Swish. Swish. The beat of his own wings thrummed in his ears, the stiff breeze pushing him about his he attemped to hover on the spot, muscles straining along back and withers. He was attempting quite a difficult feat, below him was a large sunflower moving back and forth in the wind, and he planned on diving from his current height, shrinking into his small form and landing on all four hooves in the middle of the flower.
It would all take timing and mental discipline as it took concentration to shift from one size to the other and he was trying to do it whilst during a controlled dive. This wasn't first attempt, far from it, broken stalks and scattered petals on the ground around the target flower attested to the failed attempts, and pollen and petals both were streaked on hide and through hair.
Here went nothing...he twisted in the air, pointing groundwards, wings folded and angled back, and legs tucked in tight. Closer. Closer. Snap! His wings sprang open again as wide as he could make them and at the same time he managed to shrink, just doing so as his legs extended and his hooves hit the middle of the sunflower in a not too gentle manner. The flower whipped around alarmingly, and he had to flap his wings until the movement slowed, but he had done it!
With mane and tail in a tangle of knots and petals he rose slowly on slightly giddy wings and did a happy little loop above the sunflower. He wasn't one to see gratification, but he did think it would have been nice if someone had seen that. Oh well..

She had been moving along what was really no more than the suggestion of a path, an area just slightly worn down by the frequent use of game animals on their way to the river. Her thoughts were far away, lost on the wind that was whipping her colorful hair about her face and rump. She seemed not to notice the distraction, or perhaps she had given up trying to keep her mane from flying into her eyes. In any case, she moved along slowly, almost mechanically as she allowed herself to contemplate her place in the world and where she might go next. Despite her distraction her feet were faithful in their placement on the ground, meeting with no resistance despite many rocks and broken branches and thick grass and bushes along the rough trail that could potentially trip her up. She was very sure on her feet, something she perhaps inherited from her mother - a mare that loved to run and had practiced this until she had perfect control over her movements. She smiled thinking of her beloved mother, a pang of loneliness stabbing her heart. It had been too long since she'd seen her parents.
Perhaps it was the shifting of her hair in her eyes, but she suddenly thought she saw something curious and moved closer to investigate. She couldn't be sure exactly what it was, only that there was quite a bit of movement and color. She managed to shake her hair out of her face in time to catch the flutter's dive into the flower. She was impressed and amused at once, and though he was quite small and still some distance away, she imagined he was looking smug and pleased with himself for the successful landing. She noted all of the broken flowers strewn about and shook her head, smiling. Of course he would be pleased after all of that unsuccessful practice. She wondered exactly what he was trying to accomplish with perfecting that maneuver. Was it simple amusement or something more?
"That was impressive," she called out to him, taking a few steps closer. "I don't think I could manage such a feat in this wind." Without wings she couldn't manage anything of the sort, but that seemed irrelevant. She stopped short of the flower, peering down at him and feeling absurdly giant in comparison. It occurred to her she had never actually met a flutter. There were a few somewhere down the family line - at least she thought there were. She had only a vague recollection of that information being passed to her. "I hope you don't mind me watching," she added, hoping the stallion wasn't offended she'd burst in on his private training. "I had only just happened by and caught site of this display of talent." She hoped a little flattery would help ease his irritation, if he ended up annoyed at her intrusion.

"I.." he started saying and the pollen that had been slowly working on his nose whilst he had been celebrating his personal victory finally caught and he sneezed, his mane tangling yet more as he did so. He wiggled his nose, and squinted down his muzzle and then laughed.
"As I was saying, don't mind at all. That you saw me being successful." he added as he looked upwards at the mare. There was a simplicity in her looks, but that didn't mean he thought her plain, far from it. Her small horn was very delicate looking, and the braids in her mane framed her pretty face. Her pelt colouring reminded him of clouds drifting across open skies, and his male pride was very glad that she had seen that attempt as it made for a good first impression. Well, until he had sneezed that is.
"It's tricky." he admitted, taking to the wing again and hovering above the now solitary sunflower so that he was more her height. "Flutter wings don't have the same range of mobility as feathered, so I can be less accurate. They damage easier as well."
In his travels and training he'd managed to get away with only a slight raggedness to the very ends of the butterfly shaped wings, he knew that without them he lost an advantage over land based predators and so they were to be kept in condition. He grinned suddenly and then made a little swooping bow in the end.
"Forgive my manners lady, I have not introduced myself. I am Fragment. May I have the honour of knowing your name?"
