Datsi chewed his lip a bit nervously as he waited to launch the starting attack. His mother was the current Champion of the Sky Festival and he felt like he had a lot to live up to because of that. It was a bit silly to think of Haini as a seasoned fighter since she was so sweet and just a bit ditzy, but she had the trophy and wore it with pride since he had been born. Hopefully he'd live up to her legacy a bit. He turned to face his opponent and nodded in greeting before letting out a slow breath. All right...time to go to work. He moved forward to make the first move, hoping he'd start off on the right paw. Roll 1: Full

Helaku was an easy-going lion that few would think of as a warrior of any stripe, but he had been born a rogue, lived half his life as one. He'd protected his mother until they'd parted that he might join the Ela, and he took the safety of his beloved mate just as seriously. He might not live and breathe battle, but he hoped to make a good showing and show his respect for clan and pride. He recognized the younger lion before him as a fellow member of Earth clan, but knew little of him beyond that. He landed a solid blow on Helaku, and his own retaliatory strike was...not quite so strong.

Datsi also recognized the lion, but he had never spoken to him before. Maybe today would change that. He kept to himself like the rest of his family tended to do, not because he was snobby or thought he was better than other lions, but simply because he was too shy to strike up conversation. He also knew the other lion was older than even his father and mother, so the surprisingly weak hit threw him off guard. Should he take it easier on him? Was this going to be a sure victory? He didn't want to make the other male look badly or injure him too hard, so after he took the light hit he returned one of his own, not sure if this was the best idea. It certainly left him open for a surprise attack. Roll 2: Half

Helaku found himself bemused by the flicker of doubt he saw in his younger opponent's eyes, and the more tentative strike he received--it still knocked a little air out of his lungs with a huff, but surely his sparring partner could do better than that. Grandcubs or no, he was still far from a creaky elder! Abruptly charging forward, he reared up onto his hind legs to swing heavy paws at Datsi. If he could connect, maybe he could daze the other male enough to put him on the defensive and keep him there.

The sudden change in Helaku's attack made Datsi freeze in place. The majority of the pride were classified as hunters, but Datsi really wasn't that great at his job. He was easily startled as was the case now. Thankfully instinct kicked in and, as the older lion swatted him around the ears, he lifted his own paws to return the attack. They both landed solid hits and Datsi backed off after he made contact, his vision blurry and his head aching. "Oh..." That had been a good hit. Great...now he was really rattled. He shook his head to clear his vision, hoping that wouldn't affect him too poorly as the spar went on. If it did he might have to forfeit. Roll 3: Full
