could make more.

She would make more devices, and she would travel to where the Oban enemies were. Matori was often spoken in vain, and would be her first place to go. Then she would go west to where the trees were and find the places where the Obans failed with their invasion. She would provide many copies of the prototype for the leaders and the tribes, and she would do all she could to express the danger that lurked in the dark mine of Tytus.

She would make it her goal to do this one thing, and to help change the world.

As long as Amarone had the ability to invent, she would make it her goal to protect others and help them live a better life.

With that thought in mind, she turned a smile to her Scorra.

"No better time than today to get started, eh Tulara?"

Happiness bloomed in her heart as she found her newest aspiration, and with her head held high, she began the next step of her journey to help better the world.
