There was once a girl who was sick; so sick that anyone she touched fell ill and died. Because of this reason, there were people who hunted her, wanting to contain her, and study her, seeing what makes it possible for her to do these things. One day, she accidentally bumps into this boy who works at a local coffee shop. She freaks out, thinking he's going to die.

He doesn't.

She'd lingered for days, waiting to see if he was going to eventually die from her touching him, but he stays alive. Now, not only is she being hunted to be contained, but he becomes hunted to be studied as to why he's immune.

and they have to escape.

"Sick."

It was quite a windy day, Alexander observed as he opened the door to his apartment in the heart of New York City. The door swung black, banging against the wall with a loud thud. He winced as he pulled it closed, noticing it left quite the dent in the plaster of the wall. Alex made a mental note to put a piece of paper over it later so his landlord wouldn't b***h.

It was almost 6:30 in the morning on a cool Tuesday morning as Alex climbed down the stairs of his apartment complex. He used the flashlight on his phone to guide him down the stairs as the sun barely peeked over the horizon. A few people snuggled underneath layers of clothing walked down the streets, arm crossed and heads tucked into their scarves. Alex was dressed in his work uniform, which was a white short sleeve button up shirt with some black pants. He was cold, but the coffee shop he worked at was warm with scents of freshly brewed coffee. The tiny shop opened at 7:15, while Alex usually got there about twenty minutes early to set the heater on high.

The sky was a dark purple with hints of pink as the sun woke up slowly, along with the rest of New York. Alex didn't mind getting up early. He wasn't one to make a big deal out of it. He figured to get up quickly instead of dragging his drowsiness out. He didn't like the feel of grogginess, so he quickly put a coffee pot on the burner, letting the water boil as he took a five minute shower. He then would shake coffee powder into the water, adding a little cream and tons of sugar. Alex took his coffee very sweet, the taste of sugar lingering on his lips for most of the day. He didn't like bitter coffee. It was gross and he didn't know how people enjoyed something so flavorless.

At the coffee shop, Alex's friends would stare at him as he dumped 4 or 5 sugar cubes in his personalized coffee mug. He just grinned, stirring the sweet rock around in his mug, taking a huge swig shortly after. Most of the items on the menu were sort of bitter, so whenever Alex whipped up a latte for himself, he dumped piles of sugar into it. The coffee shop often ran out of sugar, and Alex claimed to not know why when they asked.

Alex continued on down the sidewalk, unlocking his phone as the sound of feet pattering against the concrete surrounded him. He had a text from his mom telling him to have a good day. He moved out from his parent's house when he heard of an apartment opening in downtown New York. Yeah, it was expensive as hell, but it was nicely decorated and located conveniently for Alex. It was small but it had everything he needed, which wasn't much. Alex's mom seemed to always worry when he did something she didn't agree with, which bothered him, but he always brushed it off.

Looking up from his phone, he continued on down the sidewalk, following the lazy venture of the growing crowd around him.

                                                          Ancytier

One step, two step, one step, two step.

Virginia thought to herself as she walked down the sidewalk of New York City. Her eyes were drowsy and her walk was no better. Her dark brown hair was pulled up into a high messy ponytail, she wore a light blue fleece sweatshirt with dark jeans and black boots that went halfway up her shin. She'd stayed up the entire night, just walking. She never stayed in one place long enough to see if people were calling her crazy or weird for walking around so much. This girl was always on the move, afraid that if she'd stayed in one place, she'd get caught.

Ah yes, caught. Virginia Chesterfield was being hunted. Though, the public people weren't aware she was being hunted. A small, scientific organization was tracking her, trying to contain her so she could be studied. The girl was wanted for the bizarre "power" she had. This "power" could have been classified as a biological weapon, of some sort. Anyone who she touched with her bare skin would die only a few days later. One to five days, tops.

It all started around the time when she was six years old, and the first person to fall victim to this was her younger brother, Dylan. It was truly a devastating time in her household, as Dylan was just a newborn. The doctors and nurses at the hospital believed it to just be that Dylan hadn't taken to the birthing correctly, though they never found the root source as to how he did pass. Because of her brother dying, Virginia's mother couldn't take the pain of having lost a child and took her own life, leaving Virginia to her father, who, was never really around for him to die by the time Virginia discovered it was her fault people around her were dying, and she began to wear gloves all the time. All that took was one game of tag between her and ten other students.

New York City was probably not the best place for a girl like Virginia, seeing as she was only just putting everyone else's life at risk. Though, she frequently hid in cities, as it allowed her to be masked behind thousands of other faces, making it more difficult for her to be hunted.

Virginia walked down the street, keeping her eyes down, as if that were to be any help of keeping herself hidden. All it would take would be one touch of someone, and she'd be found. She glanced down at her hands, sighing. Out in Jersey, someone had taken her gloves from the rest room. It seemed idiotic that someone would have done that. Virginia had checked the lost and found a bunch of times, though nothing ever showed up before she had to move onto a new city.

"Shoot," Virginia gasped as she stumbled forward, having not paid attention as she was walking. She'd stepped wrong on a slab of concrete. As a reflex, her hands went out in front of her and she grabbed onto the nearest thing, which so happened to be the arm of a white haired boy. It took her a moment, but she stood up and looked up to thank him, when her heart sank, realizing. Oh no. She thought, quickly letting go and taking her hands back to her sides. "I'm really sorry about that, I guess I just wasn't paying attention." Virginia laughed, nervously.

                                                                  belle coquette

Alex strolled down the sidewalk, checking his watch. It was about to be 6:45. He usually walked lazily the first few minutes of his walk, gazing into early opened shops, reading signs on their glass windows. It was a random habit he developed when he moved to New York. Every sign he saw, or every interesting shop he passed by, he took a moment to peer into it. That was another reason why he woke up an hour and a half early for work.

Earbuds in his ears, Alex ambled along the beat of Lane Boy by Twenty One Pilots, his arms crossed across his chest. The wind had slowed down considerably, but the air surrounding him was still pretty nippy. It was always pretty cold in New York, as everyone knew. The streets were busy and the air filled with exhaust fumes. Alex had a truck that he barely even used anymore, simply because gas was expensive and traffic was terrible.

He used to live in a small, lonely city in the heart of Ohio. He shared it with his younger brother, mom and dad and a few other hundred people. He jumped at the opportunity to live in New York, because living by nothing but corn fields all his life really sickened him. The roads were dirt and it was about an hour and a half drive to the nearest gas station. The scenery around their house was rows upon rows of corn from the farmers next door who sat on their porches, holding shotguns and scanning the area. Alex was definitely guilty of stealing a few and putting them under boiling water when his mom forgot to go to the grocery store.

It was about a 10 minute walk from where Alex was standing currently. He always noticed a small bakery that opened at 5, serving huge chocolate cupcakes and muffins. They were pretty expensive, so Alex didn't usually find himself ordering many desserts from this place.

The boy yawned slightly, rubbing his face with one hand. He was about to pull out his phone to change the song until her felt a pair of hands grip his arm and bring him down. He reacted quickly, yelping slightly as he stumbled forward, almost falling but quickly saving himself. He whipped around, ready to bring hell on some person at 6:50 in the goddamn morning until he noticed it was a girl who looked like she was about to pass out.

Alex stepped forward to help her, stretching out his hand but she was already getting up. He awkwardly put his arms back at his side, giving the girl an awkward smile.

"It's no problem I live here, heh. It happens literally 5 times on my way back home from work every day, don't sweat it." Alex chuckled, his arms wrapped tightly against his chest. God he was cold. How he so desperately wanted to be in the warm air of the tiny coffee shop on the corner of the sidewalk. He scanned the girl up and down, realizing the dark bags underneath her eyes and slanted posture. She didn't look good, to say the lest. Alex rubbed the nape of his neck, thinking.

"You look like you've had a rough night. Maybe you wanna stop by for a drink? I work at a coffee shop down on the end of this sidewalk, if you wanna check it out. We got a lot of good coffee, you could use some..." Alex enlightened, checking his phone. 7:00. s**t.

"Listen, I gotta run, but you should definitely swing by whenever you have the time. And watch where you're going next time!" Alex scolded playfully before turning to walk briskly towards his job.

His lips were moving, and she knew he was saying something to her. It didn't seem like he was yelling at her, like an average New Yorker would, he appeared to be friendly. Virginia just couldn't keep her ears open, as her heart was racing at the thought this boy was going to die soon, all because of her. She looked down at her hands and shoved them into her jacket pockets. Only then did she pay attention to what he was saying.

He was talking about her getting coffee, as she must have appeared physically drained from walking all night long. A small smile crawled across her lips and she shook her head slightly. "I'd love to stop in and get a cup of coffee," she started, then noticed he was walking towards where he worked. She then turned to walk with him. "But I don't have enough money. You see, I walk a lot. I'm kind of a traveler. Don't have a job." Virginia fumbled around in her pocket, feeling the crisp five dollar bill she'd been lucky enough to find just sitting down on the road near a bus stop. "All I need is a place to wash up and sleep."

She didn't want to come straight forward and ask if there was a way she could rest up in the coffee shop. In the back of her mind, the worry that the group would find her lingered on. At this point, she still didn't want to get caught. Enough horror movies had been watched by her to know exactly what happens to people that are biologically different, or more advanced, than others. Blood would be lost, the walls would illuminate a bright white, and the silence tainted with mechanical beeping would drive her insane. Resting was not something she could risk.

Virginia walked with the boy until they reached the coffee shop. Her mouth created a faint flavor of coffee on her tongue, and her mouth cried for a drink, along with her stomach begging for food, as she noticed a few breakfast cakes on the counter. She glanced up at the boy, watching as he moved to walk into the shop. "Yeah, maybe I'll stop in one day. Oh," She extended her hand, but quickly retracted it, remembering she couldn't shake hands with him. "I'm Virginia."

                                                                  belle coquette

Alex peered inside the shop, noticing the lights already turned on. He took the liberty to flip the sign from 'CLOSED' to 'OPEN' as he opened the door, letting the warm air envelop him whole. He shivered slightly, holding the door open with his foot. He was disappointed to hear that she was a traveler. Alex had so many friends that lost their place, resorting to walking the streets in hope of a revelation. Of course, he lost contact with them, their names eventually escaping his memory. He knew it was tough, and seeing this girl and hearing her explain herself was kind of depressing.

Alex turned to her, rubbing his arms with the palms of his hands. He sighed softly, looking her over. She was cute. When she reached her hand out, he did the same. He didn't notice she had drawn her hand in until he looked down. He chuckled slightly, rubbing the nape of his neck nervously. Wow he probably looked like a complete idiot in front of this girl right now. He felt his face getting hot as he looked at nothing in particular.

He was kind of disappointed to hear that she couldn't stop in to have a drink. If she needed, he would definitely hook her up. He always had a few dollars to spare, so why not spend them on a cute, tired looking girl? He wasn't going to force her of course. She had probably seen her fair share of creeps, and he didn't want to be one.

"Virginia? That's a pretty name. I'm Alex. I hope this doesn't... sound creepy or anything, I know I don't even know you, but if you do end up here again, maybe we can talk over some coffee or something? It's up to you, heh..." Alex smiled, turning to hear the sound of a blender whirring inside.

"I gotta go. I'll see you around..." Alex waved slightly, before moving into the heated shop. He hoped he made a good first impression. He was a ditz when it came to girls. He didn't really go to clubs or had an impressive social life.

Putting on an apron, Alex yawned slightly as he stood behind the cash register.

"Lovely lady. That your girlfriend?" Alex's boss, Josh asked above the violent whir of the blender he was using. Alex chuckled softly, shaking his head. Every girl that stopped to chat with Alex, Josh instantly assumed they were his girlfriend. He didn't mind, it was sort of endearing.

"Nah, I just met her walking here. She's... homeless, for the lack of better word." Alex admitted, grabbing his mug from under the front counter.

"That's too bad. You're not that unappealing to the eye. Sure you don't have a girl?" Josh laughed, pouring the contents of the blender in his own mug. He opened the cash register to dump a five dollar bill in, before shutting it.

"Uh thanks? The last time I checked I was still single, though..." Alex mumbled, putting a coffee pot filled with water on the burner. Josh laughed into his mug, tipping it back before wiping his mouth with his jacket sleeve.

"Hah, that's unfortunate. Maybe one day your girl will walk in here. You'll know. I'll be in my office." Josh winked before slipping into the back of the shop where his office was located. Alex shook his head, pouring coffee into his mug before adding the essentials. A small ding echoed, signaling the shops first early customers.

                                                          Ancytier
